north wildwood with the mobile weather lab and all important holiday weekend forecast, kathy, it looks gorgeous down the shore. >> reporter: chris, it is electric. i left my house at 1:00 this afternoon, you saw the pictures from chopper three. it took me a half an hour longer to get here then it usually does. the it has been a long, cold winter and the excitement is just amazing here. didn't feel like summer until i got down the shore. you can see i brought the live mobil weather lab. crowd are building. are you guys ready forummer. >> yes. >> some brave souls already stepped in the ocean. little too cold for me. mobile weather will happen says temperature is 77.4 on the board it is breezy but i'll tell you warm enough that we do need the win. lets look at temperatures around the delaware valley because they vary depending on where you are. we have a weak front that is moving through and that is why it is cooler to the north and west. you can see in philadelphia, it is 75. allentown 63. in millville 74. down the shore ocean city 67,

>> reporter: chris, and natasha, we are off to a great start this summer. there are still people on the beach right now enjoying the sunshine, it is breezy but there is plenty of fun. looking further are down boardwalk people are walking down with drinks, pizza in hand. people are eating their way down the boardwalk. there are many traditions and event in ocean city and we witnessed several of them to day. unlocking the ocean is a a tradition in many jersey shore towns, but what follows in ocean city is definitely you sneak. thinks the 12th annual business person's plunge, where local merchants dress up in funny costumes and business a tire for a brisk dip in the atlantic ocean. >> you know, this is first time i have gone in the ocean and it was fun awesome. ocean city is opened and ready for summer. >> reporter: plunge organizers say this is the biggest turnout ever. >> it is comradery fun easy,

simple and we want to make our visitors and residents and all of the businesses, opened for the the business. >> reporter: economist say this should be a banner year for shore towns with relatively low gas prices and stable economy they forecast a four or 5 percent increase in business. as long as there is sunshine there will be plenty to do. >> i will go to the beach and get ice cream. >> i am going to play. >> reporter: what are you going to play. >> sand castle. >> reporter: levy family from hainesport says nothing start off summer better then a trip to the boardwalk. >> take a day walk around, go back later hang out back and drink a few adult beverages. >> reporter: nice size crowd and you can see we have parents with their brigade of pushing the strollers lots have of families out here and again, we are just getting started. expect to see lots of people in ocean city and throughout the shore this weekend.

reporting live, cleve bryan cbs-3 "eyewitness news" good thanks very much, cleve. not everyone head down the shore for holiday weekend "eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers is live at spruce street harbor park in penns landing just one of the many happening spots here in the city this weekend matt. >> reporter: going down the shore certainly one option but if you are not that adventurous or just not that big of the fan of traffic there are certainly plenty of things to do around philadelphia. for starters, we have video to show you here, we check out some of the practices being held the ncaa division one lacrosse champion ship being held at lincoln financial feel. we are looking at the scene from johns-hopkins university, just one of the finalist that fight it out for national championship this weekend on the field the eagles home. tickets are still available. we are back here live, sports is not the only thing to do this weekend. for example i'm down at the

rail root between the the city and thorndale all travel on this busy stretch of main line track, owned and maintained by am track. but for more than five hours through the morning rush hour there were repair crews instead of trains, on the westbound track. after amtrak says a broken rail forced it to cancel septa a services, and for amtrak trains on to a single track. the the rail problem on this busy stretch of the amtrak main line, comes just ten days after a deadly derailment ignited a national controversy, over infrastructure abe providing funds to keep amtrak safe. >> i don't think that a lot of people in congress take our rail system seriously because they keep trying to cut funds. >> the pieces of concrete are falling off track is breaking, it is time to start rebuilding, renewing what we have, before something really bad happens.

>> reporter: in a statement e mailed to cbs-3 amtrak stated in part, an investigation to determine why the rail broke is underway, but this episode demonstrates the impact, that aging infrastructure can have on services reliability. as trains, once again began rolling over the spot where the the rail defect was detected, track officials pointed out that the problem was uncovered by their personnel, and action a taken immediately to protect passengers, by stopping trains, and making repairs. in chester county, walt hunter for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". well elsewhere a two alarm fire ripped through a camden home this morning. chopper three was over that scene at kaign avenue and rose street. the fire fighter had to go to the hospital after sustaining a minor leg injury but no one else was hurt there was damage done to the home, the cause of the fire is under investigation. a $2,500 reward is now being offered in connection

