♪ good afternoon i'm erika von tiehl. >> i'm pat chiarocchi we begin this noon with breaking us congressman shack at a fattah of philadelphia is named in a 29 count indictment on federal charges and conspiracy and racketeering much eighths stunning investigative case of alleged political fraud and corruption that began seven years ago. >> "eyewitness news" reporter syma choudhry joins us at the federal building where those charges were announced win last hour. syma? >> reporter: that's right. stunning is great word to use in this case involving allegations

of political corruption. now the indictment against congressman shack at a fattah and four of his associate social security filled with several allegations that we do have video of the congressman with president obama this is recent video. now the 29 count indictment stems from several alleged schemes circling around misappropriateing federal charitable and campaign funds. officials say one of the schemes involves borrowing millions dollars from a wealthy supporter for his failed mayoral campaign back in 2007. the indictment accuses fattah for paying some of that money back by using money and federal grants from a non-profit charity he founded founded and controls. another alleged scheme includes using campaign money to pay off his son's student loans from 2007 to 2011 totaling about $23,000. now this is what officials said at the press conference just moments ago. >> the public expects their elected officials to act with

honest teen integrity. the public does not expect their elected officials to misuse campaign funds misappropriate government funds accept bribes or commit bank fraud. these type of criminal acts be tray the public trust and undermine faith in government. >> public corruption takes a particularly heavy toll because it really undermines people's basic belief that our elected leaders, their elected leaders are committed to serving the public interests. not to lining their own pockets. >> reporter: and this 85 page indictment maps out the alleged schemes includes other charges such as racketeering, conspiracy conspiracy, money laundering and bank fraud. now erika and pat we'll have much more on this later starting at 5:00 o'clock on cbs3. now i'll send it back to you. >> syma, thanks very much. as those allegations have been made during the investigation over the last years congressman fattah denied any wrongdoing. we have not heard from him as yet. we will be following reaction to today's indictments later today on it witness news. the other big story this

noon extreme heat soon gobbing to an issue today. want to get right over to kate. it's feeling like over 100 degrees. it feels like triple digits in some spots. it will be a story through the rest of the todayalong i-95 and the immediate vicinity that's where we've got the excess tiff heat warnings that are currently now in effect. they have taken effect here as of noon but now the weather service has since extended that excessive heat warning to last us until 6:00 p.m. on thursday. so while you'll have cooler once the sun goes down we'll continue to see that warning remain neck until tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. quickly looking at storm scan3 a couple of little pop up showers have fired up here across central and southern delaware. so if you're maybe headed to the delaware beaches or traveling route 1, for example keep it in mind you might want to damp road here and there. here's look at the excessive heat warning we just mentioned. heat index values around 100 degrees for again arc small sliver of the delaware valley regardless though thousands of

people are effected by that. your actual air temperature at 90 in trenton flirting with it right now in philadelphia. but it does feel hotter. we'll give you a better sense of those feels like values as the show progresses but today's daytime expected to reach 95. typically we're only at 87. not totally out of the question to hit these values obviously. but it is going to be a very steamy afternoon. so take care out there. pat, back to you. >> katie, thanks very much. we have breaking news for you also a shooting at delaware park at the race track sending one person to the hospital. chopper three over the scene in wilmington around 9:00 o'clock this morning. the victim was found shot in the abdomen and rushed to christiana hospital. his condition is not known at this time. also breaking right now a woman allegedly involved in a fatal hit-and-run has surrender to do authorities. "eyewitness news" cameras rolling here as 27-year-old shaneeka mason of sharon hill walk out of the accident investigation division. four-year-old abdul wilson died back in april when a black suv struck him on the 1600 block of

south 57th street. the driver stopped briefly after hitting the child then drove away running over him again. a 46-year-old man had a leg amputated after he was hit hit and stuck underneath a csx freight train in bustleton earlier this morning. it happened around 3am. it took emergency crews two hours to free that man. he's now stable we're told at aria torresdale hospital. it's still not clear though why the man was on the train tracks at the time. >> philadelphia police are hoping that you can help identify this gunman who robbed a 7eleven in the lawndale section of northeast philadelphia. surveillance video shows the man pulled a very large gun and demanded money from the clerk at the store in the 6600 block of rising sun avenue about 1:30 yesterday morning. if you recognize the suspect we ask you to call the police. we are now getting a better idea today of a modern medical first performed right here in

philadelphia. >> cbs3 health reporter stephanie stahl joins us now with more an young boy's double hand transplant the first of its kind stephanie. >> world first right here in philadelphia. today that young man is back in rehab at children's hospital where he had the transplant a few weeks ago. a medical milestone for a very special little boy. (applause). >> eight-year-old zion harvey from baltimore is the first child in the world to have a double hand transplant. >> i just want to say this. never give up on your dreams. it will come true. >> reporter: zion had a sepsis infection when he was two. forcing doctors to amputate his arms and legs to save his life. >> high grandmother says i'm smarter than a lot of grown ups. >> this video from children's hospital shows a charming little boy who got around on prosthetic legs and managed to do a lot with his limitations. >> some of my classmates they don't mean the things -- mean things to me, but it just slips out. >> reporter: after months of planning a donor was found

