>> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news"." >> a live look now over center city philadelphia where memorial day weekend is in full swing and the weather is definitely cooperating. good evening, everyone, i'm natasha brown. thank you so much for joining us. from the shore to the city it does seem like everybody is out and about enjoying this long weekend. we did get this video a short time ago at the newly redone

harbor park where the sixers new mascot franklin was among the hundreds of people who turned out today. meteorologist justin drabick is in our weather center with look at how the rest of the memorial day weekend is shaping up. justin. >> all right, natasha, good news. really something for everyone going on. if you like the comfortable conditions you'll like the start of the holiday weekend but if you like heat and humidity just wait for memorial day. today's high temperature below average. we made it to 70 degrees. that was it. but if you were outside felt pretty warm with the strong sunshine. average high is 76. record high 96. we're not talking record temperatures but certainly each day we'll start warming it up a little bit. very comfortable right now. upper 60's tore round 70. these are the current air temperatures. coolest spot along the immediate coastline of the shore, delaware beaches pretty chilly right now ocean water temperature only 61 degrees. we're looking at coastal temperatures only in the lower 60's. look at that barnegat 59 degrees rehoboth beach at 60 degrees this hour. these dewpoint temperatures are really low.

this is what you see in the wintertime. this tells us how much moisture humidity is in the atmosphere. normally this time of year they're in the 50's, 60, 70's. 20's that's almost unheard of. that's why it's so comfortable. storm scan3 nice and quiet. high pressure keeps our skies clear tonight. a lost sunshine tomorrow, a little warmer but still comfortable, low humidity, philadelphia your high 80 degrees. low 70's at the shore, so some improvement there with the temperatures a breeze kicks up though. beautiful up in the poconos. sunshine with highs in the 70's. coming up in the full forecast we'll talk about the pleasant conditions tomorrow and more warmth on the way for memorial day in a few minutes. natasha. >> thank you justin. sun and fun. memorial day weekend kicks off the unofficial start of the summer steve patterson is live on independence mall with all the excitement here in the city. steve. >> reporter: natasha, i've been in philadelphia about a year and a half now, been down here to independence mall

about maybe several dozen times but i have never seen what i saw today. so many people coming down to check out history. i want to show you some video from earlier today. obviously this is one of the busiest times of the year but here's something else i've never seen before, natasha. maybe you have and i just haven't been paying attention. we saw one line forming to get in to see the liberty bell and because that line was so long, another one started outside near the closest window, just to snap a picture inside. this weekend thousands from all over the world coming really to see the cradle of this country right here in olde city and all weekend scheduled concerts, reenactments, flag ceremonies, all happening right here. we spoke to people, tourist abouts why they came out. >> living here on the east coast is so much different than it is on the west coast. so it's legally really fascinating. >> we live in such a historic

cbsphilly.com. >> developing now protesters take to the streets in cleveland after a police officer is acquitted in the fatal shooting of two unarmed black motorists. the officers mistook the sound of their car back firing as gun shots. henna daniels has more on the verdict. >> reporter: police officer michael brelo broke down in tears after he was found not guilty inside a cleveland courtroom. the verdict comes after a four week trial and in the shooting deaths of timothy russell and melissa williams. the judge ruled prosecutors failed to prove brelo fired the fatal shot. >> he is legally excused from liability. >> reporter: demonstrators outside the courthouse expressed their frustration of the ruling. brelo is the only officer criminally charged despite a high speed chase involving about 100 of his colleagues. the pursuit began when a 1979 chevy malibu driven by russell

apparently backfired while passing police headquarters. the noise was mistaken for a gun shot. after a 20 minute chase the car was boxed in when police officers fired 137 shots. brelo fired the most including 15 shots when he climbed onto the hood of the car and shot at the unarmed pair through the windshield. >> there was testimony from other officers that indicated that they thought that it was wrong. >> reporter: last year the u.s. attorney general released a report finding cleveland's police had engaged in a pattern of excessive force. saturday the department of justice announced it will review the testimony and evidence presented in brelo's trial n new york, henna daniels for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, now we do have an update on the people injured in last week's amtrak train crash. temple university hospital says that four victims are still receiving treatment there tonight. two of those patients are in critical condition. eight people died and more than 200 were injured when

train 188 derailed on may 12th. federal investigators say the train hit a turn in port richmond at more than 100 miles an hour. a four car collision on the schuylkill expressway, it leaves one person dead. it happened just before 5 o'clock in the eastbound lanes of i-76 at passyunk avenue. the crash investigation tied up several lanes of traffic as police worked to determine the cause of the accident. and a fashion al referendum ireland has legalized same-sex marriage. (applause). the results were announced at dublin castle where activists celebrated inside and outside. more than 62 percent of irish citizens choosing marriage equality. ireland is the first company to legalize gay marriage through a popular vote. the future of the patriot act is in jeopardy tonight.

>> memorial day weekend is a time to just kick back and fire up the grille with friends and family but that didn't stop some folks from getting up at the crosswalk of dawn today to compete for a very good cause down the shore. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff takes us there. >> reporter: steps away from a golden boardwalk sunrise a crowd of athletes were also rising to the occasion. >> be inspired by the sacrifice and the courage of all our fallen warriors. >> reporter: over 500 participants gathered on ninth street to participate in this year's ocean city memorial day

beach challenge. >> jersey shore, the sun is out, right not bad. >> colder than expected but we're going to be sweating and running our butts off so i think it's perfect weather. >> i'm not really sure. i'm looking down there trying to figure out what it is. it looks a little daunting. >> reporter: for some this weekend is about rest and relaxation but not these folks. they're heading off for a obstacle course and a a 4-mile paddle board competition followed by a kids fun run. >> the water is a little chilly. the winds are pretty slack calm conditions so i don't expect too many falls. >> reporter: by sand by air and by sea. all proceeds will benefit three veterans and military family charities. but more than money organizers say the true goal is to remind beachgoers of the brave men and women to whom this holiday is dedicated. >> every single one of us here is just here because we want to teach a new generation what memorial day is about and to

