♪ >> holiday weekend is upon us and whether it's the city or the shore all eyes are certainly on a very important forecast. good evening everyone. i'm natasha brown. >> i'm chris may. we'll go to the shore in just a moment but we'll begin with meteorologist kate bilo live out cbs3 sky deck with how this holiday weekend forecast is shaping up. kate? >> chris and natasha it is breezy out here a little chilly as well. we'll start off the holiday weekend way pretty cold night an

chilly start to our saturday morning. but then everything gets warmer and warmer as we move toward memorial day. let's take look outside right now you can see down in one of our beach towns rehoboth beach at the boardwalk plaza still some folk out walking around taking a stroll on the boardwalk just getting the most out of that weekend. 65 degrees right now at the boardwalk plaza in rehoboth beach but take a look at these freeze warnings aren't frost advisory. frost advisory for the poconos as you head into up into northern pennsylvania and new york state freeze warnings in effect very very cold air make its way in tonight. here's what you'll wake up to saturday morning. if you're heading to the poconos for the holiday weekend 35 degrees. you want to bring a coat. it's going to to be a cold start to saturday. 48 will be the morning low in the city. 48 in in atlantic city and 48 degrees as you wake up tomorrow morning in wilmington. so chilly start to saturday. but then take a look how sunshine helps us warm things up in the afternoon we'll get to 70 in the city. 68 degrees down the shore. and in the poconos with lots of

sunshine i'm hopeful we can make it to the mid to upper 60s there as well. it's going to be the coolest day of the memorial day weekend forecast though by far. we're talking 80s and then 90s in the seven day. i'll have that for you when i join you inside in a few minutes. chris and natasha. >> kate, thank you so much. >> after a brutal winter many people are just anxious for the summer season to final begin. many travelers made their way to the jersey shore a little early trying to beat that traffic. and to get a head start on the memorial day weekend. "eyewitness news" reporter todd quinones has more now from ocean city new jersey. >> reporter: ocean air friday night is just what the doctor ordered especially after enduring a brutally cold winter that brought with it plenty of snow and ice. it was finally time to relax and enjoy mother nature once again. >> i came down last night to beat the traffic. we were on the beach all day today. it was absolutely gorgeous. >> reporter: for those who didn't down last night the traffic delayed their day at the beach but only momentarily. >> what's on the agenda this week glenn we'll be here having

fun laying on the beach relaxing relaxing. >> reporter: any thoughts of wanting to go back to school. >> not at all. >> for the family out of jenkintown ocean city serves as a perfect place to celebrate. >> i understand today is your birthday. >> yes, it is. >> for business owners down the shore this is anything but play time. they have essentially the next three times to make enough money so they can survive throughout the year. and one business owner already behind the eight ball. fire just last week gutted gutted larry seventh street surf shack he's own since 1986. >> ran with in with the fire extinguish s it was through the ceiling. >> he'll be fully and running in time for fourth of july to try to salvage the season much as for other business owners the mayor jill jay jillian tells us economic indicators look good but like our winter if mother nature is unkind fortunes can turn. >> i think weather is really the only key. at the end of the day people

are here for the sun and the weather and that's it. we can do all the special events but the weather is our key. >> reporter: in ocean steering todd quinones, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> if you're not heading down the shore for memorial weekend there are still a lot of fun activities to get into right here in philadelphia. you can try the new outdoor roller ring at penn's landing. or you can go nearby to spruce street harbor park. it's also the ncaa men's alas championships at the linc. >> barbecue tonight on the roof. lacrosse finals tomorrow tailgating. >> there's a lot of things you can do. for example i'm here -- >> there are many other opportunities around the city as well. all with less traffic possibly less crowds than the shore. for a lives everything happening over the next few days or so you can just head to our website cbsphilly.com. meantime as a flames and plumes of dark black smoke could be seen for miles and miles away firefighters battled a huge fire at the old sunoco

refinery in south philly today. it happened on the 3000 block of penrose avenue just before 6:00 o'clock. the refinery is now known as philadelphia energy solutions girard point. chopper three hovered above this fierce fire fight as crews sprayed water on the flames. officials say a pump failed causing crude oil to burn. luck follow injured were report reported. ♪ latest now on the amtrak tragedy. cbs news is reporting the engineer of that train brandon bostian could face criminal charges if investigators find he was negligent in the crash. lawyers suggest the charges under review range from third degree murder to reckless endanger many. funerals services were held today for brooklyn college dean derrick griffith. he was one of eight people killed in that crash. dozens other passengers of train 188 are on the road to recovery tonight includeing a popular local chef. his family, friends and

