deserves credit tonight as "eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers shows us another person helpedded in rescue. >> reporter: hovering over a pitch black ocean rescue line is lowered to the boat below. one of the men had just gotten pulled back on board from the ocean. and he had been treading water for more than four hours after falling off the fishing vessel searching for his, to say difficult. >> needle in the hey stack. >> reporter: lieutenant tammy whalen was piloting the helicopter looking for the man. after looking she got a call that another ship had found him, thrown a life preserver and somehow he made it back on board his boat both. >> so they send christopher lynch a rescue swimmer down to go see him. >> i started shivering more, and in the fetal position. i knew we needed to get him out of there. >> reporter: that was a tricky part. >> there had been a thunderstorm going through the area seas were kick up. >> reporter: typically rescues are made using this basket lowering first for victim and thin backup and down a second

time for the rescue swimmer. in this case it was running out of the fuel. crew where is forced into a more dangerous maneuver using this sling right here, both men were attached to it and hoisted up out of the sea just in time. >> it is kind of out of it but he made comment i hope you have blankets up there. >> reporter: they did and the man will be fine. happy ending in a tight spot. >> we could not ask for a better outcome. >> good day's work. >> reporter: math rivers, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". we are all grateful for what they do. our long stretch of hot weather continues tonight this is now day number seven of our heat wave and it is not over just yet. meteorologist kate bilo is tracking more hot hot and humid weather from our cbs-3 sky deck. >> thanks, guess contact a couple months ago i went on one of those helicopter ops with that coastguard and it was intense. i can only imagine how that was like. very many brave men and women. great job by them. we are little breezy on the sky deck but dry for now.

not a lot of showers thunderstorm activity in our area it is missing us off to the north. you can see a few showers and storms will try to get going off to the west there over portions of berks county and lehigh valley just a couple of scattered showers here at the the moment. you can see where green shading is where we have some rain cooled air in north jersey, and up into new york state. still hanging on to 90 degrees in philadelphia. although with the humidity not that bad it feels okay to be around 90. maybe we're just getting used to it after seven days in the 90's but dew points right now right around 60 degrees in philadelphia that is not bad dew points in the 50's in trenton right now. 70-degree dew point down through the shore points so that is where things are a bit more team i this evening. your first forecast information was staying in the 80's. warm but generally dry. stray shower, we cannot rule out. tomorrow we have a better chance of a shower mainly south and east. if you are down the shore tomorrow take a look at this in the afternoon any storm could produce downpours gusty wind and small hail but that

"eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is attache diocese headquarters where a petition was delivered david. >> reporter: ukee, according to that group there were over 23,000 signatures on the petition, delivered here to archbishop charles chaput just a little while ago and waldron mercy technically is not under the archdiocese but parents here came out because they say that the archbishop supported the decision to fire marge i winters. >> holding her head high, marge i winters and her friend walk up to the front door of the philadelphia archdiocese headquarters with the simple message: reinstate the former

teacher. >> i'm hopeful that he will listen to, over 20, almost 23,000 people who signed this petition. >> reporter: winters worked as director of religious education at waldron mercy but was recently fired in june after her same sex marriage became public. since the decision, parents have protested the school's decision. some have even threatened to send their children to other schools. >> why are we asking if someone is gay or not the gay? what business is it of ours if someone lives this lifestyle. >> reporter: parent anthony told us that he is outraged. >> someone simply is not telling us, the cold hard facts here. who is behind the discrimination of marge i winters. >> reporter: he and others insist that the archdiocese pressured waldron mercy. archbishop charles chaput agreed with the firing in the statement earlier this summer. >> when i first got him on e-mail, right away, on computer. i was horrified. >> reporter: winters told "eyewitness news" she will

