a tornado tears through the kansas city area ripping off roofs and lighting up power line. this weather system is headed our way and could impact the fourth of july holiday weekend. but first we're track something heavy rains that are moving across delaware and into south jersey tonight. this could be a shore spoiler for anyone starting their holiday vacation early. rain already starting to fall down the shore tonight and it's turning into another busy weather week. good evening to you i'm jessica dean. we now know it was an ef1 tornado that tour through honey brook chester county yesterday. the national weather service making that declaration today. that means wind speeds there hit 95 miles per hour. that wind damageed mobile homes and barnes in the area. repairs already underway today. officials say that twister was 100 yards wide and lasted for 1.5 miles. and the national weather service says a micro burst not a tornado touched down in the

lehigh valley. agency sent a team to whitehall township today to survey damage after yesterday's powerful storm storm. this mark the second tuesday in a row of severe weather for our area. and meteorologist kate bilo has more dough tails now about the damaging storms and also the chance for more wet weather over the next few days. kate. >> thank you jessica. let's hope next tuesday is quiet. we don't need to start a trend especially after the damage we've received with these storms. let's go more in detail with that confirmed tornado touchdown in honey brook chester county that was a 2:11 on tuesday. more than 10 minutes lead time on that with tornado warning issued around 2:00 p.m. it was an ef1 tornado. 95 miles per hour winds the path was 1.5 miles long and width of 100 yards pretty maze. zero confirmed injuries with that tornado touchdown. little further to the north and east in whitehall township in lehigh county, straight line winds with a micro burst. wind speed 80 miles per hour with a path length of about

440 yards. storm scan3 right now once again shows around of showers and storms that have developed and you can see this one moving very close to the shore points at the moment. wee got a few more in kent county, delaware but you can see if you're in atlantic city, watch out a lot of folks out on the boardwalk still tonight. heavy rain is moving down the atlantic city expressway right around galloway down toward egg harbor township. you can see the bulls eye and lightning reported with this as well. so rain and lightning headed toward atlantic city at the moment. we'll continue to track that. i also want to show you the next system again back to the west. the storms moving through kansas city right now this moisture lining up and it's going start lifting north as we get into tomorrow. some of that moisture could head down the shore once again. so the same areas seeing the showers and storms tonight will see it as we get into the day tomorrow and here it is. showers and thunderstorms break out just for the shore points tomorrow afternoon. could put a little damper on early start to the holiday weekend. i'll have your full july 4th weekend forecast coming up. jessica. >> kate, see in you a bit. thank you. right now rescue teams are searching for a missing swimmer

in gloucester county. they were called to a quarry on jackson road near piney hollow road in monroe township. we're told four people swimming in the quarry reported one teenager dove in and disappeared disappeared. chopper three over that scene earlier tonight much this quarry is in a did he secluded area and neighbors say it is a dangerous place to swim. >> you walk out like a few feet and it's like -- you feel the clay and everything and it just drops off like, i don't know how deep. >> if you hit something you're screwed. because there's lot of stuff in there. >> so far police have fought released the name or age of that missing swimmer. july 4th always brings with it a special celebration here in philadelphia with concerts fireworks and tourists taking in our historical sites and all of that will happen with the warning from authorities about the potential for a terrorist attack in the us. and also how law enforcement is gearing up. david? >> reporter: jessica it's not uncommon for security analysts to put out these bull tips when a national holiday is just around the corner. however, they're paying extra close attention to this one and they want to make sure that people are safe. after all july 4th is just a few days away. (bell tolls). >> reporter: it's the busy season around independence hall. >> happy fourth of july! >> reporter: and plenty of people are out ready to celebrate the fourth where it all began 239 years ago. >> it's exciting to be out here. i've never been out to philly before so we're excited to see the sites. >> reporter: but law enforcement across the country will have more eyes and ears out than ever before. after the fbi and homeland security recently warned americans to pay attention. >> there are no specific threats targeting any location. >> reporter: but fbi philadelphia agent jj labor we are says it's best to watch your surrounding have fun but at the

