remembering, darryl dawkins, the sixers legend, was a nightmare for backboard around the nba, he has died. tonight we're taking a look back on his life and his career. dawkins was a ground breaker in the a association, first player ever drafted out of high school to play pro ball. hello everyone i'm ukee washington. i'm jessica dean. "eyewitness sports" reporter pat gallon joins us more on chocolate thunder. a sad day. >> reporter: really is a sad day. we mourn the the loss of the philadelphia basketball legend the man we called chocolate thunder darryl dawkins has died at the age of 58. darryl dawkins best known for rolling the rim among other things, dawkins fame rose after shattering backboard and naming his dunks. have you ever heard of the rim wreck error look out below? those are a couple names he gave to those powerful slams. that great nickname chocolate thunder which was one of many was given to him by stevey wonder. drafted by sixers in 1975, dawkins was first player dover

make the jump from high school straight to the nba. philadelphia basketball legend sonny hill talks about how dawkins was larger than life. >> he was shaquille o'neal, before shaquille o'neal. just imagine if darryl dawkins, was able to play at this era of the nba, with all of the coverage that they have, and the way that they pick up things from the different sports outlets, and so many other ways, he would have been huge. he was big in his day. but he would have been bigger today because he had that kind of personality. >> 76ers ceo scott o'neill released a statement following the the passing of dawkins, it said in part we have lost a dear friend and iconic figure both on and off the court. we remember fondly not only his thunder us dunks but more importantly his powerful presence and personality. his family also released a statement saying quote darryl touched the the hearts and spirits of the so many with his big smile and personality, ferocious dunks but more than

anything his huge loving heart. we will have reaction to the passing of darryl dawkins later on in sports. >> sad day. >> giant on the man on and off the court. i was a friend of his. the the man was a beast on the court and off but during his retirement days he was a teddy bear. all about the the community. >> gentle giant. >> no doubt bit. i was at a event not too long ago, and big fellow there right there on the right had word of wisdom for young people in the neighborhood talking about sports. he talk about mainly the game of life. believe you me he had their undivided attention. such a gentle giant. darryl dawkins will be missed. pat, thanks very much. we will have more later tonight. now to the latest on the investigation in the news crew killed in virginia. state police searched vester flannigan's apartments for clues in the former tv reporter's troubled past. flannigan who was known on eras bryce williams shot and killed reporter allison parker, and cameraman, adam ward, and wounded another woman during a live interview yesterday. he later killed himself.

flannigan was fired from the station, in 2013 for poor performance and a series of conflicts with co-workers. he left behind a long letter that paints a picture of a disturbed man out for revenge. keep it right here on "eyewitness news" for continuing coverage of the tragedy in virginia. you can find both updates and also tributes to the the victims on cbs philly.com. you think you might need a septa regional pass for papal visit? no worries, there are plenty left. it seems demand has been lighter than expected. septa says there are more than 100,000 regional rail passes still available. while some fear they have to walk miles to see the pope, septa says the the pennsylvania parkway is less than a 2-mile walk from some stations. septa says it will run airport line every 30 minutes, that week even. more than a million people are expect to descend on philadelphia, for the papal visit. a camden native is gearing up for the possibility of being the official sign language interpreter alongside pope francis. alexandria hoff has that story. >> reporter: all those there are three people in this room, this is a one on one conversation, the interpreter is simply there to lend a voice. >> when i heard that victor was going to be the interpreter for the pope i was thrilled because he was a student of ours. >> reporter: she's referring to camden county college alumni victor collaroso who has been asked to potentially interpret for pope francis in philadelphia we caught up with him, from his home in arizona over skype. >> i didn't even have to think, i said definitely, i will fly from arizona and will be there and do what you ask of me. >> reporter: this is point where you should know victor has not had it easy. he grew up in camden. at 29 his wife passed away. he says with her, he lost his faith, until he heard pope francis speak. >> i think from then on my faith started just coming back to me. >> reporter: so to him, this chance is the ultimate blessing. but remember, pope francis,

image of tropical stormer contact we will have the latest information on the track of that storm, what areas i should say should be concerned about the path of erika and if we should be concern here in philadelphia and along new jersey coastline. i will have more when i join you inside, back to you. new information tonight on the chester county courthouse shooting from earlier this week. it turns out that the deputy kevin bro was not injured when 34 year-old curtis smith attempted to slash him. the knife only hit his protective vest. he was injured by one of the bullets fired from another deputy. smith was hit by two shots and later pronounced dead at the hospital. >> the injury to the deputy's hand actually was caused by the gun shots. so since he was so close to the knife wielding man, one of the shots actually blew his microphone off of his chest, and then, hit him, in the finger. >> he was treated for his hand injury. the the district attorney says

smith, who once jumped the white house fence had been dealing with mental health issues, d.a. repeated he believed that the shooting of smith was justified. a tragedy in chester county and a young boy is killed in an accident on a farm in honey brook. authorities say that the six year-old suffered from multiple injuries, and he was pronounced dead at paoli hospital around 1:00 p.m. yesterday. no other details about the accident had been released at this time. the city of camden is standing up to drug trafficking and after dozens of drug-related fatalities they are attempting to eliminate problem by cleaning up a neighborhood literally. "eyewitness news", new jersey reporter cleve bryan has that story. >> reporter: whether they are playing catch or practicing gymnastics linda a car era does not let her kid and friend venture far from the bergen square home. >> they stay next to the house or go to the playground and play at the school. other than that they don't know anywhere else. >> reporter: completely off limiting ago cross the street toward broadway which is is notorious for drugs,

