>> ♪ >> and developing right now on "eyewitness news," a search is on for a father who police say abducted his own son after attacking and beating the boy's mother. thanks for joining us tonight, i'm diana rocco. natasha brown is off. this all unfolded in west philadelphia on the 5500 block of walnut street. "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson joins us live at southwest detectives tonight with the very latest. good evening, steve. >> reporter: diana, obviously the good news here is that that two-year-old little boy was found safe. but the man you're describing,

the man that police say did the things you just described was not found, still on the loose and that's concerning for the philadelphia police department. so, the first thing i want to do is throw up a picture of 25-year-old jonathan elliott. take a look here. police say they were called to a home in the 5500 block of walnut street at about 3:00 this morning. when they arrived, the mother of that two-year-old jayden elliott, jayden's mother told officers that jayden's dad broke in, punched jayden's mother several times and then kidnapped the young boy. now, police did announce the boy was safe and being reunited with his mom at about 3:00 this afternoon. police are not saying, though, when, where or how the boy was located, just that they are looking again for jonathan elliott. if you know anything about this case or anything about the circumstances related to this case, you're asked to call police immediately. we'll have the number to southwest detectives on our web site at cbsphilly.com.

for now, we're live at southwest detectives, i'm steve patterson, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> all right, steve, thank you. erika is no longer a tropical storm but it has left a path of death and destruction in the wake. authorities say at least 20 people are dead and nearly 50 missing on the small eastern caribbean island of dominica. in haiti one person died in a mudslide just north of port-au-prince and at least four others were killed in a traffic accident. in florida, officials say residents should prepare and continue to monitor the storm's path. let's check in with meteorologist justin drabick who has been tracking the remnants of erika tonight from our weather center. justin, what should the u.s. man land still be expecting from this storm? >> diana, even though the storm has lost its tropical characteristics it still contains some heavy thunderstorms. we're looking at potential heavy rainfall for the islands, cuba, the bahamas and south central florida. the storm is losing it's tropical characteristic.

doesn't have that circulation so not very impressive looking on the satellite but it's over eastern cuba right now tracking to the west and northwest. it will be impacting the bahamas and south central florida. the good news is they need rain in florida but they could be dealing with possibly two, three, maybe even 4-inches of rain by early next week through tuesday as the remnants move on shore. if you have travel plans down to the bahamas florida early next week watch out for some thunderstorms and winds may gust up to 25 miles per hour. so, back home a warm day today, 87 degrees officially, above the average high of 84, record high is 98. we're mid 80's in trenton and philadelphia, mid 80's in allentown. right around 80 degrees into south jersey and near the shore points. we're quiet on storm scan3, just a few clouds around tonight. we're going finish the weekend dry but we're going to heat things up tracking another heat wave. those details in a few minutes. diana. >> justin thank you. 10 years ago today hurricane katrina hit the gulf coast. the monster storm flooded new orleans destroying parts of

the city and filling it with desperation. a beck cade later the big easy has fought hard to be the city it once was. cbs news correspondent juju chang has more. >> reporter: from saint bernard parish in new orleans to the lower ninth ward. >> ♪ >> reporter: the victims of hurricane katrina were remembered saturday. the girlfriend coast is reflecting on the tenth anniversary of the monster storm which flooded 80 percent of new orleans and claimed more than 1800 lives. >> let's be clear. today is about commemoration specifically we are going to remember but as soon as we finish this, we're going to get back to work. there will be 10,000 volunteers on the streets of this city of new orleans today. >> reporter: thousands of volunteers are participating in a city-wide day of service with 100 rebuilding projects by planting this community garden. >> they're working hard, they're respecting the garden, they're all very nice and we're all building a

