pretty gross and very expensive. stack after stack after cakes pastries you name it all headed for dumpster at the seven star diner. >> all of the food went bad. we had to throw it out in the garbage. >> reporter: the own are shows us empty refrigerators and freezers as employees threw away $150,000 worth of food because of the power outage. to make matters worst tuesday's powerful thunderstorm knocked out electricity while dinner was in the middle of service and there is no way to wash middle of dishes. >> i'm so upset, i have been here this morning and just came back again. i feel like crying. >> reporter: further down delsea drive, the butcher shop also lost tens of thousands of dollars worth of products and sales. >> we are an "s" ising the damage right now. we have had to throw away, practically all of our inventory. >> reporter: problem with restoring power is 80-mile per hour wind knocked if not thousands of trees down in

south jersey and much of the tea brings are tangled in power lines. by midday expert tree cutters from the new jersey forest fire service were out with the electric company but officialness washington township were frustrated with atlantic city electric over delays. as time goes by with no electricity, frustrations are growing every where and expenses are mounting. >> all of those items in there we hand pack ourselves, you know and it is all labor intensive and it is just it hurts. >> reporter: that is one of the worst parts about this is even when this power comes back on the restaurants and these shops they don't just reopen for business, they have to make the product, they have to get things ready. this could be a problem that last several days once power is restored. live from washington township i'm cleve bryan cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> tough go there cleve thanks very much. at the height of the storm more than a hundred thousand homes were dark in delaware county. crews are making progress there but are still without power tonight.

earlier, and you can see folks on the promenade behind me and still we're seeing people hanging out on the beach. it has been a long winter accounts a long spring and hey, we're here, we don't mind the clouds. on storm scan three we have a few spotty showers and they are moving toward the shore but just a sprinkle here and there. it is cloudy here in sea isle city temperatures at 81 degrees. more numerous showers out to the west and they will take time to get here. we have a slight risk of severe weather really through sussex county delaware, georgetown southward and eastern shore of maryland. slight risk means there could be heavy downpours and spotty storms gusty wind and even the risk of hail. for tonight showers and steady rain, quarter to half inch late. highest amount in philadelphia and that is best chance of seeing some thunder as well. here's our first forecast 7:00 o'clock 77 in philadelphia. seventy-four down the shore. by 9:00 still in the 70's. by 11:00 p.m. left over showers from the city to the shore with temperatures around

72 in the city, down the shore 71. back here live we are seeing a little bit of the sea breeze. it will be cooler over weekend and unfortunately we will see some rain, and wind, we will talk more about that in detail later in the broadcast chris. >> thanks very much. there is news in campaign 2016 today new jersey governor chris christie has reportedly decided he will run for president. governor will announce his intention toss run for republican nomination on tuesday according to the associated press. governor is expect to make it official during a rally at his old high school in essex county. we will have a full report on governor's plans coming up on "eyewitness news" at 6:00. u.s. supreme court held up nationwide subsidies for the affordable care act also known as obama a care. in the six-three decision they reject a challenge to tax credits in that law you that helped make insurance affordable to close to 9 million people. earlier today the president praised today's decision.

>> after more than 50 votes in congress to repeal or weaken this law, after a presidential election based in part on preserving or repealing this law, after multiple challenges to this law before the supreme court, the affordable care act is here to stay. >> chief justice john roberts wrote the pennsylvania majority opinion in that case. we will have more on this story coming up on "eyewitness news" 59:30. breaking with tradition of the catholic church, pope francis makes his opinion on divorce very clear today. he said some married couples are better off apart n his weekly address the pope called the separation of some marriages quote morally necessary, especially to protect a spouse or children from violence or neglect. despite pope's remarks the catholic church does not officially recognize divorce. well to day a delegation in philadelphia leaders wrapped up their visit to the vatican where they have laid groundwork for the pope's visit to our city three months

