one shot. shoots. scores! >> team u.s.a. is one win away after a rousing victory over germany. the u.s. women's national soccer team is poised to win the world soccer cup for the first time in 16 years. history in the making today as the united states and cuba mark a significant shift in more than 50 years of hostilities. the two countries announce plans to reopen embassies in each other's capitols. and oregon lights up becoming the fourth state to allow the legal recreational use of marijuana. this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, july 1st, 2015. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm alison harmelin in for anne-marie green.

the u.s. women's soccer team is headed to the world cup final after shutting out the germans 2-0 last night. the u.s. will play for the championship this sunday in vancouver. heather daniels reports. >> reporter: from canada to here in the u.s. soccer fans are cheering on team u.s.a. as they gear up for the women's world cup final. >> obviously we're delighted to be moving on. >> reporter: the american women beat top ranked germany 2-0 tuesday night to advance thanks to a penalty kick by team captain calie lloyd. >> i remained focused on what i need today do. it was a p.k. that i needed to sink. >> reporter: and an impressive goal by kelly o'hara. >> it was wild. i think i blacked out for a second to be honest. >> reporter: team u.s.a. has fought hard in this tournament putting not only their dreams but their bodies on the line as they shut out the competition along the way. >> i think we're clicking at the right time and we're peeking at the right time. we feel we're playing our best

soccer. >> reporter: fans will be keeping their eye on tonight's japan/england match-up. they will take on the team this sunday in van cover. the u.s. women have only one goal in mind to bring a third world cup title home cbs news. coming up on cbs this morning, carli lloyd who scored one of team u.s.a.'s goals and assisted on the other. overnight, another prominent african-american church in the south burned to the ground the target of a suspicious fire. the fire that destroyed the mount zion ame church started last night. the cause of the fire is under investigation. it's the latest in a string of fires at predominantly black churches in the wake of the charleston massacre. federal officials are investigating at least five including the briar creek road baptist church in charlotte. >> i can speak for this church that we've already forgiven him and we want to move forward. >> reporter: fire investigators quickly determined that the

briar creek fire set exactly a week after the charleston shooting was the work of an arsonist. the motive remains unclear. at this point this and other fires haven't been tied to events in charleston but the fbi is investigating a possible hate crime. >> in view of the things that have happened over the last couple of weeks, we really want to actually cover it in love. we don't have any malice over anyone else other than may god speak to their hearts. that's the thing we want as a message to be passed on. >> reporter: last week's fire at a church in macon georgia was dhib ber rately set. >> i couldn't believe it. once i got here i cried. i did. >> reporter: there also have been suspicious fires in knoxville, tennessee, the first after the charleston shootings and jackson, mississippi. though it's unclear if these fires are related or bias motivated motivated. the most infamous may be the bombing of the 16th street

baptist church in birmingham back in 1963 by white supremacists. four young girls were killed in the explosion. >> no one was injured and they're also looking at the possibility that the fire was started by lightning. the justice department is blasting the police response by police handling of the protests. the review faults their use of tear gas and military-style equipment and it finds police violated protesters' consttutional rights. a major diplomatic step between the u.s. and cuba. president obama is expected to announce this morning that the u.s. and cuba have a gleed to reopen embassies in each other's capitols. the u.s. embassy in havana is expected to open this month. >> reporter: president obama will announce an agreement to open embassies in washington and havana. it will mark the formal re-establishment of diplomatic relations. cbs news has learned the deal

faced weeks of delays because the u.s. wanted to make sure its ambassador to cuba would be allowed to travel freely. last september the president announced that the u.s. would move to restore ties with the communist country after more than half a century. >> isolation has not worked. it's time for a new approach. >> reporter: in april president obama met cuban president raul castro in panama. it was the first face-to-face meeting in nearly six decades. last month the state department removed cuba from the state list of terrorism. the u.s. hasn't had an ambassador to cuba since 1961. not everyone is pleased by the latest diplomatic moves between cuba and the u.s. florida congresswoman issued a statement saying the opening of the american embassy in cuba will do nothing to help the cuban people. it is just another trivial attempt for president obama to go legacy shopping.

a new wildfire in washington is prompting evacuations this morning. the fire in quincy is located about 30 miles southeast of the wildfire that destroyed more than two dozen homes last week. residents in wenatchee were allowed to return to their homes on wednesday. for some all that was left is a smoldering ruin. >> reporter: >> there were nearly four rivers of fire. >> reporter: marry beth showed us video of friends and family frantically spraying her yard with water. >> my husband and two friends and my younger son stayed until they literally had to run. >> reporter: her home was destroyed. one of 29 homes swallowed by the 3,000 acre sleepy hollow fire. >> i've never seen my fire in my 22 years i've been here travel that quickly. >> reporter: at a community meeting the sheriff's office told the crowd the fire was likely started by people because

there were no lightning strikes in the area sunday night. emergency managers say the fire is now 40 to 50% contained and is not expected to destroy anymore homes though that means little to those who have already lost everything. >> it's just when it came down the canyon and there were big embers. >> reporter: shelly grange ger and her children saw the charred remains of their house tuesday. the last time she was here granger spread from the flames. >> my car at the end of the street and just -- my house was on fire and i just get out of here. we're sorry. there's nothing you can do. >> reporter: everyone who has a home still standing in this area was allowed to return to it but there is still a level one warning in effect basically saying be aware because there is still a firefighting operation going on in the area. henry ross for cbs news wenatchee. in the southeast flooding is the issue. up to 2 inches of rain an hour fell in texas. streets were flooded as were

