ben hogan, 1953 and of course tiger woods in that fantastic year of 2000. jordan is trying to be the third. lofty standards for someone just 22 years of age but he's excelled in every department. four adrift at the moment, though. when he burst on the scene we didn't expect this type of season. of course, at the masters, he was brilliant. perhaps the first of many green jackets. the u.s. open at chambers bay, nobody else was better. and then so close at the open championship. just one shot adrift at that playoff. 13 top 10's in 20 starts. really, he's been second to none this year, setting his own standards. many a player in front of him at

bill: that's a good look at the trouble to the right off this cliffhanger. jason day. david: you can just see that little slope that comes in from the left edge of the green here. he's going to go up the hill back to the left and then down the hill towards the hole. bill: just over 17 feet. david: difficult one to get on line. can't really hang it out to the right. bill: what a putt! what a putt. and he goes to six under today and 15 under with a two-shot

advantage in the 97th pga championship. nick: nice way too start the second nine, all threes. bill: to 15. frank: spieth from what has to be at least 90 feet. matt jones did tap it. and that's pretty good. as you can see, this putt here, 91 feet. flag on 32 paces today from that front. so far able to get them all up and down in two. next hole is a par 5.

it's been reachable for just about everybody in field. wonderful views here at whistling straits. two miles of lakeshore line -- lake shoreline. as we go back to 14. verne: and on the green at the short par 4, here's justin rose for birdie. well done. rose is back to 12 under and three off the pace being set by jason day.

on the tee. jason day. take a look at this 14th hole. nick? nick: yeah, i enjoy this hole. this is just strategy. justin rose played it perfectly. you hit it far enough down you get a decent look at the flag. you pull it left and you're blind. spin it back and definitely a birdie opportunity at 14. verne: a reminder, he hit it, what, 374 earlier? nick: this is back into the wind. just looking for the right spot with a 3-wood. verne: david? jason: hold your head. david: he's asking it not to turn.

verne: almost in the same spot we found justin rose a moment ago. now matt jones. david: that says it all. verne: uh-huh. it is on the fairway. to 15. frank: par 5 for spieth. this putt has a tendency to move to the right as it slows down. so he heads to the par 5.

in the last hour or go, -- so, at one stage matt jones had a three-shot lead when he teed up on the ninth hole. it's completely changed around. bring in peter kostis and have a look at jason day's swing. peter: it's always fun to look at this golf swing. pay particular attention to how he rotates his body on the full swing. good, full turnaway going back. the hips lead. the left foot and left knee clearing. watch as the left shoulder moves. it continues on behind his neck. the right shoulder coming through. an incredible amount of rotation on the forward swing, one of the reasons why he hit it so high and so solid. frank: that was power personified. speaking of power -- peter: after a terrific tee shot

by finau, he's got 202 left into the breeze. frank: as you can see, just a mid iron. peter: a 5-iron on the way. very, very high into the breeze. this is going to have to get back there. frank: just short of the flag high. playing back in the breeze today. that's why 15 is the hardest hole on the golf course. to 16. gary: here we go. 574 yards. these guys are just having at this today and he picks up the tee. i'm going to guess that is absolutely perfect, which it is. he might have a go with this one. talking about the 280 range from that place there. the wind just a little bit against him. to the 159 tee.

frank: justin rose. 200 yards just to get to the fairway. that's not really the issue. it's where it narrows up. around the 300-yard mark. his caddie has been with him for a while. they won a major championship together a few years ago. you see everything in play. it funnels in protected on both sides of the fairway, like most of the holes out here. nick, he has that ability to just hit that little fade on a hole like this nick: he does. he hits a beautiful failed. i'm surprised at how much clubhead speed he gets. justin can get over 120 miles an

hour, so you get a good zip. frank: starts down the left, peels back. beautiful tee shot. still have close to 200 yards left. to 14. verne: jason day, first to play. david: just in a little cleft in the front side of the green. it all gathers there. 52-degree wedge.

verne: yeah, i'd say it was perfect. six birdies, an eagle already today. offset, but only minimally, by two bogeys. david: this is the second or third time he's almost holed it on the fly today. verne: now matt jones. david: just 87 yards. and again, you can fly it in behind the hole and there's a slope that will bring it back. if he leaves it a little short, it will kick on. a sand wedge.

