>> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news"." >> a west philadelphia neighborhood is on edge after gunmen open fire on a block party. they shot 10 people including three children. good evening everyone, i'm natasha brown. thanks for joining us. those gunmen are still on the loose tonight as the victims were being treated in the hospital. "eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers has new

information from mantua. >> reporter: a quiet block and a heavy police presence sunday afternoon in mantua as patrol cars made constant runs through a neighborhood peppered with recent violence. late saturday night a block party along the 4100 block of ogden was wrapping up when gun shots rang out: two men walked up to the party and one fired a shot gun spraying bird shot into the crowd. 10 people were shot including a 12-year-old boy and an 11-year-old boy and an 18 month old girl. all the victims are in stable condition. police say the suspect may have been involved in a fight on this block last week and was looking to retaliate. that possible motive is still preliminary for now. however, at police continue to work to identify the two suspects involved. >> i just seen the people running and getting in the cars and it's sad because children got hit too so that's something that -- that bothered me, you know, 'cause i am about to be a full-time

father and just being around it, you know, just seeing and hearing it is very devastating, though. >> reporter: and at this point police say they're not exactly sure whether these two suspects fled on foot or by car. >> all right, that was matt rivers reporting from mantua tonight. also developing at this hour service has just been restored on septa's media elwyn line after a train collided with a car on brookhaven road. officials say the car was hit on a crossing at about 2:45. a man in his 90's was taken to the hospital but there's no word on his condition. 37 people on the train were not injured. turning to our weather it's officially summer and it certainly feels like it outside. a live look now over center city philadelphia where it's been a hot and muggy father's day. meteorologist justin drabick is in our weather center with our first look at this father's day. very humid father's day forecast. justin. >> that's right, natasha, get

used to these conditions. that's going to be the trend over the next few days. summer has officially arrived. it arrived at 12:38 this afternoon. today is our longest hours of daylight, just over 15 hours and after this days get shorter slowly and slowly as we move through the summer season. high temperatures today 91 degrees. average high 85 so well above that. everybody else very warm today. upper 80's even close to 90 degrees at the atlantic city airport and right now we're dealing with temperatures in the mid and upper 80's, still some spots reaching 90 this hour. nice and quiet on storm scan3. a couple showers across the mountains of central pennsylvania. that's a weak cold front. it will cross our region tonight. most of these showers should break up but we can't rule out an isolated shower. it will be a warm evening. there you go. 90's still this hour at the philadelphia international airport. 86 in allentown. westerly breeze along the shore. folks down the jersey shore delaware beaches feeling the warmth as well. when you factor in the humidity this is wait still

feels outside right now, low and "eyewitness news" meteorologist, david murphy mid lowand mid eyewitness news. at the shore breezy warm day 86 degrees a lost sunshine up in the poconos as well. 82 for the high. not a bad start to the week but it will be hot and humid. we'll talk about our next storm chances in the seven-day forecast in a few more minutes. natasha, back to you. >> justin thank you so much. coming together in the wake of tragedy. less than a week now after a gunman walked into a charleston church killing nine people services resumed there this morning. as cbs correspondent marlie hall shows us worshipers showed their strength. >> ♪ >> reporter: every pew overflowed at emanuel ame church in charleston. a black cloth draped reverend clementa's chair. the pastor was one of nine victims gunned down during bible study at the church wednesday night.

church bells rang throughout charleston to honor what many are calling the mother emanuel nine. worshipers stood outside in the blazing sun and offered prayers for the victims' families and forgiveness tort suspect. >> it's been rough. we've some of us been down right angry. but through it all god has sustained us. >> reporter: for many who attend this 200 year old historic church, sunday's service provided some much needed healing. >> we should not feel any malice or discontent with what has happened but pray for this person who obviously needs prayer. >> reporter: parishioners were reminded that more has to be done to stand up against racism in america. >> the blood of the mother emanuel nine requires us to work and build not only

now, the search does continues today along the new york-pennsylvania border for two escaped killers. police say there are credible sightings now of richard matt and david sweat in allegany county. that's more than 300 miles southwest of the maximum security prison they broke out of more than two weeks ago. the u.s. marshals service has now added matt and sweat to its 15 most wanted list and a $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to either man's capture. at least 200 people meantime have been forced out of their homes in bucks county because of a gas leak. the leak was discovered late this morning at an apartment complex on the 1300 block of veterans highway in levittown. crews are trying to find the source of that leak right now once much. once it is fixed residents will be allowed back inside and luckily no one has been injured. a delegation from philadelphia leaves for a visit to the vatican today. they'll be participating in planning meetings for pope francis' trip to philadelphia