same time make sure you know what's going on around you. >> there are groups that want to target our nation's critical infrastructure and symbolic locations and events. >> reporter: infrastructure like independence hall. the former pennsylvania state house built in 1732. earlier this week, former cia insider and cbs news security analyst mike morrell warned of a possible attack. >> i wouldn't be surprised if we're sitting here a week from today talking about an tack over the weekend in the united states. that's hour serious this is. report roar those warnings are being heard by americans. though they plan to still have an old-fashioned fourth of july. >> you hear so much you hope nothing goes wrong. that's all. enjoy your day. try not to think about it. hope for the best. >> am i going to hide in my house and lock my doors and pull down my stayed? no, i'm not going to do that because life is worth living. >> reporter: law enforcement sources won't say exactly how many law enforcement officers will be here for the holiday weekend. there's going to be some in official uniforms some officers

that are undercover but the bottom line, jessica if see something they want people to call 911 to be safe. reporting live at independence hall tonight david spunt cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> hopefully it's a safe weekend, david thanks so much just as the summer travel season is heating up several major airlines are under investigation investigation. tonight the department of justice wants to know if they have been conspiring to keep prices high. the airlines under investigation are some of the industry heavyweights. american southwest and united. all received letters from the department of justice which american airlines says asked for quote documents and information from the last two years relateed to statements and decisions about airline capacity. federal prosecutors want to know if airlines conspire to limit available seats. if true, that would keep airfares high with four mergers since 2084 airlines now control more than 80% of seats on u.s. planes. the average domestic airfare

rose 13% from 2009 to 2014 leaving airlines to record profits. a spokesperson for the industry defended the airlines saying "it is customers who decide priceing and our members compete vigorously every day and the traveling public has been the beneficiary". >> technology today is so pervasive that airlines can watch what they're competitors are doing in real time and make decisions almost instantly that change their level of capacity based on what somebody else is doing. >> reporter: several smaller airlines including jet blue and frontier say they did not receive letters from the department of justice. we will, of course, keep you posted on this. septa says it will meet a federal deadline to improve rail safety by the end of the year. today septa demonstrated it's positive train control system for the pennsylvania congressional delegation in frasier chester county. positive train control can slow a train if it goes over a speed limit or even stop a train if an engineer ignores a signal to

stop. lawmakers are pushing for more federal funding to pay for that technology. >> i don't believe congress should ever put any transit agency in the position of having to choose between safety or on the other hand repairing infrastructure. >> government officials believe positive train control technology could have prevented the deadly amtrak derailment back in may. cherry hill man facing charges to night for poseing a mortgage lone specialist and police want to know if there are more vick testimony out there. take look at the suspect mark begley. police say he stole $146,000 from residents in burlington county and then used the money for his personal expenses. authorities continue to investigate. they do worry there could be more victims. beg system behind bars tonight at the burlington county jail. a case of animal abuse is uncovered inside a philadelphia home. spca officials served a warrant at this house on the 6300 block of north lambert street in

ogontz. inside they found five do dogs tied up in the base. one of them dead a pair of snakes. authorities say all the animals were in bad shape. >> this is a breeding possible al fighting operation going on here. there was other illegal paraphernalia found inside the property which the philadelphia police took custody of. >> no arrests have been made. it has happened again. for the seventh time this summer a swimmer is attacked by a shark in the waters off north carolina carolina. coming up we will tell you why experts believe the dangerous end counters keep happening. and it is an era many are happy to see come to an end. why neighbors hope this demolition will lead to better things in one south jersey community. kate? >> and coming up i'll have a look at your holiday weekend forecast. we'll be tracking showers and perhaps a thunderstorm or two. things getting a little interesting down the shore tomorrow. i'll have more on that. plus this.