"eyewitness news" anchor jessica dean has been there for all of this and she joins us live from rome to tell us all bit jessica? >> reporter: good evening, to you chris from rome, today the final take for this delegation. so we know they have been very busy over past few days. today they were especially focused on security, not just for pope francis but also for the people who are coming to see him. pope fran cyst loved to be on the move, and as close to people as possible. it is exciting for those who want to see him but provides a challenge for those working to protect him and that is why police chief inspector joe sullivan came here alone to talk to local law enforcement. >> our plans have to be very flexible, very fluid and give us the ability to be change on a dime. >> on thursday, sullivan and others with the delegation met with the mayor of the rome,

and vatican security chief general dominic guillen i. >> they were able to offer us welcomed advice to give us the idea of what special considerations we should plan for. >> reporter: also in on this planning philadelphia office of emergency management director samantha phillips who say every day city issues will be magnified by this city visit. >> for example a water main event near the event, how do we facilitate water department getting into isolate a main so that it is not disruptive to this incredible opportunity that the city has. >> reporter: phillips told me that the city has a specific responsibility. >> it is the city's obligation to care for the attendees and making sure they can access the event that they do have water. >> reporter: i'm told that this is the largest event that the secret service which is lead in all of the security, has ever over seen, bigger than any inauguration, so that gives you the magnitude and chris, if there is one thing i

pick up on for sure by listening and watching all of this it is that we really don't have anything to compare this too in philadelphia in terms of magnitude. it is just that big. we can try to wrap our heads around it in what we have experienced already but we won't have experienced anything like it. >> i think we will have to see it feel it in person and we will three months from now. you mentioned mayor of rome in your story jessica, he actually has a philadelphia connection. >> reporter: indeed, he does you wouldn't believe this, it is sheer coincidence the mayor of rome, used to live in philadelphia. how about that. they presented him with the book, he was looking through pictures pointing to places that he knew and the mayor of philadelphia michael nutter told me it had has been great because when they talk about logistics and security concerns he knows exactly the intersections, he remembers them. mayor of the rome told me he was able to ride a bike in philadelphia, it is harder here in rome because hills were not his favorite friend. >> one less person to explain

tall ships festival is underway on the delaware river, chopper three overhead the majestic vessels pulled in giving those on the philadelphia and camden waterfronts a suburb view. if you make it out to the festival you can do more than just look you can tour these ships, they will have food, drinks, great music lots of things to do. "eyewitness news" reporter matt river is aboard the coastguard ship the eag with the more now matt. >> reporter: good afternoon chris. we are on board the coastguard cutter, an eagle and that is one of 13 ships that will be

taking part in the festival at penns landing. this is quite a tall ship, as, probably at least 50 to 60 feet high with a couple different masts and 300 feet long. we have video of us actually cruising up the delaware. we got on the smaller boat and went south on the delaware to join this ship and rode aboard it coming into penns landing here. as i mentioned one of the 13 different ships that will be taking part in the festival that is set to last all weekend long. we have pulled into penns landing here, within the last hour or so and they are just now letting visitors on board this ship. you can walk around, you can tour the ship, this is an active coastguard ship. this is where lots of different cadets come through and spend the summer learning, training, on board. the other ships however almost all of them are replicas or very old ships that are in longer being used for their original purpose. there is something different about the festival, being held on both sides of the waterfront in both

philadelphia and camden and you ask organizers, that was all by design. >> a lot of things going on inside the ships. there is containers, there is, live bands there is great food, so there is a lot going on between two shorelines and it is a unique way to bring the camden side and philadelphia side of the river together. >> reporter: there you can see a huge american flag on board this coastguard ship, one quick fun fact for you before we send it back to the studio. this ship was not actually built by americans but it was built by germans before world war two but upon american's victory in world war two this ship was claim by u.s. as part of the war reparations deal, one of the all of the fun facts that you can learn heading down to pens landing this weekend. would i recommend it. whether the weather throughout the weekend will hold up and you will have a great time. for now live from penns landing, cbs-3 "eyewitness

high temperatures in the 80's a, philadelphia 83. ac airport 83. trenton and allentown 18 degrees. still 81 in philadelphia. poconos at 72, and dover 75. down the shore here in sea isle city temperature is 81. ocean city 79. ocean water temperature is decent at 72 degrees. now here we go, we will watch this low pressure move toward us during the day tomorrow giving us a chance of some rain. afternoon we will see some breaks. moving on over the weekend we will see rain and wind on saturday and by sunday lingering morning showers and then we will try to dry it out. let look at our forecast, overnight tonight we will see the showers heavy at times especially to the south low of 68. tomorrow temperature is 79 degrees. so improving after morning rain. on your three day forecast, we have 79 on friday, 74 with rain and wind on saturday and then sunday looking a little bit better at 76 degrees.

