homes are gutted after a huge fire in trenton, it rose to four alarms and forced more than a dozen people out of their homes overnight. we will have more details coming up. also this morning, tragedy at a pennsylvania speed way, a sprint car driver from bucks county, killed in a crash. and eagles quarterback sam bradford sitting on the sidelines this weekend, we will hear from him about not playing in the bird first preseason game. he is none too pleased for sure. the it is saturday august 15th, good morning, thanks so much for joining us, i'm nicole brewer. it is 5:00 o'clock on the clock. time for kyla grogan in the eyewitness weather center and hot day on tap. nice to be here with you this morning. >> glad to be here with you

too. >> first time in the studio. >> yes, our new team here. >> i love that. >> it is hot not just today, nicole but it will be the next five days we have lower 90's out there. if you like the the heat, this is your time. >> we will take it: it is august. >> it is august after all. >> time for the heat everybody. we will see it kick in as we head in the weekend today. the first day of the 90's streak. heat wave on the way. lets look at the current temperatures. we're already at 70 degrees in philadelphia you can see 62 mount pocono. sixty-six in atlantic city. you know it is 70 degrees and this early in the day that we're heading somewhere. live neighborhood network shows you that 70-degree narc in bethlehem. we have 68 in bensalem. birdboro69, and cinnaminson, 68. we will see a sloppy mess to the north and west. that ace weak cold front trying to make its way toward us. the it will not be very successful. we will see a lot of sunshine.

but take a look at these numbers, saturday and sunday, sunny and in the 90's, that is the story as we head across the weekend and we will see a lot of heat here. blue skies, lots of sunshine, heat wave over next five days, you know what, it is nice beach weather, so, nicole, if you are not in the city and heading to the beach, 80's today with sunshine that sound like a great day. >> i like where your head is at, kyla, thank you. new this morning 13 people are out of their homes after a four alarm fire ripped through several homes in trenton. fire broke out around ten in the 200 block of hill's place. five row homes were involved and two people were injured. >> there was one female taken to the hospital, her status is unknown at this point. there was one fire fighter taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion and being treated now as we speak, and that is all of the information we have at this point. >> crews are on the scene

investigate what spark that fire. police are investigating a double shooting overnight in west philadelphia two men in their 30's were shot in the arm. suspect is man in his 20's last seen fleeing from that scene. he was seen running through a street on jerry street and police say this is apparently good news. >> now, fortunately that breezeway where the shooter was last seen running, does have, several exterior surveillance cameras, so hopefully, these cameras recorded something, that can help with us this double shooting investigation. >> police are interviewing several witnesses who were in that area at the time. no word on the motive. a sprint car driver from bucks county died last night during a crash at williams grove speed way in mechanicsberg. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff is live in the news center with more on that crash, alexandria. >> reporter: james campbell, junior, better known as jim, died in the multi car accident that took place during warm up lapse. campbell was a feasterville

bucks county resident. he may have had a problem with his car before striking the the barrier along the third corner of the half mile oval course around 7:30. last night was kid night at the speed way. witnesses explain what they saw. >> we saw a cargo around the track. it started having some smoke. it eventually flipped, it involved three other cars. the car then eventually became on fire. >> the speed way canceled most of the programs, tonight a's racing program has also been canceled. this is the second serious crash in a week, on thursday, a sprint car driver had to be air lifted to the hospital after his car flipped off of a knoxville iowa race track. live from the news center i'm alexandria hoff for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". it is 50:00 46789 incredible video after a small plane crashes nose down in the creek and even more inn credible that pilot survived. experimental plane crashed in the creek on fish hatchery

road in allentown, about a quarter mile from the queen city airport. lehigh northampton airport authority said the pilot is thomas siminsky from zionsville. we talk to someone who knows the pilot who said the plane had some sort of mechanical failure when it crashed. >> owe demonstrated what you might call safety. he walked away or basically he ace live and no one else was injured. it doesn't have to be that way. >> faa is investigate to go determine an official cause of that crash, siminski is in the hospital. eagles kick off the preseason tomorrow against the colts and this morning we know that quarterback sam bradford will be sitting this one out. chip kelly announced he is keeping bradford out of the game, instead, mark sanchez gets the start here. bradford has been completely healthy and without limittation throughout camp as he comes off two torn, acl's and let's just say he isn't thrilled with chip's decision. >> sam will not play. that was my decision. he wants to play.

