>> ♪ >> breaking news right now on "eyewitness news." an off duty police officer has died after a hit and run. good evening everyone, i'm day. natasha brown has the night off. this happened in the oxford circle neighborhood. "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson is live at the scene tonight with the very latest on this. steve. >> reporter: and, diana,

that scene is directly behind me. first thing i want to you do is get you eyes on. police have just loaded that officer's motorcycle onto a flatbed and have taken it away but you can see where they've power washed the scene and then some of the car parts that were strewn about after that fatal crash and the point of impact, you can see some of that still on the roadway, police appear to be breaking down the scene as accident investigators continue to do their work here. so, here's what we know. philadelphia police have recently confirmed that they have a person of interest in custody that they are questioning from this fatal hit and run. police say the crash happened shortly after about 4:00 this afternoon right here on the boulevard at devereaux avenue. police telling us the suspect vehicle struck the officer on that officer's bike and then fled the scene. then a short time later police located the striking vehicle and had a person of interest in custody. meanwhile, the officer rushed to aria torresdale hospital in

very critical condition, clinging to life and then we're told the officer died from their injuries at about 5:00 this afternoon. not long after the crash, we spoke to an eyewitness who says she saw the crash and citizens who tried to stop the suspect vehicle after that fatal crash. listen to this. >> i saw a car hit and run, hit a motorcycle and it was another car that tried to stop the other car of getting away because he was trying to run, hit and run and the man unfortunately didn't make it. >> reporter: and one last live look at the scene many you can see police continuing to hold the scene just breaking down now as again, investigators continue to do their work. preliminarily we're hearing that officer is from the 12th district likely in their 40's but as soon as we know more information we of course will let you know both here and on our web side at cbsphilly.com. for now, we're live in northeast philadelphia, i'm

steve patterson, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> all right, steve, some sad news there. we will certainly stay on top of this story. thank you. meanwhile a delaware county police officer is recovering this evening after he was shot twice during a standoff. it happened early this morning on the 600 block of mohawk avenue in norwood. police arrested the suspected gunman. he was arraigned today in darby and that's where we find "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff. alex. >> reporter: well, diana, i was told that this suspect was processed as soon as possible. those charges now including a 58d assault and attempted murder. with his face in his hands 36 you'll darryl burt was arraigned for a district judge just 12 hours after police say he took two shots at someone who was frying to help him. around 1:00 a.m., crews arrived to the 600 block of mohawk avenue in norwood to find a suicidal man barricaded inside his apartment.

>> at one point the door opened and they tried to employ a tase story get the subject at which time the subject shut the door and fired two rounds through the door. >> reporter: on the other side of that door was assisting police officer mark hanley. he was hit in the leg and chest and likely would have been killed if not for his bulletproof vest. officers fired back hitting the suspect in the elbow. >> i heard a gun shot and i jumped out of the bed. >> reporter: juliet and her fiancée were woken up by police and told to evacuate. for an hour negotiators worked with burt who eventually agreed to come out. juliet says that same man helped her move in and she saw him just hours before the shooting. >> yesterday i was going to the beach so i saw him out here. really nice guy. so i really don't know what happened. >> reporter: both officer and suspect were treater at separate hospitals and released. for hanley, he was ushered home by a fleet of squad cars and collingdale fire trucks where he doubles as chief. >> he's a good leader. he's a community man.

he's out there on a fire truck or police car, he's always out there helping people. >> reporter: the suspect didn't take his own life or anyone else's. we touched base with officer hanley this afternoon. we found out he's with family and resting, something we wanted to respect because he has certainly earned it. as for darryl burt a preliminary hearing is scheduled for september 9th. alexandria hoff, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> police have made a dui arrest in a deadly crash. it happened on woodhaven road near thornton road in northeast philadelphia shortly after midnight. police say a 26-year-old man was drunk when he crashed into another vehicle with a man and a woman inside. the 53-year-old man died at the hospital. that woman is still in critical condition tonight. police say the drunk driver was not injured. a two-car accident causes one driver to smash into a west kensington store front. this is the scene around noon today at the intersection of north ninth street and lehigh

avenue. police say that a victim in one of the cars had to be extricated by fire crews. no word on the extent of the person's injuries or what caused the crash. turn nothing weather, it looks like we are in for another hot stretch. meteorologist justin drabick is on the sky deck tonight. justin you've been tracking this but what a beautiful weekend it's been. >> you know, it has been. it's always good news when you have dry conditions for the weekend. you can get outside, get those outdoor plans done, whether it's yard work or hanging out. still need a cool beverage if you're outside tonight, that humidity starting to pump back into the delaware valley. we have a few high clouds rolling in right now but not a whole lot of precipitation to talk about over the next few days. we could be tracking our fifth heat wave of the season. we did make it to 91 degrees. that's above average. we should be in the lower 80's. 83 is our average. well above that. record high, though, is 100 set back in 1953 so still a ways away from those numbers and i don't think we'll see any records any time z upper 80's right now still at the

