ike summer today. but what a fantastic memorial day weekends it was. we had everything from cool, sunny saturday, to the hot and slightly steamy weather today. let's take a look outside on storm scan3 see nothing really happening. quiet all across the region at the moment. any storms are firing well off to the north and to the west, and you can see that line of showers up over new england that's indicative of warmfront, that's well to the north, and that's what has ushered all of this warm moist air in, from the south and west. and we will be feeling it for the next few days, in fact, next few days are even warmer and more humid than today. it feels great out here right now, with the breeze blowing the shade 86 degrees at the airport, 86 allentown, 80 atlantic city, 77 wildwood. perfect beach day perfect city day we're out in wick a hick on park with the boys this afternoon riding our bike, people out on the trails, get, work out in before the memorial day barbeque. plan on being out late this evening, sitting outside enjoying the afternoon it will stay nice and warm many temperatures in the 80s and our first forecast for this

memorial day night 80 degrees at 7:00 p.m. by 9:00 p.m. 74, and mainly clear, and still warm, at 11:00 p.m. 71 degrees, with the clear sky, but as we head into the next couple of days, temperatures just continues to ramp up. talking 90s and possibly, close to a heatwave, as we head through the next few days, that is warm finish to may. i'll have the seven day coming up in just a bit. jessica, back inside to you. >> kate, see now little bit. plenty of people taking advantage of this gorgeous weather down the shore. new jersey reporter cleve bryan is live in ocean city where local businesses cashed in all weekend long cleve? >> that's right, we hear from many of the businesses that things were just terrific. people were here in big crowds, in fact, many of them don't want to leave. we are area here across from the ocean city music peer, many sitting down doing people watching enjoying the ice cream, all the treats that you can buy on the board walk, this is the weekend that people will not want to forget. whether it was having a catch

or digging in the sand, it was a picture perfect memorial day at the shore. >> oh, it was beautiful absolutely gorgeous day. >> the franklin family from northeast philadelphia were all about building sand castles and putting winter in the rear-view mirror. >> being together with the family yes, enjoying the beach, and catching some sun actually. >> little ava's gym that is innings got cheers on the beach. and up on the boardwalk, store owners were head over heals about the amount of business this weekend. >> we had an outstanding weekends, it was record breaking. >> schrivers candy salt more taffy and 20 batches of fudge than memorial day weekend last year. >> we actually had to have somebody run in here and make more fudge make more taffy so we're -- we had great weekends. we were really happy. >> the number one industry in cape may county tourism. exact figures later this week about hotel and parring g lot counts. all indications are this was a banner weekend. >> it really does start off

with memorial day sometimes it can be cold, and wet so we're fortunate this year, it has been three spectacular days of weather, and this really help merchants. >> reporter: do you see sunshine? people still smiling, waiving to each other, waiving to us, having terrific time on the board walk, although many of them will want to get in their cars soon so they can try to beat the traffic headed back away from the shore. reporting live from ocean sit cleve bryan cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> all right, clever, looks nice out there. thanks so much. many mom oriole day observances were held all around the region today. >> ♪ ♪ >> "eyewitness news" in doylestown, bucks county, veterans marched from cb west high school to doylestown cemetery. that will parade included military theme groups and also community organizations. american flags, and wreath decorated the courthouse in

media. that's where the town wrapped up its annual parade, and afterward, many veterans lingered around that courthouse, sharing stories about what memorial day means to them. >> one of the delaware valley's oldest memorial day parades was held right here in philadelphia. "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch has the story from bridesburg. >> reporter: what a mix, moving down richmond street, allows for all who take part. this shady patch already claimed. >> every year this is where do you have sit, right here, in the shade beginning the parade you catch everything. >> eight year old madison long time spectator and first time march err with her brownie troop. >> do you think you'll mess up? >> no. >> the parade, the dream come true of world war ii vet edward marine who served in hiro hiro jima and came home to found the parade. >> that way when you think about all of the people who come out support your dream how does it make you feel?

>> very good, very good. >> oldest memorial day par aches we're told it does much more. >> memorial day parade is one of the things that keeps the neighborhood so tight-knit. >> five years ago organizers say the parade almost didn't happen. times were tough, cash is hard to come by. but the organize nerves bridesburg say they didn't give up. instead they gave it their all. raising money to keep the parade going and all say they'll keep doing so, to honor the men and women who gave their lives, and to keep edward due beck's dream alive n bridesburg, justin finch cbs-3, "eyewitness news". and, virginia, president obama honored those who gave their lives protecting our freedom. the president laid a wreath of the tomb of the unknown soldier at arlington national cemetery. he paid tribute to unknown american soldiers from world war world war i world war ii, korea and viet nam. afterward the president said the sacrifices of the men and women in our armed forces will never be forgotten.