customers are speaking out. here's "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt. >> we're thrilled to welcome chef eli cull top the dish. >> thank you so much. >> reporter: last summer eli kulp took his local fame to a national level chatting with the crew of cbs this morning's saturday. he's made a name for him sniffle philadelphia with sports and high street on market both pack the start of memorial day weekend. supporters were sad to learned he was one of the trains that derailed in port richmond on may 12th and currently recuperate recuperating from a spinal cord injury. >> i wish him the best. i hope he's doing okay and you know, i think it's a tragedy. >> we've been to his restaurant a number of times and we're very sad that this happened, and wish his family well and hope that he gets better very soon. >> reporter: kulp posted on twitter, everyone thank you for the texts e-mails tweets of support. if you haven't heard back from me it's not that i haven't received, i will be getting back to you all soon. i'm in great hands. i have a long road ahead but

thank you for the support. >> we're all very upset about the accident. i have family that travel up and down that train route all the time. so, you know, for all of us it's unsettling. >> kulp start tad rehab center and hopes to continue in the kitchen. on cbs this morning saturday when asked who pass past or present he would sit down for a meal with he said his grandmother phyllis. >> she had the opportunity to see me at this level of dining that. would be a real special moment for her. >> in philadelphia david spunt cbs3 "eyewitness news". friends of eli kulp started gofundme page to help with medical costs right now it's just shy of $7,000. its goal is 25,000. a broken rail disrupted both amtrak and septa service between philadelphia and thorn tail dale this morning causing some commuter headaches. the tracks are owned and maintained by amtrak. to night the rail is fixed. amtrak admits its aging infrastructure could impact the reliability of its service.

>> navy pilot safely ejects before his plane runs off t runway and plunges into the san diego bay. boaters rescued the pilot from the bay. navy officials say the pilot was training for aircraft landing qualifications when this crash happened at the north island naval base. the pilot was taken to the hospital. his condition is unknown at this point. also now the key suspect in the murder of a washington, d.c. family and their housekeeper had his first appearance in court today. police say door ran wint killed four people and then set the mansion on fire. and we're also now learning just how he was captured. the manhunt for daron wint involves one near miss and one great get. it began tuesday afternoon when dc police first identified wint as their suspect. on wednesday the task force tracked went to a girlfriend's apartment in brooklyn, new york. but just after wint's identity was made public he fled. >> they went to the location an a* itemed to arrest him but he just left. >> on thursday he returned to

the d.c. area. the task force using his friends on social media tracked him to his howard johnsons in maryland. as an arrest team was about to storm his hotel room it noticed a van and a car moving suspiciously into tandem. here was the guess. the team decideed to tail the two vehicles on the hunch wint had to be in one of hem. >> you have to make a decision based on the best information you have and you go with it. >> daron wint was captured thursday night at a stop light in washington. when a task force of 40 local police officers and u.s. marshals surrounded one of those cars. meanwhile investigators say the horror for the four victims began around sick p.m. on wednesday may 13th. when wint and possibly others held them hostage at the home. it would be 18 hours before the bodies were discovered during the fire. police reported the odor of gasoline and accelerant and matches were also found. the three savopouloss were dead but figueroa was rushed to a local hospital where she later died. while the family was being held

captive court papers say mrs. savopoulos called a local tom domino's at 9:14 wednesday. she ordered two pizza said she was nurseing a sick child won not come to the door. she asked the driver to place the two pizzas on the front porch, ring the doorbell and leave. dna that linked wint to the murders came from the dna on an unfinish slice of pizza the next morning mr. savopoulos called business associates at miss company. employees there drove to a local bank withdrew $40,000 and drove the money to the savopoulos house. the money was maced in the front seat of a red car at the home. the hostages were apparently killed a few hours later. dc police say they did recover more than $10,000 from wint's car. they will now try to connect that to the cash dropped at the crime seep. >> tragic unbelievable story really. some other surprising news in high profile case also from the nation's capitol. the murder of chandra levy.