airport in philadelphia. mid 80's in the lehigh valley. and in berks county right now. we'll head down to south jersey, the delaware beaches, feeling pretty good. nice breeze off the ocean. ocean water temperature in the mid 70's. that brings the air temperatures in the upper 70's to lower 80's this hour. so, not a bad evening shaping up along the shore points. that comfort index starting to go downhill as we look at that dewpoint temperature. right now we're back up into the mid 60's so how does that feel to you? well, pretty much steamy and it will stay on the steamy side really through the upcoming week. even approaching that oppressive feel by the end of the week. storm scan3 shows a little activity in the upper atmosphere producing a few sprinkles in the lehigh valley and poconos. elsewhere we're just dry tonight, partly cloudy skies. here's you remember forecast high tomorrow, eighty one again 90 degrees for philadelphia and mid 80's at the shore and low 80's in the poconos. then even hotter temperatures for the middle of the week. i'll let you know how hot they get coming up in the seven-day forecast in a few more minutes. diana back over to you. >> justin thank you. remnants of once tropical

storm erika is bringing heavy rains and strong winds to florida. the storm caused major destruction in the caribbean before weakening greatly over the past few days. it's still a so,, though. parts of miami have seen 4-inches of rain. south florida remains under a flash flood watch tonight. that stretches through monday morning. a memorial service was held today for a virginia news crew shot and killed during a live broadcast last week. religious leaders coworkers family members gathered to remember alison parker and adam ward at an interfaith ceremony. during the service the general manager of the station where the pair worked spoke about prioritizing mental health treatment. ward's funeral is set for tuesday in roanoke. parker's obituary says after a private memorial service the celebration of her life will happen at a later date. construction is complete on an anti-immigration fence in the country of hungary. the fence she was which was built on the southern border with serbia is meant to keep

out many seeking asylum. officials in budapest say over 60,000 migrants mostly syrians enter the country through a southern border in 2015. the pope is praying for syrian refugees tonight in light of a recent tragedy. he used his weekly prayer this morning to remember the 71 migrants found dead in an abandoned truck on a highway in austria. officials believe those people who were most likely fleeing war torn syria suffocated in the truck. pope francis says these types of crimes "offend the entire human family." and we are counting down to the pope's visit in philadelphia for the world meeting of families. now just 27 days until the arrival of the holy father. we've got a full resource guide up on cbsphilly.com to help you plan for the event. late today, president obama said he's changing the name of an american landmark. the tallest mown main north america known as mount mckinley will now be called denial low. the alaskan elevation named

after former president mckinley in 1917 will return to its traditional native name meaning the high one. the announcement comes just one day before president obama's three-day visit to alaska. now, to campaign 2016. democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders is closing the gap on front runner hillary clinton in iow iowa. a des moines register bloomberg politics poll out yesterday shows sanders just seven points behind clinton, vice president joe biden who hasn't decided whether he will run gets 14 percent of the vote. sanders a self proclaimed socialist senator from vermont has surged in the polls recently declaring his candidacy. most national polls still show clinton with a wide lead in the democratic primary. there is a new champion tonight in little league world series but unfortunately the trophy won't be coming to pennsylvania this year. the red land little league team from york county took an early need against japan in williamsport this afternoon

>> welcome back. the baseball fan who died in an accident at turner field in atlanta has been identified as 60-year-old greg murray. today the braves held a moment of silence in murray's honor before a game against the yankees. murray a long time season ticket holder fell from the upper deck into the lower level stands during the seventh inning of last night's game. he was pronounced dead at the hospital and it is not yet clear what caused that fall. foul play is not suspected. an amazing story. a hiker has been found alive after she vanished for more than a week in the california wilderness. cbs news correspondent brian webb reports on how she was finally found. >> reporter: the hiker was airlifted to a hospital after surviving nine days alone in the sierra nevada mountains. >> she was injured. she does have some broken

bones. >> reporter: 62-year-old was rescued after she used a whistle to alert rescue teams it's a huge relief to harwood's family. >> designed excited. they couldn't stop screaming and crying and yelling amongst themselves and they were fall a car on the way up here. >> reporter: harwood an experienced hiker went missing from her group august 20. the search has been hampered by thick smoke from a nearby wildfire. harwood crawled for two days to reach a creeked. >> she was able to drink from the creek to stay alive. >> reporter: authorities say harwood was weak and exhausted but thankful to be alive. brian webb for cbs news. >> well, it's been a beautiful weekend. >> it has. >> sounds like if you like the heat this week is for you. >> summer weather lovers you're going to love this forecast coming up. we had a nice break from the humidity the past few days but we're bringing it back. go figure. we head into september, we're talking about temps a good 10, maybe even 15 degrees above average. let's break it down. one place to cool off is down at the shore.

