and a prettying one start to summer this morning storm scan three is showing heavy rain as well as remnants of tropical storm bill making their way across the delaware valley. and, shotgun blasts interrupt a west philadelphia block party sending ten people to the hospital. the youngest of the injured is just 18 months old. we are live with the very latest on that including what investigators believe led to that violence. and services are scheduled to resume in emmanuel am e church in charleston south carolina just days after that deadly massacre. today is sunday june 21st good morning thanks so much for joining us, i'm nicole brewer. happy fathers day to all of the dads out there. it is 6:00 o'clock. we have had a lot rain

overnight. there were a couple trees down than my way in, carol it must have been coming down. >> we had thunderstorms as well but we're on the winding down stage of this storm. it is hot and humid muggy and it will be very hot today as these showers start to end. let me show you outside it is the first day of summer at 12:38 this afternoon and we do have cloud over us at the present time. if you go down to the margate area notice ocean coming in. it looks active, doesn't it. there is a moderate risk of rip current. if you go to the beach make note of that. storm scan three over the last three hours heavier of the rain has moved out and i think this is going to swing on through and then that is it this dry slot is moving in earlier then expected and that will cut down on the rainfall totals even though we did pick up an inch in a number of locations. the heaviest of the heavier rain is over but flood watch continues, until 8:00 o'clock this morning.

reviewing security video and questioning that security guard. also a bar was the scene of the another deadly shooting in strawberry mansion. shortly before 2:00 this morning police say a man and a woman add an altercation inside johnny's bar at 29th and lehigh some one inside that bar shot the man in the chest. homicide detectives are questioning several people, no one is in custody at this point. a west philadelphia block party, turns into chaos as a gunman opens fire on the crowd striking ten people including two children, and a 18 month-old toddler. alexandria hoff is live in west philadelphia a this morning with all of the latest just an awful story alex. >> reporter: absolutely awful, nicole all ten of those people are recovering in local hospitals this morning all said to be in stable condition, but as you mentioned three of those were under the age of 17 and one just a baby. according to police just before 10:00 p.m. an unknown person turned corner to the 4100 block of ogden and fired

shots in the crowd that had been gathered floor for a block party. investigators say the suspect took off either by car or foot with a shotgun. his injuries ranged from people being hit in the leg to in the face. that 11 month-old child was struck in the neck. >> it a appears that everybody here was here for the picnic, and it looked like they ran down the street and hit whoever was in their way. it is a terrible situation. >> reporter: the gun man has not yet been located and police are exactly looking for a motive but they say this could have stemmed from a feud between two groups within of which lives on the 4100 block of ogden. all ten of those people are in stable condition. reporting live in front of the southwest detectives, alexandria hoff for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". members of the emmanuel ame church in south carolina will gather for their weekly sunday worship just days after a gunman shot and killed nine

members of the congregation. bells will toll nine times in honor of those lost in the tragedy. all of this as investigators try to confirm if the manifesto uncovered was written by at alleged gunman. craig boswell has the latest. >> ♪ >> reporter: some came to sing. >> ♪ >> reporter: others placed flowers outside emmanuel ame church in charleston, e va had been here, her sister susan jackson was oldest of the nine people killed during the church massacre wednesday night. for hundreds of the people passing by here it was a chance to begin the healing process. >> what we try to do is to try to start this and it brings us closer together. >> reporter: dill offer roof faces nine counts of murder and weapons charge. authorities are trying to confirm if the manifesto found on line was written by roof. in it the author says he was truly awakened by trayvon martin case and it was obvious that zimmerman was in the

hurd, one of the nine victims murdered after attending a prayer group at emmanuel ame church in charleston. >> i was getting ready to call her. you don't have those thing i need to call cynthia and then that was just absolutely shock, you know when i a saw that. >> reporter: quashi was working with a project her at a local library right before the shooting and pair collaborated often. he said proximity of it all hits home. >> the church is literally a mile from my house so yeah, that is why i pass by it almost every day. i work six blocks from the church. >> reporter: mourning has been difficult. instead of income town quashi was already headed here, the artist premiering a new gallery this weekend at the african-american museum in philadelphia coincidently and fortuitously the work is a at tire in commentary on a american slavery and modern race relations. >> to offer a people a way of looking at things in different