solid. jim: had a two-shot swing with jones, in his own pairing. at the ninth, at 10. nick: perfect. and then 11, three birdie shots. a driver -- perfect shots. a driver then a wedge to here and tracks in a perfect three. jim: this is absolute perfection. at 13. didn't expect this one. nick: this is a twister. up the hill right to left and then back. that is definitely making everything. jim: all these stats here, including proximity to the hole with shots from the fairway. he leads the field this week with shots like that. nick: i should think by quite a few feet. they're on some tearing pace, really. this is major and they're on

now have seven guys in double digits. double digits used to be guaranteed to win a major. now you're five back at 10 under par. verne: that's right. ian: i was just thinking exactly the same thing, nick faldo. david: it's not like it's gotten any easier. nick: the quality of the golf courses is better. they've gotten a lot longer. the equipment is a huge difference but it's the numbers i'm so impressed with. 16 guys from eight under and better. verne: birdie-birdie for day and jones. jason day will head to the 15th still maintaining a two-shot edge. frank: after a drive and 5-iron,

tony finau at 15. peter: uphill at the beginning so has to be careful with the speed. frank: was never really online. to 18. jim: this was earlier, at 18. dustin johnson. just been motoring along. he's made some birdies on the second side. and he knew what he was doing with it too. look at that. cozies it up there close. 15. frank: faye gnaw, finishing out. -- finau, finishing out. he's certainly done well today. back to 18. jim: and after j.b. holmes' playing companion made a birdie

putt. dustin brushes in the par. a round of 68. he's in tied for eighth at the moment and who knows? tomorrow he could make a run at it. he is seven back but if there's a stumble at the top and if there's anybody who could catch fire, he could be the guy. 15. frank: this is 222 yards. it's a 5-iron for rose. he's got to get every bit of this. nothing wrong. rights in the heart of the green. just get through this with a par. maybe snap a few birdies coming in. let's have loot -- another look at that 5-iron. a nice fade off the tee. let's see what in does. plays this one the other way.

the versatility of the players today. rose currently at 12 under. jason day really, that run of threes on this second nine have made the difference. just found an extra gear. seven under already. matt jones hasn't really put a foot wrong but now two adriff. dustin johnson has now posted. nine under. the scoring today is just terrific. that rain last night might have softened things but these boys really upped it a gear. mickelson posted a round of 66. he was runner-up last year but you would think too far adrift. the sun settles on lake michigan. still plenty of golf to be played, though. i have an idea we'll see a lot more birdies before the day is

over. mainly because of this guy. jason day. tee shot at 15. david: no drive and wedge. the breeze has stiffened just a bit. that was into the breeze. that's a huge tee shot. right into the narrow neck. frank: he's thrown everything at whistling straits. now matt jones. he also shot a little draw. overdone it. that might be right. missed the bunker. that's not the thick stuff.

still going to be a long way to go. some more tents to overcome. 35-year-old australian. let's go up ahead to 16. gary: and we're going to find 6 feet away, jordan spieth. he's making birdies and he's losing ground. that's going to come up short, probably going to be another birdie. the guys in front of him are just lighting it up. i mean, it's been an afternoon of lighting it up. 77 players made the cut. i think now this is going to be 321 birdies if he makes this, and seven eagles for this field. they are killing this golf course, which is, as you've all seen, it's a fright thing landscape. it is 7,400 yards.

over 1,000 bunkers. and they're making birdies and eagles everywhere. look at this back nine, and he can't gain any ground on anybody. jim: spieth tied for six, five behind. matt jones, he's three under for the day. he's had some rather interesting journeys along the way. an odyssey or two. but jason day is on fire. he leads it 16 under par and we'll be back in a moment.

we asked people to tell us something that happened in their past, and something that might happen in their future. the good things were put on yellow magnets, and the bad ones on blue. the results show the past was a pretty even mix of good and bad. yet the future was almost all good things. now that you've seen the results of this experiment, what does it mean to you? we all want to think about positive stuff. realistically, there will be down times. it's great to think optimistically, but let's plan for whatever the future might bring. prudential, bring your challenges. jim: always a night of drama and

suspense. begins with "ncis: los angeles, "criminal minds" and followed by 48 hours" only cbs. all 18 holes coming your way tomorrow at the pga championship at 2:00 eastern time right here on cbs. 15. frank: justin rose from close to 60 feet. a little mound in it. goes down into the hollow. it might look close but that's still about five feet. to 17. ian: jordan spieth on the tee here of the par 3. jordan: oh, you got to draw, don't you? you got to turn left. ian: it is now.

and that's exactly what he was talking about. just come in a little bit and feeds down towards the hole. nick: i love the way he screamed at it. he was only four yard right of the flag. ian: exactly. 217 yards today but it's six yards downhill but then coming back into the slight breeze, maybe five to 10 yards of breeze into them. only five birdies and averaging well over par. one of the top five hardest holes. justin rose did make par. frank: and what's the plight of matt jones? david: from 230 yards, ripping a 3-iron at it. frank: another yard to the right might have scooted all the way towards the flag.