coming up in september. "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson is live at philadelphia international airport. he's got the latest. steve. >> reporter: natasha, the mayor made it perfectly clear this afternoon, the planning for the pope's visit in september is absolutely enormous. the mayor's flight left just about 10 minutes ago. we caught up with mayor michael nutter about why this last trip and final planning session is so important to the city of philadelphia. >> i believe some of the most intense 48 hours that this city has experienced in awhile. >> reporter: mayor michael nutter says when you're planning one of the largest events in the history of philadelphia, you may want to take a few meetings face to face. >> this is a huge event for the city of philadelphia. we will get it right. we want it to be virtually perfect and that's our focus. >> reporter: the mayor city officials religious leaders planners all joining the delegation traveling to rome sunday. the four day trip all business. a final series of planning sessions before pope francis

travels to philadelphia for the world meeting of families in late september. >> association we'll be meeting with pontiff counsel for the family our partner in the vatican the group that plans his trips. >> reporter: the mayor says logistics organization presentation all crucial but number one above all security, just listen to how many agencies are involved. >> this is essentially a secret service event. that's of course the federal government. philadelphia police department, state police accept at a police, vatican police italian government police and the swiss guard who are the personal protects of pope francis. >> reporter: all with one goal. when the world's attention is on philly everything goes smoothly. >> it's a big event we want to prepare well for it. >> reporter: and another little tidbit of information. i'm told the delegation is not scheduled to meet with pope francis himself. of course as you've heard this is not a trip for sight seeing or exchanging pleasantries.

>> back now on "eyewitness news" with a dramatic rescue in camden county. police say a driver careened into the cooper river at about 8 o'clock this morning on south park drive in collingswood. rescuers were able to pull the father of two from the water. they were alerted to this accident by a man who lives nearby and actually saw the whole thing unfold from inside his home. >> i was having my coffee. just looking outside of the window and i saw that car stopping on the other side of the street right in front of my house. and the driver start having a

seizure and i, you know, wandered to go there and help him when all of a sudden he step on the accelerator and ran right into the river. >> police say the man was taken to the hospital. there is no word tonight on his condition. and a very special gift for a local veteran decades in the making. "eyewitness news" was in hatfield as 89-year-old james wendell was given his world two medals. he was presented the victory medal along with the american campaign and asiatic pacific campaign medal by his daughters. his kids wanted to surprise him with the medal for father's day. wenzell drew some laughs after receiving the honor. >> they don't mean much to me. i never wore them when i got out. i don't -- i'm sorry honey . >> [laughter] i just never bothered going after them.

with the tropic of cancer at 23.5 degrees north latitude so that's why we see our most amount of daylight today just over 15 hours and then certainly in spring and summer -- or fall the eke quinn knocks sun lines up with the equator and the winter solstice december 21st at the trop kick of capricorn. all right, this week here's what to expect. average high 85 degrees. we'll peak on tuesday well into the mid 90's for highs but by the end of the week we start to cool back down for where we should be this time of year, actually below average by the end of the week. if you're looking for cooler weather wait until friday even next weekend. here's what's happening right now. not much. clear skies over the delaware valley but there is a cold front across central pennsylvania right now. , see some broken showers maybe even a few thunderstorms. a lot of these will break up as they move over the mountains. through the early evening hours can't rule out a stray shower or two in some spots. i think most areas stay dry. once that front passes, the humidity levels drop a little

bit but it doesn't bring in cool air. still stays very warm for monday. right now still mid and upper 80's to around be 90 degrees. there's some cooler air towards state college buffalo. that's really not getting into the into the delaware valley. tomorrow still hot. dewpoint temperatures still well into the upper 60's. that tells us a very humid air mass still remains in place. the front comes through tomorrow. still in the low 90's. lots of sunshine. tuesday that's the hottest day. most humid. temperatures in the mid 90's. it may feel a lot hotter than that when you factor in the humidity and watch out for late day showers and storms tuesday. another front comes through wednesday knocks the humidity levels back down, we're into the 80's for the highs. let's time things out. not much happening this evening. maybe a stray shower. tomorrow looks good through the day. a lot of sunshine. tuesday starts off nice. even early afternoon. late in the day tuesday you get into the evening hours you'll see a line of stronger showers and thunderstorms that try to push into the your

region. monday topping off about 90 degrees in the warm spots and even hotter on tuesday. look at that. widespread mid 90's across the delaware valley. so here's your forecast for tonight. again maybe a shower early. otherwise a few clouds, 73. tomorrow mostly sunny hot a high of around 91 degrees. your shore forecast even still an off shore wind tomorrow will bring those temperatures into the mid 80's so a warm day along the coast. ocean water at 70. here's the extend forecast. a couple days in the 90's. we pull back into the 80's for the middle of the week with dry conditions. by the end of the week upper 70's to around 80's with showers friday and sunday. kind of a slick week ahead. >> just an introduction to summer then a break and we get right back to it. >> you got it. >> thanks, justin. lesley has got sports highlights. >> keeping track and the last time the phillies starter won a game was way back on may 23rd. that was 25 games ago. phillies starter adam morgan was making his major league debut and due to injuries he had not won a professional game since august of 2013. why not today. his whole family on hand for
