2015. good morning i'm alison alison harmelon in for anne-marie green. the mayor of charleston south carolina, calls it a hate crime. a gunman opens fire in a church. it's an historic african-american church located in downtown charleston. the victims were attending a prayer meeting last night. another victim is hospitalized. brian web has our report. >> reporter: people gathered together in prayer in charleston overnight as authorities searched for a man who police say shot and killed at least nine people at a bible study hours before. >> this is the most unspeakable and heartbreaking tragedy. >> reporter: the shooting happened at the emmanuel ame church in downtown charleston wednesday night, one of the oldest black churches in the nation. the police chief described the attack as a hate crime and says the fbi will be part of the

investigation. >> it is unfathomable that somebody in today's society would walk into a church when people are having a prayer meeting and take their lives. >> reporter: the sus sp ektpect is described as a slebder 21-year-old male with sandy blond hair wearing jeans. it was complicated by a bomb threat. the threat has been called off. >> these people were in church in church and they violated the sanctity of that. >> reporter: the church is led by reverend pinkney who was reportedly in the church at the time. so far authorities haven't released the victim's identities. a charleston newspaper is reporting the survivor reported the gunman sat down for a bit before opening up tiring telling her he would let her live so she could let everyone know what happened.

that's according to the president of charleston's naacp. presidential candidate jeb bush is canceling a trip to charleston because of the shooting. alison. >> brian webb tracking the story. thank you, brian. this morning the remnants of tropical depression bill are making a slow but very wet trek to the east. bill threatens an area of the southern plains, mississippi and ohio valleys with heavy rain and dangerous flooding. heavy rainfall is expected in oklahoma where residents who have been flooded are preparing for more high flood water. a flash flood trapped some teens at a park in san antonio yesterday. they were able to get onto the roof of their car. in central texas a 10-year-old boy was swept away by the high water and is in critical condition. this morning flood watches and warnings are in effect from texas to illinois. eric fisher of our boston station wbz is following the severe weather. >> bill has been bringing

sea. i'm meteorologist eric fisher. a wind swept brush fire southeast of phoenix arizona, has burned two homes and forced the evacuation of a trailer park. the fire started yesterday morning and quickly spread doubling in size almost every hour. the cause of the fire is under investigation. a second new york city college student is in custody this morning in connection with an alleged terror plot. both men are accused of being inspired by isis. kenneth craig says the suspect was arrested after a dramatic conflict with fbi agents. >> reporter: fbi agents showed up at fareen mumuni's home. he was arrested after he allegedly attacked an agent with a large kitchen knife. investigators say he repeatedly attempted to plunge the knife into the torso of an fbi special agent. the agent was wearing body armor

and was not hurt. the fbi says mumuni and college student munther saleh were alleging to carry outer ror attacks. saleh was arrested on saturday. the 20 y50er8d had researched pressure cooker bombs on the internet. he was stopped twice for lightering on the george washington bridge. like mumuni saleh charged at them when he was arrested. he came to their attention after posting support for isis on his twitter account. people in mumuni's neighborhood are on edge. >> it shocks the whole neighborhood. >> reporter: court papers reveal both men admitted to the fbi they are fervent supporters of the islamic terror group. prosecutors say the woman who allegedly helped two murderers escape from a new york prison talked to them about killing her husband. richard matt and david sweat have been missing since june
