what is left of tropical depression bill is churning toward us threatening to bring heavy rains this weekend and storm scan3 is tracking its path tonight. good evening, jessica is off. i'm chris may. bill has hammered parts of the south and midwest. in fact at a the rest river threatens to reach the highway that runs over it. we haven't seen floods like this but flood watches have been issued for this area. kathy when we expect the heaviest downpours. >> late tonight, chris that and that will extend into sunday. on storm scan3 we saw a few showers here or there. this is with a front that's sagging to the south but the main event is still well to the south and west of the delaware valley. you saw it right here through cincinnati. you can still see a strong rotation with this that counterclockwise flow, a strong area of low pressure as remnants of bill move through the midwest and head toward

the philadelphia area. now, we will see a few spotty showers and thunderstorms tomorrow ahead of the main event but that flood watch goes into effect saturday evening through sunday for the possibility of flooding. you can see the flood watch everywhere. we're talk about poor drainage flooding, possibility especially sunday morning. we're watching the creeks and streams. river flooding is not expected at this time. we'll watch the low track through the midwest and then toward the region possibly going right up that i-95 corridor with inches of rain being measured. coming up we'll time out heaviest rain, talk about a brief break in the action on father's day that's the good news, not a total washout and then when we'll see a sunny stretch in the seven day. i'll see you later in the broadcast with those details. chris there thank you so much. the grieving continues in charleston, south carolina tonight as the man charged with killing nine people inside of a church there appeared before a judge. this evening a vigil was held for those victims who were shot and killed inside the

emmanuel ame church on wednesday night. earlier in the day dylann roof appeared in court via a closed circuit tv feed. he was ordered held on $1 million bail. also during today's hearing, the judge allowed family members of the victims to address the accused killer. >> you took something very precious away from me. i will never be able to hold her again. but i forgive you. and have mercy on your soul. >> we are the family that love built. we have no room for hating. so we have to forgive you. i pray god on your soul and i also thank god that i won't be around when your judgment day comes. >> this was a crime that was motivated by racial hatred and it is reignited the debate about the confederate flag

which still flies on the grounds of south carolina's state capitol. tonight "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson takes a look at that part of the story. >> we find this flag to be the symbol and the flag of an american terrorist. >> add south carolina's state capitol friday both the state and united states flag went to half-staff to honor the lives of nine people murdered on the grounds of a charleston church. in the same place the confederate flag flew overhead at full staff protected by the state law that makes it untouchable. >> enough is enough. >> reporter: in philadelphia friday, the confederate flag was balled up on the grounds of independence mall shoved into a small metal tub and set on fire with lighter fluid. >> i i'm extremely happy to burn this flag and this flag represented for generations of fear it represents hatred, represents bigotry. >> reporter: the burning friday afternoon was done by a

small group of activists. radio most manuel glen says none of that is the point. >> this flag represents american terrorism. it represents the symbol of an american terrorist. once again the usual southern debate has gone nationwide. is the flag a cultural marker of heritage history or tradition or a symbol of hatred representing murder rape and oppression. >> well, i think it's a visceral reaction. >> reporter: patricia aiden is the president of the african-american museum in philadelphia. she says its placement as a signal of antagonism and death for african-americans has been firming accepted. >> this is anisine stance where we need to put the past in the past. it does nothing to heal this nation and therefore needs to be put aside. >> reporter: south carolina governor nicky haley was asked to address the controversy on tbs this morning. she responded by saying in

part "right now i'm not doing that to the people of my state" saying she wants to focus on the healing first. for the flag to be removed the change would have to go through the state's general assembly. we're live in the sat center tonight, i'm steve patterson cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> not an easy process there. steve, thank you very much. well some local pastors are re-evaluating the safety of their own chumps in the wake of this shooting. security cameras watch over mother bethel ame church in society hill. armed security was on hand during a vigil there last night and when there is no service, the front doors are locked. you have to be buzzed in a side door to get inside. today "eyewitness news" talked to a company that provides armed security for seven local churches. >> while we're on duty, we're stationed strategically throughout the facility and we read people's body language. if they come and they talk to the pastor, we have the right to say well what is it, how may we help you before we take

you to the senior pastor. >> we're told that most security concerns at church involve mental health issues or couples who are dealing with domestic violence. stay with "eyewitness news." we'll have continuing coverage for you of the south carolina church massacre. we'll bring you new updates here on tv and of course online at cbsphilly.com. well, police are investigating the disturbing discovery of a noose inside an atlantic county worker's trash truck. the utilities authority there launched an investigation of the june 3rd incident right away. but worker scott henry says his bosses never called the police until he had the county freeholders get involved. henry tells "eyewitness news" that the disturbing discovery has left him fearing for his life. >> anything could have happened to me. that could have been a direct threat on my life. i feared for my life at one point. my wife didn't want me to come to work. >> it was an unfortunate incident that appalled us and we were going to follow up and get some information. >> i think it's an issue that needs to be taken very