i just thought he was out here, for two weeks, did a nice job. he will get his first work next week. >> it is a coach's decision. i wanted to be out there. i was preparing to be out there this morning he explain it to me. i will be ready to roll next week. >> coach calls it, that is for sure. nice moment at camp, chip kelly and eagles invited friend and family of officer robert wilson to training camp. you will recall wilson was killed during a robbery attempt in march. wilson's partner was there, as well as his friend, very nice. pope's arrival in philadelphia draws closer the american red cross is offering will volunteers a chance to be part of the papal visit. this is pretty cool. "eyewitness news" at red cross emergency center on chestnut street. red cross is looking for a thousand volunteers during the the papal visit to man shelters, provide health services and even more. if you are a multi link what will especially have medical knowledge or experience caring for kid or elderly, that is a

bonus. >> a lot of the work that we do can be caught and we're encouraging people to go on line and register so that we can get them trained. >> the red cross will healther and feed inn volunteers during the the visit. if you are interested in volunteering head to cbs philly.com and then click on links an numbers. septa is giving riders another crack at getting special papal passes for regional rail stations. officials say more passes are available because of duplicate requests. multiple people in a group all requesting passes, and only maybe one of them ending up buying them. some who got their second and third choice stations now have the opportunity to buy or trade in a pass of their first choice. if you are planning to ride new jersey transit river line or atlantic city line to see pope francis you need to get tickets in advance. those special passes go on sale at noon time today and ticket are good for september 26th and 27th. it is getting closer and closer, folks. we are only 42 days away from

that historic visit from pope francis and, of course, our coverage of the papal visit will continue for you on line. get the very latest information on the visit and all of the logistics, at cbs philly.com. now to a historic moment in cuba after more than 50 years the american flag was raised over the u.s. embassy in had van a secretary of state john kerry was on hand for the reopening of the embassy symbolizing the reestablish. of diplomatic relations between those two nations. the event marked a symbolic event to one of the last remnant of the cold war. >> let me be clear, the establishment of the normal diplomatic relations, it is not something that one government does as a favor to another. it is something that two countries do together when the citizens of both will benefit. >> cuban americans in our area watched the ceremony, and it brought back a lot of emotion about the future.

"eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco has that part of the story. >> reporter: the american flag now flies over the embassy in havana a, cuba for the first time in more than 50 years. nationally it has been met with skepticism over cuba's communist regime. >> i believe the people of the cuba deserve what everybody else in the western world has: democracy. >> reporter: but here in philadelphia the move has offered hope with loved ones in the country like angel rokay, chef at cuba libre where everything remind him of home. >> i smell the the food and the names on the menu, back in my country. >> reporter: he left cuba six months ago for work without internet service there, contact home has been limited. but he is hopeful that will soon all change. >> we have been waiting for this day for a long time. i'm very happy that they have a great, expectation. >> reporter: cuban american and philadelphia deputy mayor richard negrin said this means

when we go to the store i find my box of honey bunches of oats, and i'm checking to see if i packaged it. he says "it has a certain code, that's my line, this is the date." if the last 3 letters were p22, that's me. welcome back. new this morning authorities in china evacuated a 2-mile zone over fear of chemical contamination following blast that is rocked a chinese port city on wednesday. wrapped series of blast ripped through an industrial area in the city that housed hazardous chemicals to explain how severe those explosions were, authorities say each blast was

equal to setting off 21 tons have of tnt. the the death toll in this climbed to 85. just an incredible story of survival emerging from the disaster zone a 19 year-old fire fighter pulled alive from the ruble after being trapped for 32 hours. chinese media reports he suffered face, chest, foot injuries. recovery crews are now combing through devastation in search of those still missing. the authorities say that a fire in the shipping container triggered those explosions. series of explosions rock an oil filled chemical supply company north of houston that happened yesterday, that sent thick black smoke in that area. luckily no one there was in the plant at the time of the explosions. residents up to a half mile from that plant are being urged to stay indoors. authorities still working to determine the cause. crews are battling a quick moving brush fire in los angeles, as southern california roasts in the heat wave. they have burn more than 1800 acres there, four cabins

sorry ladies. >> a little extra hair spray. >> trust me my hair is huge when humidity comes in. but you know it will be hot when we're already sitting at 70 degrees in philadelphia take a look at these temperatures. take a look, it is way too early for 70 degrees. it is 5:15 in the morning. people are still rubbing sleep out of their eyes and it is balmy 70 degrees. gorgeous meanwhile out the door, not bad at all. mount pocono 62 degrees. in millville 61. atlantic city coming in at 66 degrees. then we will talk dew points. when dew point and temperatures are close you know humidity is kicking in. we are in the 60's. humidity is kicking in. it ace above 70 percent in philadelphia as we speak. these temperatures will ramp up quickly as we look at your hour by hour forecast. we have 80's by 11:00 a.m. and 90's in the afternoon. lower 90's today. high of 91. we will see lots of unshine out there throughout our day

