the gunman. >> heart break horror in one philadelphia neighborhood after recent graduate of drexel university is found murdered inside her apartment. >> also, this morning learning more about the man the fbi says killed four marines and wounded three other people in chattanooga tennessee. that rampage is also having aim pact on security at military bases in our area. we will tell you how they're being affected and how philadelphia police are responding to. >> this being just careful as possible. good morning, it is friday, july 17th, i'm erika von tiehl. >> i'm nicole brewer. get being your day start wad check on traffic and weather together. never looked so lovely. >> good morning, i would say traffic things are heating up. but lovely wise, i think that katie is going to take it all. >> weather pattern has been real kind to us, obviously yesterday was fantastic. this morning you have a few clouds out there and it is starting to, you know, get just tad humid throughout the course of the day. but not to the point that it is uncomfortable at allment still really nice day unfolding for us here.

this while you can. because, eventually, with that heat humidity spiking and also couple of showers storms down the road here, this is the day to beat. enjoy it while you have got t vittoria? >> thank you so much. right now on the schuylkill expressway, this is little shocking. it is 6:02, and 76, looks very, very quiet. i'm wondering if people took the day off today to get early start on their weekend because usually at this time we are seeing massive delays on the schuylkill expressway right around city avenue. so pretty shocking, shot here, however, it is great news for you, because 76, wide open. making your commute throughout your western suburbs even around downtown philadelphia, it is still pretty nice out there. i can also say the same for 476, traveling, in either direction, this shot here, right around the mid-county toll plaza making your way down through to the schuylkill bypassing conshohocken, all goodment then even headed down to 95, blue route real fantastic speed censors everywhere, still, are high up into the 50's, and what's even more shocking, is that even at this time, 95, isn't all that bad.

"eyewitness news" reporter justin finch joins us at police headquarters with the latest on this investigation. just driving down the street, justin good morning. good morning, police say this could be a case of just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. the victim here, driving in north philadelphia, when she is struck by a bullet, in her back. and police say again this could have been just her driving, unknowingly into shoot-out involving drugs. just after 11:00 thursday night by the corner of 17th and diamond streets, the driver of this mazda three

felt a pain in her back. >> she is very, very fortunate. >> that pain was a gunshot wound. and she was taken to temple university hospital. >> although she was shot in the back, they say, she was able to move her arms, and her legs, and she was conscious. so it, doesn't appear that there is any paralysis. >> two other women, her friends, were also in the car. one up front the other in the back. >> the rear seat passengers very lucky. because the female was sitting on the passenger side in the rear seat h she been sitting on the driver side, she have been shot in the back. >> philadelphia police don't believe the car was a target. instead, they say it seems it was struck once by stray bullet while making a left onto 17th from susquehanna avenue. that's where the woman say they heard gunshots. >> the bullet pals dollars through the back seat, traveled to the front seat, went through the back of the front seat, striking our 32 year old driver. >> early into the investigation, police say they may have uncovered a motive. >> we found ten spent shell casings on the sidewalk at the intersection of 17th and

susquehanna. also found small bag containing several vials of what appears to be crack cocaine. so the shooting, or the shooter, may have been involved in some sort of drug-related altercation. >> and we know that now detective are talking to that woman's friends trying to get sense of what happened there late last night. they are also looking for surveillance video in hopes of making out the shooter as well, as the shooting. victim in this case, she is said to be okay. they say and on track for full recovery. live at police headquarters, justin finch cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> some good news there justin thanks. meanwhile, philadelphia police investigating the suspicious death of recent drexel university graduate. police say that victim identified as 27 year old jasmin write was found in her apartment on south 50th street west philadelphia. detective are investigating this, as apparent homicide. neighbors say they're shock by this and this usually is a

quiet community. >> it is hurting me, just to know it is right next-door. and to happen to that person, who didn't bother a soul. >> she was in her third floor apartment in the front bedroom, laying on the bed appears that she was severely beaten and possibly strangled. she was pronounced on the scene. >> she graduate in the june from drexel school of public health. if you know anything about that case, call police. >> authorities are not yet releasing the names of 4us marines killed in a shooting rampage in tennessee. the gunman though has been identified as 24 year old muhammad abdul the violence unfolds in the two locations recruiting center and a reserve center. 7 miles apart. cbs news correspondent kennel craig joins us now live in chattanooga with the very latest. kenneth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, of course where this deadly rampage began here at this strip mall yesterday morning. this morning, you can see, the scene is still roped off. authorities are still here in this parking lot including the fbi leading this

