the children's show announces a major deal with a cable network. this is the "cbs morning news" this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, august 14th, 2015. captioning funded by cbs good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the united states now believes reports that isis used chemical weapons again kurdish forces in iraq are credible. kurdish officials say their troops were attacked wednesday not far from erbil in northern iraq. we have more from london. good morning, jonathan. >> reporter: good morning. a senior pentagon official tells cbs news that reports isis used mustard gas against the kurds appear credible. it's not clear where isis may have obtained the gas -- maybe from leftover saddam hussein stockpiles -- or, more likely, syria. the chemical weapon surfaced in july. the kurds say the peshmerga had been training when they were attacked. some 60 surrender issue fighters

suffered breathing difficulty. a sign of chemical weapons use. mustard gas, which dates back to world war i, must be used in large concentration to be lethal. the latest turn comes as the u.s. has extend up its air campaign against isis, launching attacks into syria from turkey. the pentagon official tells cbs news the u.s. does not see this as a game changer in the fight against isis, and nobody should be surprised at the lengths to which the extremist group will go. >> jonathan, thank you. this morning, secretary of state john kerry will help raise the u.s. flag over the u.s. embassy in havana, cuba. that's something that hasn't happened since the u.s. cut diplomatic relations with cuba in 1961. we have more from new york on this historic step. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the american flag has not flown over the embassy in cuba since 1961, at the height of the cold war. during today's historic trip, kerry will meet with cuba's

foreign minister. the country's roman catholic archbishop, and a handpicked group of dissidents. ♪ >> reporter: in just a few hours, the american flag will fly over the u.s. embassy in havana for the first time in 54 years. three u.s. service members took part in a rehearsal ceremony at the embassy thursday as members of the community looked on. the change in diplomatic relations is something this 31-year-old cuban woman is looking forward to. when it comes to politics, she says she doesn't care -- not when positive things can happen for cubans young and old. still others like american lois schechter remain skeptical. her family's farm in havana was seized by futurecaidel castro's. >> if we have communication we

should have reparations. >> reporter: in his 89th birthday, fidel castro repeated claims that the u.s. owes cuba millions in damage caused by a long-standing trade embargo. new both sides have taken steps to re-establish diplomatic ties, president obama has called on congress to lift the embargo. >> don't have to be imprisoned by the past. when something isn't working, we can and will change. >> reporter: many republicans disagree and are calling on cuba to improve its human rights practices before a trade embargo is lifted. last month, the cuban flag was raised over havana's embassy in washington, d.c., makinging the change in relations between the two countries. the next phase is attempting to improve relations including negotiations on matters such as direct flights and mail service. anne-marie? >> hena daniels in new york, thank you. cbs news will have a special report on this morning's ceremonies in havana including remarks by secretary kerry beginning at 9:45 eastern time. federal meteorologists say

the current el nino could be the most potent weather change in the past 65 years. an el nino is a mass of unusually warm water stretching from the pacific to south america. the current one is the second strong e strongest on record for this time of year. >> over the next three months, this should turn into what i call a godzilla event. >> in the united states, that could mean heavy winter rain in the south and east and a warmer winter in the north. as meteorologists point out, there are no guarantees with weather. las vegas tries to dry out after a strong thunderstorm moved into the las vegas valley yesterday afternoon. heavy rain triggered flash flooding that washed out roads. wind gusts exceeded 60 miles per hour, and nearly 10,000 customers lost power. the contaminated water from a colorado mine spill has likely

reached utah's lake powell some 300 mile away. the 300 million gallons of waste was accidentally released by contractors cleaning the mine for the epa. there are about 500,000 abandoned mines in the u.s. the epa estimates it would cost between $20 billion and $54 billion to clean them. and that's not including coal mines. this morning the chinese government said it will launch a nationwide inspection of dangerous chemicals following two huge explosions at a warehouse facility. the cause of wednesday's blast remains under investigation. at least 50 people were killed, and about 700 others were injured. one survivor was pulled from the debris this morning. hillary clinton begins a two-day campaign swing in iowa today. overnight, she picked up a key endorsement in the early voting state. former senator tom harkin threw his support behind clinton. in an op-ed in "the des moines

register," harkin says clinton has a record of getting things done. clinton's e-mail controversy won't go away. now two of her key aides may be facing questioning. >> reporter: two of hillary clinton's top aides say they won't delete any of their work-related documents or emails. lawyer for huma abidin and cheryl mills say the pledge comes after an order last week from a federal judge that they preserve their records. on wednesday, the fbi took possession of clinton's private e-mail server. it's trying to determine whether the former secretary of state's personal e-mail account could have been compromised. >> i am confident that i never sent nor received any information that was classified at the time it was sent and received. >> reporter: a lawyer for platte river network, the i.t. company that manages the clintons' e-mail system, said the server of moved to its new jersey facility when the clintons upgraded their system after clinton left the state department. lawyers said the old server is

double the programming it does now, and it increases revenue for the nonprofit group. the new episodes will begin airing on hbo as early as this fall. lawmakers in greece this morning approved a map of new bailout deals. the debate dragged out overnight. the rescue package is worth $93 million and includes harsh spending cuts and tax hikes. passage by the parliament comes hours before finance ministers from the eurozone meet in brussels to decide whether to approve the agreement. stocks on wall street were mixed. the dow gained five points yesterday. the s&p lost two. the nasdaq finished ten points lower. apple ceo tim cook says his company is getting more diverse, but more work needs to be done. facing public pressure, the company released its diversity report thursday. it shows apple more than doubled the number of women, blacks, and hispanics it hired in the last year. but apple's work force remains overwhelmingly white and male. universal pictures is offering to reimbers movie

here's a look at today's forecast in cities around the country -- a dramatic fire rescue as a truck driver was running across the new jersey turnpike with his pants on fire. tourist from australia stopped their car wednesday and helped him remove his pants and put out the fire. his truck had collided with a tractor-trailer. the driver is hospitalized in serious condition. and a man was killed by a roller coaster in ohio. police say 45-year-old james young had just finished riding th raptor thursday at cedar point amusement park in sandusky. he jumped over a fence into a restricted area to find his cell phone which he had dropped. young was struck and killed by

the ride. there were no other injuries. the colorado state court of appeals ruled against a denver baker in a dispute over a wedding cake. jack phillips refused to bake the cake for a same-sex couple. the court says phillips is free to believe what he wants, but that under the state's anti-discrimination law, if he wants his business open to the public, he is prohibited from refusing customers based on their sexual orientation. >> the ruling is wrong. the constitution guarantees me the right to practice my faith, my religion anywhere, any time. >> holding one's sincere religious beliefs does not allow them to use them to exclude other people from public life. >> lawyers for the baker plan to appeal the decision to the state supreme court. and a worker at a target store in arkansas was bitten by a customer's monkey. store officials used social media to track down the owner of

tom brady comes out the first offensive series for the patriots. what a long offseason for number 12 -- >> a surprise start for tom brady in new england's preseason game last night. brady played two offensive series, completing one pass against green bay. the patriots quarterback was not expected to play after missing wednesday's practice to be in federal court to fight his deflategate suspension. new england would lose 22-11. the new york jets dealing with their own drama at the start of the preseason. the jets look flat against detroit last night. the offense failed to score a touchdown as the lions win 23-3. the loss coming hours after quarterback enzo smith has surgery -- geno smith has surgery to repair his jaw.
