239 years ago today the founding fathers declared our freedom from british rule at independence hall. tonight philadelphia is the scene of a very patriotic celebration. "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson is on the parkway where that celebration is under way. steve, i know you're having a great time out there. how you doing? >> reporter: we are rocking this. absolutely unbelievable. i have to apologize if i'm yelling 'cause i can barely here myself. ceelo green just took the state. pan over to the crowd. it's unbelievable the energy, the electricity. earlier we wanted to hit the crowd go into the parkway and find out what it was like deep inside and here's what happened. take a look. >> ♪ >> reporter: the closer you

get to the stage the further away you get from the truth. it's parkway pandemonium on the fourth of july. don't forks let me explain. near the front of the masses it's what you expect. >> we've been in the park since 7:30 this morning. >> reporter: here's a lady who has been vigilantly camped out for 14 hours. >> so we can get a good spot which was this spot. >> reporter: and look, there's the couple celebrating their two year anniversary near the same place they got engaged. >> it's awesome to be here and to see the art museum where he proposed. it's great. >> reporter: deeper in you might spot some of the hundreds of brave men and women trying to police hundreds of thousands. like this woman who only speaks in concepts. >> i like the fireworks. >> reporter: what else. >> and the colors. >> reporter: okay. >> and the people. and the food. everything. >> reporter: deep. like this guy who knows how to work a crowd. >> why do i come out? to celebrate america. why else come out. >> reporter: and when we got so far in that we could barely hear the music we found snake

guy. >> we on tv. let's pit around your neck. >> reporter: why take snakes into a crowd like this. >> they wanted to see beyoncé. >> reporter: don't worry i didn't tell him beyoncé isn't around. judging by the attention he's getting i didn't think that was his goal anyway. pandemonium and oh, yeah, the music was good, too. >> ♪ >> reporter: and we are back live where the party continues. ceelo green up on the state. we're so close. the roots are up there. i swear i can see the curvature of ?uestlove's afro pick. it's amazing. the music has been going strong for about an hour now. we expect to see some fireworks after this set is over. i got to tell you that we spoke to a member of the philadelphia police department who says although there are countless number of people here, we're talking hundreds of thousands the number they're focused on is zero. they've had no arrests tonight which is pretty unbelievable.

"eyewitness news" at the camden riverfront where plenty of folks enjoyed some music an beautiful evening. meteorologist justin drabick is in the cbs3 weather center with a look at the forecast. hey, justin. >> hi, natasha. the rain may have dampened your barbecue. don't worry, the rest of the weekend looks guilty we'll be back in full surgeon it will feel lick summer once again. here's what's left of any sprinkles across central new jersey and a lot of this not even reaching the ground,? you have the some clouds over part of the delaware valley, they'll continue to thin out, break up as we move through the overnight hours. that sets the stage for a nice finish to our weekend.

these were the high temperatures today. so, from the city on northward we had the thicker cloud cover, steadier rain, temperatures only in the low to mid 70's. berks county and the lehigh valley some sunshine though in south jersey got temperatures up into the low 80's for millville and at the atlantic city airport. here's where we are right now. upper 60's to 70 degrees, end upper 50's in the poconos this hour. how about that? nice breeze off the atlantic ocean keeping the temperatures along the coast in the low 70's and that ocean water is at 73 degrees. here's what you'll wake up to on sunday morning temperatures in the upper 60's around philadelphia, surrounding suburbs a little bit cooler low and mid 60's tow sew notso not a bard start tote day. you'll love tomorrow's forecast. enjoy it 87 degrees around philadelphia at the shore beautiful day upper 70's and looks great in the mountains temperatures in the upper 70's. we'll talk about 90-degree temperatures in the seven-day forecast. details in a minute. natasha. >> thank you justin. a day full of all things

