certainly not cool start to the month of september. good afternoon everyone, i'm pat ciarrocchi. >> i'm erika von tiehl. we head outside to kyla out on the skydeck, 1 degrees away from the heatwave, right, cellula. >> 1 degrees, that's right. so the on official heatwave criteria that we use in the northeast is three days in a row of 09 degrees, and we had it sunday, we had it monday, today we are one agree shy of it, so i think we'll get there too. current temperatures, 89 degrees here in philadelphia, check out atlantic city, already at 88 degrees, and as you can see, allentown, 85. the poconos, the only ones in the 70s right now, coming in at about 77 degrees. dew points holding steady, in the mid 60s. so, the humidity is out there, it could be worse. but, you know, definitely could be worse, i'm glad to see those numbers kind of held up little bit there holding in the 60s, about 47% humidity. this is why we have been able to heat up so quickly, take a look at storm scan3, this live look here, just shows you, absolutely clear skies. no clouds, keeping any sun from getting in, absolutely

heating up quickly. so that's a big factor today. remember yesterday, we had the clouds, it casino every put lid on it for little while. today expecting 93 in the city that sunshine will stick with us as we head to the shore, 86 degrees, again, you can see some spots exceeded 86 degrees at the 88 down in atlantic city. the poconos about 84 degrees. so, even the poconos, are going to get warm. it is going to remain toasty, not just today, but also getting into wednesday and thursday. so, we've got real shot at september starting off very, very steamy, everybody. see the break coming as we head toward the weekends. i'll talk more about that, want to come back in just little bit with your seven day forecast, labor day weekend, looking pretty good. i'll give you details, pat, erika, back to you. >> kyla, thank you. with less than month to go before pope francis arrives in philadelphia, the pope says that he will now allow priests to on solve people from the sin of abortion. vatican officials are saying that pope francis is not changing church doctrine, but rather, extending mercy to those who seek god's

forgiveness. pope francis said the solution will be part of the upcoming year of mercy, local catholics reacted to that news. >> against the catholic religion, you know, beliefs and all, but it is also the catholic way, christian way, to forgive. >> kept saying thank god bringing everybody together. lord willing. >> for now vatican spokesperson saying the change will only apply during the holy year which begins in december. the pope's letter did not mention people who perform abortions, more reaction on this story coming up today on "eyewitness news" at 5:00. >> developing right now, a kentucky county clerk who refuses to issue same sex marriage licenses despite a ruling from the u.s. supreme court, he's now being called to federal hearing this thursday. the defiant clerk is caught on camera refuse to go budget.

licenses. >> it is still an emotional issue, but there is no legal issue involved, once the supreme court has spoken? kim davis could face jail time for refuse to go comply with the law. davis says she is aware of the consequences. craig boswell, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". police say two children are in surgery, and their mother's condition is improving after they were struck by a car last night in lakewood. chopper three over route nine right here. eyewitness tells the asbury park press, the mother was pushing the two small children in a stroller, when a car hit them. we have close look at that scene, from the lakewood scoop. you can see the stroller there on the road in the middle. the driver stayed on the scene, police towed his car. so far, no charges have been filed. >> police have released mugshot of 22 year old mikhail cologne. cologne surrendered yesterday in connection with deadly kensington hit-and-run. two year old david was killed, his 19 year old mother, josephine riviera, was

injured. cologne is facing several charges, including homicide by vehicle. >> well, new child passenger safety law in new jersey is now in effect, the new rules are some of the most restrictive in the country, when it comes to how children should be buckled up. governor chris christie signed that legislation in may, but what does it mean for you? so let's break it down. from birth to age two, a child under 30 pounds must be in a rear facing carseat, with a five-point harness. from four to eight years of age, children must stay in a carseat or booster seat in the back seat, until they are at least eight years of age, or 57 inches tall. >> fines are also going up, ranking from 50 to $75. a funeral will be held today for the virginia tv news cameraman, who along with a reporter was shot to death on live television. wdbj cameraman adam ward, and reporter alison parker, were in the middle of a live interview last wednesday, when a former co-worker walked up,

and began shooting. wards will be laid to rest in hometown of roanoke, virginia. being interviewed, also, shot, she though is recovering in the hospital. >> and services for late sixers star darryl dawkins, church in lehigh county, a public viewing begins at 4:00 after a private family viewing, a private funeral is slated for tomorrow, and nicknamed the chocolate thunder. dawkins was fan favorite for seven seasons with the 76ers. he died last week, of a heart attack at the age of 58. >> coming up on "eyewitness news" at noon, more emails released. the state department reveals nearly 7,000 pages of emails from hillary clinton from that private server. but it is the ones that we can't see that have people talking today. >> also, walking with a purpose. three veterans begin a special walk to new york city. why they are tracking 100 miles when "eyewitness news" at noon returns.

when we heat up quickly like this the air can have effect on it, and certainly it can be a problem for those of you who might have few health issues. so look at this. air quality alert today, if you have asthma, respiratory problems, be careful. pollen level very high today. uv index you bet with all of the sunshine, that's hi, extreme caution also today, for the heat index, so right now at 89 degrees in philadelphia. you can see, 88 in atlantic city, check it out. eighty-four in reading. about 85 in lancaster. everybody heating up. if we look at the region, check out washington dc already in the 90s, see pit burying, cleveland, not just us, everybody heating up, clear skies, storm scan3, that means, the sunshine just comes right on in. so that's why we're going see such hot day. yesterday high was 90 degrees, average this time of year about 83 we beat that today. if we make it to 990, only 1

degree away, that's a heatwave. three days of 90's, potentially wednesday and thursday, that we could also see some 90's. so that could be a run about five days. if you want to cool down, normally i would say go to the beach. live look at the neighborhood network of margate. where you can see people out there. i have to tell you they are in the upper 80s, too. even the ocean little warm. look at this, just hit 08 degrees here, so ocean little bit toasty, too, although i'm sure it will feel pretty nice if it is 88 at the beach. poconos also warming up, little cooler than everywhere else, expecting 484 degrees today. look what happens on wednesday. already up to 87. so it is pretty much hot no matter where go. ninety-three for the city today, mostly sunny hot and humid. winds, not much of it out of the north there, about 5 miles per hour, bit clear tonight, muggy overnight low, 7 degrees. seven day forecast, talk about the break that's coming in this heat. that would be friday. so we get through those 90's, and friday you can see, high of 86. we head toward your labor day

couple of glasses and hurting your liver and your waistline. you have to be careful. >> all right, well, something that's at least non-alcoholic, more caffeine focused, coffee, starting our day with a cup of coffee. but then that can turn into cup of coffee with your snack, and with lunch in the afternoon. where should you try to keep your coffee portion? >> i recommend sticking to just standard cup. >> okay. >> when you start to get into multiple cups, and particularly throughout the day, into the afternoon, the evening, it can really affect your sleep patterns. and that can make you more caffeine dependent, just creates this ever lasting cycle of coffee, coffee, coffee. >> catch 22. >> yes. >> always hearing nut are so good for your health. who, who is really counting out how many nuts you should eat? >> that's the tricky part. because we can -- it is casino of like this mindless eat that happens when it comes with nuts. specially if they're in a package of trail mix, with other items in there, then it is just like oh, my goodness,