and this year, we mark a historic anniversary, 07 years, since our victory in world war ii. more than 16 million americans left everything they new to fight for our freedom. more than 400,000 gave their lives. >> the president also said this is the first memorial day in 14 years in which the united states is not engaged in a major grounds war. >> and actual is agents ceremony held today on board the historic battleship new jersey. the u.s. citizen ship and i am graduation services conduct that ceremony, nearly 50 people from countries around the world were sworn in as new american citizens, after reciting the oath of allegiance. >> our family here, i work here, i live here, so, make citizenship here. >> wreath ceremony also held. coming up tonight at 6:00 hear

the personal stories every some of our newest citizens. are you looking for something to do tonight before the holiday weekend comes it an ends? you can head over to cbsphilly.com. there we posted list of events in towns all across the delaware valley. a series of telephone threats against commercial airliners led to searches of at least two planes at new york's kennedy airport today. in one instance, us military jets escort add air france flight into the city, but nothing was found on the plane. authority also cleared two flights that landed in newark, one was a delta flight, coming from glands, the second, a united flight coming in from scotland. anonymous calls reported chemical weapon, and a bomb, on those planes. but that was false. authorities say all of these calls, might have come from the same sours, and they do not believe the threats to be credible. resident of a philadelphia condo buildings are spending memorial day without power and water and the outage is also affecting some local

businesses. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria in rittenhouse square now with more details. alexandria? >> reporter: it was a showcase every suitcases through the doors every ten rittenhouse where hundreds of residents had been on the move for more than 24 hours. >> i'm waiting for a car to take me to my friend today. >> ruth had the content of her freezer packed up. as she vacated her powerless apartment which was also water less since it is powered by an electrical pump. >> has it been inconvenient for you? >> of course. there is no water. there is no air-conditioning. >> a peco spokesperson told "eyewitness news", an underground wire was damaged and its position therefore delayed repairs. >> water elevators, anything electric, even the water is pumped electrically. >> reporter: white barnes and noble utilized another power source, no air-conditioning, and most other businesses on the block were left in the dark. >> we are busy, and the power went out and people have to leave.

>> inside after shadowy, chef watches helplessly as would be customers walked on by. >> it is a shame. because we are supposed to get very busy today. beautiful holiday. but we don't have power. so we are waiting for it to come back. >> and wait something what most have done. frustrated by thanks to good weather, in good spirits. >> we have two dogs, so it's been a little bit of inconvenience. >> but i did just peak with a peco representative. they told me that while this above-ground temporary line is being installed right now, a fit for this is still not likely to happen until about 11:00 p.m. tonight. reporting live from rittenhouse square, alexandria cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> thanks so much. police are looking for a gunman who opened fire on a man in north philadelphia today. this happened on the corner of 28th and allegheny today around noon. police say the victim was shot twice, once in the head, and once in the arm. he's now in stable condition at temple hospital. police have one person in

custody but they do not believe he's the shooter. meanwhile, the search continues for a killer who gunned down a man in west philadelphia early today. this happened shortly after 1:30 this morning near the intersection of 41st and aspen streets. police responds today a call for a man shot in the shoulder. paramedics returned him to presbyterian hospital where he later died. and police believe the victim may have known the shooter. officers are also investigating a sexual assault in south philadelphia. just after 5:00 this morning 35 year old woman woke up to see an unknown man standing over her bed. he reportedly placed his hand over her mouth demanded money, and then us a at dollars her. neighbors say this is a normally quiet street. >> anything like this happen ever around here? >> no, not that i know of, and i been here like 17 years. i don't think so. >> reporter: the suspect took $10, plus the victim's car and house keys. he reportedly also took her

>> more severe weather is expected after a line of storms dumped record rainfall on parts of texas oklahoma and other planes, in mid western states. at least three people were killed, a dozen are still missing, and thousands were forced from their homes. omar villafranca has more from wimberlee, texas, one of the hardest hit areas. >> reporter: the blanko river in san marcus, texas rose 26 feet in just one hour. the river overflowed flooding roads and wiping away homes. >> you have 12 missing persons that we are actively searching for. >> reporter: first responders used a helicopter to lift its 68 year old father, trapped in the river for two hours. >> hold on. please don't leave. please don't leavement i'm here for you. i'm here for you. he's just like i don't know what to tell you i'm sore. >> i there was another

dramatic rescue near austin, kayaker struggled to keep his head above the rushing waters of the san gabriel river until bystanders pulled him to safety. nearby wimberlee was also hit hard. hundreds of homes were destroyed. >> the river swells dozens every feet and 100 year old trees were uprooted. this home was ripped off its foundation and pushed into the hillside. this area will come back. >> oh, yes. >> it will. it will. >> reporter: massive flooding also hit oklahoma two people were killed, including a firefighter, who was trying to evacuate stranded residents. >> he's our hero. that's for sure. >> reporter: the storms also spawned a tornado that damage add houston apartment complex. omar villafranca cbs-3 "eyewitness news". about 100 miles southwest of wimberlee flood waters killed a teenage girl on her way home from prom when her car was swept away. attacks i driver remains hospitalized after the car crash that claimed the life of

