deadly weather in the northeast. two people are dead and more than a dozen others hurt when a powerful storm destroys a circus tent in new hampshire. out of control. a wildfire in northern california continues to grow. this morning, more than 13,000 people in its path are being told to evacuate. a chance to make their case before the debate. most of the republican presidential candidates share the stage ahead of the first gop showdown later this week. and as a backlash grows against lion hunters in africa what airliners are doing to make it harder here in the united states. this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, august 4th,

2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. safety investigators are on the scene this morning of a deadly circus tent collapse in northern new hampshire. a powerful storm slammed into the fairgrounds in lancaster just as the performance was about to begin. the collapse killed ten people and injured more than 20 others. marlee hall reports. >> reporter: the lancaster fairgrounds in northern new hampshire is roped off with yellow tape this morning as authorities investigate what caused a tragic circus tent collapse. brandon isom was among a hundred spectators for the first walker brothers show of the day on monday when heavy rain came in. >> the flaps on the side of the tent, they were open and not tied down to the tent poles or anything. they started going crazy. people who were part of the circus just yelled "run! ." >> reporter: officials say a man and young child were killed in

the accident. more than a dozen others are in the hospital being treated for various injuries. isom says his 4-year-old son bentley was treated and released after a pole hit his left eye. >> got him pretty good. all's i saw was blood when i looked down. >> reporter: the powerful storm that moved through the area at the time of the accident was packing 60-mile-per-hour winds, hail, and lightning. officials will be looking into those conditions and the tent setup as part of their investigation. so far, officials with walker brothers international have yet to comment on the incident. marlee hall cbs news lancaster, new hampshire. crews are struggling this morning to regain control of a northern california wildfire that raced across a containment line. nearly two dozen wildfires are raging throughout california. the rocky fire north of san francisco is the largest. kate kolgarin of our san

francisco station kpix reports. >> reporter: during the daylight hours we watched helicopters and tankers made drop after drop after drop. >> we saw fire consume about 20,000 acres in the span of about five hours at nighttime. so that is pretty incredible unprecedented as we said something earlier in the fire. >> reporter: one of the refueling spots here you can see over here the helicopters can refuel up to 5,000 gallons of water in less than 25 seconds. by nightfall the fire grew more and this lady is getting a front row seat. >> when the smoke and flames fly up are like a hurricane is behind them, you get really nervous. >> reporter: she says they are ready to go at a moment's notice but david didn't want to wait for that moment to come. >> it's like if it burns, it burns. it's tough.

thinking, you know, i could come back home but, once again as long as i'm okay life goes on. >> reporter: firefighters say. >> if the fire engines are competing for roadway with the people who are evacuating it makes it dangerous for everybody. >> reporter: as we have seen a lot could change with a swift gust of wind. in lake county kate kolgerin for cbs news. the tampa area is drying out this morning after several days of punishing rain and flash flooding forced the evacuation of two mobile home parks. police and firefighters rescued about 40 residents carrying some of them to safety on their backs. some families lost their homes in the flash flooding. >> it came up so fast! so fast. i couldn't believe it! and when it starts coming in it becomes really frightening. >> sheriff's deputies used boats to trap residents trapped by heavy downwaters. a local creek overflowed their

bank near a nursing home. several days of rain swamped streets throughout the tampa area snarling traffic. a chance for the crowded field of republican presidential candidates to share their messages before the combative nature of thursday night's debate. 14 of the 17 gop contenders answered questions at a forum in new hampshire. they shared their views on topics like immigration, the economy, obamacare and security and hillary clinton. >> the american people don't trust washington, d.c. to deal with this issue of immigration reform until we secure the border. >> you saw just this past quarter, 0.2% wage growth. if you look where that wage growth is really stagnated, it's the 74% of americans between the age of 25 and 65 who don't have a college degree and don't have manufacturing jobs to go to any more. >> i became governor of ohio. we cut taxes and balanced budgets and up 350,000 jobs.

cutting taxes, balancing budgets is what works to drive economic growth. >> every veteran should be kept a promise that was given to them, which is they should be able to take their veterans card and go to any hospital or medical provider and get treatment when they ask for it. >> what we are as a nation a nation that is up for and by the people the government there to facilitate life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. obamacare comes along with the government saying we don't care, what you, the people, think. we are shoving this down your throat and if you don't like it that is too bad. that is not to the principles of this country. >> as isis stays in a caliphate the size of indiana, doing nothing gives them the chance to send tweets out, a hundred thousand a day, apparently to recruit people here in our own country. >> you need to quit spending money where you're wasting money and we are wasting hundreds upon

hundreds of millions of dollars every year and, by the way, we know where it is because reports come out every year. >> if present, i will unify the american people and we all benefit when we grow the economy and shrink the size of the federal government. >> i want to balance a sustainable environment with a sustainable economy. the two have to go hand in hand. i want clean land clean air, clean water but i want an economy my children and grandchildren can grow in as well. >> one program i appeal is obamacare and by the way, to do that we have to get democratic votes. we haven't been able to send repel to the president for his veto. i will work to get democrats to support our conservative policies and di that in new york. >> we have to be important we vitaminize and not select everyone's phone records every time without suspicion. >> i believe this obama/iranian nuclear deal is the single grave gravest national threat for the

an atlanta hospital. a spokesperson says the 90-year-old carter is expected to make a full recovery. a manhunt is under way in new jersey right now for a gunman who shot two people outside a concert. the shooting took place in the parking lot at the pnc bank arts center in holmdel. witnesses say

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on the cbs "moneywatch," prrt in default. a high speed jet that travels higher than the speed of sound. hena daniels is new york stock exchange with that and more. >> on saturday the government of puerto rico failed to make a 68 million dollar payment on its debt. the government argued that should not be considered a default but moody's investor services says it is and a series of default on puerto rico's debt is coming. on wall street more earnings reports are due today including

disney. the s&p 500 fell 5 and the nasdaq dropped 12 points. retailers including walmart and sears and amazon have agreed to reduce sales of a life-like toy gun and agree to penalties of more than $300,000. the state attorney general say there have been 63 shootings in new york since 1994 as a result of someone holding a toy weapon. airbus has just patented a new hypersonic jet and says it could reach speeds four and a half times the speed of sound. the plane can fly from london to new york in an hour. that is compared to a conventional jet which takes seven to eight hours for that very same flight. but there is no timetable on when the jet would ever be built. it's getting harder for big game hunters to bring their tofys back to the u.s. from africa. united, delta and american airlines will no longer accept

a father in illinois is accused of trying to run over a group of teenagers last week. the dad says he was just defending his daughter after she got into a fight at an elementary school. roy williams faces 12 counts of aggravated assault are wa vehicle and other charges. amazingly, no one was hurt. check this out. a massive sand storm hit the middle east during a heat wave. the storm covered parts of georgia on sunday including the airport in amman.