homes. it was the same story in louisiana. 30 homes and one parish took on water but there are no reports of injury. the state department released thousands of pages of hillary clinton's e-mails overnight complying with the judge's order. the batch comes from her first year as secretary of state. they show top obama administration officials knew early on that she was using a private e-mail address. about two dozen of the e-mails warranted classification because they contained sensitive information. this morning anyone can review more than three decades of jeb bush's tax returns. the republican presidential candidate posted returns going back to 1981 on a website. they showed the former two-term florida governor earned almost $28 million since leaving office in 2007. he took in $7.4 million in 2013 mostly consulting and giving speeches. bush paid an effective federal income tax rate of about 36%. this morning chris christie is on a five-day campaign swing in new hampshire. the new jersey governor made his

republican presidential bid official tuesday. >> i mean what i say and i say what i mean and that's what america needs right now. >> christie is running as a straight talking washington outsider. made the announcement at the new jersey high school where he graduated 35 years ago. he is the 14th republican to join the race. donald trump is suing univision for $500 million. the republican presidential hopeful accuses the network of breach of contract for dumping his miss u.s.a. and miss universe paneling against. they cut ties after he said mexico was quote, rapists and brought crimes and drugs to the u.s. univision calls the suit ridiculous. coming up throwing a life line. trying to save people in the middle of a raging river. dramatic river rescue in maine. a teen and a young boy are stranded on rocks tuesday after being knocked from a tube in a fast-flowing river. rescuers float to them in a yellow boat secured by ropes. the rantz are so strong one of the rescuers are tossed into the river. after an hour both are pulled to safety escaping without injury. fallout this morning in the aftermath of that prison escape in upstate new york. two prison employees have already been charged with helping the escapees. now as the investigation expands, the prison superintendant and two other top prison executives have been put on administrative paid leave. nine security staff were also put on paid leave. one of the escaped prisoners, david sweat, said he and richard matt made a practice run the night before they broke out of the clinton correctional facility. sweat was shot and captured sunday. he says he started cutting through the steel cell block walls in january. he said he used a hacksaw blade in contrast to what authorities

said, didn't use power tools at all. richard matt was shot and killed last friday. it's reported his estranged son will claim his body. matt was shot three times in the head. matt's son said his father's death was wrongful. straight ahead, breaking beers. misty copeland makes history with the american ballerina theater. hulk hogan chalks up a win for his ban dana in his pro fight.

. here is a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. this morning recreational marijuana is legal in oregon. hundreds of pot advocates celebrated just after midnight at the symbolic bernside bridge in portland. last fall voters made oregon the fourth state to legalize pot. it's already legal in alaska colorado, and washington as well as the district of columbia. anyone over 21 can carry one ounce and have four plants at home. on the cbs "moneywatch" uber drives up losses and hulk hogan has a win in his court battle. >> reporter: good morning, alison. they'll consider an emergency bailout loan for greece. earlier they became the first developed country to default on an international monetary fund

loan. today the banks are closed. pensioners can make withdrawals. thousands gathered outside parliament to rally for a yes vote in sunday's referendum. despite the financial turmoil in greece, the u.s. stock market rebounded tuesday following monday's big selloff. the dow gained 23 points the s&p rose 5 and the nasdaq finished 28 points higher. uber is telling prospective investor it's encouraged $470 million in operating losses. uber operates in 300 cities worldwie. it's valued at $40 billion. an uber spokesman told them it's old numbers and do not reflect business activities today. apple lost an appeal in a price fixing suit and has been ordered to pay a $450 million fine. apple was found guilty of conspiring with publishers to fix the price of ebooks. apple says it did nothing wrong.

most of the fine will go to customers who are part of a class action lawsuit. a big change at nike. founder and chairman phil knight says he is stepping down. knight is 77 years old. he started nike back in 1964 and built the company into one of the most recognizable and valuable sports brands in the world. knight isn't saying exactly when he'll step aside. there's also a change in fashion. donna karen is stepping down. it's been popular with working women. karen plans to stay on as adviser and she'll spend more time on her urban zen line. hulk hogan has a victory. a judge is allowing the pro wrestler to wear his signature bandana to court but it must be plain. a florida jury will decide if hogan suffered $100 million in damages after gawker published a sex tape featuring hogan in 2012. alison. >> jill wagner, the new york

cardinals and white sox fans found out last night. chris hale dominates st. louis. he struck out 12 cardinals pitchers and ties a major league mark by recording 10 or more strikeouts in eight straight starts. the white sox win in extra innings, 2-1. the big names in the men's field at wimbledon are moving on. roger federer wins his opening match in straight sets as did other former champs andy murray and rafael nadal. the big upset simone na halub bows out in her first match. brett favre says he can still sling it with today's nfl quarterbacks. in an interview with "sports illustrated" the 45-year-old favre says he has the arm set to make all the throws the nfl demands but he no longer has what it takes to lead a team. even when he believes in his abilities,' not planning a comeback any time soon. he retired in 2001 after 20 years in pro football. coming up after your local
