ning i'm chris may. guess case off tonight. today marks the second an letters/of that deadly building collapse in center city philadelphia six people died that day, 14 more were injured when a vacant building being demolished collapsed on that salvation army store at 22nd and market. today, for the first time, the woman described as a miracle survivor, met her rescuers. our pat ciarrocchi was there as they embraced. >> i was the firemen who found you. >> yes. >> you're welcome. you are welcomed. >> reporter: moment felt sacred miracle survivor of the horrific building collapse meets a fire chief who heard her cries. >> i was so afraid nobody would find me, nobody would save me and i tried to scream, help. >> reporter: nearly 13 hours earlier maria plek an, native of ukraine walked in the salvation armored thrift shop at between the second and market. a wall collapsed on to the shop trapping and crushing maria.

it was 11:00 o'clock. fire chief john o'neill heard a faint voice in the quiet. >> when i first saw her move it scared me. >> reporter: within moments the extrication began maria's close friend translates her story. >> i realized that it was dark and light was very difficult to see. i was praying inside of myself, that they found me, they found me and i'm alive. >> reporter: maria's crushing injuries have been devastating, she has had to endure a bilateral amputation up to the pelvis complicated by infections. how does she feel. >> it is not that good, not very, very bad. >> reporter: initially chief o'neill a 26 year veteran of the department wondered whether not very, very bad was enough. >> what did i put her through you know did i give her quality of life back. i just struggled with, you know, would the other side of

the coin been better. >> reporter: he was asking, would death have been kinder for this once vibrant woman but on the first anniversary of the collapse maria had publicly expressed her gratitude to still be with her family, that changed everything for owe neil. >> sometimes, it is very difficult to deal with what i have to do but i'm thank full for my life and i'm able to enjoy my kid every day. i'm able to see my granddaughter, and i'm able to enjoy that. >> reporter: you cannot help but be moved by maria's courage. her medical bills topped eight million-dollar and cost of her lifetime care will be astronomical according to her attorney but for now you two people brought together by fate can be a at peace knowing that the wound that you cannot see are healing too. in the sat center, pat ciarrocchi cbs-3 "eyewitness

news". >> i will never forget that moment that night when they found a survivor, a true miracle and what a story this is. thank you very much. today another ceremony commemorated that tragic day in center city and honored victims who lost their lives. there are plans, underway to erect a permanent memorial at 22nd and market. today the city of philadelphia donated $300,000 toward that memorial. nancy winkler who lost her daughter ann in the collapse spoke at today's event. >> ann's death has left a terrible void in our family which can never be filled. i become very emotional when i speak about ann. i miss her so much. but still i love to talk about her because she was here. she mattered. >> nancy winkl er has led the all volunteer campaign to build a memorial honoring those victims. well hundreds of people gathered once again to say

good bye to the former delaware attorney general beau biden. a second viewing is getting underway in wilmington right now. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff is live outside the church with more, alex. >> reporter: just as we saw around 1:00 p.m. people have gathered and lining up down at the other end of the block. that is where that line is right now. it is growing. this is the the second opportunity of the day to pay respects to the open until 9:00 p.m. tonight. in the dreary morning hours vivid red white and blue, same colors worn by casket carrying former state attorney general, beau biden as he was in the company of the people of delaware and beyond for the last time. >> we have been here for 50 years in wilmington and we are with the family. >> our family, owes him a debt of gratitude. >> reporter: thousands waited for an hour or more to pay their respects during public

viewing, general brumel served with beau in the national guard. >> he would teach us all humility and patriotism and strong commitment to his nation. >> reporter: beau was forced to retreat from dreams of one day running for governor, so he he could focus on his family and health as he battled brain cancer. that battle ended saturday. beau was 46 and leaves behind a wife and two young children. many say they turnout as much for beau as they did for elder biden, in the because he was their senator or their current vice-president but because he is a father that has suffered too many losses. >> encourage him just like everybody else. hopefully he will understand how grateful the the people in this state are for his family. >> reporter: the vice-president did not make an appearance today. he was at yesterday's viewing. once again the doors of saint anthony's here in wilmington will be opened until 9:00 p.m. tonight. reporting live, alexandria hoff for cbs-3 "eyewitness

the lower 70's. philadelphia is 75. you can see 66 in atlantic city where we have more cloud. coastal low is pushing the the cloud cover back into parts of the burlington county, ocean county and even atlantic county but slowly that is moving away. temperatures responding to sunshine mid 07's in philadelphia, 72 in wilmington. seventy-five in reading. you can see quite warm in the lehigh valley. we have a cold front approaching from the west and as it does, it will bring additional cloud cover tonight and maybe a few spotty showers tomorrow. here's the forecast, we will start off with some clouds tomorrow in philadelphia, and then give way to sun. the temperature 82 degrees. spotty shower possible down the shore 72, and poconos looking good, with plenty of sunshine and 74. it will be improving weekend only getting better, more on that with the the forecast from city to the shore coming up with the seven day later in the broadcast chris. >> we will see you then, kathy, thank you. there are new developments in the botched robbery of the northeast philadelphia pizza

shop. police identified andrew he willer bee as the man killed in a shoot-out with the customer who turned out to be an off-duty detective. as "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco tells us the the case is far from closed as police try a second suspect. >> reporter: two masked men walked in the rising sun pizza hospital in lawn dale thursday night and announced a robbery putting an gun to an off-duty police detective's head. what they didn't know is that the detective had just walked into pick up dinner. >> he took money from his hand ordered him to the ground, at that point in time, and they turned their direction away from him. he stood backup, pulled his firearm and he announced he was a police officer. once the suspect fired he fired back. >> reporter: detectives engaged the men in the gunfight hitting one in the torso. suspect dropped revolver as they ran. police say they were only blanks in the suspect's gun. a three three-year old man was found collapsed nearby shot in the torso. he died minutes later and was

identified by pizza shop employees as one of the robbers. the detective was not injured. >> we're very fortunate today that he is a alive and well and just speaks volumes about the dangers of this job. >> reporter: police are reviewing surveillance video looking for a second man. the entire incident was caught on camera inside and outside the pizza shop. >> the crime up here is gone up drastically. it is a shame. five years ago when we moved up here, it wasn't bad now this is nothing new. >> reporter: tonight the accident, the detectives are being hailed as heroic, police are still looking for that second suspect. outside police headquarters i'm diana rocco for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". camden county police department need your help trying to identify suspect caught on video setting vehicles on fire. take a look at this from monday night that shows suspects breaking windows of the van and then using some kind of an accelerant to set it on fire. shortly after this happened in

camden there were two other vehicle fires in pennsauken and police say the same people are to blame. they want them off the streets before something even worse can happen. >> it could be someone in the vehicle, god forbid if they are not paying attention it is dark outside, somebody could be in the vehicle or fit is close to the house you can start a house fire. >> anyone with any information on those suspects is asked to contact the camden county police. four philadelphia men have been arrested in connecticut accused of trying to steel luxury suv from the car dealer. clockwise are anwar carter, ernest smith jasenton cobbs and victor strong. police say those men were caught outside a land rover dealership where there was a big hole, cut in the fence. men are accused of planning to steel three range rovers valued at more than $150,000. well, excitement continues to build over the pope's upcoming visit to philadelphia.
