was it an act of terror? four marines are shot dead at a military base in tennessee, and this morning it's still not known what set the gunman on his violent rampage. >> we the jury find the defendant james egan holmes guilty of murder in the first degree. >> is the death penalty next for the convicted colorado movie theater shooter? his fate is now in the hands of the same jury that found him guilty. you have absolutely no clothes on? >> and a controversial arrest. a police officer arrests a woman in mer home while she's wearing no clothes. this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, july 17th, 2015. good morning.

good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning it's still unclear why a gunman opened fire at two military sites in chattanooga, tennessee. four are dead and two servicemen and a police officer were hurt. mohammod youssuf abdulazeez was killed. police say he acted alone. so far he's not been linked to any terror group but they believe it was an act of terror. officials say he had numerous weapons. kenneth craig has more from chattanooga. >> reporter: and this is where the tragedy began here at the strip mall. you can see this morning it's the center of a agreeing memorial and a huge outpouring of support from this community. witnesses say a lone gunman in a silver mustang convertible drove up to this chattanooga armed

forces recruiting office and opened fire. a navy sailor was injured. he reappeared at a training facility seven miles away where he ran his car through gate and killed four marines and injured two others. mohammod youssuf abdulazeez died in a shoot outwith police. >> they arrived quickly and they actively and enthusiastically enkbajed this brazen criminal. >> reporter: authorities swarmed his house within minutes. he was born in kuwait but lived here in the chattanooga area. so far they do not know why he targeted the military with this assault. >> we'll look at his friends, families, anyone associated with him to look at a reason for why he conducted this attack. >> reporter: people who visited the memorial tried to make sense

of it. >> why would you hurt your own protectors. >> reporter: officials say abdulazeez was not on any terror list and the fbi was not aware of any terrorist leanings. and a law enforcement source told cbs news this individual was on a watch list a few years ago but was taken off following an investigation. overnight we learned more about abdulazeez. around organization that tracks extremist groups he blogged on monday life is short and bitter and muslims should not miss an opportunity to submit to allah. he earned an electrical engineering degree. he was arrested on a dui charge in april. following the attack in tennessee police beefed up security here in new york city. additional police officers were posted at recruitment centers and other locations, but police

say they have no specific information about a plot against the city. and this is the latest attack against military targets in this country. in 2009 one person was killed at a recruiting center in arkansas. that same year 13 died when an army officer opened fire at ft. hood. in 2013 12 people were attacked and killed in the washington navy yard and 16 were killed in an attack at foort hood in 2014. we'll have the very latest developments on the shooting in chattanooga coming up this morning. >> recovery efforts are under way in western illinois after a tornado caused extensive damage but no serious injuries. the tornado hit before dusk yesterday. part of a line of storms that swept through the area. the rural town of camera two hours west of chicago was hardest hit.

homes, trees and power lines were damaged. thousands were without power. and several gas leaks are reported. all gas and electric has been shut off and the town is closed to all traffic. and nows that a jury has convicted colorado theater gunman james holmes of murder it will have to decide whether he faces the death penalty or life in prison for kill 1g 2 people. the file phase of the trial begins wednesday. don champion reports. >> we the jury find the defendant james egan holmes guilty of murder in the first degree. >> reporter: james holmes showed no emotion as the colorado judge read the jury's verdict. it took about an hour for the guilty decisions on all 165 charges against him be read aloud. >> we're very happy this animal, this monster will never see the light of day. >> reporter: for the family members, the verdict does nothing to heal the pain. >> this isn't over for any of

those people. everyone else is going to walk away and it's over. it's another day at the job. but it's not for these families. >> reporter: the shooting happened july 20th 2012 during the premiere of the batman move "the dark knight rises." >> reporter: the prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. >> life imprisonment without parole or the death sentence. former president george h.w. bush is facing months of recovery. the 91-year-old is still in the hospital in maine after fracturing a bone in his neck after a fall in his summer home. doctors say the injury will take three to four months to heal. bush will have to wear a brace to immobilize his death.

and the death of a balm woman in a kournty jail has touched off a storm. she was found dead. police say she hanged herself but her family said it is extremely unlikely that she would commit suicide. zran's arrest appears to have been captured on camera the video uploaded to youtube. the 28-year-old was arrested friday following a traffic stop in waller county texas. police say she was uncooperative when she was pulled over for failing to signal. she was arrested for allegedly kicking one of the troopers. three days later she was dead. the texas rangers and fbi are investigating, and a prosecutor plans to present evidence to a grand jury. >> there is no video inside the cell where she was. we'd have to look at did anyone

a jetliner in washington state landed safely after being struck by a laser. they confirmed flight 66 from juno being lit up by a laser as it was heading for a landing at seattle-tacoma airport last night. the plane carried 70 passengers and five crew members. on wednesday night there were almost a dozen planes in newark liberty airport in new jersey. this morning australia remembers the victims of the malaysian airliner shot down over eastern ukraine one year ago today. 38 australian citizens and permanent residents were among the 298 people on board. residents and politicians gathered for a memorial service and the unveiling of a plaque set in soil from the crash site. a teenager in washington state is talking about her

on the "cbs this morning" "moneywatch," a new accident for one of google's self-driving cars. and amazon and walmart tally up their online showdown. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. google says that it's the first time one of its self-driving car us was in an accident that involved an injury. gookle said one of its self-driving suvs was rear-ended in southern california. three complained of minor whiplash but returned to work. the other cop plained of back and neck pain. this is the 14th accident in six year of google's self-driving program. the dow gained 70 points. the s&p finished 16 points higher. the nasdaq gained 64 points.

now that a tentative deal has been reached to bail out greece, greek banks will reopen on monday, but customers can't withdraw money except at atms. they can deposit cash and transfer funds. they're still limited to taking out 60 euros a day but greek authorities are working on a plan to allow a rollover so if they don't take out one day, they can take on 120 euros the next. amazon's super sale prime day may have gotten slammed on the net but it was a hit at the cash register. shoppers bought 16 8 items per second. amazon's worldwide order growth was four times what it was last year. ma'am zon said it's making prime day an annual event. walmart's christmas in july sale was also a hit. its online sales orders increased in triple digits. they canceled the reality

it was a scene reminiscent of the oscar winning movie "gravity." astronauts on the international space station took shelter for almost an hour in the soyuz capsule. they hungered down as a piece of space junk threatened to hit the station. luckily it passed without any harm. some military veterans say they're deeply concerned as they watch isis brutally grab territory in iraq and syria. so they will return to battle. chip reid spent time with one. >> reporter: in this tiny west virginia town nestled deep in the mountains, 35-year-old army veteran charlie kayton is preparing for war. he's about to return to iraq to fight against isis. what do people here think about the fact that you're going over
