with eagles highlights. the birds kicking off the preseason slated home this afternoon against the colts. quarterback sam bradford and running back demarco murray were held out of the game by chip kelly but we got our first look at the first rookie class. high expectations for the birds this season. chip has full control over player personnel his third year. his first round draft pick nelson agholor eagles rookie receiver snagging a highs from sanchez and the rest on his own. 34-yard touchdown. eagles up seven-three. on the next drive former oregon duck, kenny barner gaping hole and barner take it to the house after 9-yard run. how about the defense? second round pick eric row gets beat up the middle but recovers forcing the fumble. back to barner for just a moment. the birds forcing a punt 25 seconds left in the half. punish the colts. remember how good the eagles special teams were last year?

barner goes all the way for a 92-yard punt return for the birds going into the half up 2 23-three. then it's the moment so many wanted to see. tim tebow in a birds uniform. tebow mania at the linc. he entered the game late the third quarter extended the lead with a 7-yard touchdown run. eagles cruise to an easy win 36-10 your final. here the numbers. tebow six for 12 with 69 yards. zero touchdowns and inceptions but four carries for 15 yards including that score. matt barkley playing the bulk of the snaps today he finish 12 for 20. 192 yards, one interception. third string quarterback situation one of those more interesting position battles going on in camp right now. here's chip on barkley and teb tebow. >> i thought did he a real nice job. we screwed up a little bit on that one naked where it ended up getting tipped but that guy should have been block. our tightnd was lined up too

tight. they should have gotten him to the opportunity and given an tune to throw it. i thought did he a real nice job out there. you have to look whose in with seven. different set of receivers with matt than timmy. different line at times. you have to take some of that into -- there's a couple of those timmy helder the ball. receiver ran the wrong route. he's looking for the receiver to run shallow across. we don't get that a lot in train session where is the receiver didn't run the right route what do we do? a couple busts out there. we have a young receivers who leu think will be good three of those guys got here a week ago. there were a couple mental mistakes up front at the receiver spot. >> pat gallen has more on the birds win from the linc. >> one player at the center of it all through training camp has been marcus smith. last year's first round pick. he looks to take on the spot that brandon graham occupied a year ago in that back up outside linebacker roll and so far so

good from both chip kelly and marcus smith um-hmm self. >> i was ready to go out and try to smoke somebody, you know what i'm saying. >> did you plan as much last year. i definitely want to play a lot this year. want to be an ill pack to the team in some type of way. >> it's not all new for him much he's been there, done that. this isn't his first preseason game or training camp. there's kind of a calming sense around him. >> after less than appealing rookie campaign smith is out to prove he can take over brandon graham's role from year ago. >> from where i want to get i'll take that step and take bg's role. i have to own it and tell myself this is exactly what i want to do because i'm not saying he took that role and eventually became a starter. that's what i want to do. >> in addition to smith other players looking to make the foster stepped up in their game one auditionings. ed reynolds had two interceptions and rookie eric row made a nice recovery to cause a fumble. >> i felt a lot better this

year. i was able to participate in spring. here for all training camp much staying healthy. >> when asked why and how the eagles kept their energy high for a full 60 minutes, kelly pointed to the backups. >> depth. we got a lot of depth an lot of guys fighting for spots. everybody is aware of that. like we gave a big rah-rah speech before we own on the field. we put a lot of emphasis when you get a chance to go in the game it's live. no excuses. >> pat gallen "eyewitness sports". >> and joining us now zach berman the eagles beat writer for the philadelphia inquirer. thank you so much for being here. >> appreciate you having me. >> obviously the first preseason game was exactly what you want to see. it couldn't have been much better. you know, who impressed you the most? >> well, i would need to go to if you look at the running backs kenyan barner had very good

game. the obvious choice is wide receive nelson agholor he stood out because he's your first round pick and his touchdown was really out staning. it's exactly what the eagles were hoping for when they drafted him. he went up to catch the ball. had the body control to stay with it and sprint past the colts. >> over thrown ball. like he is exactly what the fans wanted to see. he did. >> exactly. and you look at them. they need to row place jeremy maclin. matthews will take a step up in year two but nelson a who as big chance to beat josh huff to be a starter or major contributor in maclin's spot on the outside. >> just by talkin talking to hii know you do with the players all the time, my limited experience with him he just seems very humble and like i got to get better better bet better. >> you're absolutely right about that. that really endeared him to the eagles. they call a growth mind set and that's what he has a great back

story. moved to the united states from africa at a young age. grew up in a very close knit family. was outstanding at usc but he has come in and is really um pref the team. during the spring he was -- he would call a taxi the night before to have the waiting for him at 6:00 15 a.m. be at the team facility before anyone else they're really impressed with his work ethic. >> wow. you have to like the way the defense played today. sure. that's a big step from last year when you look at first team tee doo fence it was only two strives of drives they were on the feel. third downs they were not great in but they cep the colts out of the end zone. they did not allow big plays that's a big improve many from last year. you look down the depth chart, ed reynolds whose a fifth round pick in 22014 did not make the team. he comes out this preseason has two interceptions today. that's a player to keep on the radar. bought eagles need depth at safety.