keep fighting information her job and she hopes to directly appeal pope francis during his visit at the end of the september. >> the school and sisters of mercy have been in this position for eight years and it wasn't until tie sees was notified that something changed. so that is really all i can do and you can draw your own conclusions. >> reporter: i reached out to the archdiocese for comment and they sent me a lengthy statement. i want to read part of it tonight. quote a spokesmen told me the basis of the petition itself is problematic. as has been noted several times waldron mercy is a private catholic school and does not fall under the administrative purview of the archdiocese of philadelphia it's wrong for any individual or group to perpetuate the false hood that the archbishop interfered with the school's personnel decisions. that is very latest from the archdiocese headquarters tonight. david spunt for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> david, thank you. a car accident claims the life of an american idol hopeful. police have identified the

victim of the crash as 20 year-old natasha bloat she auditioned for american idol in philadelphia when the suv flipped over on i-95 in lower makefield. five other people were injured in that crash. police say the car was go at a high rate of speed when it happen. the investigation is still ongoing. hazmat crews were called to the port richmond section of philadelphia this morning when fuel spilled on to the roadway after an accident. chopper three over richmond and west more land streets where a tractor trailer collided with a smaller vehicle, one person was taken to the hospital. no word on what caused a fire at an olde city philadelphia apartment building. chopper three over that scene on north third between market and arch. the fire struck two alarms before being placed under control. and you can see the black smoke from the roof, from this photo, as the the crews rushed to it. and rich posted this photo on the fire on twitter with the caption quote, well, this can't be good.

being from the talk radio 1210 studio. pennsylvania congressman chaka fattah vows to run for reelection despite being indicted on federal corruption charges. >> in terms of the allegations that have been made, i am innocent. i will do my work on behalf of the people who have elected me and i am going to be a candidate for reelection in my district next year. >> fattah was in havertown delaware county taking part in the ymca advocacy week kick off event. the democrat who spent more than two decades in congress stands accused of miss appropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal, charitable and campaign funds. speaking to day fattah vowed to clear his name. you have until 11:59 tonight to get a papal regional rail pass from septa a lottery is underway right now. you can enter the lottery on the septa web site and register for the chance for up to ten passes. if you air monk those select you can complete the purchase of the passes at a later day.

seeing with family when an eradic acting man charged at a woman. >> he ran and grabbed her with his right-hand by back of his hair and brought his other arm, put her in the choking hold. >> reporter: debeal ran over and drew his off-duty firearm. he held his badge and used his voice to diffuse the situation. >> he started shouting cursing, once i gave him the commands, i said sir, you know relax. i'm here to help you. wait, an ambulance is coming. >> reporter: debeal's actions reflect a program that the camden county police department has been working on called ethical protective training or verbal juddo. >> i softened my voice. i didn't continue to shout at him. he seemed alarmed by his surroundings anyway. >> reporter: the attacker left in an ambulance and victim was not seriously hurt. officialness camden says officer debeal's actions protect everyone in the situation. >> when you can talk someone in that way and convince them that is what you are there and then follow through like he did, it makes the job easier for the rest of us.

senator bob casey is in philadelphia pushing for fund nothing to research into rare pediatric diseases. children's hospital of philadelphia, unveiled a new bill that would give drug companies incentive to research treatments for rare

and life altering diseases. because fewer children suffer from these diseases, companies are notinvesting into research. >> we want as many researchers and as many experts to focus on rare pediatric diseases and focus on these and then, move quickly into, marketplace. >> in 2012 casey created a pilot program for this same cause but expires in march and he is hoping this bill will make the incentive for funding permanent. the robot's cross country tour was cut short when it met demise on the streets of philadelphia. >> as "eyewitness news" reporter steve paterson shows you a local tech group wants to make amends by helping to create a new robot. >> i think it is important that people rise to the challenge. >> reporter: nerds to the rescue. >> it is a pride issue man. there is no way. i love philly. this is my home town. >> reporter: one day after the world freaked out over philadelphia's fate of the

child like globe trotting robo celebrity hitchbot a collective of the most bright tech he is say they are committed to the come back story. >> let's put that back together. that can't be too hard. >> reporter: for this team it is not. georgia us the the director of the philadelphia non-profit, dedicated to the advancement of all things, tech. >> we want to come together, use our skills, learn from each other and hopefully contribute something valuable to the world. >> reporter: donations started rolling in immediately. twenty-four hours after the story broke they nearly collect $400, to save hitchbot and philly's reputation. they are now toying with the idea of building a new hitchbot or a philadelphia version as an homage. they say they have the tools. the code for hitchb ot is open source which means its creators put road map for how it works on their web site which in turn means the team her basically has all of the ingredients they need to make a similar robot.