help our veterans and families of the fallen. >> we have to think about what affords us the freedoms we have. >> reporter: reporting in ocean city alexandria hoff cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, camden county also remembered the true meaning of memorial day today as well. >> ♪ the freeholder board hosted a memorial day ceremony at the camden county veterans cemetery. "eyewitness news" in camden today. the ceremony is held every year to honor the memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. now, philadelphia students, they took time this holiday weekend to help victims of the devastating earthquakes that hit nepal. the water for nepal fundraising event that was held at mifflin square today. students sold food drinks and asked for donations. more than 8,000 people were killed in the nepal earthquake that struck on april 25th and may 12th. more than a million were

injured. >> justin the all important memorial day weekend forecast. looking good so far. >> yeah, we are lucking out. a lost sunshine, that its great news. barbecue plans hitting the pool, the beach or maybe the poconos. little chilly right now especially down the shore but we'll warm it up a little bit. if you like summer weather just wait a few more days. we even bring back some of that humidity to give that you unofficial start to the summer season pretty much on schedule. look at this. this is rehoboth beach. live look from our neighborhood network. 58 degrees right now. yes, that ocean water is chilly. upper 50's to around 60. then you got that wind right off the ocean but still people out on the beach. may need that sweatshirt possibly this evening if you're heading outside. really inland or at the coast. temperatures are going to drop off. we're talking some 40's for some locations for the overnight low temperatures tonight. how about that? here we are right now sitting at 70 in philadelphia in allentown, 69 trenton, upper 60's millville and dover delaware cooler spots along the immediate shore lineuper 50's to lower 60's its really the northeast

that's the core of the cold air. albany scranton also in the low and upper 60's but get to our west on pittsburgh, cleveland we start to warm up, even d.c. in the low 70's this hour. so that milder air will work its way northeast. give it another 12 to 24 hours or so. look at this. nothing happening on storm scan3. this is what you want to see for a holiday weekend. a lot of sunshine in our forecast, try weather, great travel conditions coming up. comfort index again very high. as we talk about that dewpoint temperature, measures the moisture content in the air. right now it's so low at 27 degrees, tomorrow it gets a little bit higher, about 47, that's not bad for late may. so again it's going to feel pretty much awesome outside. get outside if you can, enjoy it. let's break it down for you. high pressure over us right now protecting any storms from developing. moves a little further off shore tomorrow, southwest wind warming us up to 80, maybe low 80's for the inland spots.

warmer on memorial day mid 80's for highs. still a lot of sunshine. we'll keep it dry. tuesday the front slowly approach from the west but it's still well to our west. i still think we'll make it through the day dry. humidity increases for tuesday. high temperatures get close to 90 degrees for the inland locations. but nothing happening on our future weather model through the overnight mostly clear skies. keep the windows opened. great sleeping weather. here's your sunday forecast. maybe a few afternoon clouds pop up during the mid and late afternoon hours. same deal for memorial day. looks good, lots of sunshine, maybe a few clouds breaking out in the afternoon. let's talk temperatures. here we go. tomorrow morning at sunrise look at that, 40's across many suburbs to the north and west, the mid-50's for philadelphia, parts of south jersey near the shore may hang around that 60-degree mark. into sunday afternoon look at that, very comfortable, mid and upper 70's for many spots to near 80 degrees for the inland locations. and then memorial day itself look at that, now we're well into the 80's so really starts

feeling like summer for memorial day but still hey we'll take it, dry conditions, humidity levels really not too bad on monday. overnight pleasant, mostly clear 52 for the low temperature. tomorrow little warmerrer still nice and comfortable 80 degrees for the afternoon high. maybe you're hitting the shore. still cool, breezy, low 70's before the sea breeze kicks in. ocean water temperature chilly 61. u.v. index high with all that sunshine. memorial day forecast, it's a go open up the pools, 85 with partly sunny skies. here we go, the extended forecast this week, warming it up each day. 80 on sunday, 85 memorial day then looks like we hit a string of 90-degree temperatures for tuesday and wednesday. now, starting wednesday through friday, there could be a scattered shower or a storm in the afternoon, so typical midsummer stuff, upper 80's to around 90 degrees but comfortable start to the holiday weekend. >> best memorial day ever. >> it is. >> and because of that the barbecue is at your house. >> is it? >> come on over.

>> i don't know if i could get a grille out there. is that legal? we don't know t. >> the phillies are down in washington. >> that's right, the phillies playing game two of their three game series with the nationals down in washington. we have cole hamels on the mound today. stephen strasburg pitching for the nats but the phillies all over the washington's ace. ryan howard pulls an rbi double into the right field gap. that scores a run, puts the phils up two to nothing. next batter, we have mickle franco. he continues to impress in the big leagues here. opposite field home run for the score two more runs and the phillies are going to go up four to nothing. strasburg pulled after three innings. right now the phillies up eight-nothing in the seventh inning. playoff action tonight. we have game three between the rockets and warriors. golden state up two to nothing in the series, steph curry had 33 points in game. james harden says they'll need to pick up their did he first on the league m.v.p.

>> ♪ >> welcome back every un. battleship new jersey celebrated the 72nd anniversary of its commissioning today. dozens of folks turned out for the commissioning ceremony on the camden waterfront. it featured speakers including a purple heart recipient. a wreath was cast into the delaware river in memory of crew members who passed away. it's motto is fire power for freedom. it's the most decorated battleship in the history of
