sfx: crowd cheering sfx: crowd booing ♪ sfx: crowd chanting sfx: crowd cheering music stops sc johnson a family company. >> right now at 11:00, fierce storms moved quickly through the region but leave behind devastating damage. this is all that's left of one berks county school. fortunately no one was hur to the sowm major damage being reported in parts of delaware. "eyewitness news" cameras in new castle tonight where a building was torn apart and an industrial area. in the city, strong winds and torrential rains brought down this large tree in washington square west and right

now thousands in our area are without power. good evening to you, i'm jessica dean. it has been another summer night of severe weather alerts includeing a tornado warning. we have team thee coverage of these damaging storms and we start with meteorologist kate bilo with a look what's happening right now. kate. jessica the best news that the storms have moved on out and the severe threat has ended in fact just in the past minute or so i got word flash flood warning that had been in effect for the city of philadelphia portions of montgomery, bucks counties and burlington county has also expired or been canceled. so the worst is now gone. you can see the storms are now out to sea but this was at least six hours of severe weather that ripped from west to east all across the area. leaving damage in its wake, and a lot of damage at that. let's take look. this is a six-hour loop first you can see the storms pushing that was berks county right about here. that's the storm that could have caused the damage to that school. then the storms moved through philadelphia slowly pushing into new jersey where we tornado

warning in burlington county still no word if tornado that touched down or not. it was a doppler indicated tornado. few showers to the west you can see this hook that came through just north of reading. in fact i want to show you a couple of more those photos the school that was damaged in portions of berks county. this is near till don am hamburg just north and west of reading. you can see this school is almost completely demolish. i tried to look for tornado signature could have been a little bit of rotation detected with that still remains to be seen whether this was a tornado that moved through berks county or better wet water actually straight line winds or micro burst winds much you can see the extent of that devastation that school completely leveled there in till don berks county. back to storm scan3 as we move through the rest of tonight things are quiting down. i want to show you how much rain has fallen. many spots checked in with over 2-inches of rain and while some wind damage reports as well in berks county roof damage reported five homes in downingtown trees and wires down

down. partial collapse of three buildings in new castle delaware norristown pa large tree branches reported down and in wood side, delaware, a large number of trees down as well. so you can see as the rain spread through the region right around philadelphia, southern bucks county into burlington county very heavy rain on the order of two plus inches but the good news is despite a stray shower lingering to night we'll clear thing out. tomorrow starts with sunshine and the afternoon looks great. as we begin a friday it looks like a pretty nice summer weekend. much better way on the way as we head through our weekend much jessica, back over to you. >> kay thanks so much. tonight's storms did some damage here in the city. "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is live in washington square west where a large tree has blocked a street. david? >> reporter: jessica you expect to see these things in wide open areas but not the city especially washington square with these buildings. take look at this tree it looks very healthy from the ground up but obviously the root structure underneath just could not hold this tree from the win i want to back out of the way so you can see this.

we're at the 1100 block of rodman street much this tree just completely collapsed over from this wind and hit this home home. now we want to she you some surveillance video that we got from somebody that lives on this street. it actually shows you the moment that the tree fell down. the winds started to pick up and that's when that tree literally slammed into the building. the good news nobody was hurt. i had chance to speak to that person that lives in that building. she was home and believe it or not she says that she didn't even hear it hit the house. take a listen. >> during the storm, i was putting my son to bed and i got a text from neighbor saying are you okay? i said yeah, we're fine. and then 20 minutes later she rank our doorbell and said are you sure you're fine and i said, yeah. then she said why don't you look out the win dome don't you know a tree wept against your house and i had no idea. we were completely shocked. >> reporter: no power lines hit at all but peco crews are expected to come out here just to take look to make sure that there is no serious damage again

it's just amazing how quickly this happened and especially with a tree this old. i talk to neighbor that's been here 20 years he tells me a lot of these trees are old and it really doesn't take that much wind to knock these over but the good news jessica nobody was hurt tonight because after all this could have been a lot worse. we're live in washington square tonight, david spunt cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> that is the good news, david thanks so much. these storms led to power outages across the region. peco is reporting 7,129 homes and businesses without power. dell ma march have a nearly 4900. pse&g over 3800. ac electric reporting 1,176. and med he had 912. there were power outages earlier today following a fire and explosion after a manhole erupted in the heart of old city city. "eyewitness news" cameras were the only ones rolling as dark smoke billowed out of the ground ground. now this force the evacuations in parts of old city and street closures blocks from historic

