philadelphia police are mourning one of their own. this time, an off-duty officer is killed in a hit-and-run. hear how police caught up to the driver, to make an arrest. >> also, a security scare, at newark liberty international airport, forces pass inning tears evacuate one of the terminals. and, the last day of august, but oh, it feels more like the dog days of summer, another scorcher on tap for today. and we could be at the beginning after heatwave. kyla has the latest for you. good morning, it is monday, august 31, i'm erika von tiehl. also, some student heading back to school today, we have mower on that coming up in just a few minutes. first though, we want to check in with kyla and meisha, the latest on your forecast, and the roads, and already feeling warm out there. good morning, ladies? oh, warm, warm outside, and heating up on the roadways, most definitely good morning. >> good morning, everybody, it is a keep your air conditioners on kind of morning. i step out on this pad -- patio. i walk out of the air-conditioning, oh, okay, it is really, really moist air out here, this morning, you can feel it the moment you get outside. the humidity levels are going

up. we are going to feel lot of humidity and heat today. yes, we are in what i think will be heatwave, three days of 90's, that's what we usually call heatwave. >> this will be day two, if we make it to the 09 degrees mark, yes, i think we'll be there. let's talk about where we've been for the month every august. eleven days, of 90 degrees plus heat, 28 out of 30 days have been sunny. can't say we haven't had a loft sunshine it, has been nice. highest hi, 94, lowest temp, six of 3 degrees. so, we are going to wind it up toasty again. you can tell when you look at the map right now, look at the temperatures, you can see, 76 degrees already in philadelphia. seventy-four down in atlantic city, those 60s just lurking to the north there in mount pocono. you got to head up there if you want cooler air today, everybody. do have cloud cover, see few sprinkles, i don't expect a lot out of. that will the rain is to the south of us. we will keep our eyes out for a few sprinkles, possible, we could use some rain by the way, rain deficit for this month, as well. not expecting much of anything today though. the most you will feel,

moisture the humidity. high of 09 degrees today, what we are expecting in philadelphia at the shore, about 84, and in the poconos about 83, so, it is going to be warm one. and we will talk seven day forecast, back in a few moments, meisha, a because it is not just yesterday, today, or tomorrow, with the 90's, they'll keep on keeping on. how is the traffic looking? hot and bothered? >> yes, right. you saw the words out of my mouth with that one, kai l things looking real good out on the roadways, it will be real warm for those kiddos out at recess. a look at malvern, route 252, looking real nice in this area. and anywhere around the king of prussia area, as women, looking real nice. fifty-nine southbound at the betsy ross bridge, an area where we are starting to slowly see volume levels bill up. pretty typical for monday, specially now justin? to the 6:00 hour. but his is what you are seeing, plenty of headlights, taillights, seeing the same thing, 59 southbound at cottman. this is one of the areas that really heats up probably one of the quickest areas that we see, and certainly is. good news, everyone still

traveling at posted speeds. now, this is where we have our first accident of the morning. the northeast extension southbound, near lansdale. the right lane is blocked, in that area, erika, over to you. >> thank you, 6:03. and another off duty philadelphia police officer, is killed in a crash. this time at the hand of a hit-and-run driver. "eyewitness news" reporter just ten finch joins us turks 12th police district in southwest philadelphia where the officer was assigned. justin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, police identify the deceased officer as lamar pool, age 42, serving his 19th year, with the force. he was based here, at the 12th district, and police say, it was witnesses who helped him find the driver who struck pool. let's take you now to video, from yesterday, alert bystanders, tracking down a silver toyota corolla, they say, was going east, on roosevelt boulevard, pool, they say, was on his hand did a motorcycle going west. now, it is believed, that corolla made left turn, and struck pool, at about

4:00 p.m. yesterday. and then spread away from the crash scene. but, there was alert tow truck driver on the heals of that corolla, which was later found near devereaux and bustleton avenue. meantime, the crash impact had ejected pool from his bike, pool was not wearing a helmet, and he was taken to aria-torresdale with head injuries where he was pronounced dead a short time later. over at the crash site, bystanders told police that the driver new he hit pool but still chose to leave the scene. take a listen. >> according to witnesses right after the crash, gets out for one minute, looks and sees what happens, then get back in his toyota corolla, north on the boulevard. stayed briefly and then took off. >> now, charges have not yet been announced for the driver involved in this hit-and-run crash. we do know that he's 58 years old, and police are also saying he was showing signs of dui at the time, his name, at this point, though, has in the yet been released. and we are live this morning,

in southwest philadelphia, i'm justin finch, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". justin, thank you for that. >> now, this is the second straight weekends an accident claimed the life after off duty philadelphia police officer. last saturday, 32 year old sergeant raphael ali was killed in roxborough, when his suv hit a tree on the 6,000 block of henry avenue. >> delaware county police officer recovering at home this morning, after being shot during a stand-off. police are responding to calls that an armed soup sidal man was barricaded inside a home yesterday morning, on the 600 block of mohawk avenue, in norwood. officer mark hanley was shot twice, trying to apprehend that suspect. we're told his bulletproof vest saved his life. the door opened up. they tried to deploy taze tear get the subject, at which time the subject fired two round through the door. >> thirty-six year old darryl burt surrendered to police, was treated at the hospital for gunshot wound to the em bo.

