from the photographer who was killed is still disturbing. >> the victim's 24 cereal allison parker and 27-year-old adam ward third victim the subject of the interview is in surgery. we get the latest now from cbs news correspondent kenneth cra craig. >> reporter: reporter allison parker and her photographer adam ward were in the middle of a live shot at bridge water plaza this morning when a gunman opened fire killing them both. the shooting happened while parker was interviewing a woman on life television. the anchor was rattled when the station cut back quickly to the studio. shortly afterward the station's general manager addressed viewers. >> they are working very diligent toll track down both the motive and the person responsible for this terrible crime against two fine journalists. i cannot tell you how much they were loved. >> the camera kept rolling and caught a glimpse of the shooter.

authorities say it was a close call for two officers who were about to be ambushed. "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch has that for story from west philadelphia. >> reporter: philadelphia police holding the scene of a shooting involving one of their own. an armed man who ran from the law taking down by an officer's bullet. >> i'm sure he newt risks of chasing an armed suspect. he saw the male with the gun and chased him any way. he didn't stop. he didn't wait for his partner. that's our job. >> the captain notion the officers who's team work netted the suspect. about 6:00 a.m. police say a victim reported being robbed at gun point while walking to work. the victim gave a description helping officers begin their search for the suspect they found a match while cruising the area of 200 edgewood street. one officer got out of the car to pursue the man on foot. >> the male suspect turned the corner and started running north on 61st street. stopped one or two houses in and turned around and waited to

ambush the officer that was chasing him on foot. >> reporter: meantime police say the second officer pursued from behind the wheel stopping to corner the suspect and order him to drop the gun. authorities say he refused. >> i heard two pops. i paid no particular attention. >> reporter: likely the sound of the suspect being taken down. shot in the stomach. his gun nearby was later identified bite victim. neighbors say had this shooting happened just an hour later, there would have been a line of people here waiting for the bus. a line of people that would have been caught in the line of fire. the suspect was taken to presbyterian in critical condition and was rushed into surgery. in west philadelphia, justin finch cbs3 "eyewitness news". 25 philadelphia police departments supervisors are receiving specialized training today. national experts conducted training on fair and impartial policing. the supervisors are being trained about the risks and dangers of biased policing and all the training will go on for the next two and a half days and

is described as better than your typical cultural diversity training. firefighters battle utility issues while fighting a two alarm apartment fire in king of prussia overnight that left dozens of people homeless. compromised gas line helped feed flames at abrams run apartments long after firefighters placed that structure fire under control. officials say a water main break also jeopardized the water supply but crews were able to tap into another line. one evacuated resident says that he woke up to what started like an explosion. >> i immediately came out, and grabbed the fire extinguisher from my kitchen and ran outside and tried to put it out, but by the time i got there, it already went up vinyl siding and went into the second floor. it was useless. >> the fire damaged all 16 units in that complex but no injuries were reported. the red cross is assisting the

displaced residents. a deadly crash overnight claims the life of a new jersey man. police were dispatched to route 130 in burlington township after report of a single vehicle collision. 22-year-old nathaniel gray died at that scene. the vehicle's other occupant was rush to the hospital and is in stable condition. an investigation into what caused that crash is on-going. early morning surge on wall street as investors are hoping for better day aft a six day slump. stocks search 400 points higher in the opening minutes. investors are looking at the latest corporate earning news. tech stocks are among the big gainers this morning. there's a bit of anxiety after yesterday's early jump and then that late afternoon sell off. economic instability in china and driving the sole at a little at the will the. if you've been outside it is just beautiful out today. >> feels so nice. i passed someone who said it's so cold out. in august, come on. wonderful day. check in right now with kyla grogan the latest on the

here's latest op our breaking news. we have just gotten new information n conflicting reports right now. cbs news is releasing that the suspect in the wdbj shooting shot himself but we're now hearing again from cbs news that he is still alive and in critical condition. you're looking live at the scene on interstate. this is the west of the washington, d.c. area. he was in pursuit we're told and this is the man the shooter who we're now told shot himself but could still be alive in critical condition. we're waiting to confirm these facts for you this noon. we're told that he shot and killed wdbj news reporter allison parker and her photographer alan ward. we're told the woman was shot and now is in surgery. but again this just coming down that cbs news is reporting the suspect in that shooting is still alive. we'll keep working on this and

