roof in north carolina after receiving a tip. police say that he has been a hour inside of the bible study class at emmanuel ame church last night before he opened fire, killing nine people. there is no known motive in that crime but fbi is investigating this as a hate crime. today the president spoke about this tragedy making it a point to talk about gun control. >> once again innocent people were killed in part because someone who can'ted to up flick harm had no trouble getting his hand/a gun. >> reporter: nicki haley joined the church congregation in a prayer vigil. among the six women and three men killed was the church's pastor, the reverend clementa pinckney who was a state senator. he has family in our area. miles from south carolina but effects are being felt in our area tonight parishioners of mother bethel ame church will be arriving here shortly for a prayer vigil scheduled for 7:00 p.m. while that is going on a family member of the slain pastor is getting ready to travel from delaware county to south carolina to be with family. she spoke with "eyewitness news" earlier today. >> god just please don't let it be clementa. >> reporter: patricia hand swipes back tears after learning her cousin reverend clementa pinckney was killed at the emmanuel am e church shooting in charleston. she said her cousin died doing something that he lived for. >> he was in church, having prayer. >> reporter: patricia was born and raised in south carolina but living in chester for several years. she spent time baby-sitting pinckney when he was young. >> he loved to read. he wasn't type that always wanted to go out and play. >> reporter: looking at pictures of the martin luther king junior on her wall

patricia decided not to be angry at shooters targeting african americans. >> we're concerned that he gets the right help that he even asked for forgiveness to what he has done and acknowledge he did do wrong. >> reporter: in society hill, flowers lie on the doorsteps of the mother bethel ame church. philadelphia is where the african methodist episcopal church was founded. pastor mark kelly tyler knew pinckney well and had plans to meet up with him in a few weeks. >> he is just a incredible person. had tremendous upside, you know, great politician but also a very good pastor. >> reporter: they were working on a documentary about how am e church played a role in social justice in the deep south. he was in the film explaining how the church was torn down after slave uprisings in the 1800's. >> there was just an incredible story. this is such a great loss. >> reporter: pinckney leaves behind a wife, two daughters