through gift of life an unidentified child a team of 40 at children's hospital operated for 10 hours. >> you can see the hand right here starting to pink up. >> i think the difficulty finding a family who has the courage tore linger the arms of a child who just died and give hope and life and quality of life to a child who is still living. >> reporter: for zion whose already starting hand therapy he wanted to give special shout out to his family. >> i wanted to say thank you for helping me do this. i really wanted them to feel appreciated, too. >> is he precious? >> oh, my goodness. i'm crying. >> so precious. one more thing about this little boy. he had a kidney transplant donated from his mom four years ago. so he was already on anti rejection drugs which made him especially good candidate for this hand transplant. >> what was interesting to see whether he can move his hands and whether he can feel his hands. what's the situation with that stephanie. >> he's in rehab slowly getting

calling deflate-gate. >> one day after the nfl upheld its four game suspension the quarterback is fighting back. today he took to social media to troy to clear his name. cbs news correspondent kenneth craig has the latest. >> reporter: tom brady still insists he did nothing wrong. on facebook the patriots quarterback responded to the nfl's claim that he deliberately destroyed his cell phone wiping out text messages connected to deflate-gate. brady said he replaced his broken phone after my attorneys made it clear to the nfl that my actual phone device would not be subjected to investigation. he went on to say we even contacted the phone company to see if there was any possible way we could retrieve any or all of the actual text message messages. patriots owner expected the nfl to row dues brady's suspension and regrets not fighting the team's million dollar fine. >> the league still has no hard evidence of anybody doing anything to tamper with the psi

this seems to be date we were waiting for it to get really saysly hot. >> be careful. >> not looking forward to but having to deal with regardless and looking ahead to and planning for it. this is really the hottest day i would say in terms of you factor in not just the heat but also the actual humidity here, too. it actually already feels like it's into the triple digits in a couple of spots here. flirting with that already in few spots. so we're just at noon and still got some time to kill here. let's take look outside at storm scan3. the reason he want to show you this region wide zoom you see those speckles of green firing up over the virginias just a little hint of activity on the radar even extending into portions of maryland and delaware right now. so if you are per happen traveling through delaware we mentioned this earlier in the show you might see a quick shower don't be surprised by that but generally rest of the us are dry. look at the well defined occur cher on this guy. serious storm system brewing across the central canadian

prairie right now. trailing frontal boundary with that not really showing too much precipitation right now but this is actually the frontal boundary going to help wipe away the humidity for our area. not the heat rather the humidity. we'll explain. let's get you through the severe weather threat that comes with this not for today rather this is for tomorrow. that front needs some time before it's going get here. at this point the storm prediction center only has us in marginal risk for stronger thunderstorms. in other words, lowest level of totem pole, however that might get upgradeed to a slight risk we'll have to keep an eye on it regardless any storms that ignite tomorrow are generally in the second half of the day and they're primary concerns will be downpours gusty wind, perhaps some frequent lightning we'll keep an eye on that. here we go when you start to see magentas showing up on the map you know it's hot outside. feeling like the century mark in dover, delaware. feeling like our projected daytime high already here in philadelphia. and much like the 90s almost everywhere else. in addition to the excessive heat warning we talked about air quality is also an issue. most of the delaware valley is

included here and it's specific specifically for un -- unhealthy for sensitive groups so you fall into the category of kids, the elderly, maybe you suffer from respiratory illnesses asthma, something like that, this is one of those days that's going to bother you. so be prepared for that. seek out the air-conditioning when you can. but if you're trig to beat the heat and you really want to get outside a good placing to look at the folks out here beach patrol headquarters definitely pit putting a lot of umbrellas up as you can understand it. it is a hot afternoon even at the area beaches but certainly the best place to head if you are trying to beat the heat or find a pool near you that's good place to go, too. mostly sunny at the beaches in the meantime. there is the moderate risk for rip currents. keep that in mind. we always say swim near the lifeguards today it's important to do so. still very soupy tomorrow. but then those storms come through. it's still hot from friday and i don't know but at least the humidity gets wiped clean at least for a short time. >> something to look forward to in that regard.

she happens to meet brook who's this, you know, personification of the city. she's exciting and she's loud and she's um, talented and a hustler and then they have this like real adventure together. >> yeah. >> it's true. brook is like this larger than life person who -- she's every third thing she says sounds like a lie. you're never really sure where you stand with her. some of it's real so you never know. they're both really a great characters, and it was really lola is such a great act tess and so fun to make it we only have good feelings around it when we watch it we're just like look at us. >> i love the relationship between you two characters. you typically only see that with men in a film. was that important when you were writing this as well? >> yeah. we had written another film together called francis about a different kind of female friendship and when we set out

to write this one we really wanted to make two female characters at the center of it and what happens to their relationship be the central question. >> oftentimes in film like this boyfriends become really pivotal. >> yes. >> boyfriends are part of this but not at the core. >> no. >> so how did you play that? how did that work for you lola. >> very easy to play. i've experienced so many relationships with other women who i think are so magnetic and you just want to be around and they make you want to be like a better person and i think friendships can be nuance i was really happy to get a chance to do that in a movie. >> you seem to go back and forth playing a mentor brooks the more standard mentor. but you are able to help her watch was that like having that relationship between the characters? >> um, well, you know, we wanted it to be -- we wanted it to kind of switch throughout the course of the film. brook really thinks she's teaching trace cease all these lifeless sons and she knows more and then they do end up kind of, not totally switching roles but