relationship. >> reporter: many young people are getting involved, too, determined to help shape the new new orleans. >> my favorite thing to make would be the sweet mash. >> reporter: not long ago, 19-year-old delvin davis were you considered an at-risk youth. >> it's everywhere around here. >> reporter: but he escaped a life on the streets with the workforce training program. students run a restaurant called cafe reconcile. delvin also mentors children and he's optimistic about the future. >> this my city. i mean vikes to believe in my city. >> ♪ >> reporter: a city remembering a dark past but charging ahead with resounding resilience. rija jang, cbs news new orleans. >> a gas station worker offered to help a customer make coffee and then groped her. he faces indecent assault charges. police say he assaulted the woman in radnor at the shell

gas station on east lancaster avenue. they also suspect that he's done it before. police are asking any other potential victims to come forward. police officers from across the region have brought their canine companions to montgomery county for a weekend of competition. "eyewitness news" reporter syma chowdhury has the story from northwest. >> reporter: zeke may look friendly. this harrisburg police dog and officer are getting a certification. >> these certifications help us in court, they help us keep our dogs proficient. >> reporter: he's a pro after surviving a gunshot wound from a suspect who was running from police. >> he was shot 2-inches back from the corner of his mouth. >> reporter: zeke and others are being tested on their agile. this two day events takes place at wendell state park.

>> the guys have been working on it throughout the year and they're here to showcase themselves. >> reporter: in the agility tests. >> really appreciate the train they go go through because it's hard, it's really tough stuff that they do. >> reporter: are you impressed? >> i'm very impressed. >> reporter: and after a day of challenges, the dogs who pass come back sunday to test their criminal apprehension and their handler protection skills. >> it's an opportunity at the end to come out and see the dogs, speak to the officers and just learn about what we do exactly. >> reporter: but for zeke he already passed the hardest test police dogs face in the line of duty. >> for officers 's lives that he saved, in my eyes, zeke is a true hero. >> reporter: syma chowdhury cbs news. >> the eagles host the green bay packers tonight in game three of the preseason. tonight should go a long way towards deciding who makes the final roster and who gets the cut. lesley van arsdale joins us

now with more on what's going to happen tonight. >> this is a big one. it's the all important third preseason game typically the most important of the four because the starters tend to see the most playing time of the preseason. aaron rogers is not expected to play. the last time they played in green bay they lost 53 to 20 but we have a new quarterback with sam bradford. the question is how many snaps will he take. i spoke with the voice of the eagles, merrill reese to get his take on the bradford situation. >> if i had to guess, i would think he plays the entire first quarter and possibly into the second quarter until the chip kelly really feels he's comfortable out there. if he runs a couple series it might only be one quarter but if he has his problems in the first quarter and looks like he needs a little more work, i think he'll get work into the second quarter. he will get no more than a half if that. >> well, we have also yet to see kiko alonzo who was traded for lesean mccoy from

>> yeah, we're going to heat it up though. september is going to bring in some heat. looks like we're tracking our fifth heat wave of the season. >> nice. >> we're not done just yet. also bringing back some humidity so certainly next weekend labor day weekend probably a lot of people going to be hitting the delaware beach. right now the forecasts is okay but still a week away, things could change. right now looking live look at rehoboth beach, 76 degrees. southeast winds off the water, a nice comfortable night shaping up along the delaware beaches and of course south jersey as well looking good tonight. so far for the month of august we're almost finished. averaging over 2 degrees, above average when you average all the highs and the lows together. we need some rain. only .9-inches of rain still philadelphia international airport. that's almost two and a quarter inches below average. 94 degrees was the highest temperature. the trend right now is staying above average. 83 is where we should be starting next week on sunday but here's our forecast high temperature line in yellow, well above average. looks like another stretch of 90's returns in the forecast. 86 in philadelphia now, 84

