threatened one of the deputies, went up, started stabbing one of the deputies. that deputy was taken out on a stretcher. we are told that deputy is going to be okay, but, before that all happened, another deputy returned fire, and curtis smith was shot. he was taken to paoli hospital where he was later pronounced dead. we had a chance to speak to many witnesses in the building just going about their daily business. here's what a few of them had to say. >> he went right through security, and i remember, i'm looking, i'm going to jeff a. next thing he hear pop, pop and i was looking at him. he was looking at something. because of incident like this across the nation we have learned how to deal with an attack, in a courthouse. nobody else was injured. the sheriffs did their jobs. the lock down went perfectly. >> reporter: a lot of people have asked about this white house connection. well, we have mentioned it before. he was arrested in march of this year for jumping the the white house fence. we're not exactly sure when his next court appearance was

scheduled for that but detectives here want to find out his motive exactly what he was doing at the courthouse and what his motive was for taking out a knife and stabbing a sheriff's deputy. we're reporting live from west chester. i will have new details at 6:00. david spunt for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> david, thank you. now to a gruesome discovery a foul odor lead authorities to several decomposing bodies inside a philadelphia garage. there is a connection, to a nearby funeral home. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff is live at central detective with this story, alex. >> reporter: jessica, i did just check with police and no arrest are has been made just yet. we do know that this funeral home has been closed for quite a while. exactly why it shut down is still unclear. i have confirmed that this business had a lengthy quote disciplinary history. discarded grave stones, beside the now closed powell funeral home, seemed to indicate that something had gone wrong. just across the street, corry,

made an upsetting discovery. >> i smelled it. is there dead bodies in there. >> reporter: three decomposed bod ace cord to go police, curetan described where they were kept. >> in the box and one in the crawl space. >> reporter: neighbors and state record identified janet powell-daily as a third generation owner of the family business. police say that she also owned the garage in the 2600 block of hager street where bodies were found. >> nobody should be stored like that. >> no where, laying around. >> reporter: neighbors say the powell familiar rally with home was a corner stone in the community. everybody we spoke with buried or cremated family members through them. >> my grandmother, beautifully, and a couple of other people, she did a good job. >> community just wants some answers. >> reporter: no answer from his janet as questions now continue to grow. as for the identities of those three people, police have not yet confirmed them.

our area last night and today down the shore is off the the coast. the skies are clearing for us and cool, dry air, is weeping in around the back edge of the upper low. we are experience something pretty nice conditions here in philadelphia, clear skies across the region, not even a cloud in the sky right now. you can see showers moving down the shore earlier today. those have since cleared out. as they do humidity levels are dropping. we are at 87 degrees in philadelphia. seventy-nine in land cats ter. just 80 in reading. 80 degrees in allentown. you can see dew point dropping as well. to point in the lower 50's to the west. still hanging on to the 60's throughout the shore points. due points are progressively dropping throughout the the day. today is a transition day as that front clears the companies but through this evening 81 degrees at 7:00. by 9:00 p.m. we are down to 77. seventy-four by 11:00. coming up we will talk about the stellar stretch how long does it last before the heat and humidity return and i'll have latest on tropical storm erika and latest track released a few minutes ago from the national hurricane center coming up when i join you inside.

back to you. a ship that ran a ground got help from the coastguard and mother nature. 328-foot long ship lost power late last night in the delaware river near salem, new jersey. coastguard says that the vessel was successfully refloated during high tied, around 9:00 this morning. ship is being mored so inspectors can take a look at it no one was hurt. family of the new jersey man fatally shot by police held a press conference with civil rights leaders. two bridgeton police officers shot and killed jerome reid at a traffic stop last december. last week a grand jury decided those officers will not face charges. today in newark the family delivered a letter to the new jersey u.s. attorney asking for a federal investigation into that shooting. police need your help identifying several suspects wanted for a brazen home burglary in west oak lane. two men are seen on surveillance video using a lad tore get in the home in the 7900 block of pickering avenue. once they get inside police say suspect stole jewelry and