>> it is a whale of a show off the coast of monterey californ california. take look at these incredible images. a pod of hump back whales splashing and spraying in the warm waters. as you can imagine it is a lot of fun for the tourists but also great for marine biologists who say the whales are after one thing. >> the answer snickers bar in the monterey bar. pretty much everything wants to eat them. >> they're look looking for plankton but leave other sea live closer to the shore. as for warm water, el nino -- kyla is contributing to all of that. >> that's correct. talking about the warming of the water. changes the patterns of things. >> on passing pacific. but in the atlantic we're watching tropical storm erika two exactly we've got a lot to talk about. beautiful wet but tropical storm that could threaten florida coming towards us. >> keeping an eye on it. >> that could influence our weather. make the up the coast. let's talk about this beautiful day that we have out there. it is gorgeous and it's not going to last just today but the neck two days, thursday and

friday also going to be stunni stunning. but first let's take look at the tropical storm. it is tropical storm erika and as you take a look at it here, you can see that it is starting to get its act together convection wise. started blowing up just a touch as we take look at the wind right now sustained winds at 45 miles per hour and you can see the movement is west at about 17 miles per hour. so it's moving at a pretty decent clip this is what has people concerned based on the models we now have as you can see it has a tracking and strengthening right towards monday and it looks like it would impact florida as a category one. now we are still a little early. we are still keeping eye on this when it comes to hurricane they can be unpredictable that's not to say that is necessarily exactly what will happen but it is to say this certainly something we're going to keep an eye on. hurricane season as you can see peaks about september 10th. so if you're thinking is this the right time frame could we see more of this? we could definitely see more of this. just before that peak season. we don't have those concerns today here. taking live look at our neighborhood network. rehoboth stun dag i watch the

beach from go from empty to filled up with everyone there with their beach umbrellas. 73 degrees right now it is a beautiful day to be out at the shore. temperatures right now in philadelphia 79 degrees. you can see out in poconos about 68. 78 in wilmington and wildwood coming in at 80 degrees. so already hitting that 80-degree mark. in fact let's zoom into the shore where if you're there this week having a nice run of it. 78 right now in barnegat light. 80s all the way down to cape may. so it's a lovely day out there and the wind is staying nice and calm. i'll call this practically perfect. sunny skies, check. warm temperatures, yes, but not too warm. low humidity. you bet. fantastic day out there and light wind exactly what you want when you're heading outdoors. and we also have storm scan3 here showing you that it is nice and clear. we bare vol any clouds in the sky. look all the way back to western pennsylvania to find high clouds rolling in. high pressure is in control. no doubt about it. and that's where we'll see not just today but as we head into thursday, another pleasant day with temperatures in the 80s. and keeping those humidity levels very nice.

sunny and nice on friday. those 80s continue. and then we got a little bit of a shift here. we'll start to see that humidity come in and we're going to see temperatures start to rise up a bit as well. so we'll see a bit of a warmer weekend. but today if you're at the shore 80 degrees. beautiful. we do have a moderate rip current risk. so something to be mindful of. we've got kids that want to head into the water much also the sun is out in full force. uv index an eight. be careful with that sunscreen too today. 84 degrees that will be our high. mostly sunny a nice day out there as you can city night nice and clear. 65 degrees. nice and comfortable. sunset will be about 7:42. very pretty one if you want to see the sunset nice clear skies as we take look at the tech say day forecast. not just today gorgeous weather thursday and friday. starts to warm up over the weekend, yes, do you see a 91-degree high next tuesday. so you know i'd like to think oh, august is done. we're done with the heat. that's not the way it works. i think we got another push of heat coming our way. >> not quiet.