waived to bystanders and flashed a v sign with a sign for victory hung on the drivers side door. victory parade came to an abrupt end when a bystander jumped in front of the car. the driver got out. the bystander then push the man on to the hood of a police cruiser. they were both arrested. no word on why the bystander was actually taken into custody. seems like he's helping. meantime the man convict evidence killing washington dc intern chandra levy back in 2001 will get a new trial. his attorneys argued his one-time cell mate in giving misleading testimony in the 2010 trial. illegal immigrant from el salvadoring time for other attacks on women in rock creek park when he was charged. this case drew national headlines because of levy's affair with congressman gary condit. >> that oil spill on the california coast is impacting wildlife tonight. several pelicans blackened by layers of crude oil are being

cleaned. but biologists say that that oil is likely burning their eyes and skin. their short term pain is relieved as their wash but the long-term effects of this are not known. pelicans that were rescued quickly do have a good chance of surviving. a new program kicked off today it's a fun and very interactive way to learn about hour nation's history. >> once upon a nation brings you back to the revolutionary war with historical reenactments and walk touring. "eyewitness news" in written rittenhouse square. from continental soldiers drafted adults and children into the army. series of events runs all summer long. and what a scene in jenkintown montgomery county today. thousands took part in color day. this is an annual event that dates back to 1937. wearing either red or blue competitors face off in various track and feel events and this is not just a school field day. the entire town gets involved. in fact when families moved to

jenkintown they're assigned a color. generations of families wear that same color each and every color day. as we head into the memorial day weekend when plenty of folks are planning to be outside today is called no friday. it's all in an effort to raise awareness about sun and skin cancer. and tonight health reporter stephanie stahl has more on what flip flop slap and wrap have to do with staying safe. >> reporter: on the boardwalk in ocean city are on the beach the summer season at the shore will mean plenty of sun and the american cancer society has this reminder. >> it's flip, flop flap and drap. >> flip on a t-shirt slop on your sunscreen slap on a white brim head and wrap on your sunglasses. >> with the start of summer doctors say it's important to remember there are over 3 million new cases of skin cancer diagnosed every year. most caused by sun exposure. >> skin cancer is about half of

the diagnoses when you combine all other cancers. and we know that one in five children at some point in their life will develop some sort of skin cancer. >> bad sunburn as a child can increase the cause of melanoma. >> if you let your kids smoke in eighth -- >> the biggest increase is among teenagers. especially girls. >> young women are very pre dispositioned for skin damage because all the sun exposure. as much as it mate beautify their skin the ramifications long-term life are not worth it. >> when caught early skin cancer is treatable. doctors say the best prevention is to protect your skin from the sun and use a sunscreen with an spf of 30 or higher. i'm stephanie stahl cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> okay. however you choose to protect yourself from the sun it's something we'll be needing to do

tomorrow feeling like a spring day. as the warm front lifts in it lines up here over the northern planes. we'll see the heat and humidity really ramp up starting on memorial day monday. right now skate at the airport. it's 60 in trenton but chilly 48 degrees in mount pocono. heading to the 30s overnight in the poconos. down the shore we're looking at temps in the 60s still out on the ocean city boardwalk enjoying 67 degrees with an offshore wind a land breeze right now. beautiful weekend for you saturday. high pressure overhead but still off to the west. when you're on the eastern side of a high that's generally what we think of as the cool side. northwest low coming in keeping temperatures just about at 70 degrees maybe only 60s in some spots. but then that high moves east we get into the southerly flow. the warm side of the high and temperatures hit 80 sunday low humidity but a high near 80 this is a per fact day. i love sunday. monday a little bit warmer. summer like memorial day. there's that warm front i think isolated thunderstorm possibly especially for the poconos most of us should get through without any precip so the beaches

delaware beaches sunny and cool tomorrow at 65. south jersey beaches ocean city down through wildwood and cape may mid 60s. central jersey beaches sunny skies, 67 degrees. let's take you to the poconos and that's where it will be chilly temperatures will try to climb into the mid 60s tomorrow afternoon after that very cold start. sunday looks a lot better at 74. and monday 79 even in the poconos. overnight tonight in the city mainly clear. it's chilly. 48 degrees. the winds will die down, though. and tomorrow, nice. a little cooler, 70 degrees will be our high. winds becoming west at five to 10 miles per hour. your memorial day outlook all across the region, this is looking an inflateable water slide in my backyard. 85 degrees in the city. 77 down the shore. 79 in the poconos. sun with a shower or thunderstorm possible. and your "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast notice we added the shore cast back that time of the year. warm it up through the weekend and then next week it's hot and it's humid 90 degrees on tuesday with a thunderstorm possible. hot and humid on wednesday.
