. what you're seeing across the street at that house is the roof of the car wash. it crashed into that house. >> severe weather strike in the midwest. powerful thunderstorms and at least one tornado destroying homes near chicago, as the dangerous weather moves to the east. it's time to move the flag from the capitol grounds. >> facing pressure in the wake of last week's hate field shooting at a charleston church south carolina governor nikki haley says the confederate flag no longer has place at the state house. rapper diddy is in a confrontation, reported with one of his son's football coaches. this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, june 23rd, 2015.

good morning thanks for joining us. i'm in no anne-marie green. this morning the threat for severe weather stretches from the plains to new england. late last night, a tornado destroyed several homes near chicago. at least seven people were injured in northern illinois. cold city a small town south of chicago, was hard-hit. several homes and buildings were destroyed and roads were blocked by fallen trees and power lines and people trapped in rubble. a damaging tornado hit the area 70 miles to the west. another tornado hit in lee county. there was lots of flooding and trees came down on several homes. >> walking out to my -- my grandmother's trailer, the whole entire front frame from the tree hitting it caved down on my grandmother's car and there is no roof now on her trailer. >> up to 20,000 customers were without power. recovery efforts are under way in michigan after powerful

winds, including a possible tornado and heavy rains, caused substantial damage yesterday. several homes were damaged in portland, michigan and three people were trapped in a store, but no one was seriously injured. in california, firefighters are battling a fire south of lake tahoe. the fire started friday sparked by lightning and burned 15 square miles but no buildings have been damaged. evacuation orders have been issued for some campgrounds. the fire is about 10% contained. the governor of south carolina says that the state legislature doesn't take action to remove the confederate flag from the statehouse grounds this summer, she will force issues. it comes in the aftermath of the charleston church massacre and set up a wave of action elsewhere elsewhere. walmart is removing merchandise from its stores that features the confederate flag. mark albert is in washington. good morning, mark. >> reporter: good morning,

alison. as early as a week ago, the confederate flag was entrenched in many places. it's each an option on the license plates in nine states. after 21-year-old dylann roof opened fire allegedly inside emanuel ame church on last thursday night. support for the flag quickly crumbled. >> it's time to move the flag from the capitol grounds. >> reporter: south carolina governor nikki haley is calling for state lawmakers to move quickly on legislation that would remove the confederate flag from the state property. doug brannen plans to introduce a bill that would do just that. >> i've been in the house five years. i should have filed that bill five years ago. but the time is now. . >> take it down! >> reporter: while the move could cost him re-election, many with presidential aspirations rushed to embrace haley's call.

hillary clinton and bernie sanders joined scott walker and jeb bush and rick perry in tweeting their support. senator lindsey graham who had expressed a different opinion just days before publicly reversed course. >> put it in a museum. move forward. >> reporter: some are vowing to fight the move. >> if we are going to remove all of these symbols of the civil war? are we going to take down the -- because it reminds of us segregation. >> reporter:? the flag was 34506ed from the top of the statehouse dome 15 years ago to a confederate memorial out front. it can only be lowered by a vote by the stit legislature. obama believes the flag should be taken down and put in a museum where it belongs. the president will be in charleston on friday to deliver the eulogy for the church pastor killed in that shooting who was also a state senator. >> mark albert in washington,

thank you, mark. dylann roof charged with the murders appeared in a flag. manifesto says it appears the 21-year-old acted alone when he shot and killed nine people last wednesday. roof says he was inspired by a racist hate group, the council of conservative citizens. the group says roof is not a member. president obama says the charleston shooting just proves this country has a long way to go regarding race relations and this morning, some are questioning his provocative epitaj. >> racism we are not cured of it. and it's not just a matter of it not be polite to say nigger in public. that is not the measure of whether racism still exists or not. it's not just a matter of -- we have to -- societyies don't overnight completely erase

a water jug on the table that typically don't use in that camp and, apparently, a jar of peanut butter. >> the items recovered included boots and bloody socks. the local newspaper says it is a camp leaved by several police officers. a company that bottles spring water has a voluntary recall after recovering e. coli. they were bottled from june 10th to 18th in two pennsylvania plants. the company says no illnesses have been reported. the u.s. is apparently killed an isis operative suspected in the 2012 attack on the u.s. diplomatic post in benghazi, libya. authorities say ali awni al har zi was killed last week. four americans were killed in benghazi including ambassador chris stevens. a man is in custody.

justin sullivan appeared in federal court monday. they say he wanted to obtain a rifle. the u.s. is pledging military support to a nato rapid reaction force aimed at protecting europe from russian aggression and isis. ashton carterer says they will provide weapons and commandos. he said the u.s. is quote, deeply committed to defending europe and backing ukraine. >> the united states is providing training and military equipment to ukraine. we haven't changed our prospective to weaponry in ukraine. an interview you'll see only

his assistant says horner was piloting the small plane when it went down killing him. horner won two oscars for his work on he composed the music to dozens of movies including "braveheart." horner was 61 years old. rapper diddy is free on bond. he alleged little attacked a football coach where his son is a member of the team. entourage, sean combs is not used top. police cars tag him to the central jail in los angeles. campus police say diddy was arrested for assaulting one of ucla's football coaches in the team's weight room allegedly using a kettle bell as a weapon in the confrontation. according to the website, tmz obtained this footage of diddy at a ucla practice, the rapper

took issue of the coach's treatment of his team, a defensive back for the bruins. combs has played in seven games for ucla but his father is a fixture on the sidelines and practices veteran los angeles sports reporter says he doesn't think the incident will affect the junior standing with the coaching staff but it may change how his teammates view him. >> the coaches at ucla is very beloved. if teammates think a player's parents is getting to one of the coaches, the players will pretty much back the coach. >> reporter: ucla coach jim mora jr. released a statement reading this is an unfortunate incident for all parties involved. while ucbd continues to review this matter, we will let the legal process run its course and refrain from further comment at this time. the coach who was allegedly targeted is no stranger to controversy himself. tmz reports it was strength and conditioning coach sal alosi who resigned from the new york jets in 2011 after he tripped an opposing player during a game.

his body was found on monday. police in texas said he was shot by a woman who then killed herself. she was the mother of hamilton's 14 14-month-old chill. there is new evidence that pete rose gambled on games when he was an active player and something he has reportedly denied. espn reports it obtained a notebook that rose bet on cincinnati games. he admits he was on the reds when managing the team. rose is permanently banned from baseball in 1989 for gambling. ability pujols homered twice but a safety squeeze by daniel roberto and that scored the go-ahead run as the l.a. angels beat the astros 4-3. the angels move within 4 1/2 games of first place of houston in the a.l. west. chicago cubs rookie williams hit two home runs off clayton kershaw of the dodgers. his ninth and ten homers of the season and first multihomer game

psychiatrist. >> reporter: he has the note to prove it. next day at school he says he got suspended. he can't even walk in graduation. >> i went from the person who would be giving the commencement speech to someone who has to receive their diploma in the mail. >> reporter: there is more than one side to this story but the school is not talking. state education leaders say devan could appeal before a judge. devan's mom seems resigned an immigrant who works seven days a week because devan's dad died seven months ago. >> i did the american thing to do. i had a petition i had a protest and i tried my best to get my voice heard. >> reporter: now his words are being heard beyond lodi. >> it's a world of chance and a world of change. >> reporter: devan's harvard administration could be in jeopardy. students are told when they are accepted their admission could be revoked if their behavior calls into question. we reached out to harvard but