nice shot there ocean city live look at the boardwalk and nice night, there's a few clouds around but we'll keep things dry through the rest of tonight and the start of the work week. nice breeze coming in off the openings. starting to really rack up those 90-degree days. we had one today. it's been awhile since we had one but a lot of them did come in july in the first half of august so now we're up to 29 for the year so far in 2015. but nothing even close to 2010, if you remember that, we had 55 days that summer season. 88 degrees right now at the airport in philadelphia, 76 poconos. we're looking at lower 80's around atlantic city right now. how's it going to feel the next few days? we'll bring back steamy conditions for sure. certainly today, monday, tuesday, wednesday it will feel very humid so if you have outdoor plans just brace yourself, make sure you drink plenty of water. we're talking low and potentially mid 90's to some of the afternoon temperatures. couple of little sprinkles northern and western montgomery county right now t-little upper level disturbance rolling through. elsewhere we're just seeing a

mixture of some sunshine and clouds at this hour so we'll call it partly cloudy through the overnight hours. a lot of heat in the central part of the u.s. right now. jet stream is going to move northward. that allowing to it expand eastward so that's why we're going see this persistent hot humid conditions continuing for much of the upcoming week. we have our sixth named tropical system of the year now. this was formed today. this is fred, tropical storm fred just off the coast of africa. winds at 65 miles per hour. expected to intensify into a category one hurricane as it tracks to the north and west but eventually it's going run into cooler water so an unfavorable environment down the road say day four, day five so we're expecting this to weaken back into an area of low pressure, just a tropical depression. this remains out of the open water so no threat to land mass any time soon. a few clouds early tomorrow morning. not a bad start to work or heading back to school. monday afternoon partly sunny conditions continue. we'll clear things out for tuesday. we're back to mostly sunny skies so that's really going to start to heat things up.

starts to get muggy tonight. you're feeling it right now. partly cloudy, 73 for center city. 60's in the suburbs. on monday partly sunny skies, temperature around 90 degrees for philadelphia, surrounding suburbs may drop into the upper 80's. here's your shore forecast for monday p it will be breezy. that southwest wind does kick up at about 10 to 20 miles per hour. it's going to kick up the waves a little bit so moderate threat for rip currents tomorrow. temperatures in the mid 80's. ocean water looking good or feeling good in the mid 70's. here's the extended forecast. we have a hot stretch. low and mid 90's through thursday. then friday we'll see some upper 80's returning and there could be a stray shower or thunderstorm but all in all it's a dry forecast. looking into labor day weekend right now it stays warm and dry, so good pool and beach weather. >> a lot of people are sitting at home groaning but not you. you love this weather. >> i like the heat. keep summer here. not trying to think about snow. >> well, everyone is still talking about the eagles. >> they are. they had to cut down that roster. it had a to be done to 75 players by 4 o'clock on

tuesday, so today they wasted no time trimming things down. they cut loose 12 players to get down state. the only name of note is wide receiver gj kennedy. three more cuts still to come. one player we know who is going the make the team quarterback sam bradford. last night a perfect 10 tour 10 throwing for 121 yards, played only three drives but finished each drive with a touchdown pass. darren sproles, one to tray burton and one to brent celek. after that bradford took the rest of the night off. he deserved it. he'll likely not see any time on thursday and the eagles final preseason game against the jets, both bradford and coach chip kelly spoke after the game. >> well, i think it will be a little bit unrealistic to think that you're going have that type of a game every time out but it was good to see the work we've put in during the week pay off. seemed like we were just firing on all cylinders tonight and we got in a rhythm. hopefully it's something we can continue to do. >> that's the great thing about sam is that he's in the going to rest on anything. he's going to -- he's come

back from -- he missed a lot of football coming into this but he's playing well right now but he can always get better and be sharper and that's the thing i love about him he'll be back on the field on monday firing around trying to get better. >> rest of eagles offense played well. demarco murray six carries for 28 yards, two catches for 12 yards. defense had a couple good plays including a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown by walter thurmond. overall chip kelly was pleased. >> i mean, you got to look at the film but i think we're -- we did some nice things tonight. we'll continue to build on it. >> phillies going for the three game sweep over the padres down at the ballpark. alec asher making his major league debut for the phils. alec's mom sporting her son's jersey. he gives up his first major league home run. matt kemp with a line drive

homer out to left. that gives the padres two-nothing lead. a good major league first, his first major league strikeout. of course the family is very excited to see that. third inning phillies down two-one. justin upton launches this 1242 feet for that solo home run. asher bottom and two-thirds. phillies lose nine to four. things started out so well for the pennsylvania little league world series team after giving up two runs in the first, they came roaring back for 10 runs in the bottom of the inning. a grand slam three run homer but back came japan. they hit five home runs. the teams combined for 30 hits and seven home runs. sadly the can i describe from pennsylvania lost today 18 to 11. well, coming up tonight in the buick sports zone we have eagles beat writer jeffrey mosher. mike concern from the dale news also will join us getting ready for the college football season including next week's season opener for temple and