more than two weeks after they escaped prison search for a pair of killers has shifted to an area near new york/pennsylvania border. after an unconfirmed sighting state police are warning residents to stay on the alert. brian web has the very latest. >> reporter: multiple law enforcement agencies have set up a perimeter their friendship, new york near the pennsylvania border after a possible sighting of convicted killers david sweat and richard matt, according to new york state police. it is the third possible sighting of the men in the same general area over the past week. >> we're not going anywhere. our plan toys pursue these men relentlessly and until they are in custody. >> reporter: sweat and matt cut their way out of the clinton correctional facility on june 6th using power tools. prison employee joyce mitchell is behind bars accused of helping them escape. former prison guard says officials had warned mitchell about her relationship with the prisoners. >> yes, she was talked to about getting too close to the

inmates. >> reporter: prison officials also suspended a corrections officer as part of the investigation but didn't release any further details. in new york, brian web for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> prison inmates and fire fighters are teaming up in arizona a to fight a raging brush fire. more than a dozen female inmates from the perryville prison have gone through training and completed same certification programs. eighteen inmates have been on the scene for three days helping arizona fire fighters battle that rural wild fire. would the man say they are treated a as fire fighters, not prisoners when outside on the fire line. >> we're a close bunch. we all want to succeed when we get out of here, you know, a lot of us want to do this when we get out. it is a great opportunity and i'm very grateful for it. >> this is not the first time the crew has been on the front line battling wild fires. their crew gets called out at least seven or eight times a

that means that this system has been moving out faster, thank goodness. 75 degrees right now in philadelphia. it is pretty muggy out there. seventy-two trenton. seventy-three wilmington. everybody in the 70's. poconos 67 degrees. it is very mild every where. and here it starts to pull away. you get the idea. you also get the eye tea we are in the totally through just yet. where it is dry you might be seeing these pull on through but then this looks pretty much like the back edge of this a shower or thunderstorms we will get especially some clearing this afternoon just enough, instability left that it could trigger one of those but otherwise i think the the day is better than maybe what we thought it might be yesterday at this time. now it will be oppressive and it is oppressive with the dew points. they are in the 70's. when they hit that level it is sticky and that is what we keep, all day long here in fact. how much rain did we get? there were isolated amounts of 2 inches and you can see some through new castle county and

some scattered about through south jersey, everybody else is on the order of with an inch or so, so it was a pretty decent soaker but not as heavy, as it could have been and was supposed to have been with the generalized one to two, to 3 inches of rain. now, the morning showers, will be pulling out of here today and then a front goes through here and it doesn't seem to do much for our weather except heat us up. we've got temperatures today at 90 degrees. tomorrow, also at 90 degrees and then maybe tuesday we're at 90 degrees. could this one be our first heat wave. it could be if we get three days of 90 plus. we have a very warm week coming up, for us. let's time this out. computer model says by 11:00 this morning all of the rain we are seeing is out of here. we will get some clearing. do we see showers. this is a look at 5:00 o'clock. shower or thunderstorm not out of the picture as we go through evening hours and then it is out and then tomorrow

looks nice, and hot and then by the time we get to tuesday do we see another shower coming in here? it is possible moving through the day on tuesday. that is of course subject to change but this computer model says yeah, we will see some showers around here on tuesday as well. otherwise, today right around 90 degrees in philadelphia a shore 85. poconos 58 degrees. we've got a maryland rate risk of rip currents. if you are going to the beaches watch out for. that ocean temperature 37 degrees. our wind will be ten to 15 miles an hour coming out of the west eventually. 90 degrees. keep yourselves cool, keep your pets cool, keep dad cool today. 72 degrees partly cloudy with. with a slight shower possible. next three days probably 90 plus and then back in the 80's and then by next saturday, nicole our highs could be in the upper 70's which would be great. >> carol, thank you. on the cbs-3 healthwatch this morning imagine being treated for a devastating