stars and stripes right here in philadelphia starting the day off with a celebration of freedom ceremony at the birthplace of the declaration of independence. crowds gathered at independence hall for patriotic music and reading of the declaration. the ceremony commemorated other important milestones as well like the 50th anniversary of the first major lgbt protest in the u.s. philadelphia philadelphia mayor michael nutter addressed the crowd. >> happy independence day. it's a great, great honor to welcome all of you my fellow philadelphians and visitors alike to the birthplace of democracy, our nation's first capitol. >> independent day parade followed the ceremony which went all throughout historic philadelphia. more celebrations at the independence visitor's center where visitors got to take part in a very special birthday party for america. partygoers got to enjoy some delicious patriotic treats including a five tear cake along with hundreds of cup cakes displayed in the shape

of an american flag. and betsy ross led the crowd in singing happy birthday to america. the earlier gray skies and rain could not keep people away from the beach today t here's a look down the shore at ocean city earlier where plenty of folks celebrated july 4th in the sand and surf this afternoon. they didn't need any sun. okay. police do remain on high alert, though, all around the country as people celebrate our nation's independence. as cbs's kenneth craig tells us extra security measures are being taken to keep america safe this fourth of july weekend. >> reporter: fireworks lit up the night sky over the east river in new york city. an estimated 3 million spectators didn't let a terror threat warning rain on their fourth of july celebration. >> we can't live our lives in fear. bad things can happen but we can't live our flies fear. >> reporter: concerned about a potential lone wolf style attack the nypd deployed an extra 7,000 heavily armed police officers to watch over

the crowds. >> it's not so much we know that concerns us it's what we might not know. >> reporter: police here say there have not been any specific threats but they are ready. >> i thought no, this is fine, i'm going to come here and i'm going have a good time. >> reporter: law enforcement also beefed up security at other high value targets like the national mall in washington, d.c. 18,000 feet of chain-link fence surrounded the landmark, thousands of people passed through streaming check points before they could find a spot to watch the fireworks and in philadelphia, the birthplace of the declaration of independence, pride and patriotism were on full display under heavy security. kenneth craig cbs news, new york. >> tonight a norristown man is behind bars. philadelphia police say he is the one who murdered a east mount airy grandmother. homicide detectives announced the arrest of leroy wilson in

the death of regina brunner. police say wilson was working as a handyman for the browners at the time the murder took place. >> he came to her door that night. she knew him from previous times where he did work for her, let him in. we believe he probably was stealing something from her maybe she caught him in the act of doing that and with that he was set off beat her and stabbed her and ultimately killed her. >> detectives believe wilson acted alone and they say that he has a lengthy criminal history filled with violent crimes. also tonight two camden county police officers are on leave after a deadly officer-involved shooting. it happened late last night in the cramer hill neighborhood of east camden. officers responded to the reports of a man with a gun at the corner of bergen and harrison avenues. when they arrived officers say the man pointed a loaded weapon at them so they opened fire. an independent investigation will be conducted as is the case in cases like this. camden county police say this

is the first officer-involved shooting in the department's 26-month history. a man suspected of shooting a camden county police officer is in custody tonight and police arrested victor ben in it in collingswood on friday after a brief foot chase. investigators say bennett shot a police officer in the arm in camden on wednesday night. that officer is expected to recover. and police are now searching for two suspects involved in a gun battle in university city. it happened on the 3500 block of samson street when police say gunfire erupted between several people shortly after 1:30 in the morning. police say the two male suspects are both between the ages of 21 and 30. two people remain in the hospital in critical condition. a crash on the roosevelt boulevard leaves a teenager dead and another man in critical condition. "eyewitness news" at adams avenue in lawncrest. police say the 19-year-old lost control of his car and

hit a tree at around 3 o'clock this morning. med ticks pronouncedmedics pronounced him dead at the scene. his passenger is in critical condition tonight. delaware environmental officials preparing for a spike in the mosquito population. they say recent heavy rains are beneficial to mosquito egg breeding. higher than normal mosquito counts are already being reported in milford, laurel and dover, delaware. the mosquito population is closely tracked because mosquitoes can transmit west nile virus. >> ♪ now to campaign 2016. several presidential candidates are spending independence day on the campaign trail in new hampshire. and new jersey governor chris christie is one of them. he was in wolf borrow this morning for the town's fourth of july parade. christie has been barnstorming the state since he officially

