season. temperatures will be in the 90s, will feel more like 100 degrees. >> oh, and that heat is paving the way for stormy afternoon. we are at higher than usual risk for thunderstorms that means, wind, hail, even possibly tornados, too. >> here we go. lots to talk about today. here's katie right now in the weather center. >> yes guys, absolutely right. this is summer day that's throws everything at us that it possibly consideration right? you have heat. you have humidity. you have the threat for severe thunderstorms, that could truly bring everything but the kitchen sink with us. we start things off by taking you right back out to the view of storm scan, nasty stuff going on here, with some severe thunderstorms currently firing up across northwestern pennsylvania right across that new york state border here. and i want to talk about what's going on with this lightning. there are hundreds of strikes that have shown up within say the last half hour or so, when these really start today ignite. so, this is sort after sign of things to come for us. these aren't necessarily making a bee line, for our area, but eventually, this afternoon, and early evening we are going to see similar situations unfold here.

meantime, as of 11:00 a.m., heat advisory takes effect for heat index values that spike to near or actually to the century mark, only for the counties shaded in the orange here, but you are talking thousands of people affected by there is urban corridor of i95. so with the heat advisory, talking low to mid 90s on the they are mom term, heat index values to up 100 make sure to drink plenty of water if you have to be out in. >> this best thing to do really is seek out the air-conditioning, if it starts to bother you just avoid the worse of the strenuous activity at the height of the day. if you have got outdoor plans you have got to get n you have got to take your jog during the day do it now before it gets too bad out there. eventually though, these temperatures again, back to the 90's, feeling the heat, feeling the humidity, and just in time for evening rush hour by hour here in toward philadelphia. we expect those nazi storms to ignite. ukee, over to you. >> thanks so. the morning rush starting to kick in now, starting to see heavy volume on i95 headed southbound near cottman avenue. that's the look right there on the right side of your

earlier this morning. and we were at north american college where they made that big announcement. and this is some big names. these are big names people will be very excited but this. what we now know during the world meeting of families, when the pope is there we will have andre a bow chilly, have juanes, and also the philadelphia orchestra perform withing them. it will be quite a concert on the parkway as you can imagine, as they made that announcement this morning, the world meeting of families, executive director, was telling us just how excited they are to really have an international line up. because do you have remember, the world meeting of families means the world is coming to philadelphia. we're going have people from all over, who speak all languages, so they are really trying appeal to a massive audience. but, in addition to that, and this is what's so great as well, we will have our own philadelphia orchestra as the cornerstone, the house band if you will during this entire event. they'll also be playing for the papal mass. very, very special. mayor nutter had a very unique

way of saying it. take a listen. >> i love jay-z and beyonce and of course phillies own house bands the roots. but here is something quite magical about the idea, the thought, the visual, pope francis being on stage in our city, with andre a bow chilly, juanes, philadelphia orchestra, all at the same time. >> all coming to philadelphia to perform during the festival of families, which is part of the world meeting of families, and, archbishop chaput and donna ferrell both told me they expect more people to confirm, so we will have more artists to tell you about in the coming weeks. just trying to work out all of the schedules. you know, a loft these musicians have schedules that go months and months in the future. they're trying to work through. that will that's what's happening with the delegation.

children are hit with bullet. on saturday, ten people were caught in the line of fire in mantua. yesterday, shooting was in kensington. children playing in the fire hydrant area had to run inside to dodge bullets. "eyewitness news" had exclusive video of the incident justin finch joins us now at police headquarters with the very lateness this investigation. justin? >> ukee, good morning. violent start to the summer here in philadelphia, as you mention, two shootings, so far this summer, with dozen wounded, children among that number, as well. and we do have exclusive surveillance video of that shooting on monday afternoon in kensington, we're about to show it to you now. but warning before you watch for some it, may be difficult to watch. >> police and evidence markers spread over another mass shooting scene monday afternoon. this time, on the 700 block of east hilton street, in kensington. >> well, i don't know who did that man. who ever did that is crazy. >> neighbors lamenting another shooting, where kids are