condition, you do not even have. it happened more than might think and our stephanie stahl has the exclusive story of how it happened to a bucks county woman and the impact it has haddon her life. >> what i do every morning is i make myself a nutrition shake. >> reporter: debbie figure a healthy diet was an important part of the living with multiple sclerosis a disorder that strikes the central nervous system. >> it was scary frightening and worrisome. >> reporter: when the 57 year-old was diagnosed with ms her children were stunned and very upset. >> it destroys your world yeah. >> reporter: for 15 years deb hoy lives in bensalem gave herself is daily injections of a powerful drug that she thought was preventing ms symptoms but she and her family lived in fear. there was no telling when debbie might become incapacitated. >> i tried to prepare myself for the worst. >> reporter: but the worst never came, when debbie's

neurologist change the medication and dosage last year she got dizzy and saw a ms specialist said she didn't have it. she had been miss diagnosis. >> i'm like devastated. i mean i'm overjoyed don't get me wrong that i don't have it but i'm so heart broken that i put my children through this. >> reporter: it has happened to others. researchers in the journal neurology says misdiagnosed of ms is common and has significant consequences for patient care. doctor larisa is a neurologist at cooper university hospital. she didn't treat debbie but isn't surprised. how could something like this happen, how does somebody get misdiagnosed with ms? >> because many other conditions can give the mri image that is we see in multiple sclerosis. >> reporter: these white matter lesions can indicate ms but they are seen with a number of other problems, including migraines. >> this person has headaches. >> right. >> reporter: debbie didn't have ms but she now has weak and painful tendons a possible

side effect of the ms medications. >> this is as far as i can bring it. >> reporter: she had shoulder surgery in february and before that an operation on her knee, bad tendons there too. >> i'm absolutely terrified at this point because i don't know what kind of damage that medicine did to my system for all of those years and now i'm scared. >> reporter: debbie want to warn others and working with a attorney hoist considering legal action against the first doctor. >> debbie went for almost all of these years with daily injections of toxic medication that can lead to many other problems. >> i'm angry with now we're worrying about the other aspect of taking this medication all these years. >> reporter: experts say ms can be trick toy accurately diagnosis, and it usually involves imaging and a series of other tests all that have to be analyzed and interpreted by a neurologist. i'm stephanie stahl cbs-3 "eyewitness news".

this morning we're talking about a valedictorian controversy in new jersey where for the first time lodei will not feature a commencement address. jessica brewer has that story. >> reporter: devon worked hard to get grades that make him the leader of the class get him into harvard invited to a

honorary breakfast with his principal. >> they talk about how proud they are of me and one days later they said would i no longer give me speech. >> reporter: he was told school was overhauling tradition, devon thinks it is personal. he admits he had been suspended before for disrespecting a teacher. >> i'm a very out spoken person and they might have been afraid i would use it as a chance to insight something or get back at them. >> reporter: lauren is a fellow national honor society student and said yep, he is a loud mouth. >> he is either standing up for the whole class or specific students. >> reporter: classmates protested in devon's defense. they said administrators threatened to punish protesters. and then, devon says he tried to plead his case with his guidance counselor. >> i told her would i like to resolve this peacefully. she walked out. i don't know if she took it as a threat, ultimatum. >> reporter: because of that perceived threat school administration officials told devon he was in the welcomed back to classes at lodi until

he had a mental healthy valuation. >> i was criticized. >> reporter: he has a note to prove it. next day at school he says he got suspended. he cannot even walk in graduation. >> well, i went from the first who would be giving the commencement speech to someone who had to receive their diploma in the mail. >> reporter: is there more than one side to this story but the school is not talking. state education leaders say devon could appeal before a judge. devon's mom seems resigned an immigrant who worked seven days a week because devon's dad died just nine months ago. she said that she's proud of her son. >> i did the american thing to do i had a position, i had a protest and i tried my best to get my voice heard. >> reporter: now his words are being heard beyond lodi. >> world of chance and a world of change. >> reporter: devon's harvard admission could be in jeopardy. student are told when they are

new jersey's supreme court has spoken but teachers and school employees still fear for their futures. because rather than solving the pension crisis the court says politicians can continue to ignore it. that's just wrong. teachers and school employees have paid billions into their pensions. but the state has failed. the legislature can fix what governor christie has broken - ... before it ends up costing billions more. it's time for fiscal responsibility. fund the pensions now.