prostitution and other crimes. >> these are locations where people are overdosing and dying. it is not nice for people living around here. >> reporter: there have been 359 reported overdose was 31 fatalities in camden. august has been particularly deadly with 71 overdosees and seven fatalities. officials know they cannot arrest their way out of the situation so they are taking a more local stick approach -- holistic approach. public works began a clean up effort to remove trash and trim over grown fields. the city marked thrash dilapidated structures for emergency demolition, put delinquent property owners on notice and cut down trees that block streetlighting. this type determine i can needle sums up the illegal, activity in this area and you will it takes is over grown weeds to provide just enough cover to buy, sell and shoot up drugs. that is why the city is put be an emphasis on cleaning up, all of the trash and over grown vegetation. >> when there are more good

the best days of my life. we are down the shore here in the great wildwood beaches here. look at those hands up there, the american cross. we are live on the beach here, where we're in the big weekend this weekend. it is, these babies, what you are looking at right here, these big huge beach monster trucks. they are doing a huge weekend friday, saturday, sunday, beach races, off the boardwalk, on the sand. it will be huge, i actually, a little bit earlier on, got to ride one of those big rides myself. interesting thing was first thing looking at it i said how do you even get into that thing. then you have to jump through the under belly and then climb in there, underneath, and once you are positioned in there the belt bucket goes on, you press ignition, start button and get that thing in gear and baby, you are cruising. i was trying to do figure eight's. that wasn't the best, but difficult make it up and over

saturday downtown, it is all about shopping at shopping district. that is from 9:00 to 7:00 p.m. and then as you can tell behind me by those hand up, look at chuck in the truck doing his thing. he knows exactly what he is doing. we are having so much fun here down the shore and if you can, jump out here this weekend and take a ride with these guys because like i said, it was most memorable thing i have ever done in my life. i'm not one of those people where i'm like let's jump off this or that. i'm not the most adventurous type but this was something that, i'm now a little bit addicted too. >> i told you, guys, monster truck again soony will take your word for it. nicely done. >> thanks. >> doing witt style. >> let's put it on, guys. >> game on. >> pennsylvania spca teams up with the ride hair service uber. >> yes, using the app, uber customers in philadelphia were able to request 15 minutes of play time with puppies for $20 a. money raised through unusual

three from campbell's field looks fantastic. live neighborhood network at middletown ship high school in cape may courthouse whiz looks great. businesspy clouds, blue skies, comfortable 73 degrees. that feels unheard of for this time of the year. storm scan three shows it clear all across the northeast and in our neck of the woods, quiet, just a few cloud. we are not expecting any appreciable rainfall and our forecast at all through middle of the next week. right now 80 degrees in philadelphia 73 allentown. seventy-nine in millville. seventy-three in reading. it feels fall-like in mount pocono at 66. high pressure in control for next few days. temperatures begin to climb as we get on the warm side. as this high moves east we will get southeasterly flow with the clockwise circulation around a high. temperatures back in the upper 80's on saturday and sunday nearing 90, very warm and more humid as well this front should stay off to the west and we will get into a blocking high situation right in the start of the next week and much of next week as well.

we will start to steam up under that blocking high but should stay dry for us. one area that is not the dry that has been dealing with flood to go day, lesser anttilles through dominican republic this area was in the the drought. they could use the rainfall but erika, too much too soon for that area we have seen flooding out there as well throughout the day. thinks the latest track from the national hurricane center on erika right now. graces florida coast. back further west then it was last night. made a move to the east no you back to the west but there is very warm the water here. by late next tuesday we could see a developing strengthening storm sitting off the florida coastline. this is one to watch if you have interest in the south east or through south florida. for us doesn't look like it will be a big deal but we will keep an eye on it for you. friday mostly sunny and nice. eighty-four. down the shore things look fantastic. we have sunshine for next few days. slowly warming as we head in the weekend. poconos also looking quite nice with sunshine and just getting in the 80's by sunday. eyewitness weather seven day forecast looks great, it does heat up in to next week and

we lost a giant of the man on so many levels. >> gentle though. >> oh, yeah. >> so smooth but yet so powerful. that was darryl dawkins, the the basketball world mourns the loss of the man known as chocolate thunder, as dawkins died of a heart attack this morning. he was 58. doctor dunkin'stein another many nicknames played parts of the 14 nba seasons, seven with the sixers. he was a trailblazer off the court becoming first high schooler to jump to the nba. the nba community has been reacting to the loss of the gentle giant, allen iverson saying, condolence suggest to the family of darryl dawkins a great man, your smile, personality , energy will be

truly missed. jahlil okafor saying darryl dawkins was an icon as's sixers legend but more as a person. he will be truly missed by all, rip hashtag chocolate then are. on saturday eagles play all important third preseason game begins aaron rodgers and green bay packers. we are not sure how much sam bradford will play, chip kelly was none in committal on that subject but he did say progression of bradford has been outstanding. >> he is better today then when he started on august 1st. he is continuing to, getting comfortable with what we're doing. i see him not making the same mistakes. he is really a coachable guy. he has a great understanding of the game of football. >> phillies will look to avoid a four game sweep by the mets tonight, phillies have been lit up all series by the mets offense. insuring scored 31 runs and hit ten home runs through three games. aaron harang will look to stop phillies eight game losing streak begins those mets.