>> more than half century of cold war tensions between the u.s. and cuba continue to thaw in a dramatic way. today president obama announced embassies will open in both countries this month. >> later this summer secretary kerry will travel to havana formally to proudly raise the american flag over our embassy once more. this is not merely symbolic. with this change, we will be able to substantially increase our contacts with the cuban people. >> the us and cuba began the effort to restore diplomatic relations last year. critics oppose the move until cuba addresses human rights violations and meets other conditions. it has happened again. another man attacked by a shark along north carolina beach today. the skate-year-old victim bitten a few times. officials say this shark was about 7 feet long. this summer there have been seven confirmed shark tax along

north carolina beaches and experts believe the shark attacks might be relateed to unseasonably high ocean temperatures causing sharks to migrate north earlier than usual usual. demolition now underway along a stretch of the black horse pike in egg harbor township. five dilapidateed motels are being torn down. the mayor has been trying to get rid of these motels for 25 years and glad to see them go. $3 million needed to purchase and demolish the properties came from the casson know reinvestment development authority. the road is a gateway to atlantic city. macy's joins the growing list of organizations cutting ties with donald trump. the department store will no longer carry donald trump dress shirts neck ties and cuff links. the businessman and presidential candidate offended many when he called mexican immigrants quote rapists and killers. online petition urging macy's to drop trump got over 700,000 signatures. he has taken over the late

tonight. the center city skyline from the south street bridge. a lot of people were out biking jogging walking the dog. it was a really great night to be outside. especially because most of us had to stay unside last night with all the severe weather that came through, of course, it was a very very messy night with rain all night long. tonight everyone was making the most of it getting out and doing what they needed to do. people are still out on the bore walk in atlantic city at this hour, and you're going to want to get inside if you're there because let's take you out to storm scan3. see what's going on. a couple of storms that have formed most of the night has been quiet but now the storms are here. and they're mainly off to the south and this is where they will be tomorrow as well. showers and thunderstorms in kent county, delaware and then as we zoom up toward atlantic city here's the storm we're talking about and notice this is headed toward mystic island, galloway, egg harbor township right toward atlantic city and up toward lbi as well you'll get it win the next half hour or so. it's got heavy rain with it and also frequent lightning. please be safe. get inside if you're in these areas you don't want to be out

in the storm like this as we know even a storm that's not severe can pack quite a punch especially with heavy rain and notice the atlantic city air part couple of miles inland look at the rain cooled air dropped to 69 as that rain moves through. still 80 at the philadelphia international airport. it's 74 in wilmington. and it's 73 in millville. let's take you through the next couple of days because we start off tomorrow with a few clouds and then here comes some showers and we call this a shore spoiler the reason for that you can see where the showers and storms line up. mainly down the shore from lbi right on through the delaware beaches. we're not talking about severe thunderstorms. we're mainly talking about light showers that are just going to put a damper on your beach day. that then clears out friday is a good day. high pressure starts to push and in showers are suppressed to the south. what we have to watch is all this moisture associated with some of the storms happening tonight. in kansas city. that's going to start to push east but if we can keep it suppressed maybe a stray thunderstorm on the fourth of july. it does look like most of the moisture will miss us to the east and to the west. we'll keep a close eye on that

for you. can't rule out a shower or thunderstorm but does it not look like a wash out that is for sure for your fourth of july. so rain chances for the next few days, 20% for tomorrow. that's for the city. much greater chance if you're down the shore. friday 10% chance of a stray shower mainly off to our south. saturday fourth of july giving us a 30%. better chance for scattered thunderstorms not an all day event and sunday looks like 0% chance. should be a full day of sun and nice and warm. overnight tonight partly cloudy, seasonably mild, 68 degrees. for your thursday, some sun but watch for the showers mainly to the south and southeast. 85 degrees for tomorrow. we jump ahead to saturday. big fourth of july plans and can't rule out a thunderstorm or two mainly philadelphia and down the shore. the poconos we're looking at partly sunny and 78 degrees. "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast well, it looks pretty good. friday looks good for any travel plans. saturday just keep an eye to the sky your barbecue should get in no problem. nice and warm with sunshine. sunday and monday.
