emanuel church after being captured. debbie dills who spotted his vehicle on the way to work alerted authorities when she recognized the car and the driver. i got up a little closer and i seen the haircut they were talking about, kind of the bowl looking cut. >> reporter: this image apparently shows roof at the bible study before the shooting. as the memorial continues to fro outside the historic church a portrait of accused shooter dylann roof begins to ee meshlg. his childhood friend joey meek said he reconnected with him a few weeks ago. he said roof told him he wanted to hurt a whole bunch of people and he had a plan. >> he told me the black people

were taking over the world. >> reporter: roof used his birthday money from his parents to buy a gun. investigators found shell casings of the same caliber at the shooting scene. i spoke to the former pastor of the emanuel ame church here. he personally knew of seven of the nine victims. he spoke about their dedication and commitment and the church that was formed to make a statement. he said people here have proved themselves over and over again and they will do so once again. alison, back to you. the men and women of emanuel ame church were open to all in their bible study group. six women and three men ranked in age from 23to 87. marlie hall has more from charleston on the lives that were lost that i hold on knowing

minister. the mother of four worked with some of charleston's poorest residents. tywanza sanders was the youngest victim. the 26-year-old earned a business degree last year. on his instagram page he described himself as an artist, poet poet, and businessman. sanders posted a snapchat photo. a black shroud draped over the desk of clementa pinckney. he was emanuel's pastor leading the prayer group that night. all branchs of the library were closed in honor of cynthia hurd. she worked for the library for three decades. why would she have been there on

wednesday night? >> because she was a christian. my mother and father attended that church and we were baptized in that church. it didn't surprise me that on a wednesday night she would be there. >> i'm sorry about this terrible loss. >> reporter: the 200-year-old church's leaders are committed to rebuilding. the family cries and the family moves on. marlie hall charleston south carolina. jeb bush and donald trump canceled campaign visits on thursday out of respect for the victims but the issue of gun control was raised again at the attack attack. presidential candidate ted cruz asked for a moment of silence for the victims but did not raise gun rights. >> there's a sickness in our country.