stretch of 90's and that day is tomorrow. lets take a look, and we will take you to our atlantic city camera showing nothing but blue skies 1lone stray little cloud right there in at plant i can city. it looks like a great night to be down the shore. look at storm scan three you can see showers and storms have pretty much missed us to the north. this line of storms is a non-start inner our area at least for now. we have to keep watching through the overnight hours but you can see strong storms up through portions of new england. we will zoom down in our area we are not seeing anything at all, just scattered showers in lehigh county and berks county. we will keep an eye on those. they could move through during overnight hours tonight. we have some tropical moisture off to the south that has been producing pretty decent rain over portions of north carolina you can see mostly moving off shore, we will see that photo from one of our eyewitness weather watchers chris brady in the outer banks. people are vacationing down there you can see a boot fill shot. notice lightening in the outer banks there that is where they are seeing stormy wet they are week. we have 85 degrees in

allentown. ninety in philadelphia 88 degrees in millville at the moment. down the shore it is hot as well, 90 in cape may. eighty-four in stone harbor. twenty-eight in ocean city. warm, moist air lifting in. today's high got to 93 degrees. that makes it seventh seventh 90-degree day. seventy would be unbearable. longest heat wave since two years ago july 14th to the 21st of the 2013. top three heat waves we have ever had 195 a 17 day stretch, spanning july into august. we had 13 days in 1953. and in 1999, a 12 day heat wave from july 22nd to august 2nd. so it makes eight days, sound at least manageable and the end i in sight. we will get a break tomorrow. front comes through. could be a strong storm off to the south and east in the afternoon. high pressure builds n we are back in the 80's on wednesday. wednesday looks like a great day. thursday well, sunshine early but then a storm will be creeping in from the south bringing more clouds, thursday afternoon and then perhaps even some rain, thursday night, and that is much needed rain, and we said earlier one

of our eyewitness weather watchers says grass is brown. we need good rain. we will get thursday night into friday. we have partly cloudy, isolated showers. 73 degrees is our low. tomorrow hot and humid with a spotty thunderstorm off to the south, 90 degrees in the city. down the shore we have a better chance for a storm. these could be locally strong along the coast otherwise 87 degrees for your tuesday. warm breezy and wednesday looks like a great beach day 84 mostly sun which that nice warm breeze. the in the poconos isolated thunderstorm possible. mostly to the south. wednesday looks great. shower late in the day on thursday. you're witness weather seven day forecast, again one more day in the 90's and then we're back in the 80's. we are still close. we will stay shy of 90 making heat wave over by mid week. lot at difference, thursday, sunshine early clouds wild in, thursday night into friday if you want to watch for a chance for some rain, and then while that may put a damper on the end of the week with highs near 80's and rain it sounds good to me.

>> the eagles, getting their work in at training camp today defensive coordinator billy davis admitted he made a mistake in handling cornerback carry williams and bradley fletcher. their pass defense was rang 31st and gave up 72 plays 20 yards or more, and williams and fletcher are gone, byron maxwell and walter thurmond were brought into improve the secondary. today davis was asked are they better. >> the reality of the nfl is until you start hitting sundays for real, in the preseason games and guys showing how they do in the heat will battle a again main quarterbacks and receivers. the first game against atlanta will tell us our start and stop particularly in the secondary and move it from there. i cannot answer that question right now. >> sam bradford took part in all team drills and looked sharp. he and jordan matthews hooked up for several plays. chip kelly says sam will start that first presees game with the colts. wide outs are impressed with sam's accuracy and poise, both
