this is the "cbs morning news" for friday june 19th 2015. good morning. i'm alison harmelin in for anne-marie green. a bond is scheduled today for 21-year-old dylann roof. he was captured yesterday and waived his rights to skra dix. they say it was motivated by racial hatred. this morning there is disbelief but also anger. craig boswell is in charleston. good morning, craig. >> reporter: alison good morning. absolute disbee left anger, shock. meantime a chilling portrait of an accused shooter is coming to life. dylann roof will be in court today to be arained for the mass shooting inside the ee

emanuel church after being captured. debbie dills who spotted his vehicle on the way to work alerted authorities when she recognized the car and the driver. i got up a little closer and i seen the haircut they were talking about, kind of the bowl looking cut. >> reporter: this image apparently shows roof at the bible study before the shooting. as the memorial continues to fro outside the historic church a portrait of accused shooter dylann roof begins to ee meshlg. his childhood friend joey meek said he reconnected with him a few weeks ago. he said roof told him he wanted to hurt a whole bunch of people and he had a plan. >> he told me the black people

were taking over the world. >> reporter: roof used his birthday money from his parents to buy a gun. investigators found shell casings of the same caliber at the shooting scene. i spoke to the former pastor of the emanuel ame church here. he personally knew of seven of the nine victims. he spoke about their dedication and commitment and the church that was formed to make a statement. he said people here have proved themselves over and over again and they will do so once again. alison, back to you. the men and women of emanuel ame church were open to all in their bible study group. six women and three men ranked in age from 23to 87. marlie hall has more from charleston on the lives that were lost that i hold on knowing

that my mother took her last breath in a place that she loved. >> reporter: the daughter of ethyl lee lance taking solace in the fact that her mother died. helping to keep the historic church clean. lance's cousin sueziesie jackson was the oldest member and sang in the choir. the baseball team at charleston southern coming together in support of their teammate chris singleton. his mother sharonda singleton was a popular speech pa thogt gist and track coach. >> reporter: a tribute to coleman singleton on facebook. singleton. depayne middle on the doctor was making strides to becoming a

minister. the mother of four worked with some of charleston's poorest residents. tywanza sanders was the youngest victim. the 26-year-old earned a business degree last year. on his instagram page he described himself as an artist, poet poet, and businessman. sanders posted a snapchat photo. a black shroud draped over the desk of clementa pinckney. he was emanuel's pastor leading the prayer group that night. all branchs of the library were closed in honor of cynthia hurd. she worked for the library for three decades. why would she have been there on

wednesday night? >> because she was a christian. my mother and father attended that church and we were baptized in that church. it didn't surprise me that on a wednesday night she would be there. >> i'm sorry about this terrible loss. >> reporter: the 200-year-old church's leaders are committed to rebuilding. the family cries and the family moves on. marlie hall charleston south carolina. jeb bush and donald trump canceled campaign visits on thursday out of respect for the victims but the issue of gun control was raised again at the attack attack. presidential candidate ted cruz asked for a moment of silence for the victims but did not raise gun rights. >> there's a sickness in our country.

whipped trees from side to side. hail pelted the windshields of cars. the hail can be seen pilling up on the ground near a tree. parts of the midwest are bracing for heavy downpours for the weekend. some places could get up to 12 inches of rain as the storm tracks to the east coast. in oklahoma a 2-year-old boy died after being swept from his father's arms in the flooding. an elderly woman drowned in her car. downpours flooded streets south of oklahoma city. more than 5,000 children at a church camp were evacuated and sent home as a precaution. camp leaders say water piked up a bus. >> it got swept into the water way and carried into the water. but there were never any people in the bus. >> school buses could be seen parked in several feet of water. cars in low lying areas were also flooded. dry conditions are fueling

wildfires rages across the west. fires are burning across arizona and california. in alaska people left their homes outside of anchorage. themountains were on fire. helicopters dropped water on rugged terrain. heavy black smoke poured from one house as it burned. crews outside modesto battled the claims. the pope's teaching letter on the environment is sparking strong reaction. francis is calling for diseasive action for environmental degragation and global warming. the problem is real and mostly manmade. many catholics and environmentalistenvironment environmentistenvironmental

here's a looked a today's forecast in some cities around the country. caught on camera. three construction workers are hurt when part of a century-old bridge gives way in western pennsylvania. the injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. it's not clear what caused the collapse. both shot 5 under par 65. but it was tiger woods making headlines for all the wrong reasons. woods shot an 80 making both guy after bogey. he finished tied third out of 156 golfers. even hammers beat woods by three

here's another look at this morning's top story. dylann roof who allegedly opened fire at black south carolina church is scheduled to appear before a judge today. roof was captured yesterday in north carolina.phe faces nine counts of murder. a friend says he had been planning the massacre for some time and the race was the motive. the victims were part of a study group at the emanuel ame church. there were six women and three men including three pastors, a high school track coach, a librarian, and a recent college graduate. the shooting at ame isn't the first against the church or congregants. craig boswell has more from charleston. mother e man yell since 1818
