"eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson joins us live from the accident investigation division in brewery town with the very latest on this. steve? >> reporter: show two things die a and in a. first of all philadelphia police identified the officer killed in

this hit and run as 42-year-old lamar pool, 18 year veteran on the force and neighbors we spoke to today say a husband and a father. secondly, philadelphia police are crediting a good share tan tow truck driver for the capture of the suspect. the writ hit-and-run driver in this case. at that press conference, they broke down how it happened. >> hit-and-run. >> it was awful. it was devastating. >> reporter: eyewitnesses seeing the worse. the victim a police officer. 42-year-old lamar pool 18-year-old veteran on the force dies in an off duty crash. second driver at the scene. pool the second philadelphia police officer to die on the road in one week. >> this is two in one week we lost of our own. of course is heart broken about it. >> reporter: investigators say about 4:00 sunday afternoon, pool was traveling west on devereaux avenue on this honda motorcycle. a second driver in this corolla traveling east at the intersection on the boulevard

the driver makes a left turn in front of pool causing the bike to strike the car sending pool into the road. he was rush to the hospital, an hour later pronounced dead. >> right aft the crash he gets out for one minute, looks at -- scene what happens and then gets back in his car and nose goes north on the boulevard. >> reporter: police then say a good samaritan tow truck driver sees what happens and tails the suspect. police credit him for capture. >> really helped out big time. followed the car, pinned the car in. call the police. police got there and may made the arrest for leaving the scene of an accident. >> reporter: police now questioning the 5884 old driver of that corolla. now in custody and they say alcohol may have played roll. >> he did exhibit signs of dui. one thing for sure he did leave the scene of the accident. >> he did try to run. hit-and-run and the man unfortunately didn't make it much he died. >> reporter: and that 5884 old driver has yet to be identified. and yet to be charged in this case but police i spoke to say

you can bet charges are coming. reporting from the accident investigation division i'm steve patterson cbs3 "eyewitness new news". >> all right, our thoughts are certainly with that officer's family tonight. thank you, steve. >> this is the second straight weekend that an accident has claimed the life of an off duty philadelphia police officer. last saturday, 32-year-old sergeant raphael ali was killed in roxborough when his suv hit a tree on the sick thousand block of henre avenue. a police officer is shot point blank during a standoff in delaware county this morning and thanks to his bullet proof vest he's expected to make full recovery it happened early this morning on the 600 block of mohawk avenue in norwood. "eyewitness news" reporter alex huff has more. >> reporter:. >> with his face in his hands, 36-year-old darrell burt was arraigned before district judge just 12 hour after police say he took two shots at someone who was trying to help him. around 1am crews arrived to the

600 block of mohawk avenue in norwood to find a suicidal man barricaded inside his apartment. >> at one point the door opened up then tried to deploy a taser to get the subject at which time the subject shut the door and fired two rounds through the door. >> reporter: on the other side of that door was a assisting ridley police officer mark hanley. he was hit in the leg and chest. and likely would have been killed if not for his bullet proof vest. officers fired back hitting the suspect in the elbow. >> i heard a gunshot and i jumped out of the bed. julia and her fiance' were won't up by police and told to evacuate. for an hour negotiate thed worked with burt who agreed to come out. that same man helped her move in and she saw him just hours before the shooting. >> yesterday, um, i was going to the beach so i saw him out here. really really nice guy. i really don't know what happened. >> reporter: both officer and suspect were treated at separate hospitals and released.

for hanley, he was ushered home by a fleet of squad cars and collingdale fire truck. for he doubles as chief. >> he's a good leader. he's a community man. he's out there on fire truck or police car he's always there helping people. >> i felt just sadness and felt the worst. all happened so fast that you don't think about it. >> reporter: preliminary hearing has been scheduled for darryl burt for september 9th. reporting from darby township, alexandria huff, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> turning now to weather, summer may be drawing to close but the hot weather seems to be sticking a round. meteorologist justin drabick is on the cbs3 sky deck tonight enjoying a nice evening out there. justin. >> diane narcotic it's not that bad right now. we have a nice little breeze. you can still feel that mugg mugginess starting to return to the region after a nice couple of days we had across the delaware valley but it got hot today. we made it to 91 degrees officially at the philadelphia international airport. that is above the average. we shall be in the low 80s this

time of year. and the record high for this date is 100 degrees. set back in 1953. so we're not talking about temperatures around 100 but certainly some low and mid 90s possible later on this week. here we are right now still 81 in philadelphia. surrounding areas are cooling down in the low and mid 70s. 73 degrees in allentown. 74 in wildwood, new jersey right now. there is a nice whipped off the atlantic ocean down towards the shore points that wind is out of the southwest that's keeping temperatures down in south jersey and the delaware beaches cooler. we're in the 73-degree range in cape may. 76 in ocean city, new jersey. that dew point temperature on the rise. tells us how much humidity in the air. up to 65 degrees right now pretty high and typical for some are the feels steamy and it's realing going to stay like that dew points ranging in the mid 60 toss about 70 through the up coming week. get ready for humid conditions returning to the region of the if you don't like the humidity you're not going like this forecast. but it does stay warm through the overnight hours tonight.

