this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> a man is rescued after a crash pinned him inside his car for almost nine hours. a police officer spotted that vehicle, in a creek far below a montgomery county highway. good afternoon, i'm erika von tiehl. pat ciarrocchi on special assignment. now, it was just a frightening night for that man pinned inside the wreckage. "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson joins us now,'s in the lower merion, where the rescue happened earlier today. just incredible story, steve. >> reporter: erika, harrowing

stretch of time, featuring a dramatic rescue, with life or death consequences, and it all started with passing observation, as you mention, on duty police officer, where i'm standing right now, this is trout run creek. we can't exactly show you the scene from here, the vantage point about 50 yards to the south, and so much vegetation, what i can do, is show you some incredibly video from this morning. take a look, now, what first responders i spoke to told me, about 7:00 last night, the corner of mills creek road, you see and grains lane, car goes into the ravine, down crashing into this creek. now, those responders say about nine hours later, a passing lower merion police officer just on duty, sees the vehicles, calls for help. so the video you're watching, nine hours later, is this morning. what i'm told multiple crews, and fire department, raised to extract the single male driver from that vehicle, because of so much vegetation, they have

to ladder down into the ravine, they have to cut the doors off, cut the dashboard, off of the driver, and then make the rescue. finally an hour after they started the rescue, he is finally extracted and taken to the hospital. now, police have not released the name of that driver or the officer. so we're not sure what his condition is yet. but everybody i spoke to first responders, and firefighters, say, this morning, a life was saved. what i'm doing this afternoon, speaking to those first responders so you want to stick with "eyewitness news" for later additions and that harrowing tail and five who hands cut. steve patterson, lower merion, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> incredible he was spotted, steve, thank you. it is also back to school today in philadelphia. and plenty of other places, as well. reporter justin finch shows us dozens of clergy, community members came together outside martin martin luther king high school this morning for back to school tradition of public tear. -- prayer.

around 10:30. according to police, a white male, wearing red shorts, and red shirt, walked into the bank and handed the tell area note demanding money. he took off on foot, south on 16th street, where police say he changed his clothes. officers found the shorts i was wearing with the demand note inside the pocket. >> once again, the bank robbery took place, meanwhile charges pending against suspect wanted in a bar shooting in philadelphia's olney neighborhood overnight. >> gunfire errupted around 10:30, after fight inside the baron 5500 block of north fifth street, that spilled outside on to the street. twenty-three year old man was shot in the chest. the bullet piercing him lung. a 27 year old woman, who was shot in her leg and abdomen was treated and released from the hospital. >> rainy relief in site. we want to check in with justin drabick out on the cbs-3 skydeck, sigh unlike yesterday you took off your jacket to go stands in these

89 agree temperatures, justin? >> i learned my lesson yesterday, yes. pretty nasty out there. and we got some pretty good september heat going on right now we're in full sunshine, can't find cloud in the sky, not much after breeze to help things out. >> current temperatures around the region 90 up in allentown, atlantic city airport hitting 90 degrees, 88 at the airport, 89 in wilmington, delaware. >> even the suburbs, cranking up the heat right now, upper 80s, pottstown, duels town, willow grove upper 80s, hitting 90 degrees in mt. holly, new jersey, comfort index, not looking good. dew point temperature hi, 68 greets, what we look at to gauge the humidity and these are pretty high numbers, once up around 70, tropical air mass, have the oppressive feel, it will be the trends through the rest of today, tonight, and once again, during the day on wednesday. so, there is a bit of heat index to deal with this afternoon. so that's what it feels like when you factor in the humidity.