>> plenty of memorial day fun today at the blue cross river rink summer fest on columbus boulevard. this was the kick already off weekend for the river rink and the newly re-done spruce street harbor park nearby. both of those will be open for the rest of the summer, all the way through the end of september. check those out. no matter where you are enjoying the holiday weekends, part of the excitement firing up the grill maybe for the first time this season. today philadelphia fire commissioner derrick sawyer put on the barbeque apron in order to remind people, safety first, the commissioner and chef mc houston of jack firehouse restaurant says it starts with lighting the grill, whether you are using charcoal or propane. >> we want to make sure you have the proper tank, one that you approve take warm soapy water, and just spread it around the edges if not still corrected you will see it will start bubble up. >> biggest mistake with charcoal is lighting that

expansion to make the site more visible and also, help deter sands dales. former prisoner of war was the keynote speaker at today's ceremony. ralph galatti spent 14 months captive do your the during the viet nam war. >> may addition agree with our government, you may not support a particular conflict, but at least respect the soldiers and sailors air men and marines that have honorably served our country. >> philadelphia veterans of the viet nam war first dedicated the memorial on penn's landing back in 1987. >> sixty years after he went missing in korea a the remains of an american army corporal have been identified through a dna match. today robert higgins honored as a service man killed in action. steve patterson was there. >> reporter: on this memorial day, city officials on hands to honor the lives after estimated 40,000 americans who died in the korean war. >> for years we never new

what every happened to him. >> for more than 06 years that number did not include the story of robert higgins the 20 year old declared mia in 1951. and for all of those years, their families, forgotten son lost to what some call the forgotten war. >> every once in a while my dad would bring him up, we would talk about him he said i'll guess i'll never know what happened to my brother. >> but one year ago that all change wad single phonecall. >> it was out of the blue. >> the military took possession of hundreds of remains from the war, two samples discovered in the 90s were submitted for dna testing, that can now be done with phones and a match came back. robert was coming home. >> we just said that is miracle. it is -- how can this happen? >> reporter: here lives corporal his inches, after his family took possession every had his remains, they burried him here. closure some six decades in the making. turns out, higgins was a

prisoner of war taken during a fierce battle. now, laid to rest. >> we are very happy you know, that they were able to identify him. >> the record now reflect kia instead of mia. for this family, memorial day now a time of reference instead of wonder. in newtown steve patterson cbs-3, "eyewitness news". been more than a week since isis militants seized key iraqi city of ramadi. they helped to take that city back, now fierce that more of the province that is in could fall to that terror group. correspondent jonathan biglioti reports. >> reporter: thirsty exhausted, thousands of refugees fled iraq's province on foot, out of fear the entire region could soon fall to isis. this man says all of our properties and animals were destroyed. we don't know the destiny of our families. more than 40,000 people have

escaped since isis took control of ramadi nearly two weeks ago and reportedly carried out public executions as fear tactic. this isis video showed american backed iraqi soldiers, fleeing out of the city us offense officials say iraqi troops lost the will to fight. security analysts say they could fuel tensions among the sunni population. it has been nine months, since the us led coalition began air strikes against isis, and militants are still seizing territory in both iraq and across the border in syria. on wednesday militants captured the ancient city, and activist said fighters executed more than 200 people, including children. this video claims to show militants rallying residents in the streets. jonathan biglioto "eyewitness news". >> graduation even more unforgettable this year for

tonight, where you live could boost a baby's risk of sudden infant death syndrome. researchers at a birth and death certificate registry of babies in colorado over seven years. they found babies living in attitudes above 8,000 feet were at more than twice the risk for sids. about 2,000 american babies died from sids every year. >> many us hospitals have stop sending new moms home with free formula samples. public health officials oppose the freebies, because they say it discourages breast feeding. 2013 just under one third of us maternity wards offer give aways, versus nearly three/four in 2007. 3,000 hospitals were surveyed. and, a new british study finds dyslexia in children is not linked to eyesight. researchers found more than eight in ten children diagnosed with dyslexia had perfect scores on their vision tests. >> it is graduation time experts say it is a good time to be a graduate. loved ones are ready to spend big bucks to congratulate them. the national retail federation