caught in the crossfire. and here, a look at the moments before, during and after bullet blasted the block. look as children playing in water at a hydrant are quickly whisk away by alert adults. seconds later, two men appear to walk into the gunfire, one falls, he is hit. >> we heard something. we thought it was fireworks. when we come over here, we see blood. >> i was in my truck driving northbound on g and i saw the people got shot. >> orlando garcia says he then called police. >> i told them they better hurry up couple of people on the grounds. >> the shooter got away. but the shotgun used was found, seven people shot, three of them children. >> just makes absolutely no sense, but i think again it just reinforces when we tell some of these guys just don't care. they just do not care. and, any time, any place, irrespective of who may be on the street. >> monday shooting echos a block party saturday night

ten victims total, three children. the shooter also fled and appears to have used a shotgun as well. >> and there is a $20,000 reward foreign foe leading to the capture and conviction of the shooter in that mantua shooting, as for those seven victims in kensington, there are two men in critical condition, both in their 20's, with gunshots to their neck and chest. and also, remaining four, three adults, and two children rather, five, they're having graze wounds recovering from at this moment, and they are looking for police, at this point black male suspect about five-seven with stocky build between 25 and 30 years old last seen wearing red white tank, perhaps with a black handkerchief covering his face. live at police headquarters, justin finch. >> justin, thank you. new this morning police are investigating a shooting in the fairhill neighborhood of philadelphia. it happened around 12:30 this morning, in the 800 block of lehigh avenue. police found a man with a

gunshot wound to the upper thigh. he's been taken to the hospital. no word on any suspect at this time. >> philadelphia police are searching for the driver in a hit-and-run accident that left a man in critical condition in temple hospital. it happened around 9:30, monday night, at the intersection of sixth and erie in the city's hunting park section. the victim was riding a bike, when he was struck. police say the driver fled the scene, leaving that vehicle behind. >> well, right now the confederate flag flies on grounds of south carolina state capitol. many say the flag represents hate and should be taken down. call to remove the flag comes in the aftermath of the charleston church massacre, crime motivated by racial hate tells. mark albert has that story. >> it is time to move the flag from the capitol grounds. >> south carolina governor nicky hail is he calling for state law makers to move quickly on legislation, that would remove the confederate flag from state property. republican state representative, doug brandon says he plans to introduce a bill, that would do just that.

>> i've been in the house five years. i should have filed that bill five years ago. but the time is now. >> while brandon acknowledges dollars the move could cost him re election, many with presidential aspirations rush to embrace governor haley's call. senator lindsey gram, who had expressed a different opinion just days before, publicly reversed course. >> put it in a museum, move forward. >> the flag can only be lowered, with a vote by the state legislature. mark albert, for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". and, wal-mart has announce that it will stop selling merchandise bearing the image of the confederate battle flag. country's largest retailer made that announcement yesterday following the shooting in charleston. wal-mart. com currently sells that flag, along with several apparel items featuring the flag's design like t-shirts and belt buckles. statement from the company said the items will be removed from both stores and the website. well, the severe weather

new jersey's supreme court has spoken but teachers and school employees still fear for their futures. because rather than solving the pension crisis the court says politicians can continue to ignore it. that's just wrong. teachers and school employees have paid billions into their pensions. but the state has failed. the legislature can fix what governor christie has broken - ... before it ends up costing billions more. it's time for fiscal responsibility. fund the pensions now.

>> northeastern illinois gets hit, rounds of strong storms pounded the quad city area in northeastern illinois, and no serious injuries were reported. a tornado warning was issued, but none were confirmed to have touchdown. one woman described what it felt like as that storm hit her house. >> you feel total pressure in your head, like your head will explode. then my house was shaking and everything wag -- was breaking, coy hear everything breaking upstairs. i thought it was window. but it was all coming out of my kitchen cabinet, kitchen cub around everything on my shelves, everything throughout the house. >> several hundred homes are still without power this morning, flood warning remains in effect for many areas. and, kate, is that same system headed our way now will affect us this afternoon? >> expecting to see pretty nasty thunderstorms ourselves in the delaware vale, too. we walk you through that threat.