most places already feeling like the lower 90s, and in a lot of locations across the delaware valley when you add in the humidity, and that's not really going to go down any time soon. once again, tomorrow, still those heat indexes are going to be running pretty high. storm scan3, also, nice and quiet. across the delaware valley right now, just like i said, mostly sunny skies, maybe few clouds around from time to time. looks like my clicker just does not want to advance, but nothing to show you on the radar. there you go, there is the heat index, lower 90s in many spots, and again storm scan3 quiet. afternoon highs reach the low 90s for philadelphia and mid 80s at the shore and poconos. talk about that rain and cooler temperatures in the seven day coming up in a few minute, erika. >> justin, thank you. it is just 18 days until pope francis arrives in philadelphia for the world meeting of families. and, we will tell but there is after getting some philadelphia international airport back from the public, septa announced revisions to their plans during the papal visit. double the number of station that is will be available on september 26th and 27th. along the market frankford line and the broad street

outside, some looking for some shade. it is out hot out there. >> i'm sure a lot are look to go get out, maybe have plans after school, because we are talking about sunshine continuing this forecast, it is getting hot out there. i was just out there on the skydeck, went out there without the jacket. but i'm still sweat being out there. temperatures up around 09 degrees. a lot of sunshine going on, maybe still lucky hanging out at the shore, have the day off, extending the labor day weekends one more day. look at the live look, at the ocean city boardwalk, not too crowded. few people out there enjoying the nice afternoon. even along the coast, not much after breeze to deal with. so, temperatures are hot, right along the beach, getting well into the 80s, this afternoon. so, potentially looking at our sixth heatwave of this season, yesterday we did hit 90 degrees, at philadelphia, today, already at 88, you might as well put the clerk mark here. we will hit the 90s, certainly tomorrow we have shot at 90 degrees, once again, it will be three in a row. average high 81 degrees, so way above that, but, finally, seven day forecast, talk about bit of cool down coming up. if you're tired of me talking

about the heat, here is a little fall countdown for you. seventeen days until fall officially does arrive. twenty-seven days until we average 70 degrees for the high temperature. fifty-three until halloween, look at that, around the corner, daylight saving time, will come to ends, 54 days from now, turn the clocks back one hour. look at the temperatures, upper 80s to around 90 degrees, for most spots across the delaware valley afternoon, little breeze coming in out of the southwest, look at the coastal temperatures, stone harbor, surging 88 degrees, rehoboth beach delaware coming in at 83, all because high pressure right on top of us, right now, keeping our skies mostly sunny, it is keeping all of these showers and storms well to our north and west. eventually, a cool front will move eastward bringing needed rain to our forecast later this week. but we continue to sit in the hot humid air mass today once again tomorrow, should make it our sixth heatwave of the season, thursday, change things up, front comes in off and on showers through the day, maybe few thunderstorms knocks the temperatures back down to the 80s, back front

clears the region friday into the weekends, cools us down, lower humidity. talk about the rain chances today, not happening at all. tomorrow, throw 20% chance, mainly late during the day, and at night, isolated stuff. it is thursday we'll see widespread showers, bumming it up to 70% chance for some rain. but thursday will be the wettest day of the week. nothing happening this afternoon, notice few fair weather clouds trying to develop, things quiet down, through the nighttime hours going mostly clear. here's tomorrow afternoon. notice few spotty showers, trying to break out, really depend where you are. not everybody sees it. and then more of widespread shower chance, coming during the day thursday. pretty much throughout the entire day. we have shot for wet weather. it is hot. jet stream well to the north, allowing heat to expand, but late in the week, little dip in the jet stream trying to bring cooler air in if the from the, knocks temperatures back down to the average. hot, humid, lot of sun, tonight mostly clear, warm, muggy, dropping to 74. maybe headed to the ballpark, phillies-braves. 87 degrees at first pitch. good night for the hitters,

could be seeing a lot of long balls tonight with the humidity around. here is the extended forecast, wrapping up the 90s on wednesday, back to the 80s thursday, with showers, and look at the weaken, dry, sun, clouds, lower 80s, maybe even some upper 70s in the forecast, so there is some hints of fall coming, but nothing sustained. >> i love the hint of fall. >> yes. >> the 70s, sound pretty good, pumpkin spiced latte. thank, so much. we'll be right back.