he was then charged with attempted murder. burt schedule for preliminary hearing on september 9th. >> new this morning, investigators are looking for the cause of this house fire, in kensington. the fire broke out overnight on the 3,000 block of ash or street. we're told that building was vacant. eyewitnesses, though, tell us that they saw several people, believed to be squatters, leaving that building overnight. >> a security breach shuts down busy terminal at newark liberty international airport. authorities say man enters the secure area at the airport last night setting off alarm inside terminal c. customs agents responded quickly, arrest that intruder. >> as he was being marched out of the terminal, he had a bick silly grin. he was kind of laughing to himself as the officers walk him out. >> we didn't really know where we were supposed to be headed, what gates were open, what terminals were open. a lot of people flustered and irritated obviously, but it has been exhausting.

>> remnants of tropical storm erika moving through florida could bring several inches of rain and prompting flashflood warnings. rip current are also possible, all the way up to the carolina's, cbs news correspondent don champion with the latest for from miami. report report even though erika has dissipated part of the southeast, are not out of the woods yet. remnants of the tropical storm are producing heavy rain, high winds, in florida, conditions that could last for several days. >> with that, a threat for some flashflooding, pretty widespread two, 4 inches, but locally, few spots see over 5 inches, that's where we would see the flashflooding concerns. >> over the weekend, erika's crashing waves beat away at the coast in palm beach leaving a three to 5-foot cliff. >> the errosion, i mean, unbelievable. i've never seen anything like it. >> erika's rains turned yards into lakes, and covered roads, in part of the state. the situation made it tricky for both drivers and bikers. >> i could barely pedal. it come up above my pedals.

that's how deep it gets. >> last week, tropical storm erika dumped more than 15 inches of rain in part of the caribbean, killing at least 20 people on the island of dominica. for now, emergency operations centers florida, are staying open around the clock, ready if the waters rise. don champion, cbs news, miami. of course we're also keeping an eye on erika, but also, hurricane fred, tropical storm fred, how strong is he? >> hurricane already. so, i want to show everybody a little bit about what's happening in florida, why they are there is still concern for flooding. future rain amounts, what they are expecting as we head over the next few days, see spots here, particularly in central florida, could see four even 5 inches like three, 5 inches every rain. obviously you get that much rain quickly it, becomes a problem. now we head over to the coast of after k cape verdict he is, hurricane fred kick up. where these things develop. they don't turn into hurricane that quackly. >> this one has, 08-mile per hour sustained winds. now the good news, it is expected to weaken, and it is

very far away from land. as you can see, head in the our direct, but, chances are, you know, anything could happen between now and then. so we head back home, where we are just keeping an eye on some clouds, few sprinkles, there, you can see, as we take a look at the radar. there is some rain to the south. not expecting a lot out of this. but again, we keep eye out for sprinkle or two. hey, we could use some rain. i don't see us getting much out of this today. we get heat everybody. already, in the mid 70s, in philadelphia, 76 degrees, 75, down at the shore. and if you are headed to the shore today, see high of about 84, casino every nice, when little warm at the shore, right? watch out, because the rip current are moderate risk today. uv index; about seven, we've got heat everybody. the jet stream heading to the north, that means, all of those warm temperatures are going to continue not just today, but, also, as we get into -- get into tomorrow, even as we head into thursday. today high of 09 degrees. sunny skies, relatively sunny. few clouds out there. as we get into tonight, over night low is in the 70s. that says something to you, when your overnight low is in the 70s.

know what's going on early monday morning, pushing toward the rush hour. here is reports every disable vehicle, you can see it pulled all the way out, blogging right lane. the boulevard southbound, before broad street. certainly, as you drive past this, some are, you know, tapping on their brakes. which, what casino of happenings with all of the flashing lights when you get there is you get the gaper delays, as well. so we have the volume, gaper delays, brake light going on there is will cause some slow downs for some of you on the boulevard. now, 422 eastbound before trooper road, one of the areas as you head toward king of prussia. looking pretty good. but just take a look at that string of vehicles, that starts to happen. that's just what happens, we push toward the 7:00. and the schuylkill, westbound, city avenue. after you get off the roosevelt boulevard, this is what you will be looking at, definitely brake lights starting to pop on your traveling less than posted speeds on the schuylkill in and around the area. so just give yourself couple of extra minute as we push toward the 7:00. erika, over to you. >> thank you, happening today, president obama secretary of

welcome back, more on the off duty philadelphia police officer killed in a hit-and-run crash. "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch joins us now at the 12th police di district in southwest philly, justin, good morning. >> erika, good morning, charges are now pending against that hit-and-run driver. don't know much about him yet. we do know, that police officer lamar pool, age 42, and serving his 19th year with the force, before he died. we also know, he was most recently assign here to the 12th district on sunday, at about 4:00 p.m., police say, pool was struck on roosevelt boulevard near devereaux avenue. investigators say, pool was going west, on roosevelt, on his motorcycle, when a toyota corolla struck him, going east witness say the driver was making left turn when he struck pool. we do know the driver stopped, got out of the car, look at the crash, before speeding a which from that scene. driver has not yet been named at this time or identified, we do know, he is a 58 year old
