[cheers and applause] >> reporter: it is one of the rarest scenes in american sports, 37 years of disappointment, erased in under three minutes. finally a triple crown. [cheers and applause] >> finally won. happy. >> reporter: twilight saturday at the parx casino you would think tim tebow just came off the bench to win the super bowl. maybe it's hard to understand the excitement until you understand how long people have been waiting for this. >> my heart was beating so fast when he was coming up. i was like oh no, no. >> reporter: camden's dwight williams believed it was going to happen and then been disappointed more than a dozen times since 1978. >> i never thought that i would live to this time, 37 years, i'm 60 something. >> reporter: if you think it's just the older crowd you would be wrong. >> i just witnessed history. i'm going save the program. i'm going to save everything. i might not even cash these

tickets. >> reporter: they've done the research. >> back in 1978, his odds he wop. winner winner chicken dinner. >> reporter: american pharaoh made winning the belmont stakes look easy beating the field by several lengths topping dozens of horses to take the triple crown. making many fans a little bit richer an whole lot happier. >> he went wire to wire. >> reporter: a lot of folks cashing in, american pharaoh a heavy three to five favorite and now the 12th winner of the triple crown. reporting from the parx casino i'm steve patterson cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> wow what an exciting win. 11 years ago philadelphia's own smarty jones lost the triple crown in a heartbreaking upset at belmont. smarty had the lead coming down the stretch looked as though he would win before bird stone surged past him in the final strides to win by a narrow margin.

smarty jones is now retired. more clouds meantime than sun on this saturday but tomorrow is shaping up to be a perfect spring day for us. we deserve it. we've had cloudy days. meteorologist justin drabick is in the weather center with more details. >> getting rid of that pacific northwest weather and we'll talk about more sunshine in our forecast but we had rain today and check this out some "eyewitness news" video again this is from wildwood and cape may. several inches of water flooded the streets in wildwood earlier today. viewers sent us photos from around the town. remember do not attempt to drive through flooded or high water on roadways. it only take about a foot of water to move a car 2 feet to move a large vehicle and 6-inches of fast moving of water will knock you down. that's the story. stay out of the flooded roadways whether driving or walking. we'll show you on estimated doppler radar where this rain was. again not much across the

delaware valley but the bull's-eye was down in cape may county, new jersey, right over wildwood, there you go that yellow and orange indicating two maybe 3-inches of rainfall from a quick storm that rolled on through so that's certainly had heavy rainfall rates with that storm system earlier this afternoon. now we're clearing out nicely. we're setting up to see a nice night across the delaware valley. the clouds are gone. nice refreshing breeze out of the north temperatures dropping. 50's mount pocono, everybody else in the 60's, also atlantic city airport at 58 degrees. the humidity levels are gone. the reason is the wind direction is out of the north and northeast. that's a cooler flow. so temperatures actually drop a little bit below average over the next 24 hours. here's the sunday morning temperatures waking up into the upper 50's for the city but surrounding suburbs we're going to be dropping into the low 50's, maybe even some sports in some of the cool spots for sunday morning. by the afternoon a lot of sunshine. we rebound to 78 degrees which is actually below average for this time of year. at the shore a little bit breezy wind off the water keeps your temperature there

>> well, president obama and family members delivered emotional eulogies at the funeral of beau biden today. the former delaware attorney general and son of the vice president was remembered as a great man with a big heart. we get more now from "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff in wilmington. >> ♪ >> reporter: with somber stairs supporters watched on from behind barricades as vice president and former delaware senator joe biden comforted his now widowed daughter-in-law as his son's flag draped casket was received by saint anthony's of padua church. >> how do you say goodbye to the finest man any of us have ever known. >> understood the importance of maintaining trust with his fellow soldiers and with the public to gain justice and the victims he fought so hard for. >> ♪ amazing grace ♪ >> reporter: born joseph robin net biden the third beau was the oldest of his father's

a suspect wanted for killing his ex-girlfriend is found dead in an apparent suicide. police have been searching for 45-year-old michael eitel since thursday for allegedly stabbing carol bone to death. she was found unresponsive in a berlin township drive way wednesday night. police say bone had a protection order against eitel. also today, authorities in lehigh county ruled the death of a three-year-old girl who fell four stories from a window accidental. it happened on the 700 block of turner street in allentown late last night. authorities have identified the little girl as tamara arnett. the victim's five-year-old sister who also fell out of the window remains hospitalized and is currently in critical condition. police are working to try to determine exactly what led to the fall. and a 17-year-old man is in critical condition after he was shot nine times in germantown. it happened just after 1:30 this morning near germantown avenue and bringhurst street.