shots into a crowd that had been out there celebrating for a block party. now investigators say this suspect either took off by car or on foot with a shotgun. they are still trying to piece together exactly what happened in the moments before. >> we don't believe the shooter was here at any point from what we know at this point but there may be a possibility he may have been here and return back with the gun but we still to have work through that. >> reporter: gunman has still in the been located. as for an exact motive police are still looking into that but it could have stem from a feud ongoing between two groups, one of which lives on the block again, all of those victims are in stable condition, at this hour. nicole, now back to you. >> alex, thanks for the update. now meanwhile a manifesto has surface that had could give investigators a better pictures of the gunman accused in the charleston church massacre. investigators found a 2500 word racist rant on the web site. they are trying to confirm if it was written by the us peck dylann roof.

suspect, who shot and killed a new orleans police officer on saturday. officer darryl holloway was shot and killed transporting three three-year old travis boys to jail. he freed his hand from the cuffs, grabbed a gun and shot holloway. officer holloway leaves behind three children. we do have an update for you on a intentional hit and run that led to a philadelphia woman losing her leg. the rick tim beatrice spence is, in the hospital. police charged precious coleman after she allegedly ran over expense expense in the car this april all because of a love triangle dispute. police say on that same day spence house caught fire when her mother ran out of the house to check on her daughter leaving food on the stoves. welshing tanker truck fire caused major problems on the pennsylvania turnpike, this weekend. truck was carrying 2700 gallons of home heating oil when it caught fire near the bend salem interchange. crews had to use foam to clean up that mess.

sixty-eight in the poconos. we have 73 degrees in wildwood and atlantic city. seventy-four in millville this morning. storm scan three you can see why it looks so soggy on the ocean city boardwalk because some of the heaviest rain, it is not all that heavy but it is coming down right along cape may county, at this point. the rest of it is starting to pull out of here, we will get a little reenforcing shot of some wet weather but as i mentioned at the top of the show the flood watch for the entire area has been canceled which is terrific. we have 72 at the airport in philadelphia, i'm sorry this is dew point practically the same as the temperature that is why i am confused but when i saw oppressive up here, those word are referring to the dew point which are oppressive when they get in the 07's, it is extremely mild, to say the very least and extremely sticky. now, our doppler estimates of the rainfall totals that we pick up over the last 24

hours, note that is we do have some isolated amounts of about 3 inches and this would be southern new castle county but we've also got some of the heavier rain where we are finding the yellow and that is scattered around, generally about an inch of rain that we have pick up out of this not as much as we could have because the dry slot moved in earlier and that cut off those rainfall totals but still at an inch plus over much of the area that was a good amount of rain. now our temperatures today will be getting well, into the 80's and we could hit that 90-degree mark. let's say upper 80's but if you see 90, don't be surprised. then tomorrow we will sianni be in the 90's and we can also be there on tuesday. this may be if we hit 90 degrees today maybe our first heat wave, as we continue with these temperatures above 90 degrees. now as far as getting all of this precipitation out of here computer model says it is on its way out. let get it out of here and by

11:00 o'clock this morning we could find sunshine breaking out. it will be humid after all that moisture. not totally out of the woods picking up a shower or thunderstorm as we go through later on this afternoon but then tomorrow looks like it will be a dry day. tuesday, should be mostly dry but we again cannot totally rule out picking up a shower, even on tuesday. so we will continue to monitor that a as that system gets its way out of here. otherwise we're looking at temperatures of 90 degrees. some clearing skies. maybe that thunderstorm coming back later this afternoon, in the middle 80's, shore poconos and the same story in those locations. but it is a hot day for dad. so do your best for him and of course, do your best for your pets, keep them as cool as you are and tonight 72 degrees. partly cloud which that slight shower chance, over the next couple of days, and it is just sticky humid around here with temperatures in the lower 90's but been then by next saturday nicole, it could be in the upper 70's which will be a refreshing change.