>> very significant heat today, fully expect to make it heatwave today. , right now pretty tame few clouds out there but we take you out toward new york state and pennsylvania look at the storms firing up. in toward even punxsutawney, pennsylvania so, this is real just sign of things to eventually come for our area, but, we do sit in a slightly higher risk zone, as opposed to what the storm prediction sent her us in yesterday for this same time period. in other words, weaver enhanced risk. that's basically the third level and it is a tear of five levels we have with the storm categorization here. >> clog err to the send, on the actual timing, and with it will get in here. heavy downpours gusty wind, small hail, look to be your primary issues, frequent lightning, though, we have to worry about, too. if you hear thunder, this is the day to head inside. >> low risk but i can't rule it out.

>> good morning, definately looking ahead to hot, steamy and stormy day here in the delaware valley. starting things off with just sunshine, that's what is going to be sort of the lynch pin here for us, as long as we get plenty of sunshine, which we expect, we heat one no problems to the mid 90s make it a heatwave for one thing but also really bill up that heat, plus moisture, in our atmosphere. nasty storms already errupting here. look at all of that lightning and the drenching downpours across northwestern pa. looks like it is headed our way, doesn't it? when i show you what happens

>> good morning, heat advisory in effect we mark the first heatwave of the year. then check out storm scan3 there, severe storms, really could see little bit of everything today from downpours, to wind and hail, even katie you're saying possible tornado? >> yes. >> this is really afternoon. mornings are just hot? >> right now it is quiet. all calm, all collected, heat advisory not even in effect yet. still warm outside. but not oppressive at the moment. >> just you wait though. >> exactly time is eventually going to usher in all of these different features of the day. so, active day. it is a hot summer day. you basically have everything that a typical summer day would be able to bring your way, right? i mean, here is storm scan once again very, very strong thunderstorms errupting currently with frequent lightning, hundreds of lightning strikes within the last hour or so, as these storms errupted and exceptionally heavy downpours with them, as well. lungly, this batch, not expected to really affect our

robinson, face several charges. investigators say the two officers knocked g riviera from his scooter then began to beat him before placing him under arrest. the encounter captured on surveillance camera. riviera has maintained his innocence. >> president obama will travel to charleston, on friday, to remember the victims of the church massacre. the president will deliver the eulogy for the church's slain pastor, state senator clementa pinckney. in the wake of the mass shooting the president says the count have i not cured of racism. during a interview he used unusually strong language to make his point. >> it is not just a matter of it not being polite to say beep in public. that's not the measure of whether racism still exists or not. it is not just a matter of overt discrimination. >> the white house says the president was making the point that there is more work to be done to wipe out symbols of racism. south carolina is taking up that debate as it relate to the confederate flag.

"eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo joins just our satellite center to tell you more about it, jan good morning. >> good morning, this appeals hearing starts at 9:30 tomorrow. but it is not in court. it is actually at nfl headquarters in new york city, and tom brady and his attorneys won't be appealing to a judge, they are actually appealing to the man who authorized this punishment in the first place. nfl commissioner, roger goodel >> expect a much different entrance and reception for tom brady, as he shows up at nfl headquarters today. the star quarterback is fight to go have his four game suspension overturned. >> this is the date that's been circled. this is all that really matters right now for the patriots. >> all along, the new england patriots and brady have denied donating footballs during the afc championship against the indianapolis colts. >> i didn't, you know, have

any, you know, i didn't alter the ball in anyway. >> starting today brady's attorney will argue several point. one, the evidence collected during the league's investigation doesn't show brady violated any nfl rules. two, the punishment is too harsh. three, league executive, troy vincent, doesn't have the authority to hand down the punishment. the players association will argue only commissioner roger goodel has the power to discipline players. >> i have great admiration and respect for tom brady but the rules have to be enforced on an uniform basis and they apply to everybody in the league. >> the patriots fined $1 million, and dock pair of draft picks following the investigation, the team's owner has declared to appeal the penalties meantime, today's appeals will be heard by commissioner goodel, man who authorized discipline in the first place. >> it will be weeks before this ruling is actually handed down. if the suspension is not overturned there is appeal could indeed ends up in court.
