news" for monday, august 3rd, 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. wildfires are forcing thousands of families from their homes in california this morning. crews are battling 21 large wildfires throughout the state. the largest is the rocky fire raging near lower lake about 100 miles north of san francisco. that wild fire exploded in size sunday growing to at least 84 square miles. air tankers are dousing the flames from above. lamore abrams of our sacramento affiliate kobr reports. >> reporter: fast-moving flames continues raging through thousands of acres of dry brush. tripling in size in just two days. just how much more the rocky fire will burn is a question no one has an answer to. >> the fire behavior that we're seeing because of the dry vegetation is -- it's historic.

>> reporter: steve kaufman is one of more than 2,000 firefighters from around the state on the fire line, but even with the constant water drops overhead, it just keeps raging. >> we haven't seen fire really grow in that magnitude in that short of an amount of time. >> reporter: we're in yellow county on the back end of this fire and you can see these flames slowly back down this hillside. >> dry or no dry, this is fire country. >> reporter: lynn borgoletti lives on the yolo side of the fire. she hasn't evacuated yet but realizes she may need to. >> we're kind of used to. >> reporter: not everyone is used to it. it's scorching new territory. 12,000 people under some kind of evacuation order and for many it's a matter of get in the car and go. >> terrifying but you just go and get everything you can, take care of your animals and do what you can to get out of here. >> reporter: and this is the case throughout northern california. road closures. sheriff's deputies turning people around as firefighters continue battling these

fast-moving flames. in calusa california, lamore air brams, cbs news. one man was killed and several others hurt when a fast-moving storm blue over a tent. they had taken cover under the tent to escape from hail and rain and that's when the high winds ripped it from its moorings and tossed it into the crowd. >> the tent flew off into the sky and the fence flew off and everybody was on the floor and you heard screaming and crying. >> the storm threw chairs tables and other debris onto the grass. organizers canceled the remainder of the festival. storms interrupted the lowell la pa lose za festival in grant part. 89,000 music fans were safely evacuated and then let back in a short time later but organizers eventually ended the festival early after another wave of storms swept in. heavy rain brought flash

flooding to the tampa, florida, area. the region broke rainfall records saturday and got more sunday. swollen creeks overflowed turning creeks into rivers. some drivers abandoned their cars on inundated roads. flood warnings remain in effect. it is the start of one of the most anticipated weeks in recent political memory. on thursday ten candidates in the crowded republican presidential race will meet up for the first debate and tonight we get a preview when 14 of the gop contenders share a stage in new hampshire. one candidate who will not be there is donald trump. he finds himself at the top of another poll out this weekend. trump's early success has put other candidates into attack mode, but the billionaire is sticking to his message. >> i'm not a debater. i don't stand up and debate like these politicians. they're all talk, no action. all they do their whole life is debate. >> reporter: donald trump continued to draw differences between himself and other gop

candidates on sunday. the real estate mogul called in to cbs's face the nation and said he fights hard to pay as little in taxes as possible. >> i'll be probably the first candidate in the history of politics within this country to say, i try, and like every -- by the way, like every single taxpayer out there, i try to pay as little tax as possible. >> reporter: meanwhile, trump's opponents took aim. >> donald trump wants to be the commander in chief of the united states and he does not know that it is the federal government's responsibility to secure the border. >> anybody can do well for a month in this business especially if you have talent and you have personality. >> when i'm in the first debate which is the happy hour debate at 5:00 start drinking. by 9:00 donald may make sense to you if you drink enough. >> reporter: while the gop slug fest is set to hit a fever pitch this week there could be a big shakeup on the democratic side. signs are pointing toward a possible run by joe biden, a

candidacy by the sitting vice president would pose an unexpected obstacle for hillary clinton's campaign. it comes as clinton's campaign is spending $2 million on television ads in new hampshire and iowa. >> after law school she could have gone to a big firm but instead went to work for the children's defense fund. >> reporter: but biden would face his own challenges as a candidate. >> he's polling around third place in polls against hillary clinton. there's a lot of talk about hillary's unfavorables going up in recent weeks, but most democrats are still very enthusiastic about hillary clinton so where biden fits into all of this remains to be seen. >> coming up on cbs this morning, republican strategist and cbs news contributor frank luntz sizes up thursday's gop debate. the senate votes today on a bill that would bar federal aid for planned parenthood. the bill follows a series of videos by anti-abortion

activists. they show them discussing how they provide feet tall tissue to researchers. however, the bill is unlikely to get the 60 votes needed to advance. planned parenthood receives more than half a billion dollars of taxpayer money each year. tragedy strikes on a minor league baseball field in kansas. a 9-year-old bat boy died sunday after being accidentally hit in the head by a bat. it happened during a game saturday near wichita. he was struck by a follow-through swing near the on deck circle. one of the umpires provided emergency aid until the ambulance arrived. the game was part of the national baseball congress world series. and this morning experts in france are preparing to investigate the section of airplane wing thought to be from malaysia flight -- malaysia airlines, rather, flight 370. the search for debris is expanding beyond reunion island where it washed up last week.

jonathan bigliotti is there. >> reporter: they are starting in a local grassroots search. local police were seen on the beach pulling from the ocean what was believed to be scraps from an airplane. turned out to be scraps from a metal ladder. that flaperon was taken to france on saturday. an investigation will be conducted on wednesday. already boeing officials say without a doubt this piece is from one of their 777s. mh 370 the only missing 777 in the world. malaysian authorities have asked other territories to assist them with their search on the island. jonathan vig gli ott at this cbs news. the hunt for a cop killer. a suspect is named in the murder of an officer in memphis. later, a second doctor is under investigation for an illegal lion hunt. this is the "cbs morning news." i'm good.