with the robbery of that gun shop in delaware county. it happened around 4:00 o'clock yesterday morning at the suburban armory, on macdade boulevard in collindale. police tell "eyewitness news" that the suspect smashed glass cases, and made off with 19 guns including some semiautomatics. they are looking for a white oldsmobile cutlass and dark colored pontiac montana minivan. a temple university physics professor is arrested for allegedly trading u. secrets with china 47 year-old xi stayed in this university video and charged were four counts of wire fraud. only cbs-3 was there as federal investigators searched xi's home in penn valley. he have is an expert in the field of super conductivity accused of trying to obtain a ground breaking piece of technology to share with china in return for money and prestige. he faces a maximum amount of 80 years in prison. temple university issued this statement in light of doctor

a nebraska police officer killed in the line of duty just hours away from going on maternity leave. >> a baby was born prematurely and set to leave the hospital when that tragedy happened. cbs news correspondent don champion has more. >> reporter: the omaha storm chasers team wore blue to pay tribute to officer kerry orasco killed in the shoot-out while trying to arrest a known gang member. the shift that she was working was supposed to be her last before going on maternity leave to take care of her daughter, owe live, yeah born prematurely in february. olivia was supposed to be released from the hospital on thursday orasco wait todd take her leave so she could spend time with her daughter a at home. >> she was a friend, a popular hospital top notch person, and i just can't imagine that this has even happened. >> reporter: people have been dropping off diapers to the police and and and donations poured in around the

live from north wildwood for our first orr at the shore of the year. she's with the cbs-3 mobile weather lab. hi there, kathy. >> hi, do you know where i am? >> you are in, well, we know that is not the mobile weather lab, i'll tell thaw right now. >> i am inside a tram car. you know, these date back to the 1939 world's fair, greyhound made them for world's fair and ten years later a businessman brought them to the boardwalk because he said this is really cool. we need these to show people around this awesome boardwalk. in a few minutes i will be driving the tram car and these people will be taking their lives in their own hand. but first we will do some weather. lets go north to the margate where the the the beach is beautiful this afternoon. the the ocean water temperature is only, 59 degrees, but the air temperature is in the 70's, very comfortable. uv index is going to be high over the neck couple of days, saturday down the shore means moderate to high at seven.

consumer reporter jim donovan has some advice to keep in mind when navigating those busy highways. >> reporter: memorial day weekend brings the the start of the summer driver season. drivers should not let excitement of the long drives to the shore and vacation destination trump safety especially since the stretch between now and labor day can be one of the most dangerous times of the year to be behind the wheel. the national highway traffic safety administration has renewed its call for americans to simply buckle up, ntsa says seat belt use reached's all tie high of 87 percent in 2013 but half of the americans who died in car crashes were not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. when school lets out teens tend to do more driving and inexperience can put them at greater risk for accidents. parents should remind teens to avoid distracted driving and urge them to avoid using their smart phones in the car. limit the number of passengers and set ground rules on driving at night. drivers of all ages should

in the 40's and 30's. sunny and suburb on sunday. i dust ted off my powers of alliteration and more moisture by memorial monday. we have heat and humidity ramping up. we're talking 90's next week. we will check with kathy back down the shore. >> the key suspect in the murders of the prominent washington d.c. family and their housekeeper is in custody right now after a week long manhunt. police believe he did not act alone. cbs correspondent craig boswell has very latest from washington. >> reporter: after a two day manhunt 34 year-old daron wint is due in court prime suspect of the murder inner of the wealthy washington family and their housekeeper. law enforcement captured wint thursday night in northeast d.c. police and u.s. marshals followed him and five others as they left a maryland hotel in a car and small moving van. >> we block it in the front back side. there was in way they could get out. we had other vehicles surround the truck. and everybody just submitted

video from neptune in monmouth county. the worker who is there says it felt like an earthquake when the the deer came through the window. deer scampered around the store for a few minutes before finally finding its way out and running away. >> my first thought was, i don't know what just happened, what and then after i see the deer, i said i got to go. >> no one inside that store was injured. an unexploded world war two bomb is found near whimmably stadium in london prompting evacuation of the hundreds of people from nearby homes and businesses. construction crew made the discovery. the it is believed that the bomb was dropped on london during nazi air raid in the early 1940's. right now army is trying to diffuse the the 110-pound bomb. it is still intact after all these years underground and bomb experts say that it could still possibly blow up. >> i am shocked actually.

tlc, is now pulling the show from the air after the dougers eldest son apologized over allegations of child molestation. it is alleged 27 year-old josh douger molested several young girls, including family members, when he was a juvenile. tlc didn't address whether the popular show would ever return. well, a warning for android users tonight it appears that erasing your old device may not be as easy as you think. new study found that the factory reset option does not delete everything. researchers were able to recover text messages and other account information on smart phones, even manually deleting each and every photo and message a apparently doesn't work. the experts say your best betties to smash your old phone. yikes. we will be right back.