we're talking about 60s and 70s for the low temperatures with no threat of rain just few clouds around we'll talk about that hot seven day forecast coming up in a few more minutes. back over to you, diana. >> thanks justin. philadelphia police investigating the cause of a two car accident that end width one driver smash nothing a west kensington storefront. this was the scene at north ninth and lehigh avenue. fire crews used the jaws of life to get a victim out of one of the vehicles. no word tonight on the ex at the present time of that person's injuries or what may have caused the crash. a firefighter and a sketch-year-old man were taken to the hospital after an apartment fire in northeast philadelphia today. fire crews responded just after 11:00 a.m. to the academy apartments complex on 9100 -- 91 head dread block of academy road. the fire was contained to one apartment there. the sketch-year-old man was wheelchair bound when rescue crews pulled him out of the building. he's now being treated for smoke inhalation. the firefighter is being treated

for chest pains. no word tonight on what may have caused that fire. new at 11:00, west craven one of modern horrors most celebrated film makers passed away. craven died dated reported battle with brain caps ser. he was the mind behind a nightmare on elm street and scream. craven helped revolutionize the horror genre. wes craven was 76 years old. multi faith memorial service those gathered vowed to honor the lives of a virginia news crew by making a positive impact on the world. religious leaders, co-workers and family members all gathered to remember allison parker and adam ward at an inter faith ceremony. parker and ward were killed during a live broadcast by a disgruntled co-worker who then shot himself. during today's service, the general manager of the station where the pair worked spoke about improving mental health treatment. >> i'd like to advise my colleagues, my employees, my

so we'll really stack these 90-degrees up. so far this year we've had 29 of them and we had a lot of them for the first half of august, caught a break fort second half but here we go again as we head into september. likely possibly into the mid 30s potentially as we feel the extended heat wave. fifth the of the season. nothing close to 2010. we had 55-degree days or higher. 81 right now still at the airport. it is warm outside mid 70s millville and atlantic city. everybody pretty much uniform. clouds around and southwest wind that holds the temperatures steady. we'll drop a few more degrees and tip into the upper 60s. another humid day on monday increased it for tuesday and wednesday and thursday. every day this week pretty much on the steamy side. get used to it. here's what's happening on storm scan3. maybe a sprinkle chance up across the northern poconos elsewhere just partly cloudy skies. two disturbances going on way up in the atmosphere not a big organized storm. one over the ohio valley a couple of showers maybe few thunderstorms a larger storm

system to the south. bringing some of those clouds and showers into north carolina most of that moisture does stay to the south though but it's been awhile since we had rain. good 10 days since we had measurable rainfall here across the delaware valley. a lot of heat over the central us moves eastward all because the jet stream as it moves farther north and this weather pattern holds in place this we week. so hot, humid conditions out in the tropics starting to heat things up a little bit here's our sickth named storm of the season. this is tropical storm fred. getting close to hurricane status. winds at 70 miles per hour. this is way out in the far eastern atlantic. coast of africa. here's the verde islands. it will track to the northwest over the islands bring hurricane conditions probably over the next 12 to 24 hours. and then possibly weaken back into a tropical storm and then eventually just a tropical depression as it moves into some older ocean water then unfavorable environment. that's good news. this storm is out over the central atlantic waters again really no threat of any mainland.

except for the cape verde islands back home clouds in the morning hours but it's okay commute. we'll keep things dry into the afternoon. little bit more sunshine. then we'll go mostly sunny for tuesday. that's really going to help heat up the temperatures. on the muggy side, partly cloudy, 73 for center too. 60s in some of the suburbs. a hot and humid monday, partial sunshine, 90 degrees once again. day number two. one more will give us heat wave fifth of the season. monday forecast at the shore on the breezy side, 84 degrees. sunshine and clouds. ocean water temperature in the mid 70s. peak sure you wear the sunblock. watch out for rip currents southwest wind kicks up around 10 to 20 miles per hour. so chops up the water. make sure the lifeguards are on doubt if you plan on swimming in the owing. a lot of sunshine this week after tomorrow. low and mid 90s for high temperatures. hottest day will be on wednesday. friday there's a slight chance for a shower or thunderstorm. as we head into labor day weekend stays on the warm side. things are looking dry. that's good news for labor day