landmarks there. authorities say a blown transformer caused the fire and explosion but no one was injured injured. in the morning historic change will take place in south carolina after the governor took action on the confederate flag today. >> the confederate flag is coming off the grub of the south carolina state house. (applause). >> moments after those remarks republican governor nicky haley signed a bill removing the confederate flag from the grounds of the state capitol in columbia. it will come down tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. tonight, our diana rocco looked into the flag's roots its place in hit recent its removal. >> reporter: weeks after nine people were gowned down inside a charleston, south carolina church, by a gun wielding man carrying the couldn't fet rat flag, south carolina's lawmakers will remove the emblem of the confederate army. >> just became part of the culture. part of what people who grew up, and there was a lot of denial that confederacy had anything to do with slavery. >> gregory irwin professor of

american military history at temple you've says the flag carried by the southern army during the civil war means different things to different people but one thing cannot be denied. >> confederacy was founded to protect slave you have row. there's no denying that. only slaves states left the union. >> you can't ignore heritage. you can't do it. it's not fair to the other side. >> reporter: george hoffman is the president of the bucks county civil war museum. it hangs original flags of the civil war and the nation's early years. >> that's original. the stains on it are bloodstains. >> reporter: hoffman says the flag will always have a place in history but whether it flys on state grounds is for lawmakers to decide. >> you can't erase the war much the war is going to be there. it was the largest most horrendous war in our history. >> did south carolina get it right here today. >> i think so. by taking this confederate symbol off the state capitol

>> len and one of his friends walking down this block wednesday coming back from a swimming pool when they saw 17-year-old rafik they asked to use his hand sanitizer but -- >> he started squirting it on me and him. when i was trying to rub it off he lit the lighter. >> reporter: throwing that lighter on to glenn setting his left side on fire. he was able to get it out and rushed home to his mom. >> i was appalled. i was appalled that anyone could even do this. >> he was treated for second degree burns and will be just fine thankfully not wearing a shirt when the sap ties sr. caught fire. >> with cotton and it and ignition like that it could have been much worse. >> people were arrest able to arrest the suspect a few hours after it happen. as to why he did what he did -- >> he's such a kid who thought it was a joke. thought it was funny. didn't realize the repercussions

repercussions. >> little sympathy from glenn's mother. >> this is my son. you hurt my son. you burnt hill. you put him on fire. >> facing felony aggravateed assault and arson and recklessly endangering another person. his bail is set at $100,000. matt rivers cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> philadelphia police have launched an intend investigation after a youtube video shows officers beating a suspect during an arrest. it's not known what happened before the cameras started rolling on locust avenue in east germantown april 3rd. it was a los angeles blog kerr who posted this video yesterday and identified the suspect as 22-year-old tyree carol. officers are seen in the video repeatedly punching and kicking carol whose lying face down. he was malt thely dug with assault and drug offense and. >> officers were injured attempt attempting to arrest that suspect. police toll us "as the officers stop the defendant he began to

fight witness officers biting one of the officers a total of three times thigh hand and arm. the defendant also bit another officer on the forearm during this arrest ". >> the entire incident is being reviewed now for any developmental violations. today u.s. officials revealed millions of people had information stolen in the largest breach of us government data ever. the sensitive information was stored at the office of personnel management. hackers stole 19.7 million social security numbers of americans who's underwent federal government background checks. another 1.8 million were taken from family and friends of those applicants. cyber brrr security analyst says china is the culprit and the counter intelligent risk is enormous. >> we'll have a long time to work on figuring out how to use it for recruitment. how to use it to maybe coerce people with relatives in china. they'll find a million ways to use this and none of them look good for the us.

specific details on the plots but he says he believes american lives were saved in the last four week the fbi has arrested more than 10 people who were allegedly inspired by isis online recruiting. pope francis make an unusual pit-stop on his south american tour. holy father stops at a burger king in bolivia. no he wasn't grabbing a bite to eat. he actually used the restaurant as a dressing room to swap his vestments. huge crowd gathered they did cheer pope on the way in and the way out. in the meantime we here in philadelphia are just about 80 days away from the pope's rifle. you can count on "eyewitness news" for continuing coverage of the papal visit to philadelphia on tv and also online cbsphilly.com. preparations underway for ticker tape parade honoring the world come champion usa women's soccer team. near new york city hall and all around the parade route scaffolding has gone up barricades are in place and rolls and roles of paper are being shredded they'll need a lot of that.

