♪ now at 11:00 o'clock, the big mess. more than 24 hours after the storm many trees remain where they fell last night and hundreds of thousands are still without power. well, good evening i'm chris may. jessica is on assignment in rome rome. most of the delaware valley felt the impact of this storm in one way or another from dodging downed trees to power outages even problems that affected the commute. it was a tough day for many, and

tonight things remain tough. we kick off our team three coverage with "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt. he's live in brookhaven, delaware county, where people are growing weary tonight. david. >> reporter: chris they really are this is one of the only buildings in town with power. thanks to a generator not far from where i'm standing but as you mentioned mentioned people are frustrateed this is a shelter behind me normally it's the borough hall but people are inside tonight wondering about that power. delaware county officials say this is the worst storm to hit the area in decades. >> we are concerned as far as the public's well-being. >> reporter: delaware county officials insist help is on the way. it just may take a few more days to get things back to normal. >> right now, we have approximately 50,000 people that are without electricity. electricity is hopefully to be restored sometime during friday. >> reporter: the brookhaven borough hall is now a shelter to

help the thousands in the area without power. >> we have nowhere else to go, so it's nice we have somewhere that we can spend time together. >> reporter: cleanup crews were out early doing everything possible to get rid of trees blocking roads and in some cases on top of homes. >> my whole life i've been in hurricanes at the shore and never experienced something like this. >> in chester height this tree at least 200 years old fell and split this home in two. >> this is probably the worst. it was a couple close to it but not like this. >> reporter: ed grew up in this home down the street. but now lives next door. he spent most of his day picking picking up tree limbs. >> nobody got hurt. i mean nobody got hurt. that's the big deal in my mine. >> reporter: his neighbor nicole anton lives there now. she was inside with her three little girls when the storm hit. luckily the trees fell away from her home. >> we have two broken fences, no power, fridge full of food that has gone to waste.

and three unhappy little girls. >> reporter: that's the case around delaware county because kids are out of school right now for summer an lot of people over the past few years chris have canceled their land lines to only use cell phones they can't charge their cell phones that's something they can do here at this shelter. we'll be having breakfast served here in the morning three meals a day thistle is open 24 hours a day for people without power but people certainly hoping that power comes on as soon as possible. we're live in brookhaven david spunt cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> we know it means at a lot to those people. david, thank you very much. the storm did cause significant damage in the frankford section of philadelphia. a few close calls for neighbors there who had trees and live wires crash on their homes. fortunately though none of those falling trees caused any injuries. there are still lots of people without power tonight here are the latest numbers. 152,000 atlantic city electric customers remain in the dark tonight. peco is now down to 89,000

outages. 21,000pse and g customers and 7,000 delmarva customers also without power tonight. here's an incredible scene take a look at this from new jersey. this is a home on democrat road in gibbstown, gloucester county. it stands untouched even though huge trees fell all around it. we talked to this homeowner today. he says he's very lucky no one there was hurt. our team coverage continues now in new jersey with "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocky live in turnersville where the damage diana is really widespread. >> it is chris. people are getting frustrated. still about 150,000 people in this immediate area without power. and they're being told it could be saturday or even sunday before the lights come back on. we're along the black horse pike where this entire four-mile stretch of the road is without traffic lights tonight. businesses remain closed, and trees are uprooted everywhere

you look. the cleanup has started. >> i don't think anybody realized how bad this storm was. >> reporter: bob finnegan at his son's graduation when the storm hit and had to navigate down wires trees to make it home to find one tree down in his front yard narrowly missing the house. now his family is looking at another three days without power power. >> can't get a hold of anybody or whatever it's like we're working on it. >> four major arteries throughout the township are shut down and trees and power lines blocking the streets. much like greentree road covered in downed wires and hanging utility poles leaving the traffic piling up on back streets. >> this was quite a shock to the township and we're devastated in three different areas that really really badly. the trees are encased in wires. and they're blocking our major roads. >> reporter: tree companies can't get to work until the lines have been cleared by ac electric and for many here, their response has been slow. >> we could have probably opened

a couple of roads today but we weren't able to do to get that cooperation from the atlantic electric. >> we've handle add little more than 200 various types of emergencies. >> reporter: throughout gloucester county businesses remain closed without power forcing many to drive to neighbors towns for gas food and hot cup of coffee. eric has been waiting in this growing gas line for 15 minutes. >> at least another 15 maybe 30 minutes we got a couple of cars ahead of us and who knows how low they are on gas. >> reporter: now we did not see a lot of power crews out tonight as we were driving around so we called atlantic city electric for comment. they said it took them about 24 hours to assess the situation in this immediate area and they had 20 main power lines knock out which supply power to thousands of people at a time they are working to get those up and running immediately. they have also recruited help from new england north jersey

and wads. >> live in turnersville tonight diana rocco cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> diana, thank you for that. patco will operate on a normal schedule for tomorrow morning's rush hour. the storms knock out power along the high speed line halting service last night and through noontime today. meantime septa service does remain suspended tonight on the media elwyn line. also, of there's no service on the norristown high speed line between radnor and the norristown transportation center center. as we deal with the aftermath of this storm there are more storms on the way. meteorologist kathy orr is here now with more on that. kathy? >> right now as we look at storm scan3, we can see some high clouds moving our way that is associated with a warm front. it doesn't look like much now but complex of some storms developing over iowa an area of low pressure is going to move eastward and it's going to be putting us in a more active pattern over the next couple of days. now, as these storms continue to move eastward we'll see the clouds increase tomorrow and a chance of some scattered showers and thunderstorms.

