on the schuylkill river, it is dangerously hot outside, and it is getting worse, it is a day unlike any other this summer the heat is on. good afternoon i'm pat ciarrocchi. >> i'm erika von tiehl. now, heat advisories are in effect excessive heat warning has been issued for philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. we want to check in with katie out on the skydeck, and we have to get you inside the ac soon. how does it feel right snow. >> it is a very hot afternoon as you can imagine here, temperatures are already cracking the 09 degrees mark, quite few locations, feels even worse when you factor in the humidity, so you want to just have common sense smart ways to get around that. we've all got to go about our day, we end stand that, but seek out the cool air seek out hydration whenever you need to, listen to your body, guys. let's look where those excessive heat warnings and heat advisories are posted, and it is really where un, you know everyone has either advisory or warning in effect here, so you have to be careful, region wide, no one's immune from this, looking at our feels-like values, dover

stands out like a sore thumb look at that, it already feels like it is flirting with triple digit heat right now feeling like 94 at philadelphia international airport, and so this is perfect pool weather but you got to find a way to cool off if you don't have a pool near you, again, seek out the air-conditioning, storm scan3 thankfully, pretty quiet. nothing but blue skies overhead. but, again as these temperatures continue their climb, with that strong, sun and the building humidity, it is going to be a scorcher of an afternoon. now, don't let these icons scare you off too much. we are looking at the possibility after isolated key word isolated shower perhaps rumble every thunder but frankly, welcome it at this point, because it means anything that rolls through would help cool you down, at least briefly. but the bottom line and the big story in the weather headline is it is hot out here, be careful, if you must be outside. we send it back into you guys. >> katie, thank you because of this dangerous heat, the philadelphia international airport corporation for aging has a hotline in place for anyone who has questions. city health department nurses can get answers about how to

"eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson is live for us in septa headquarters with details on today's problems, and what a rough day it is for septa. steve? >> reporter: it is a rough day, pat. this is the huge deal. because even if you are coming to see the pope during the world meeting of families, in late september even if you're not coming to see the pope, if you're taking the regional rails, your regional rail customer, this is the only way to get into town. so this is access for hundreds of thousands of people and this morning that access failed. so about an hour ago we went into septa headquarters to ask

how in the world could this happen? papal pass problems. >> so what we decided to do is to suspend the site until further notice. >> septa officials now suspending sales for the one-day regional rail passage that would allow commuters to travel into town, during the pope's visit to philadelphia in late september. the problem? septa officials relied on website as the only method to buy the passage. the website launched this morning and immediately started failing preventing customers from making transactions. septa says, it is volume. >> and we were overwelmed by the number of people who tried to access the site. and the site has failed. >> septa spokesperson jerry williams says over the weekend technicians stress tested hundreds of thousands of visits to the site. when it launched at 9:00 a.m. monday morning that number international event and how could they miscalculate the interest? >> how could you not account for the amount of people

interested in the vital passes in. >> actually septa's it department and the independent contractors that we're working with spent all weekend, and i mean at one point they were flooding the system with up to 1700 hits per second, and we also had up to, and this is testing mode, 900,000 visits to our site. and it worked. there morning it did not. >> still for those two days, september 25th and 27th, septa was making available some 350,000 passes, only few actually went through and sold this morning so there is still an opportunity for most customers to get those passes, williams and septa says, they'll announce when that next opportunity will be at some point tomorrow. of course we will be there to bring you the latest. we also spent some time with septa's social media team. you have to see how they react

in a crisis like this, more from them coming up on later additions of "eyewitness news", for now live in center city, steve patterson cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> important information all the way around steve thanks very much. several people were rushed to the hospital this morning after a fire department ambulance and mini-van collided in north philadelphia. the impact of that crash knocked the ambulance on it side. "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch has the story. >> reporter: the aftermath of an accident, toyota mini-van, stopped in its tracks, as front end buckled and bent. then that medic unit sitting on its side, the two included at hunting park avenue and fox street. >> few feet away, an emt worker now patient placed onto gorney into the care of his peers, one of two emt's caring pain don't hospital. food cart operator says he was a witness. >> it was, yes old lady. she was crying. and she said my god. >> he heard the impact of that crash, and that's when he and

group of bystanders got together crossed the street, to the rec scene, did what they could to help. deputy fire commissioner jesse wilson sets the scene. >> at approximately 7:39, one of our medics units was traveling eastbound on hunting park avenue, it was struck by a passenger vehicle civilian vehicle, traveling northbound on fox street. >> what was it like for you to hear about the car crash? were you very afraid? >> it made me scared. >> five of the loved ones were in that toy oath, a her brother, she said, was driving, along with her mother, five year old neice toddler neice, nephew. she also has an idea where they were headed. >> they had summer school. >> instead, says all five were taken to einstein medical center and should be okay. witnesses say the medic aoun hit a sirens and lights on. the firefighters call this reminder to follow the rules of the road. >> whenever you see an emergency response vehicle whenever you hear an emergency response vehicle to pull over