seriously something that you just can't sweep under the rug. >> egg harbor township police now involved. they'll decide whether this incident is a hate crime. tonight we are hearing from a store clerk who fought back during a robbery. he defended himself against a knife wielding suspect with a bigger knife of his only "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt has the story and the video from port richmond. >> reporter: employees inside capitol beer on cumberland street are proud to work there. >> i've been working this restaurant for many years. >> reporter: that's henry lee who sells chinese and japanese food he found himself in trouble when a masked man seen here walked inside the store took out a knife and demanded cash. >> i thought he was joking and then when he jumped on the counter i know that he was serious. >> reporter: very serious. the man continued to make demands and just when he had enough of it, lee grabbed a sharp sushi knife from his counter. lee is at the top of your screen trying to fight the man

off. the man kept yelling. >> i don't want to hurt you. i don't want to hurt anyone. i just want money. >> reporter: lee showed us the video and said he's glad he fought back but he needed backup and called for his chef who just happens to know kung fu. >> when he was a little boy he got training by the kung fu master so he know a lot kung fu. >> reporter: enough to scare the robber off. lee says the robber knew he was on camera but what the robber didn't realize there's not just one camera, we spotted more than 10 inside the store. and henry lee is countering on those 10 cameras to help detectives catch their man. >> that's the first time we got robbed so i never see it before and the area was safe before. i don't know what's going on right now. >> reporter: if you have any information, give police a call. in philadelphia, david spunt cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, the manhunt continues for two convicted killers who escaped an upstate new york prison tonight. a correction officer there has

been put on leave but the officer's name has not been released. earlier dat u.s. marshall service added richard matt and david sweat to its list of the 15 most wanted. they also offered a $50,000 reward for information that leads to their capture. the two used power tools to break out of that prison back on june 6th. a prison worker, joyce mitchell, was charged last week with helping those men escape. new tonight, the rehoboth beach board of commissioners has unanimously rejected a controversial plan that would keep shore renters from using pools or hot tubs. a proposal would have required homeowners to cover and lock their pools and hot tubs when that beach property was rented out. the city's mayor proposed that measure as a way to get a handle on noise complaints. while voting down that measure tonight the boy did vote to require homeowners to register their pools with the city. major players in the gop are in philadelphia this week. the republican leadership

conference continued today at the center city sheraton hotel. many declared candidates are there for the conference but this afternoon it was an undeclared candidate new jersey governor chris christie who addressed the party faithful he has not formally thrown his hat into the ring but many felt a portion of his speech today hinted that an announcement could be coming soon. >> and so if i do this, that's the way i'm going to do it. and some days i'll say things that are certainly going to make you uncomfortable some days i'm going say things that will make you shake your head and say i cannot believe he said that outside that's an inside thought, not an outside thought. >> this conference got under way on thursday. it wraps up tomorrow afternoon. today at the boy scouts philadelphia chapter approved a new policy that will allow gay adults to serve as scout masters. the cradle of liberty council says it has long sought a policy of inclusion. about a month ago the boy scouts of america president robert gates said that the

organization's ban on gay adult scout leaders needed to come to an end. following those remarks local chapters were allowed to adopt their own policies. a pioneer in that cable television who founded comcast, ralph roberts has died. roberts began building his empire in 1963 when he purchased a small cable company in mississippi. he continued to buy up cable companies and ran the philadelphia based giant until he was in his 80's. survived by his wife, suzanne five children and eight grandchildren, ralph roberts was 95. huge fires are burning across the western united states tonight. straight ahead here on "eyewitness news" we'll show you the areas most in danger and take look at the damage that's already been done. plus you've no doubt heard of a face-lift. how about a voice lift? our health reporter stephanie stahl will show us the new trend in vocal rejuvenation. kathy. >> i like it. we are tracking rain on storm

>> firefighters are battling a rash of wildfires across the west tonight. one of the biggest is in in the san bernadino mountains east of los angeles. helicopters are attacking the 11,000-acre fire from above as hundreds of firefighters battle it on the ground. farther north fires are burning near yosemite national park and even in alaska. back in philadelphia street closures are going to make it pretty tough to get around center city tomorrow morning. streets near old pnb building are going to be closed so that a helicopter can remove an old air conditioning unit from atop one south broad street. crews will also install a support system for a new ac unit. streets from 11th to 16th near market will be closed

around city hall from 6:00 in the morning until 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon so make sure to give yourself some extra time. it is going to be tough navigating the city tomorrow. not that it's ever easy. on the cbs3 health watch tonight we have all heard of a face-lift in order to look younger now doctors are offering a voice lift so that we can sound younger. our health reporter stephanie stahl shows us how it works. >> reporter: as we age like everything else, so do our voices. >> i gave you a sample of a voice from a 13-year-old. >> i think it's going to be a good year. >> a 25-year-old. >> how does something like that happen. >> then from an 80-year-old. >> if you to it the same way you have to expect the same results. >> you can immediately pick up who the 80-year-old was. >> reporter: depending on genetics it can be worse for some. >> it's a weakness in the voice, a rattleness, a lack of range. >> reporter: vocal cords are made ofly collagen muscles and fat. >> just like the skin tends to

