6:17 pm
long time. number of lightening strikes about a thousand with this particular line of storms. to be able to see this type of a line moving through at this time of the day is pretty amazing because the real estate that it covers is significant. you're talking about most of the philadelphia area and the commuter traffic in this area 95 heading down through baltimore, washington, 295 right now in cherry hill, ram manywood seeing potential for some severe weather through ram manywood. this is 73 south toward marlton, green tree, this is heading toward promenade if anyone is shopping there give them a call say stay in don't get on the road because you will have have some problems. fox hallow woods, gibbs boro, voorhees, this is the area of concern, tornado warning in effect until 6:30. we're talking about damaging wind torrential rain, frequent lightening and possibility of hail, but hail would be least of our problems
6:18 pm
right now. it would be the wind and the flooding rain, with this particular storm. gloucester, even turnersville, seeing very heavy rain, rain rates here in excess of the 2 inches an hour easily. pitman also glaus glassboro you can see when we see that flashing color when we are indicating intense rain and reflectivity on our doppler radar. steve can you put on our storm reports and see if anything is new you from the weather center because these storms have a history of damaging wind with multiple trees down and some power outages as well associated with them. here is the line crossing over philadelphia and river moving into the warning area, of south jersey, through chester county these storms had a history of multiple trees down and you can see a funnel included in blue bell reported at 5:00 with these storms previously. lets go to south jersey and zoom in on that purple return over here, an area of concern right there near mount laurel,
6:19 pm
new jersey. we have a potential for severe storms. mount laurel slow acres eaves bureau, medford road through marlton this area lets look at this rain rate this is hainesport mount laurel road a very heavily traveled road, church road, marie tree road, this is 17 inches an hour which would be amazing. i have never even seen that before but just significant rain falling right now, with this cell. this is an area of concern in the tornado warning area we're talking about possibility of damaging wind, just prolific rain and a lot of lightening associated with this. cloud to cloud but more significantly cloud to ground lightening. tornado warning will continue for next 15 minutes. if it is allowed to expire and weaken as it moves toward interior south jersey remember it is still a severe thunderstorm. so that warning will continue for the next 15 minutes the storm will continue to move east ward it will be in vineland by 6:28. it will be in millville by
6:20 pm
6:37. cresswood village by 7:02. toms river as a strong thunderstorm i don't expect as severe by then by 7:17. area of south jersey we are concerned about is that western part of the burlington county, and that is in the warning. the tornado warning in effect for western burlington, gloucester, and also, for central parts of camden county. now i think threat is moving more into burlington county, and through mount laurel, and through evesham and into marlton. the tornado warning has been just canceled. all right. good news, chris. wow. you can see, right here, this is where we have a severe then are storm warning for parts of the burlington, camden, and this moving once again east at about 50 miles an hour. at that speed it will continue toward the shore this is an area of severe thunderstorm
6:21 pm
warning. i will step out because it is all of south jersey, camden, cumberland, gloucester and salem so it does exclude the shore it is a severe then are storm warning for all of those counties wow until 7:30 this evening. indicate ago this this is going to stick together pretty good as a strong to severe thunderstorm, heading toward the shore. the people affected 1.1 million people impacted by this cell. so lets track it, steve, lets go back. now a severe thunderstorm impacting multiple counties. we have significant rain associated with it and potential for damaging wind. we have already seen flooding, we know it has been taken down trees in some neighborhoods moving east at 50 miles an hour vineland by 6:33 and millville by 6:38 and gala way township by 7:04 and egg harbor by 7:08. it is a severe thunderstorm. it is a series of severe thunderstorms, excuse me,
6:22 pm
extending right here from camden county and gloucester county, moving east. very quickly in washington township right now, a lot of lightening associated with this, hundreds of lightening strikes and you can see as it moves east it is a fast mover. this was a little bit earlier this afternoon look at how fast it is moving in so it is a sheer momentum of the storm and wind associated with this storm has a double impact as it moves towards the east so it is plowing in, and it is bringing in some very heavy rain a along with it. it will move east, south east, but the flooding concern is going to be the big concern as well. if you have anyone traveling on the expressway, garden state parkway down the shore heading home, they are going to drive right into this severe thunderstorm. you can't miss it because it extend about four counties through south jersey and all of this is moving towards the
6:23 pm
shore points. severe thunderstorm warning in effect for next hour as this hour is strong enough to stay together and move towards the east. you can also see the flooding potential, we do have a flood advisory in effect now and that is going to go until 10:15 because of the heavy rain, associated with this. so it includes cherry till gloucester vineland, washington township for counties of at plant being, burlington camden and gloucester and on the pennsylvania side you can see southeastern pennsylvania and it also includes delaware, the reason, so much rain, has already fallen and few more showers will be moving in. so we're not just talking about a few inches of rain, those rain rates we saw were 5 inches an hour, 10 inches an hour 15 inches an hour so quick four or 5 inches could have fallen in one of these cells and we will definitely track that and have more on that tonight on "eyewitness news" at 11:00 after we assess the damage from this line of storms. we have the heat and humidity, those heat indexes were up to a hundred.
6:24 pm
cold front moving in with much dryer air and then that cold front, created the lift, to create these strong to severe thunderstorm. this is it, it ace a line of severe thunderstorm that is plowing towards the east, you cannot even see the towns because of the lightening nearly 1,000 lightening strikes. steve if we lift lightening lets take a look at precipitation, where you see red, that is extremely heavy rain but right here, right through central parts of the camden county that purple dot is indicating some intense rain intense wind, this is right along route 30, you can see in lindenwald, good friend that lives there precipitation rate five and a half inches an hour. that is not going to sit there for an hour but that gives you an idea how fast that rain is falling, visibility i'm sure at zero, so if you have any plans to be near lindenwald, ashland, crsonon road, 73,
6:25 pm
take that to the shore and also the 42 freeway intense heavy rain continues to fall, and it is going to continue to move towards the east, at about 50 miles an hour. some wind damage associated with this, and this whole area continuing to bend like a giant bow and many times indicating wind damage when you see that on doppler radar but this is annex stream area we are seeing this afternoon. we add 3-d view you can see the thunderstorms it is not just one or two it is a complex of towering thunderstorms that extend, thousands of feet in the atmosphere and we have energy and power to be able to create this type of intense a and wind abe in rain. that is very late es from the weather center we will continue to track these intense severe storms, we will take a short break and we will be right back.