safe that contained a handgun. they fled in the light colored minivan waiting for them outside. if you recognize these suspects call police. new poll shows nearly half of the pennsylvania voters want attorney general kathleen cain to step down. cain is facing criminal charge that he is she leaked secret grand jury information and then lied bit under oath. a quinnipiac university poll find 49 percent of those surveyed think kane should resign. more voters disapprove of the way kane is handling her job as the state's top prosecutor. 54 percent disprove her a performance, 20 percent approve. another day on wall street, do you you jones was up for most of the take but reversed itself by the close. stocks surged from the opening bell after after word that china cut interest rates to try to boost its economy. investors also got some encouraging news on u.s. consumer confidence but it wasn't enough to prevent another sell off.

here are closing numbers, dow jones ended down almost 205 points at the 15666. the nasdaq was down nearly 20. s and p 500 dropped 25-point to close at 1,867. philadelphia archbishop charles chaput is urging local catholics to brave crowds and come see the pope. chaput distributed a letter to the catholic community today and he says based on the number of registered participant philadelphia a is already the the largest world meeting of families in history. chaput cautioned the community not to give into the anxieties and war that i go along with any major effort like this. archbishop writes quote there is always a temptation to focus on possible problems and security logistics and transportation and when that happens people begin to wonder if the effort of coming to center city is worth the time and energy. i promise you that it is. we are 32 days away from the pope's arrival in philadelphia stay with "eyewitness news" on tv and always on our web site at cbs

unexpect disturb a answer for drivers in cincinnati, a carjacker jumped in and when police tried to get him out he runs across several lanes of the the highway dodging cars and even tries to stop another vehicle. the officer eventually caught up to him and stopped him with a taser. officials at the national zoo in washington d.c. released a photo of the three day old panda, this is one of two cubs born, recently, weighs less than half a pound. little bit i tiny. it is being bottled and tube federal because mother panda has moth been paying much attention to it. the it is trying to keep it healthy. tonight is a great night to be outside. >> how about that, dining outside, that is what our vittoria woodill is doing. >> she's live in northern liberties, vittoria.

15 degrees from this time yesterday, 16-degree dew point drop in reading as that dryer air work its way in. we have sunny skies once again testimony and by even of the week with that high still off to the west, temperatures may even be below average for a couple of days here. it will feel fantastic as humidity continues to drop, rest of the week, we are in the pleasant if not awesome range and may start to creep up that humidity value by the weekend. the just a bit by saturday. closer look we will zoom in on the enhanced satellite. the this is tropical storm erika coming up, justin drabick will have more on that storm and what to expect for rest of the tropical season. for us mainly clear, comfortable at 65 degrees. for your wednesday mostly sunny, nice and warm at 85. down the shore a beautiful beach day, mostly sunny and nice, 81 degrees. uv index eight. your three day forecast doesn't get much better then this. i think not. eighty-five tomorrow. eighty-three both thursday and friday. sunshine and low humidity. over the weekend it may start to steam up a bit.

we will talk about thunderstorms creeping back in the seven kay forecast in just a few minutes but for now lets send it out to meteorologist justin drabick with the latest on the active tropics, hi there justin. >> good afternoon kate. this is time of the year when we start paying closer attention to the tropics as we near the peak of the hurricane season which is september 10th, just two and a half weeks away. over past few weeks things are firing up in the atlantic. lets talk about typically what we see up through this point. our average tropical activity, through this date, typically we have four name storms with one hurricane and no major hurricanes. but so far this year pretty much on average, we have five named storms. we had one hurricane which was danny and that did became a major hurricane for a short time but we are where we should be. forecast will be for strengthening el nino which is warmer pacific ocean water temperatures. that impact the atlantic hurricane season. it brings a less active