all those athletes and for the rest of us, we're hoping. >> i know. happy father's day. >> oh, thank you very much. >> yeah. we're hoping for a little bit of a break for dad and i think we're going to have a window of opportunity that it actually will be dry and the sun will pop out even for a few hours. we'll take what we can get at this point. take a look outside center city philadelphia, we do have some clouds, some clearing and some warm muggy conditions. on storm scan3 we are finished with the shower activity this evening. everything that's quite active is farther to the south and the west with the remnants of bill moving toward the ohio valley and this is a very fast mover. it has picked up speed and it is still quite strong. right now look at these numbers. pretty warm in philadelphia, 78. 73 in millville, 62 in the poconos. and 69 degrees in allentown. down the shore warm as well, ocean city a northerly wind 77 degrees. a land breeze in cape may, 75. rehoboth beach delaware, sitting at 73 and the ocean warming up now at 71 degrees. here's the latest on tropical

depression bill moving east-northeast at 18 miles an hour. that is an increase in forward speed from yesterday at this time. winds at 15 miles an hour, so not a lot of wind but a lot of rain with this. it continues to move toward the northeast and here's the shift in the track. by 8 o'clock tomorrow evening it will be just to the east of cincinnati, then continuing to move toward the east and this is by about 8:00 a.m. on sunday and then look where it goes, toward the northeast. see that purple blob right there? that is the heaviest rain lifting to the north and west of philadelphia shifting a little bit farther to the north. so, what does this mean? well, first let's take a look at the timing. between saturday afternoon and saturday night with spotty showers and storms ahead of the main event the remnants of bill. then the remnants move in. the heaviest rain between saturday at 11:00 p.m. and sunday morning. some very heavy downpours especially during the early morning hours. sunday after 7:00 a.m. the rain tapers. some clearing by midday and then some scattered afternoon

thunderstorms possible. future weather really times it out quite nicely. during the day tomorrow, some spotty showers and heavy downpours popping up over the course of the day and the evening here and there. but after 11 o'clock, here we go the remnants of bill move on in. rain heavy at times through the early morning hours and then right through the morning. after seven, 8:00 a.m. we see a break and by noon the sun could come out and it will be heating up. temperatures warming through the 80's and then another round of spotty showers maybe a few downpours and that's between about 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and then we finally dry it out on father's day. so here's a look at what we expect once again. the remnants of bill mainly early sunday morning. tropical downpours. when all is said and done one to 2 inches of rain, locally higher amounts 3-inches, i think that's more likely to the north and west of philadelphia. the heaviest rain in the morning and the possibility of some flooding. we'll continue to keep an eye on the track of that remaining low 'cause that will determine when we have the heaviest

four. the phils went on to lose that series. ryan howard blew out his achilles. another squirrel stole the show tonight. >> uh-oh. the cardinals are in town and there's a squirrel on the net behind home plate. and he has made his way all the way up the netting. now he's on the guide wire atop the netting. i don't know where he's going to go now. oh, my goodness many oh, my goodness. he just judged off the wire. he's now on the roof of the dugout. and the players are scattering in the phillies dugout. >> there's a squirrel loose in the phillies dugout and everybody has run for cover and that poor animal has no idea where to go. >> i haven't seen this much energy at the ballpark since its been awhile. >> we checked in with the phillies and believe it or not they have pest control every game. the squirrel was taken into custody and the charge, being

more entertaining than the phillies. >> oh. >> to the game we go phillippe aumont with the start for the phillies. second inning wasn't kind. he gave up this two run homer to yadier molina. same inning colton wong a two run shot to right. aumont went four innings walked seven batters and gave up six runs. the phillies lost this game 12 to four. meanwhile cole hamels skipped tonight's start. he said yesterday he wasn't feeling great way right hamstring strain. he's expected to make his next start fence the yankees. hamels wants to be smart about his health. >> to me it felt like a cramp. you have to play it by ear and make sure everything is going to come out okay, everything is being read properly from trainers. i just want to make them aware and then make sure we're all on the same page. for this it's more precaution than anything. >> the flyers in the news today in a surprise move new

head coach dave hakstol has decided to retain all of the flyers assistant coaches. still need a goalie coach. today general manager ron hextall was asked what he hopes to accomplish in next week's nhl draft. >> this is a very critical draft for us. i think one of the more critical drafts in years and we got to hit. we have to hit here. we've got -- we do have a lot of picks and we have some holes to fill and we need to keep young players coming, so this is a critical point for us for sure. >> well, yeah, friendly entertainment at the ballpark. >> maybe the flyers can draft a squirrel.