but with this, it is going to be more localized. severe threat mainly through central and southern delaware that is where we have the slight risk of severe weather. some gusty winds some small hail some downpours and even through northern parts of delaware and south jersey this is a marginal risk. so there is a risk of some gusty thunderstorms but a better risk as you head toward the south. we'll talk more about this and the potential for a wet weekend coming up with that seven day forecast. >> all right, kathy, thank you very much. pope francis welcomed delegation of philadelphia leaders to the vatican today. and he let them know in his own way he's excited to come here in september. "eyewitness news" anchor jessica dean was there for it all. >> reporter: good evening from rome. this was a very big day for the philadelphia delegation. this was a day that so many of them have been looking forward to since they arrived here in italy. not only did they get to sit in the front rows at the papal audience here at the vatican they also got to meet pope francis himself.

it was a moment members of the philadelphia delegation hoped would happen. and after pope francis' address was complete on wednesday the delegation hopes became reality they were face to face with the holy father. >> he was genuinely excited that see us and he is so warm, so engaging. >> he was also a bit playful holding up three fingers to signify just three months until he arrives in philadelphia. >> his acknowledgment of -- smiling big three fingers up, three months ago i'll be in philadelphia. i mean that's great feeling. >> delegation was still talking about their morning when they arrived for a lunch promoting philadelphia to the international press. >> we have something very very special in philadelphia. we need to promote it. we we need to talk to anybody who will listen to tell them philadelphia is open for business, philadelphia is a great place to live, come on and join us. >> reporter: certainly a big part of this day promoting the city of philadelphia. they see this as a unique opportunity to introduce the

side, i'm jim donovan. well chopper three in the air today catching a glimpse of one of the tall ships making its way to the delaware river waterfront. that ship will be part of the fun at the tall ships philadelphia and camden festival which gets underway tomorrow. members of the public can tour and ride these ships which come from all corners of the globe. and joining the ships during that four-day event will be the world's largest rubber duck which is 61 feet tall. look forward to that. philadelphia is getting some more national recognition for its food tonightth this has nothing to do with cheesesteak. "eyewitness news" reporter natasha brown stopped by a pizzeria in fishtown that one magazine calls the best in the country. >> reporter: long before the doors opened, the lines spiraled around the building. pizza lovers anxious to try the pie deemed the best pizza in america. >> just tastes awesome. they make it really well. he does what he wants in terms

of business. he doesn't have a phone. you have to come here and obey by his rules to eat his pizza. >> reporter: what did you think when it was call the best pizza in america. >> i was willing to wait in line line. i'm guessing it must be true. >> reporter: bone appetite magazine named pizzeria in fishtown the best pizza in the country. he is steamed honor that brought this familiarly from moorestown new jersey. >> terrence rose was one of the first in line. >> very delicious and it's a little pricey but we'll going to find out if it's worth it. >> owner joe with two swamped to talk with lines forming and only a limited am of pizzas available available. >> the one thing about makeing only 40 pizzas a day they go very quickly. especially now. today pizzeria told out in less than an hour. >> i was standing in line for good half an hour, an hour they just told out right in front of me. two people ahead of me. i was going to try the best pizza in the country. maybe tomorrow. >> some will wait hours to pick up a coveted pizza.

tomorrow the same but we do run the slight risk of severe weather especially south and east of philadelphia. we'll talk about that but first take look at this. down the shore open for business much different evening. atlantic city the steal pier looking really good. but we can be in for a wet weekend from the city to the shore. want to update you on our wind damage in gloucester county. it was a macro burst not a tornado that tour through west deptford and also east greenwich last night. now, it was thunderstorm wind damage but with this macro burst you have a down draft from a thunderstorm and it's at least about 2.5 miles wide. wind speeds with this were 85 miles an hour with straight line thunderstorm winds and they last between five and 20 minutes. so the macro burst that strong down draft created those straight line winds that really wreaked havoc in south jersey and of course we talk about those bow echoes that line of wind damage that created a lot

of trouble throughout the delaware valley last night. now as we pick up it is looking like it's going to be pretty dry overnight tonight and through tomorrow most of us seeing dry conditions. it's 78 in philadelphia. 66 in millville. 60 in the poconos and 67 in reading as we look closer in our suburbs quakertown 64, and pottstown a pleasant night. overnight low temperature will be in the lower 60s. during the day tomorrow, we will watch this warm front move toward us we'll have morning sun, afternoon clouds and a chance of a shower or thunderstorm especially south and east of philadelphia during the afternoon. friday some showers as this area of low pressure is just to our south. and then a better chance of wet weather over the weekend both saturday and unfortunately on sunday. now, overnight mainly clear and comfortable the low 65. during the day tomorrow, sun increasing clouds a chance of a shower in the city. the high temperature around 85. on the exclusive "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast friday 80, saturday and sunday some wet weather saturday some