investigation. >> it has been a tragic, long, sad day. >> people in chattanooga came together in prayer late thursday night, after shooting rampage left four marines dead and three other people wounded earlier in the day. federal and local investigators are now looking into the background of the gunman for answers. >> we are checking every possible place that he could reside or could have resided where he shopped, where he went to school. >> using automatic rifle authorities say 24 year old muhammad opened fire on the marines at this military facility thursday before he was shot and killed by police. while the kuwait born gunman was not on the government's radar, a source tells cbs news his father was under investigation years ago for possible terror ties. that probe did not lead to arrest. >> at this point authorities aren't sure what motivated

abdul to first open fire here at this strip mall before driving seven smilings away and killing the marines, but they are looking into whether he was motivated or influenced by isis. >> you know isis will last several weeks has been putting out social media across the world, telling people that they will enjoy ten times the reward in the afterlife if they commit an act of jihad as a martyr for isis. >> authorities plan to analyze the gunman computer and phone records for clues. >> pointed out so far authorities are not publicly identified any of the victims this is just one of three crime scenes investigators will be processing today erika. >> all right, thank you so much. >> meantime, the defense department is increasing security at several federal facilities out after bun dance every caution. this the scene at the us naval support center in philadelphia on the 700 block of robbins avenue in lawncrest. philadelphia police have added patrol to military sites

>> she survived a plane crash that killed her grand parent, now she's telling her store. >> i autumn and her step grand parent were flying when their plane burst into flames flying in washington state. she spoke about the moment before the crash. >> we saw nothing and grandpa, he was kind of panicking, we couldn't get the gps to work. and then he said that he was just going to try to fly up. so he started to go up. and we just -- i just -- we didn't see anything until we saw trees. >> she said her grand parents were alive and screaming right after that crash and that she desperately tried to save them but there was just too much fire. she walked down a steep mountainside and got help two days later. >> doctors say it will take

"eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo live for us in the cbs-3 sat center to pick up this story. hey, jan? >> good morning, these two south jersey parents are facing pretty serious charges today. they got into this all-out brawl earlier this week, and it appears that this dispute stemmed from some sort of argument they were having about their daughters' softball team. >> two south jersey men are

about to find themselves locked in a knock-down drag out fistfight. this was the scene that unfolded wednesday night, just outside of the opening ceremony for youth softball tournament in saulsbury marylandment it was captured by an eyewitness, and post today social media. this video has now gone viral. garner and close to 150,000 views. >> i just saw two caucasion males going at it. so i went over there and recorded it, i didn't think it was going to go far. >> but the brawl ended in blood. one man badly beaten and both in cuffs. the sheriff's offers has identified the menace michael barbella of ventnor and michael john duffy of mays landing, new jersey, officials say barbella has sent text messages earlier in the day challenging did you have toy a fight. the argument they say stemmed from approve just dispute. investigators say barbella traveled to sals burr toy confront duffy and other parent from softball team when this fight broke out. courage washington was thereto capture it but had no intention of stepping in.

connected. >> the latest happened just before 1:00 yesterday afternoon at the citizens bank in a crowded shoprite on the 1100 block of roosevelt boulevard in somerton. police say that the robber was a person dressed in full female muslim clothing. fbi spokesman tells "eyewitness news", they believe this is connected to a string of similar robberies in the northeast. >> this concerns us, obviously, anybody in such short periods of time since the beginning of june. this many robberies although, weapon has not been displayed she threatens violence. >> the fbi says the robber got away in a dark colored suv. >> philadelphia police are looking for this man who they say broke into the betsy ross house courtyard. surveillance video shows him climbing over the gate there and then off camera, police say, he broke into a vender's freezer and took several boxings of food. he then climbs back over that gate, and takes off. >> the philadelphia housing authority is impose ago smoking ban. this ban affecting 80,000 resident, in public housing start august 5th. the new rule prohibit smoking in all homes and public