season. that is good news. causes stronger wind sheer over the atlantic so faster wind help rip apart the storms. these tropical systems have a hard time developing. we have erika out there right now. it is a tropical storm, wind currently at the 40 miles an hour right now, and again, it is moving rapidly to the west, at 20 miles an hour. here's the official track over the northern and lesser anilles, puerto rico and dominican republic by even of the week. with the storm strengthening to category one hurricane status by week even, sat the day and sunday this storm will be threatening bohamas and possibly even south florida. this track is still uncertain. it is early in the game. we have vacation plans to the south florida, bohamas, island over next few days, just watch out for rough weather. keep in mind peak hurricane season is september 10th. season runs all the way to november 30th. live from the sky deck i'm meteorologist justin drabick. now back to you in the studio. >> j.d., thanks very much. a local haunt add tracks is looking for some scary

i'm ukee washington. here's is what happening. a man who jumped the white house fence in march was fatally shot by police at chester county justice center. authorities say curtis smith attacked one deputy with the knife and then another deputy shot and killed him. philadelphia police are investigating discovery of three decomposing bodies in a garage in strawberry mansion. authorities say that the garage is owned by the owner of the now closed powell funeral home. no arrests have been made. and another losing day on wall street, the dow jones climbed 441 points, before reversing course, closing down at 204, kate. what a beautiful afternoon

has turnout to be, nice, warm but not as humid as it was yesterday and humidity continues to drop tonight. we have more sunshine ahead this week. again, comfortable humidity levels through friday but we have to keep an eye on tropical storm erika. we will have latest track on that storm and tell you if anything else is going on in the tropics coming up in the seven day forecast in just a few minutes, ukee. an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow in the death of indy car driver justin wilson. the 37 year-old was struck in the head by debris at pocono race way sunday and died a day later. as jeff glure reports the the auto racing world is mourning loss of one of the most popular drivers. this was the crash that led to the death of justin wilson. he wasn't in the car that wrecked. a piece of flying debris from the crash racer struck him in the head knocking him unconscious. wilson was air lifted to the hospital but he never recovered. >> justin wilson died this evening as a result of the head injury that he sustained yesterday at the pocono speed

way. >> reporter: the 37 year-old, a seven time indy car winner, was one of the most well like and most well respected drivers on the circuit. >> days like they're extremely hard, it is challenging as today is and yesterday was, you know, he is doing what he loved to do and what we all loved to do. >> reporter: and ed carpenter knows firsthand racing cars for a living can be deadly dangerous. that is his car exploding in the wall at 200 miles an hour during a practice run earlier this year. up like nascar where drivers are fully enclosed, indy car racers sit in a open cockpit. there hasn't been a death in the nascar race in 14 years not since dale earnhardt was killed in daytona in 2001. safety concerns for drivers in open cars isn't a new issue. last year james was hospitalized and diagnosed with the concussion after being struck in the hit with debris, from a car driven by

from the time that she was two years old this child actress, has starred in dozens of commercials, tv shows and movies alongside hollywood's elite like sarah silverman, kevin bacon and richard dry fuss. >> i'm just scared to go back to school. >> reporter: samantha got the call june 12th just days before the end of the school year. administrators at john hancock elementary in northeast philadelphia telling her a girl in her daughter's second grade class wrote a threatening message as a way to bully shane. >> she has stolen her markers, her crayons, she will kick the back of her chair, she has pushed her in the bathroom stall. i thought it was kids stuff up until the death threat. >> reporter: coleman tried to have her daughter transferred but they cited policy saying there needed to be a direct assault. we asked what the district says is being done they sent us a statement saying we are in ongoing conversation was miss coleman to demonstrate our commitment to provide shane with a safe, caring

environment, at the hancock school. coleman says she has removed shane from the school district and looking for a way to home school her daughter. shane says that he didn't want to leave. >> if it is to do the right thing to get away from her, then i'm going to do it. >> reporter: decision samantha says no child should have to make. in northeast philadelphia, steve paterson for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". workers at taj mahal casino in atlantic city are preparing for a possible strike. members of the local 54 union loaded a storage pod with strike essentials including cots, tents and much more. the casino workers union says it will give billion air karl icon one last chance by reinstating employee health and pension benefits. new jersey has struck out again in its efforts to legally offer sports bet to go help the state's struggling casinos and race tracks. today a federal appeals court panel in philadelphia upheld the federal ban on sports bet nothing all but delaware and three other states. but two-one ruling left the