>> the on-going battle for that third string quarterback position. sure. >> i would say both barkley and tebow looked good today for different reasons if you could talk about that a little bit. >> i would say throwing the ball matt barkley was more impressive and that's been consistent throughout the summer. when you look at barkley if you don't know had they are, you just come to practice and you say who is better at passing number two or number 11? you'd have to say number two, because matt bark system just more polished. but tim tebow brings a lot of other stuff with him. you saw him running today. scrambled for the touchdown and his mechanics are better. chip kelly said that after the game and you need to like that. but i would still say barkley has the edge. >> doesn't it seem like chip kelly is not necessarily a barkley fan just by even bringing tebow in? >> you know, it's an interesting question. matt barkley has been here going into his third season, he came

in, trying to compete for starting job. if you would have told him then two years later going into this third year he'd be competing for the number three spot he would to the have believed that. by no means has he locked down that spot. but it's going to be determined in games. if barkley plays the way did he today, then i think he'll be the number three quarterback. but there is something intriguing about tebow and you're correct, they brought him for a very obvious reason. >> and everything that kelly had to say after the game was like pro tim. >> sure. sure. he did compliment barkley but he made sure to mention that he considers the players on the field with. so tim tebow is out in with the third stringers, the threes and the fours. matt barkley was in there mostly with the twos. >> right. and is it amazing to you because it really -- i -- he's such a fan favorite all right. the fans go crazy for tebow.

>> sure. the loudest ovation at lincoln financial field when tebow took the -- tebow took the field and when he need out there he needed to quite the crowd because they were so loud. you don't usual seal that in the third quarter of a preseason game. >> no. mark sanchez did not look so good. no. >> now, with sam bradford and we didn't get to see him at all. how worried are you about him? >> i wouldn't be too concerned because again it's a small sample size only two drives. he was two of seven today and two completions he needed his wide receivers to go up and really catch the ball for him. >> bail him out today. exactly. they know what they have in him and that's the encouraging part is that he started games last year. he's not going to be the star starting quarterback as far as sam bradford is healthy. if you're looking at backup quarterbacks he's one of the better one in the league. >> people worried why isn't bradford playing.

? why isn't murray playing when he's barely -- practiced. he's been out allowed. does that concern you at all? >> it will concern me if next saturday night in the second preseason game if those players are not out there. at this point chip kelly is really managing them. the demarco murray case is more zero curious they're aig see not hurt. as far as sam bradford he practiced every single day and eagles are being cautious coming off the second torn acl. >> talk about the secondary. how do you think they look? >> i thought they look decent. now, it's a small sample size. so you really only looking at two drives but they did not allow the big place and that was the big issue last year. byron maxwell is a big upgrade at cornerback. they like nolan carol. the x factor is walter thurman whose a converted cornerback playing safety. i see the poe 10 is a there. i see what they like in him but

we need to see more on saturday night in terms of him playing longer into the game. >> after the game today, i don't know if you felt this way chip sealed to be snippy with the media. this is like the first preseason game. i mean -- >> chip,. >> what was that. >> he does not like talking about injuries. that's not his favorite topic. so i understand it, but for the most part his answers were pretty informative. when you bring up injuries with him, that's when he can get snippy as you said. >> the print whatever uh-uh want. we have a. it seemed odd this is right out of the chute he has that attitude. nothing gets better. he's hit and miss much always entertaining when he's up there and he was that way today as well. >> what do you think is the biggest thing that the team has to worry about now and maybe what can we expect to see in the next preseason game? >> that's a good question. sam bradford' health will be the big health.

not just his health but his performance. >> it's a big deal. you're at a point now it's going into week two of the preseason has not missed a single play in practice. it's about getting hit. he's not taken a hit since august of 2014. so the number one thing without a doubt is seeing sam bradford on the field in games getting hit and getting back up. >> and what can we expect? like the second preseason game is kind of like the biggest one. >> sure. the second and third one you see most of the time. >> right. >> i would expect them to go a whole quarter. chip kelly will announce that later this week probably hear that on friday if history serves as a template there i think the first quarter and if they want to extent bradford they can. one quarter of work would be good for the second preseason game for him. >> at least it was nice way to kick you have at pre didn't. a lot of stories. it's a interesting week with the ravens coming into town. >> you can reid zach's work in the philadelphia inquirer and on philly.com. follow his twitter at z berman.

he look very fast. very explosive could have a big year. the second one nelson agholor we saw it today. had the touchdown. look great. >> great. >> here's the thing about agholor. i've been covering a team for long time, and every time you bring up his name to either sanchez or bradford, they get this big smile on their face and start talking about him and sanchez pulled a story about a route he ran in practice it sounded like he was talking about that, i caught the biggest fish ever. it was like amazement. i think he's going to have a really good year. i think his target level will probably be somewhere around what jordan matthews did this year with matthews taking on the role of a maclin. amari cooper with the raiders he's a beast. when it's all said and done he may end up being the best wide receiver to come out over the last two years. alabama last year, 124 catches, 1700 yards, 16 touchdowns, derek car will find him a lot. they'll be best friends after this season.

i mean, he is the best wide receiver the car's ever had and he could be dangerous for a very long time. >> in most drafts who do you see the first player to be picked? >> probably levee yann bell it depends on your scoring for your league. if it's quarterback. something along those lines. >> even though he's missing two games. even though he's missing those two games. last year bell is great. probablily best running back going in the league even with those missing games just because he'll be fresh. down the stretch he'll ab little bit fresher. the two games hurts but hopefully you have a better draft that you don't have to just rely on one guy. aaron rodgers should be the fir quarterback off the coast. antonio brown first wide receiver. >> you can find me right here on cbs3. for kick off coming up this season i'm also writing for the fantasy picks.com they have a great site set up get everybody read for their draft so it's good.
