coming from the caddie. peter: that's the information a player needs to commit to a shot like this. he's had a hard time doing it. ian: as long as you're committed, once you're over it, don't get into your preshot unless you are committed a hundred%. -- percent. >> stay over there. come down. jim: he tucked it. gets off the side of the slope in the sand. we'll see if he'll be able to play that ticklish little shot as well as putnam did just a short while ago. got up and down for birdie. again, tomorrow "the faldo series," you don't want to miss this special. how nick works with young golfers spreading the love and the message of the game around the world. and then we're back here at 3:00 eastern time for the rbc canadian open.

and tonight on cbs "ncis: los angeles," scorpion," and "48 hours" all headed your way. can't imagine what it's going to be like to sleep on the lead tonight for david hearn. this country has been longing for this moment for so long. ian: just adds to the pressure of wanting to win it so badly for yourself, but knowing that everyone out there is behind you. mike weir might give him some advice tonight about how he handled it when vijay beat him in the playoff years ago.
6:02 pm
jim: and again he hails from programford, ontario which is just -- bramford, which is just southwest of glen abbey. this is a beautiful little town here. you have to go past burlington and hamilton and you find yourself not only in the hometown of wayne gretzky but the hometown of david hearn and they grew up, again just a few doors apart on the same street with the great one. trust me, that little -- you know david's a little younger, but he'll have his own nickname if he's able to pull this one off tomorrow. ian: amazing. when you think 60 years since pat fletcher, last canadian won in 1954.
6:03 pm
don't let it get you down, though. just soak it all in, enjoy it, keep smiling waving to the crowds and use their energy. jim: a lot of things can happen out of that bunker when you short side it. there's a backdrop to it. you've got water across the way. peter: the worst part about all that jim is he has a pretty significant downhill lie. that's going to make this shot even more of a problem. jim: speaking of problems here, peter, how aggressive will johnson be with this one? peter: i think he's looking at no place but putting it in the bunker and try to get it up and down. ian: try to get it on the upslope of the bunker. peter: yes. jim: i don't -- peter: that was what he was trying to do.
6:04 pm
the crowd may have mobile phoned, but that was his -- moaned, but that was his wish. he's going to have a slightly level to maybe downward lie as well. join hearn will be away, i believe, here. peter: he'll be next to play. he's going to have to be really, really careful with this one. this could get away from him like the one on 17 did. it's a similar if not shorter shot. but it's very similar. ian: the lie looks quite good. even though, as you said, peter it's slight downslope. but it's a clean lie. peter: yeah, it is. i mean, if he tries to really open the blade and make a full hard swing and put a swing on it, the miss becomes more exadge rated. depends on what he wants to chew off. [captioning funded by cbs sports division]
6:05 pm
[captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. visit ncicap.org] choirp jim: an uphill putt just outside of 10 feet. ian: peter i believe he would have accepted that. if somebody offered him the 10 footer he would have taken it. well done. those bags are cool. jim: now wagner with the up slope here, peter would help him. peter: not really. it's going to go -- oh, but the flagstick will help you! you were right again jim. jim: what's that i'm talking about, peter. peter: beautiful shot tap-in par.
6:06 pm
jim: even par round at 72 for johnson, who was the runner-up at houston this year, lost in the playoff to j.b. holmes. jordan spieth, also in that playoff. we didn't waste any -- he didn't waste any time, either, did he. got right in there and took aim. ian: could have gone in for the same money too. jim: oh, yeah. look at david rooting for him. ian: yeah. they've had a good day. they've been quite chatty. jim: be nice for hearn peter to not finish 5-5 here when you think most of the field is finishing 4-4. peter: this is going to make his dinner taste a whole lot better. it's amazing out here, working with this gallery -- walking with this gallery. while they're extremely
6:07 pm
respectful they're really knowledgeable. there's nobody pulling for johnson wagner. everyone out here is for david hearn, as well they should be. jim: well, regardless of the outcome here in this putt, he'll be in the company tomorrow of bubba watson. may be the final pairing. bubba going for his second win in a month's time and a third of the season. and hearn who has twice come close in his career, losing the playoffs most recently just three weeks ago at the greenbrier. but it's more than just about winning for the first time. it would be for a whole nation. here's the birdie attempt.
6:08 pm
ian: just a fraction too firm to take that last little bit of right break. solid stroke and putt, though. didn't sort of waiver over it or try and lag it in. it was leading strokes gained the first two rounds. in putting of course. jim: this for the two-shot lead heading to round four. goes in par. ian: a nice little test as well. well done. jim: yes it was. can't wait to see what happens
6:09 pm