allentown, 83 reading, upper 70's to near 80 in south jersey. humidity levels really not that bad today, current dewpoint temperature at 61 degrees. we'll take that for late summer, again not bad here on the list but again these dewpoints will start to climb into the steamy category over the next few days. again storm scan3 looking quiet across the delaware valley. just a few clouds will stroll through the region through the overnight and then tomorrow you may notice a few more clouds as there's a little weak disturbance that passes by to our north and west. tomorrow good start to the day, sunshine, some of those clouds start to develop during the afternoon. there could be a sprinkle tomorrow evening up in the poconos. everybody else is it stay dry. overall nice finish to the weekend. more clouds start to return on monday but still keeping things dry. we will see some sunshine. temperatures actually warm up for the start of the work week. highs approaching that 90-degree mark. so, here we go. talk about the numbers tomorrow t it will be a mild start, 60's to about 70 degrees early sunday morning. by 2 o'clock, we're approaching that 90-degree

mark for the inland spots, wilmington, philadelphia, trenton, we'll head up north to the lehigh valley, mid and uner 80's for those midafternoon temperatures. closer so philadelphia again upper 80's to low 90's potentially here and then into south jersey a little bit of a nice relief there, breeze out of the southwest along the shore points, upper 70's to low 80's along the shore and delaware beaches. it will be a warm night, few clouds around 70 degrees for center city, some 60's in the suburbs. a hot day on sunday, partly sunny skies, humidity not bad just yet. i think you really start to feel the difference on monday, a temperature again right around 90 degrees. at the shore low 80's for sunday, partly sunny skies, ocean water temperature comfortable in the mid 70's. still got to wear that sunblock. lot of high u.v. index there going on at seven out of 10. burn time is still pretty quick even this time of year. 90 degrees for the high on sunday and monday with partly sunny skies. we'll go mostly sunny, so tuesday, wednesday, low 90's. we'll keep it in the lower 90's on thursday and then by

the end of the week slightly cooler, upper 80's but still on the humid side but that's a dry forecast. we do need some rain but overall if you like the heat you're going to like the start of september. >> winter is going to be here before we know it so summer can stay as long as it wants as far as i'm concerned. hey, football is starting already. that walready. >> that's right. eagles at the time set to take on the pack jersey in green bay. the packers seem to be playing it safe. aaron rogers who has been a greatest for the birds new look defense. the voice of the eagles merrill reese what he's looking for tonight. >> it's interesting because the thing i most wanted to see going into this game is the eagles defense against one of the great quarterbacks in the national football league, aaron rogers but he's not expected to play. they have a couple of offensive line men injured. they're not going to put him in harm's way. so, we're not going to get that test but i still want to see cohesiveness, i still want to seat pass rush, i still

want to seat defensive backs aggressively make plays. on the offensive side of things you want to see solid offensive line play especially from the guards who are guys in position for the first time as starters on a regular basis. >> the phillies continue their series with the padres down at the ballpark. phils managed to stop a four game skid last night thanks to the new ace, aaron nola. nola dominated the padres last night, the phillies first round pick last year pitching like it went seven innings only gave up two hits and one run struck out six. impressive so far. the offense breaking it open in the eighth. cameron rough right here big blow, crushes this three-run homer deep into the stands there. phillies win seven-one. rays and royals last night. morales with a drive. the ray's kevin cheer meyer who clearly miss judges this one. dramatically trying to make this catch. it hits the catwalk. you have to admire this effort

there. royals won the game three to two. talk about an upset. american pharaoh seemed like he just couldn't be beaten today in the traverse stakes at saratoga. someone unseeded the king. key nice making that big push down the stretch and pulled off the upset. a great race an great win for keen ice. american pharaoh finished second. the team from louis ferry pennsylvania has advanced to the little league world championship game. they'll be taking on japan in the finals. congratulations. >> all right.

>> a housing complex in jersey city goes out with a bang. and there it goes. the montgomery gardens were demolished today to make way for a new housing project worth at least $100 million. the complex was more than six decades old. city officials say the new project will provide more affordable housing options for seniors. it's an annual rite of passage this time of year, freshmen at rowan university are moving into the residence halls for the fall semester today. "eyewitness news" in glassboro gloucester county as the class of 2019 got some help from family and friends. the students are excited to meet new people and they are bringing a lot of stuff with them. 400 volunteers helped the more than 2,000 freshmen move into eight different residence ha