but you'll feel the heat kicking in. we're heating up between now and noon. our later evening is going to be partly cloudy. we will see fewer cloud, lows in the 60's. should be comfortable tonight you will be surprised at how long that heat hangs on. lets look at storm can three. we are clear here, looks nice. but you will start to notice as we zoom out a weak cold front trying to make its way through. a few showers wanting to pop in there, will not be very successful. at best those in the poconos could see a pop up shower or two this afternoon but we are under the influence of the high pressure. that weak cold front will have a hard time, sunday we will see 90's yet again and monies when this heat kicks in. we have a high of 93 degrees, that is the peak of our heat and humidity. we will roll through weekend heading toward monday but by tuesday, we're still in it, everybody. it will be a hot one. a streak of 90's. how will it feel?

yeah, clearly we're in the humid, steamy category across the next four days. that monies when we will really see all of this come to the crescendo of the heat. we have an air quality alert today as well. it is an orange air quality alert, that means if you are sensitive group those with respiratory issues you need to stay inside, stay in that air conditioning because it is in the unhealthy level. just a head up in philadelphia, surrounding areas. now heading out to the shore, things will get nicer out there. temperatures in the 80's. this looks like a perfect beach day. uv index is up there. get your sun screen on. sunshine warm, low rip current risk and wind in the bad either, southwest today at five to 10 miles an hour. water temperatures, look at this, nice and warm, everybody, except sandy hook, is running above their average, take a look at cape may 78 degrees. now we're talking. that is when i want to get in the water in the upper 70's.

but they did not. duke and duchess of cambridge are fed up with what they call dangerous surveillance tactics yad by notoriously aggressive paparazzi n a strongly worded three-page letter kensington palace warns a line has been crossed and that furtheres lacing intact tics would represent a very real security risk. the palace says photographers have gone so far as to monitor movements of prince george and his nanny around london parks, used other children to lure the young prince into view, even hiding in sand dunes on a beach to take photos of him playing with his grandmother. one of the more disturbing cases happened last week outside a park, a photographer was caught hiding in his car snapping photos of the two-year old prince george from a hole in his trunk. >> camping out in the car and stalking a kiddies pretty brutal. >> reporter: palace a correspondence respond event royanika says it is a

and through go, a local legend on the baseball field but don't pay any attention to his age, from player to coach, at age 85, one man's 69 year journey with a local baseball league will have you inspired. today is saturday, good morning, thanks so much for joining us, i'm nicole brewer at 5:30 on the dot here and we're talking about high humidity, hot temperatures, probably not the best hair day but you kyla grogan will get you through it. >> your hair is looking fabulous. >> thank you. >> we are off to a good start and thankfully we're in air conditioning and that is the key today. is there an air quality alert too today nicole. anyone with respiratory problems in the air conditioning. >> good call. >> here's why. we're all ready at 70-degree high here in philadelphia and you can see 76 percent humidity to. to give that perspective yesterday difficult news at noon time hour we were at 40 percent humidity. that is a big deal that we're already there. there is lots of moisture. that heat will kick in fast

and furiously today. here are current temperatures. sixty-five in reading. seventy in philadelphia. sixty-six in atlantic city. we are already heating up in rerow. still very quiet. not a busy boardwalk but i do see beach patrol going down. 68 degrees. i can bet you that is place to be today at the shore because those are where the temperatures will be cooler. taking a look at storm scan three. we are looking relatively clear. we have a weak front to the north and west trying to make its way in. it will not be successful. we will not see any showers in philadelphia, for sure. the as we look at the temperatures we should be in the 80's. by the time we get to the 11:00 a.m. hour. prepare yourself, folks, it will be a hot hot one and as you can see our three day forecast, we're talking 90's and i have to tell you it goes longer then three days. we will talk about that in just a few moments in your seven day forecast. blue skies, lots of sunshine, today, a heat wave underway and nice beach weather. there is a bonus.

