certainly not what we want to see. good evening i'm chris may, jessica dean is live in rome, we will see her in a few moments but first lets go down the shore kathy orr tracking rain live from sea isle city now, kathy? >> reporter: clouds rolled in this afternoon chris and now we have a sea breeze, the skies are getting dark and we know rain is coming this evening. you can see it is a quiet day here in sea isle, on the beaches but cloud haven't kept the crowds away from town. take a look at storm scan three and i will show you the rain. we have spotty showers even in cape may county, interior south jersey and camden county. this is just plane old showers. no storms, no severe weather here in northern and western suburbs. a few sprinkles. but thinks moving east ward. severe threat tonight is really localized, it is in central and southern delaware really focused near georgetown and laurel, in sussex county delaware. under the slight risk means a chance of downpours gusty wind and small hail and scattered storms. so for tonight some showers

it will turn to steady rain overnight and half inch of rain possible and some spots highest amounts to the south and even possibility of the few rumbles of thunder. through this evening from philadelphia to the shore temperatures will be falling through the 70's, we will see spotty showers by 9:00 o'clock. by 11:00, 71 in the city or i should say 71 in the city, 72 down the shore. we expect rain to pick up in intensity by late night hours. that is very latest from sea isle. we are more significant weather coming our way this weekend with rain and wind but will it be a wash out? i will show you details from the city to the shore later in the broadcast. chris, for now back to you. well lingering widespread power outages have left refrigerators and freezers filled with spoiled food that has got to be thrown out and that is costing homeowners and small businesses a small fortune. "eyewitness news" new jersey reporter cleve bryan is live from washington township with more cleve. >> reporter: a very expensive power outage, seven star diner here is one of the places that

when you walk in the front door you see the delicious the displays of pastries. well today they pulled the trigger, and throw everything out. the mood of the seven star diner could be summed up in three ward. >> devastating, horrible and heart breaking. >> reporter: no power for 48 hours, meaning dozens of employees are home with empty pockets and those who came to work are throwing out as much as $150,000 worth of food. >> i'm so upset about it. i was here until 3:30 this morning and just came back again. i felt like crying. >> reporter: not only are employees throwing food out in the dumpsters but some has to be refrigerated until it can go in the trash. they have had to rent expensive refrigerated trucks for their garbage. >> nobody can give us a straight answer when we will have power back. >> reporter: those frustrations with the continued power outage echoed at washington township fire headquarters. expert tree cutters from the new jersey forest fire service

clean autopsy head in hard hit delaware county, the residents there are trying to stay positive and lend a helping hand. in chester the philadelphia union today opened ppl park to residents so they could shower, get a hot meal, charge they're electric tronics and recharge themselves. there is also a 24 hour shelter opened in brookhaven tonight as delaware county remains under a state of emergency. well, power crews are working hard to get services restored to tens of thousands of homes. earlier today we spotted some workers in concordville delaware county from chopper three. they are making progress but utility companies say that many customers could remain without power through the weekend. that is right here are latest numbers now peco reporting a little over 44,000 customers without power ac electric, with one 19,000 still off line and pse&g says a little will more than 9900 outages remain and del marva reports about 1800. other news now new jersey governor chris christie has

reportedly made the call. the associated press says he will run for president and he will make that announcement next week at his old high school in north jersey. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff is live in pennsauken and she spoke with new jersey residents about that reported decision today alex? >> reporter: chris as with any presidential contender analyst will take a close look at how their own states feel about them to judge how the nation might. here in south jersey, we did just that. though moment is not yet here notion is not new. >> i'm not suppliesed whatsoever. i thought he would run last time. it is not shocking to me. i think, i know a lot of republicans who are happy about it. >> reporter: she is's a democrat and teacher. she would rather see chris christie in her classroom over the oval office. >> i work for camden. i just don't think he is interested in. >> reporter: as republican governing a typically blue state christie has highlighted his ability to do business

with new jersey's democratic legislature. >> i wouldn't trust him. >> i don't trust him. >> he is certainly willing to say what he thinks and it gets him in trouble frequently but it is certainly something we need, we need someone to step up and say it isn't right and let's fix it. >> reporter: christie's bold persona has worked with and against him earning support from fiscal conservatives and less from sectors that felt cuts. >> we had a bad term as far as state employees as far as him taking away our pension and there are several things that we did not approve of. so to be honest, i'm not a fan of his. >> reporter: teresa davis is a new york shore watched new jersey politics from across the hudson. her view of christie's presidential potential is not crystal clear. >> i'm on the fence really, i'd to have see who is lined up and who we have to choose from. >> reporter: chris tit is entering a crowd of republican hopefuls and it is expected that he will not be short any