up here. clean up efforts are still underway but residents are staying positive and they are lending a helping hand. it is a story about neighbors helping neighbors tuesday night's storm knock out power to thousands of residents in delaware county but they got relief from an unusual location. >> this is what good neighbors do and we're trying to create a really good neighborhood here in chester. >> reporter: the philadelphia union open ppl park to residents so they could shower get a hot meal, charge their cell phones and recharge themselves. >> it was just great. >> reporter: clean up crews and emergency responders came to take a short break. >> we have a lot of people around us, a lot of good workers, and we are here to do the job. >> reporter: delaware county is under a state of emergency. crews have been working around the clock to restore power and clear fallen trees and

says. only thing in america that you can counties actual law. >> supreme court and these justices have said you cannot look at four words out of context. that we have a responsibility to look at the law as a whole. >> reporter: chief justice john roberts wrote the majority opinion saying congress passed the affordable care act to improve health insurance markets not to destroy them. >> i think john roberts rewrote the law to give the president and administration what he wanted. >> reporter: justice scalea agreed saying we should start calling this scotus care. republicans vowed to repeal the law in congress. craig boswell for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". a second prison employee is facing charges in connection with the escape of those two convicted killers in upstate new york. prison guard gene palmer was arrested last night as he went before a judge today. authorities say he delivered tools inside frozen meat, to inmate david sweat and richard matt who are still on the run

be intimidating but it is worth taking a closer look. they have a lot to offer. labor department report that had there were 8.3 million stem jobs last year, accounting for 6.2 percent of total u.s. employment. average wage for all stem occupations is over $85,500. that is near liz double average for all occupations of about 47,000. it varies by geography. here in the philadelphia area software developers for apple earns $94,690 above the national average of 90,000. additionally wages for specific stem cells can differ in different industries. computer systems analyst who work in motor vehicle body and trail are manufacturing might make $60,000 a year. while those working in mining make twice that amount a. so, go ahead and enter the stem job pool, but do so, armed with information. i'm jill schlesinger for cbs-3

new york city department of consumer affairs is investigating whole food for allegedly over charging customers by over stating weight of prepackage product. elaine keyano has more on how the company is fighting back. >> reporter: across the country whole foods is known for its organic and wholesome products but in new york city the department of consumer affairs says customers are paying more for less in one of the worst cases of over charging they have ever seen. >> we're not just talking about a few violations but we're talking about literally what amounts to thousands of violations over numerous stores throughout the new york city area. >> reporter: last fall inspectors tested 80 different types of prepackaged products at eight locations and found all had inaccurate weights and labels often resulting in over charges. for instance an inspection of chicken tenders found customers on average which has over paid by more than four

collars. markups ranged from 80 cents for package of pecan for a 15-dollar over charge for coconut a shrimp. >> probably, ten to $20,000 over the last few years and it should not be getting the quality and quantity that is just disheartening. >> reporter: whole food calls allegations an over reach. >> occasionally there will be human error but there is no systematic effort to over charge or up charge customers. >> reporter: the company says that it is trying trying to address concerns walking officials through auditing and training programs. >> we're not going to be coerced in paying outrageous demand and we are not going to be coerced by them coming out in the press and making these issues public when they are not accurate issues in the first place report report this isn't the first time whole foods has been accused of cheating customers. last year chain was forced to pay $800,000 in california, for similar violations. >> if a customer add any

good evening i'm chris may, jessica dean is live in rome, we will see her in a few moments but first lets go down the shore kathy orr tracking rain live from sea isle city now, kathy? >> reporter: clouds rolled in this afternoon chris and now we have a sea breeze, the skies are getting dark and we know rain is coming this evening. you can see it is a quiet day here in sea isle, on the beaches but cloud haven't kept the crowds away from town. take a look at storm scan three and i will show you the rain. we have spotty showers even in cape may county, interior south jersey and camden county. this is just plane old showers. no storms, no severe weather here in northern and western suburbs. a few sprinkles. but thinks moving east ward. severe threat tonight is really localized, it is in central and southern delaware really focused near georgetown and laurel, in sussex county delaware. under the slight risk means a chance of downpours gusty wind and small hail and scattered storms. so for tonight some