declared his run for president earlier this week. he is trailing in recent polls and is part of a crowded republican field that already has 13 other declared candidates. hillary clinton is also in new hampshire today. the former secretary of state and first lady held a rally in glen. clinton discussed improvements to president obama's healthcare overhaul and ways to help the middle class. she also said that small businesses are one of the cornerstones of the american economy. and senator and presidential candidate bernie sanders is in iowa for the fourth of july. the vermont independent who is running as a democrat marched through the streets today flanked by supporters. recent polls show sanders' campaign is gaining momentum, though he still trails the favorite for the democratic nomination, hillary clinton.

he was stunned today by 23-year-old matt stonie. stonn knee downed 62 hot dogs and buns beating chestnut by two but he better not rest easy. chestnut will be back next year he saint mary's he says the competition has made him "hungry." for the largest ferris wheel on the east coast reopened today after riders got quite the scare yesterday. 66 people were stranded on the orlando eye when it suddenly just stopped. all of them had to be evacuated, a process that took more than three hours. no one was injured in this malfunction. the wheel towers 400 feet in the sky so that was very, very scary situation. a fun night of fireworks turns terrifying when several shells misfire and hurl into the crowd. this malfunction was caught on cell phone video. nine people suffered minor injuries. it happened last night in the town of avon, colorado in front of about 20,000 people. the accident is currently

under investigation. take a look: a very close call for a baby who drifted out to sea. the 10 month old it's inflatable crib kept her floating off the turkish coast and she was later rescued by the coast guard. the girl's parents forgot they left her in the crib they say and said they didn't even know what happened until other beach goers told them. that is just unbelievable. justin, the skies have cleared. >> yes. >> fireworks are already in display in some places. i think we're counting down. >> we're waiting here in philadelphia. good news is for the rest of the holiday weekend nice and dry. sunshine will be out. it will be warm. maybe if you're going to hit the beach, pool, outdoor barbecue looks great for sunday afternoon get outside if you can and enjoy it. we'll look at the shore. live look at atlantic city right now where we could see some beach days today sunshine around through evening. same deal tomorrow, temperature in the upper 70's. that ocean water is comfortable, in the low 70's right now. all right. storm scan3 looking a whole

lot better than about oh, 12 hours ago as we are drying out nicely. still some clouds over the delaware valley but those continue to break up and spin out as we progress through the overnight hours. nice area of high pressure builds back into the region. that brings back mostly sunny conditions. didn't feel like summer, didn't feel like the fourth of july really as far as the numbers go. upper 70's at best. but 87 is where we should be this time of year. looks like we'll hit that sunday and monday and even warm up more for tuesday and wednesday as we get into the lower 90's. also the humidity increases. by the end of the week looks like we drop to back to near average. here's where we are right now, upper 60's north and west to around 70 degrees for philadelphia and wilmington, low 70's near the shore point. we have a breeze off the ocean right now. again that ocean water is in the low 70's. that's why the air temperatures with the similar numbers. how is it going to feel this week? tomorrow not that bad. still on the humid side. each day we start to stack up

that humidity level. tuesday and wednesday will be the worst of it out of the next seven days. enjoy tomorrow, lots of sunshine, mid and upper 80's for high temperatures. high pressure will keep us nice and dry plenty of sunshine around. that high will be over new england but it starts to drift north and east for monday allowing more clouds to build in for monday. still dry. tuesday if we're going to watch this cold front move in from the west late tuesday probably late afternoon evening chance for a scattered shower or a thunderstorm still very humid and hot temperatures well into the upper 80's. here's tomorrow morning. 7 o'clock. just waking were up to some clouds with some sunshine. overall not a bad day. into the afternoon mostly sunny conditions for your sunday. we head back to reality on monday. going to work, 7:00 a.m., clouds starter to move in from the south and west. most or all of the day on monday we'll stay dry with just partly sunny skies. not a bad start to the upcoming work week. temperature-wise look at the inland spots tomorrow. well into the mid and upper 80's. the exception will be the