attention. reporting live alexandria hoff for cbs-3 "eyewitness news" glow never is, thanks very much. still to come on "eyewitness news" we will have updates on the 2016 race for president, everything you need to know on tv and on line at cbs philly.com. well, this is it, today is philadelphia delegation's final day in rome as they now laid the ground work for the papal visit in september. part of today's work included updating the international press on the world meeting of families. lets go live to rome with my collogue jessica dean, there with more on what archbishop charles chaput had to say today, jessica? >> reporter: hi chris, good evening to you from rome, once again, archbishop chapu is one of the leaders of the delegation here to rome and today he was one of the key players at this official vatican press conference, about the world meeting of families and during this we have learned a lot about the numbers, they are expecting 15,000 people to come to the

actual meeting part of the world meeting of families. they call it the congress. those are people that will be coming into philadelphia in the days ahead of the visit from pope francis. >> we all have a family and family vice important to each one of us. >> reporter: on thursday philadelphia archbishop charles chaput spoke to the heart of the world meeting of families. chaput gathered with other church officials to layout plans for a meeting aimed at strengthening and enriching families from around the world. philadelphia bishop john macintyre announced many of the speakers who will address the host of issues from finances, to raising children in the internet age. >> we try to draw from people who are from all over the world and can speak to the livi the raising of a family in a variety of cultures and experiences. >> reporter: we know 6100 people have volunteered to help with the meeting and papal visit. more than 1600 people in the philadelphia area have offered their homes to visitors.

tall ships festival is underway on the delaware river. chopper three was overhead as those vessels pulled into town. they have lined up on the camden and philadelphia side of the river for some great vantage point and did they have ever have them. nearly a thousand military veterans from south jersey had a great view with their families. they have watched from the deck of the battleship new jersey: lets go to "eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers live with more on the festival from aboard the coastguard cutter, eagle matt, we solute you tonight.

>> reporter: good evening to you, chris. you saw veterans. there are active tooth i military members on board the u.s. coastguard cutter eagle. there about several dozen act a i have members. thinks different on this ship as compared to other hipps here at tall ships festival. this ship is still in service. in fact, it has been in service for the you had military since 1946, pretty incredible. we have video to show you. we took a sale up the delaware smaller boat tout meet this ship earlier today and took video as we came off the delaware. pretty remarkable to see all of the 13 ships getting into position here, both on the penns landing side of things and on the camden, new jersey side of things. that is different this year then both waterfronts are now involve with the several day festival that will last through the weekend. beyond just being able to tour ships, meet people who created the ships and who work on the ships. is there plenty of other stuff to do great food, beer if that is what you are looking

for. great stuff to be had. good family fun to put all that on it does take a lot of work behind the scenes. we have talked to a member of the new jersey state police who helped responsible for making sure that all of these events stay safe. >> four safety zones like we did today, and make sure everybody has a good, safe day and safe on the water. so far the public has been very compliant and enjoying themselves, and making sure everybody stays safe. >> reporter: some of the crowd here in penns landing relatively thin. this is first day of the festival. it is a little bit rainy. if you ask coastguard members on board the ship what they think of this rain they think it is nothing to get here they had to go through a storm with squals with wind gusts of 50 to 60 miles an hour, self hundred miles off of the atlantic seaboard. so this little will bit of drizzle to them this is just a break. hopefully you can meet them here at penns landing.

they will be here all weekend. we will be here covering it throughout. we are live at penns landing matt rivers, for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> big crowds out there matt, thanks very much. world's largest rubber duck, is also in town for the tall ship festival. this is momma duck. she weighs 11 tons and stand 61 feet tall. impressive sight where ever she go, we know the ducks create quite a stir and now it is here in person. from the banks of the delaware lets go all the way to the jersey shore. it is thursday, that means orr at the shore. kathy is in sea isle tonight and kathy usually orr at the shore is about the beach mini golf, but it is all about food it seems like today. >> we had align on food. we have had food truck festival this weekend. very exciting. we will talk more about that later in the weather cast but i have to tell you chris i have sand in my shoes. it feels good. it has been a really -- welshing between my toes. it has been a long winter in spring. behind me, the ocean looks

inviting. it is warming up. temperatures will be cooling down this weekend. we will talk to all of these people, coming up, they are down here for a vacation but first we will do a little weather. yeah, we have rowdy kids as well that finished up the school year. look at the storm scan three. we have a few sprinkles but we have not felt anything down the shore yet. we have a wall of showers moving into our suburbs soon they will be in philadelphia a little bit later on tonight. right now in the city it is 79. our average high is 85. you can see in allentown 74. millville 75. temperatures a little bit cooler down the shore. right now we're looking at an area of low pressure approaching from the west and by tomorrow you'll see it off shore, some morning rain, afternoon breaks, temperatures will be in the 70's but it gets even cooler, by saturday. we will see a easterly flow with high pressure off the coast. another low moving our way. we will talk about rain, wind. those winds out of the north/northeast at 15 to 25 miles an hour. that will be windy.