little nice beach weather, nicole, i have positive news there. >> any excuse to hit the the beach, i like it, kyla, thanks. after decade of decay a north broad street land mark seems ready to spring back to life. fail's historical commission approved a top to bottom renovation of the long shuttered divine lorraine hotel. "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt has more on the make over and landmark's history. >> reporter: while we were out here tonight i could not help but notice people wanted to talk about the divine lorraine and everybody says the same thing, it is about time. if you have driven up or down broad street you cannot miss the broken windows, graffiti, decaying shell of the building that was once known as a jewel in philadelphia's crown. >> what are they going to do with something like that, historic. >> reporter: donald dennison enjoyed many dinners with his family in the hotel restaurant in the 1960's, they broke racial barriers by integrating the the hotel in the late 1940's. >> it was beautiful, it was

crowded. a lot of people. it was almost like an the atmosphere of sort of like a multi purpose room where you ate in. >> reporter: but building's history goes back to the opening in 1894. originally some of philadelphia's most wealthy lived in the building. hotel lorraine took over not long after running for years before father divine came on board. >> it is a tribute to our area people just moving in this area getting better every time >> reporter: lester fellows own's jimmy g's steaks next door. the philadelphia historic commission approved a plan friday to turn the building in to apartments and a restaurant, another pump of life in this part of the time between the city and temple's campus. >> with all of the graffiti and all that. the guy who bought it, purchased it will do a fine job, i mean i heard nothing but good things about it. >> reporter: "eyewitness news" has learned the renovation will cost around 28 million-dollar and developer

eric bloom field will rely on federal tax credit tied to preserving a building history, a history donald dennison calls priceless. >> as a kiddy sat in there and i had something to eat and now i can actually see that this building that i thought was at one time was going to be demolished will be now renovated. >> reporter: i'm told developer plans to start construction next month, that construction of the building is expect to take about 18 months. reporting from north philadelphia, david spunt for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". 5:34. a pair of philadelphia police officers are get something national attention all thanks to time magazine. here are 19 district officer shawn devlin on the left, and michelle mattos on the right, on the cover of the latest issues here. the the cover story is about what it is like to be a police officer in america one year after ferguson. they talk about their experiences patrolling west philadelphia, and you can look at the magazine on news stand next week. well, 122 cats and kittens

were rescued from deplorable conditions in the poconos, they are recovering now in philadelphia animal control officers found them inside a home in henryville, monroe county and transported them to the spca headquarters in north philadelphia. now the cats and the kittens are being treated for injuries caused by a serious flee infestation inside that home. officials say that the owners had planned a opening, planned on opening, a sanctuary for those cats but apparently were unable to keep up with the rate that they were reproducing. they voluntarily surrounderd those animals. >> some of them do need more extensive medical care, we had one that required a blood transfusion last night we were able to provide and happy to report that the four week old kitten is doing very well today. the rest of them are in stable condition but just need additional medical treatment for their injuries. >> the cats will be made available for adoption, so far no charges have been filed against the owners. word of two big recalls involving cars, volkswagen

announced a recall on more than 420 vehicle tolls fix a problem that keeps front air bag from deploying. recall covers eight models including the the jet a, passat and golf. you can see all of the affect cars on the screen there. we have a list for you. in this one also for parents, another recall we are talking about, britaxis recalling 200,000 car seats because of the shoulder straps could come loose this recall effects several models of the advocate, the boulevard, and marathon click-type car seats that were made between august 2014 and last month. britax will send customers a lubricant to fix that problem. we have put information about both of these recalls on our web site at cbs philly.com. wounded veterans and many supporters cycled around philadelphia to bond, and to heel. dozens took part in the solder ride, cycling event, held nationwide to help military veterans transition back to civilian life. 12-mile ride started at lincoln financial field in south philadelphia and then

continued toward the art museum before finishing back at the link. an iraq war veterans from pittsburgh was among the cyclist. >> what they do is they motivate you to go out, and completing a task. while you are completing about that task you are not thinking about that injury. you are focusing on the buddy in the front, buddy in the back and at times you get that sense of peace. you don't feel no pain good after the ride veterans relaxed and took in an eagles practice. solder ride is organize by the wounded warrior project. an eight five-year old baseball coach has created his own field of dreams in vincentown, new jersey. starting out as a young player in the late 1940's and he has been coaching for a half century. long time. he has been inspiring others on and off the feel. our natasha brown has his story. >> reporter: he is a living legend with the vincentown

baseball team with scores of championship wins under his belt. coaching, cheering from the side line of a field that bears his name. >> it is a great honor. >> reporter: harry thompson has been coaching since 1961, starting out on this field as a 16 year-old player. coach thompson's history with this league spans decade. he has not only been coaching for 50 years but he started as a player 69 years ago. he takes us back in time when he had an opportunity to go to spring training with the brooklyn dodgers. but it would be a dream deferred by war. >> well, instead i was in korea in august of 1951. so that is when i went. i got my draft notice. that was it. >> reporter: he served his country well only to return home to the very baseball field where it all began. thompson coaches an 18 year-old grandson in the rancocas valley league, a league of skilled players from their early teens to middle-aged.