in clifton, new jersey, the parade floats that were carry the team have been in the work since tuesday night. crews are pulling in all nighter to get them just right for the parade which starts tomorrow at 11 a.m. and we'll take through "eyewitness news" will be in new york to bring you all the excitement first hand. you can tune in tomorrow to see the highlights including delran's own carli lloyd. >> tonight on the cbs3 health watch armed and fabulous. summer is the season for going sleeve less but for some women no amount of exercise will help them get those coveted toned arms. but there is help. health reporter stephanie stahl has that story. it's the spot on the arm that's long been a curse for women. >> it's a very tough area. please get rid of that flab. >> as much as i work out i can't firm it you have. >> 31-year-old neat at a says no amount of push ups have slimmed down her arms. >> when i'm dancing or moving my arms it does jiggle good now she's trying cosmetic procedure

>> i'm looking in the mirror and i'm looking at my arms and they're the worst thing in the world to me. >> she's taking the drastic surgery to tighten the skin like a tummy tuck for the arm. >> this is going to make me feel good because this is a struggle for me. >> arm surgery that removes fat and skin leaves scars. it could be expensive. there are other procedures to slim down heavy arms including liposuction and laser treatment. the topical creams you see advertisements doctors say they don't do much. i'm stephanie stahl cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> all right. very interesting. kate bilo is here. you've had a very busy night with the severe storms that moved through. now kind of looks like it's clearing out but man. there was some damage. >> it was a rough night and lots of damage left behind in the wake of these storms from berks county into delaware and even into portions of new jersey. we'll be watching these storms moving offshore through the overnight hours and then things improving quite a bit as we head through the weekend. i want to start you off here

with time lapsed video the storms moving through center city this is from go pro mounted at our studios you can see how dark it got very very quickly the buildings completely blotted out as that heavy rain came through. i was watching from the sky deck trying to broadcast live on per scope and showing people that you couldn't even see the buildings the rain was coming in the door. got me completely soaked and the winds were just how long in the city with lots of lightning and thunder. then eventually it did start to die down and start to die out a little bit which of course is good news. now here the buildings return again as the storms move on out and now things looking a whole more selled as we look live on skycam3 our rooftop cameras much the buildings lit up and the storms are out of here much that's good news. again it was a very rough night for many folks across the area. we had that school we talk about earlier completely demolished over portions of the berks county and a number of damage reports also around the plymouth meeting area around the norristown area and down into portions of delaware where numerous buildings were damaged as well. now these storms are out to sea

which is the best news of all. there are still a few lingering sprinkles in the wake of that mainline of storms but for most of us skies will be clearing overnight. and then much better news heads our way for friday and the weekend. the worst of it is offshore for now. temperatures still on the warm side and dew points are still in the 70s right now. but they will be dropping through the day tomorrow. you'll feel that reduction in humidity. right now it's 78 degrees at the airport. 75 in millville. and you're sitting at 76 if you're in reading watch to expect moving forward. as were go three the overnight hours the clouds will start to din minute initiate. tomorrow afternoon by 5:00 p.m., clouds and zahn really nice day. a little system will be to our south on saturday. what happens here, clouds and a couple of showers saturday morning. most of these are to the south. high pressure strong enough that a few clouds to invade the shore points and portions of delaware d.c. where the showers will be and clearing through the course of the day. high pressure does stay anchored overhead for sunday and sunday looks like another beautiful day day. so we're clearing out and heating up.

high pressure builds in saturday looks great it will be beautiful summer weekend. a little hot temperatures near 90 both saturday and sunday. but great weather to head down the shore. great weather to head to the pool. it's not going to be as humid as it was earlier this week either so you really can't beat sunshine and highs near 90. that's pretty close to average actually for the time of year. upper 80 we shall be. on monday a better chance for couple of thunderstorm in the afternoon or evening. as far as tonight is concerned heavy storms moving out and clearing. 73 degrees for your friday. a missing sun and clouds. nice and warm but again not as humid we're at 87 degrees for the high. let's jump nap that weekend shore cast a lot of folks headed down the shore. you heard earlier at 5:00 and 6:00 vittoria was down there telling us about a bunch of events you can do down the shore this weekend. 84 degrees. clouds on sunday saturday, sunday 86. >> look at all the sun. highs near 90 saturday, sunday looks like a great summer weekend. the quintessential warm sunny

they beat the sixers 84-78. yesterday the flyers prospects spent the day at the beach. today back on the ice. the flyers brass at the skate zone in voorhees for day least rookie development camp. flyers top it's prospects getting their first game of being a special player. no scrimmages just skating and struck. flyer head coach dave hextall was asked what he's looking to see out of his players. >> looking for detail. looking for ways to get better and things they can take with them and work on over the neck year as well. i think it's a real good learning week. and those are the things we're looking at in terms of detail of what guys are doing on the ice. >> he's already thinking about training camp and with the line combinations and defensive pairings will be. great tennis at wimbledon. everyone asking is going on with all the grunting. serena williams one way away