when you look at this individual, you're looking at a coward. he's a coward. you gun down you murder a police officer for less than 2 grams of marijuana. >> a manhunt is on in memphis, tennessee, for termaine termaine willborn, the man wanted in the death of a police officer. officials say officer shawn bolton was shot and killed after interrupting a drug transaction saturday. a small amount of marijuana involved would have carried a misdemeanor charge. willborn had been out on supervised release after being convicted of a bank robbery. he is considered armed and dangerous. this morning baltimore police are getting federal help to deal with a wave of violence. fbi and other special agents are embedding with homicide detectives. july was the deadliest month in decades. 45 people were killed. the most in a month since 1972

when the city had far more residents. the fbi is asking for help solving two new mexico church explosion sz. investigators are working to see who set devices outside a church in lass crews sis. the explosions caused only minor damage and no one was hurt. president obama today plans to announce unprecedented steps to combat climate change. the president released a video to preview what he calls the final version of america's clean power plan. he says it's the biggest, most important step we've ever taken to battle climate change. >> we limit the amount of toxic chemicals like mercury, sulfur and arsenic in our air and water and we're better off for it but existing power plants can dump harmful amounts of carbon into the air we breathe.

>> under the new rules they'll have to cut their carbon emission by 32% over the next 15 years. another doctor is accused of illegally killing a lion in zimbabwe. pennsylvanian doctor killed a lion in february. this follows the outcry over a minnesota dentist who killed a well-known lion named cecil. so far zimbabwe has not asked for sesky to be extradited. despite some reports that he had been killed cecil's brother lion jericho is still alive. wildlife officials say jericho has taken over the pride of lions after cecil's death and is looking at cecil's death. dozens of pictures were displayed on the empire state building. it was intended to spark conversation about mass extinctions and promote a

on the cbs "moneywatch," a recall and new beats by dr. dre. hannah daniels is live from the new york stock exchange. >> here on wall street investors will be watching as greece moves another step back from its phi financial crisis today. for the first time in weeks the athens stock market is open. talks will continue with creditors on austerity measures and reforms required for a third bailout. another crowd of earnings reports this week may impact stock prices. last week the dow gained 127 points. the s&p was at 25. the nasdaq rose 42 points. kraft is recalling 36,000 cases of cheese. the individually wrapped cheese singles may present a choking hazard. the company says a thin strip of the packaging film could remain

stuck to the cheese slice even after the wrapper has been removed. customers should return the package to the store for an exchange or a refund. at the weekend box office mission impossible rogue nation flew straight to number one. the film stars tom cruise. it earned $56 million for the top slot. "vacation" was in second place with $14 million in ticket sales and "ant man" fell to third place. and dr. dre's releasing his first new album in more than 15 years this week. the rapper says a sound track called "compton" will be out on friday. it's his first album since 1990. dr. dre also revealed that he's shelved his long-awaited album called "detox." he said the record wasn't that good. >> there are probably kids wearing his headphones that don't realize he was a performer

going through the turn. he runs into second. the party continues. >> american pharoah would not disappoint in his first raisins winning the triple crown. the horse ran away to win the has haskell invitational at monmouth park in new jersey. it's unclear if american pharoah will run again. dallas cowboys training camp starts with a bang. dez bryant gets into an extended scuffle with reserve cornerback tyler patman. at one point bryant shoves a member of the cowboys coaching staff out of the way to get to patman. the skirmish is finally broken up by dallas quarterback tony romo. after it was all over bryant said patman had earned his

respect. tempers spike between two american league playoff contenders. it all starts when toronto's josh donaldson is hit by a pitch from kansas city's edson volkez and narrowly missed by two others later in the game. the benches empty in the eighth inning when a kansas city batter is hit by a pitch. toronto's aaron sanchez would be ejected but the bluejays win 5-2. finally a rocky road for nascar driver brad keselowski at the pocono 400. his number 2 car overshoots his pit and takes out two crew members. one of them loses a tire that ends up in the middle of the pit road. no one was hurt and the crew actually made all the adjustments to keselowski's car. despite the trouble, he finished in second place. coming up after your local news on cbs this morning. rhonda rowsky's big u.f.c. victory. i'm anne-marie green. this is the "cbs morning news."

captures a brave officer in a detroit suburb helping a skunk in distress sunday. the baby skunk had his head stuck in a yogurt container. he moved in very carefully before he removed the container and ran. the skunk tried to spray him but was unable to release an odor because he was too young and too cute. it is the end of the road for a world famous hitchhiking robot. hitchbot was on its first journey in america but he met his demise in philadelphia on saturday. steve patterson of our philadelphia station kyw spoke with its creator. >> reporter: this is the way

family wants to remember hitchbot. the robot now famous for hitchhiking across canada germany, and the netherlands, was just starting his adventure in the eastern united states and then he came to philadelphia. >> we're very disappointed. >> reporter: hitchbot is survived by his parents. >> i'm surprised how upset we actually are. i didn't expect that. i think that image that's been circulated now on social media is quite upsetting. >> reporter: hitchbot was designed as a social experiment to appear child like and defenseless going from one social interaction to another depending on human interaction and kindness of strangers. >> we just picked up a hitchhiking robot. >> it was supposed to test the human spirit. along the oldest street in philadelphia we failed that test. the image of a dismembered robot