>> a california bus driver is being hailed a hero for stopping a kidnapping suspect on his own bus. when an alert came out that a three-year-old boy had been abduct fred a library the bus driver recognized the suspect from the police description who was with a crying boy on the bus. now, the driver pulled over pretended to look for a bag. that's when he called the police. >> what i was really trying to do was get up without him knowing to look at the little boy. so sure enough i see the played shorts and red shoes. that's what really stuck outer in my mind. >> very observant. the suspect tried to get off the bus with the boy but police were right there waiting for him. police say the suspect has no connections to the boy's family and right now they are trying to figure out a motive. the first official photos of princess charlotte have been released and see for yourself they're adorable. you can see the newest member of britain's royal family in the arms of her big brother prince george. the photos were taken by their mother, the duchess of cambridge in mid may.

charlotte was born on may second and is fourth in line to their throne. a local family meantime breaks the guinness world record for the largest cup of lemonade. michael and trish atkins hosted the event today in lindenwold, new jersey, to raise money for alex's lemonade stand. the atkins daughter lilly survived cancer after she was diagnosed way brain tumor eight years ago and her family has hosted a lemonade stand ever since. >> the message is mr. find a cure. wherever you are, go ahead and stop at an alex's lemonade stand. give your donation. know that alex is dedicated to the legacy of alex scott to find a cure for cancer one cup at a time. >> it shatters the previous record by nearly 200 gallons. and this thursday we are taking a stand for hope. cbs3 and the cw philly are very proud to partner with alex's lemonade stand foundation raising money for

violent storms spawned tornadoes thursday and friday and more could touchdown today. over 12,000 people in the denver area woke up without power this morning. the twisters have damaged several homes but no injuries have been reported so that's great news there. certainly hopefully their weather clears up like ours. not much happening outside right now, maybe a few fair weather clouds as we look at center city from our roof camera. real comfortable. you can open up those windows maybe shut the ac off save a couple bucks on the electric bill. here's why. look at storm scan3. nice and quiet. we're dominated by an area of high pressure parked over new england so skies have cleared out nicely. nice refreshing breeze out of the north and northeast. and that's what's pushing out all the humidity. like i mentioned we certainly did need that rain. as we look at the drought monitor actually this is looking much better than it was a couple of weeks ago. still the areas in yellow basically from philadelphia on northward abnormally dry. not considered drought status. the exception will be the poconos. monroe county right there still in the level one drought status but we made a dent from

all the rain we've had so that's certainly good news but we could use a little more over the next few weeks. look at these comfortable temperatures. low 50's -- 60's, even upper 50's. 65 scranton. that will push farther south through the overnight hours so somewhat of a cool start to our sunday morning. now, the dewpoint temperatures tells us how much moisture or humidity is in the air. right now that number is 56. that's comfortable as you step outside you can actually breathe and it feels nice. tomorrow that dewpoint lowers even more indicating a drier air mass. we're looking at 50-degree dewpoints. it's going to feel awesome for the day on sunday. so, don't get used to it, though. enjoy it while you can 'cause things will change on monday. here's why. high that's over us right now stays over new england tomorrow. keeps things nice and pleasant, a lot of sun and then comes monday. we get a warm front that pushes through. the wind switch around out of the south. we bring back the humidity and then there will be the chance for some afternoon showers and

thunderstorms coming in on monday as a cold front approaches. that front still in the region on tuesday, so we can't rule out a few more showers maybe even a thunderstorm but the story will be the increasing heat and humidity that will build across the region. looks good tomorrow morning. this is 7 o'clock sunday morning. a lost sunshine, maybe a few fair weather clouds around. into the afternoon get outside, enjoy it. looks good no matter what you're doing outside all over the delaware valley. little bit cooler along the shore with that wind off the water. but then monday morning waking up to some sunshine but here come the clouds. watch out for showers maybe a few thunderstorms late afternoon and looks like after 3 o'clock on monday. all right. temperatures tomorrow morning somewhat cool. look at that. low 50, maybe even some 40's in the suburbs up towards berks county, the lehigh valley, you guys going to wake up maybe to some jacket weather. into the afternoon nice rebound, upper 70's, maybe some spots do hit 80 degrees. then we bring back the 80's on monday. low and even some mid 80's as you get away from the water. also the increased humidity really starts to feel more

like summer over the next few days. but it is comfortable overnight, mostly clear, 58 for center city, suburbs much cooler than that. low 50's maybe even some 40's. sunday pleasant, mostly sunny 78 degrees for the afternoon high temperature. if you're hitting the shore or delaware beaches cool because of the wind off the water. 70 for the afternoon high. rip current risk is moderate due to a east-northeast wind coming in at 10 to 15 miles per hour. wear the sunblock. that u.v. index is very high, nine out of 10. monday 82, afternoon showers. tuesday 86 chance for a shower or storm. then it gets hot for the second half of next week. mid 80's wednesday with lots of sun. then we push 90 on thursday and friday. even temps at the shore start to warm up to around 80 degrees. >> no complaints here as long as there's sun. keep that sun going. >> you like it dry. >> appreciate it. finally a triple crown winner. it's taken decades.

for glory as they come into the final furlong. in seconds with one-eighth of a mile to go. american pharaoh has got a two length lead. and here it is, the 37 year wait is over. american pharaoh is finally the one. american pharaoh has won the triple crown! >> unbelievable finish. american pharaoh was wire to wire holding off the field and running into the history books. he becomes the first horse to win all three the kentucky derby preakness and belmont since affirm did it in 1978. only 12 horses in history have accomplished this rare feat. well, the phillies are going to look to avoid the sweep tomorrow when they host the giants in the last of the three game seven. this afternoon a slow start doomed the fightans. fast forward to the fourth. phils trailing three-nothing already. gonzalez balked with a man on first and third. that will make it three-one.