and allow safe passage. >> justin finch cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> recovery crews continue their search for a missing swimmer in the delaware river. authorities say the man went into the river near the bristol war of yesterday and never resurfaced. marine aoun fritz bucks county, burlington county, and the new jersey state police, all took part in that search effort. meanwhile, authorities in burlington, new jersey have yet to release the identity of another swimmer whose body was pulled from the delaware river yesterday. witnesses say that man disappeared while trying to swim to a nearby island around 7:00 last night. the state police marine unit recovered the man's bod bye two hours later. >> well, new details on the allegations against comedian bill cosby. cosby's attorney is saying the weekends release of court documents is one side. patrick o'connor tells the philadelphia inquire their cosby is being treated unfairly the 2005 deposition was published by the new york times over the weekends, and in it cosby describes an

encounter with a woman as quote between permission and rejection. cosby is not charged with any crimes though he is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting dozens of women over four decades. more than two years after the center city building collapse, one of the men accuse in the that deadly accident could plead guilty this week. sources close to the case are telling cbs-3 that the crane operator, sean benchop, may plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter at a hearing tomorrow morning. six people died on june the 20th or rather, in june of 2013 when a brick wall being demolished fell on to the roof of a salvation army thrift store. blood tests showed that benchop had marijuana and prescription narcotics in his system the day of the accident. benchop faces six counts of third degree murder which carry potential life sentence. well, coming up on cbs-3 "eyewitness news" at noon, it is a new era as cuba raises the flag at it embassy in washington d.c. more ahead on the beginning of

chance at the title he sensed something behind him. >> all the sudden i felt started getting pulled under water, and then the thing came up, and i was on my board and it was like right there i saw like the whole thing just flashing around, but i was getting dragged under bay my leg rudder. >> fanning, hidden from the cameras by a wave, panicked to punch the shark on the back. >> drag me underwater, and then, all right just screaming and screaming and screaming. >> fanning waived to get to safety. but instead his friend, and rival, swam toward him. >> so i got knocked off his board, and then like a little wave popped up. i was like oh, he's gone. he's gone under. i felt like i couldn't get there quick enough. >> today we met with a calmer fanning. >> are you going to go back and surround in. >> i'll surf again for sure.

>> sure, sure. and i appreciate. that will but i think remember, listen to your boyde, when dealing with this heat if your body telling you something, i need to slow down, night to get inside to school spot, listen to it. this is the heat we get every day. we get days like this every summer. as long as you're smart about it, we get through t but common sense and sometimes you need reminder, be hon else. so go on out there. start things off by talking heat safety. be smart about it, guys. stay out of the direct sunlight, you don't want to be doing the most strenuous activities like taking your typical jog at high noon, wear light colored clothing if you must go out, we understand it, landscapers, construction workers, you're stuck you have got to be out in this. so be smart about it, drink lot of water water is the beverage of choice, we prefer that but stay nice and hydrated. beach is a good place to try to get some relief, as women. i think they were doing like surf lesson or something i just saw dozens of surfers coming off the beach here at margate. but yes, you can see the whole shore line basically

dotted with folks that are out trying to break get little break from the heat here. but you may not find too much of a break. so, take it easy. sun block required, lot of fluids, and you'll be just fine. of course, seek the air conditioner if you need it. the other thing we have to mention, air quality less than ideal here, too region wide, air quality alert for the rest of the day. if you fall into sensitive categories kids, elderly respiratory illnesses, you have got asthma, any casino of heart condition, just be smart about it. you know? check on your neighbors check on the elderly do all of those good samaritan type of things we'll ought get through it. lower the dew point drier the air, as soon as you get past 65 degrees on dew point, it is starting to feel sweltering, and dover is winning the battle here for worse in terms of humidity, worse in terms of feels like value. we have two separate fronts. you can see one sort of dropping south another in its wake, neither of those front has a lot of umf to it, so

won't see too much of a break in the heat necessarily in the days ahead. humidity does start to go away. phillies back in town against the rays. there will be very isolated shower or storm around. i think they'll get the game in however. but i wouldn't juan to be the poor folks out there on the actual grounds because it will be really sweltering here tonight. feels like sweltering kind of game. ninety-three the expected high tomorrow, still humid still tracking shower, scattered thunderstorm, then high pressure builds in, even though still summer, you know, late july, so mid upper 80s nothing atypical, at least we lose the humidity. so it starts to feel so much better, as soon as we hit wednesday. >> makes such a difference. >> really does. >> katie, thank you. coming up next at noon, we head out to the links. >> we will show you what's happening at the final round play at the british open, now called the open championship. we'll have to get used to that right after this.
