broken record for those of you who remember what a record is. we're sweating out another sizzling september day. >> there are some storms on the horizon, though, meteorologist kate bilo is live outside on the sky deck with more on that kate. >> reporter: speaking of broken record we have a couple of tied or broken record to tell but today heat wave. temperatures rose to the mid 90's in a lot of location is today, more sun you got, hotter it has been. it is a steam bath out here on the sky deck. very, very hot right now. you can feel moisture in the atmosphere this will contribute to potentially heavy rain with any shower or thunderstorm that pops up in the next 24 hours or so. let go out to storm scan three and show you these showers and thunderstorms firing autopsy cross the northeast. actual front is still well back to the west in the great lakes. see a line of showers and storms in northwestern pennsylvania pennsylvania. for our area activity is sparse this evening, and it will continue to be so overnight. we can see storms fired up over portions of ocean and burlington counties and right over new york city as well, look at that rain and frequent lightening there over portions of ocean county at the moment

and rain and thunder, delayed portions of the u.s. open up there in queens. our heat wave is official, three days in the 90's. we got to 93 in philadelphia that makes it the sixth heat wave of the season. we are back to the 80's tomorrow but highs so far today, take a look at those new record, allentown, reading, trenton, fill got to 93. once we get through these showers and storms though big changes on the way, cooler weather for weekend i'll have more when i join you inside in a few minutes, back over to you. four workers are injured when a hanger collapsed at newark liberty international airport. united airlines hanger, was the in the process of being demolished when it the collapsed. all of the injuries are said to be non-life threatening. the that is under investigation. the results are in on the investigation in the plane crash that killed philadelphia newspaper a co-owner lewis katz. "eyewitness news" reporter todd quinones explains how federal authorities say a preflight check could have prevented the tragedy. >> reporter: pilot error, national transportation safety board concluded today, the

crew aboard the jet that crashed killing philadelphia inquirer co-owner lewis katz and six others failed to perform a routine preflight check, and failed to disengage in the safety mechanism before take off. gulf stream jet over ran a massachusetts runway in may 2014, crashed and caught fire. ntsb says safety mechanism known as a gust lock prevented the plane from being able to take off. >> these checks would have identified that the gust lock was still engaged before taxiing the aircraft for take off. >> reporter: forget to go disengage the gust locks before take off would be a monumental oversight especially for two experienced pilots. >> there is no question of mechanical failure. >> reporter: we spoke via face time with aviation attorney and pilot arthur wolk who represent the families of, two of the passengers kill in the crash, and even if the pilots forgot to disengage the gust locks, a point blocked out, safety mechanisms in the jet

should have prevented the plane from being able to throttle up. >> is there so many other issues here which are trouble, just to blame the flight crew is easy waste out because they are dead, they cannot defend themselves. >> reporter: ntsb placed blame on the design of the gulf stream jet saying it did in the provide an unmistakable warning that the plane could not take off safely. spokesperson for gulf stream extended condolences and in a statement said safety is gulf stream's top priority. we have notified our operators about the importance of following proper preflight ape take off procedures, and we are actively working with the f a aa to modify, the gust lock interlock. wolk is representing two victims in the lawsuit begins gulf stream and others and he is waiting to get his first look at wreckage which the the ntsb is expected to release shortly. the reporting live from the sat center, todd quinones, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". we're still working to find out if the taxi driver

who killed two pedestrians in center city this week will face charges. police say 25 year-old amanda degrilamo of phoenixville and brian boti of baltimore were crossing broad street near arch early monday morning when the cab hit them. "eyewitness news" has learned that the cab company, rosemont taxi cab, has been investigated by the state two dozen times since 2010 and they have been cited several times for safety violations. witnesses say the driver in this case was speeding. the woman labeled the ring leader of the so-called tacony basement of horrors has pleaded guilty to her crime. linda ann westin appeared in federal court this morning. she faces life in prison, plus 80 years. westin was indicted last year on charges that she and her co-defendant, kidnaped, mentally disable adult for over a decade and enslaved them to steel government benefit checks. >> a guilty plea to 196 counts today, and many of them are very serious carrying

mandatory life in prison. that is really much closer to closure. >> her decision was motivated largely out of concern for her children that there will be some closure to the case. >> a formal sentencing hearing is scheduled for westin on november 5th, 2 co-defendants await trial, two others have already pleaded guilty. today city of baltimore formally approved a 6.4 million-dollar wrongful death settlement with the family of freddie gray. the board of estimates was unanimous. gray died after he was critically injured in police custody in april. six officers are facing criminal charges. the 25 year-old's death set off rioting in the city. baltimore's mayor defended the settlement. >> the purpose of the civil settlement to bring an important measure of closure to the gray family, to the community, and to the city, and to avoid years and years of protracted civil litigation and potential arm to the

problems. he a says 22 minutes a day could change your life. >> the science tell thaws 22 minutes of brisk walking or moderate physical activity can get you these health benefits of reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes. >> reporter: surgeon general wants it easier to walk around their communities but 30 percent have of u.s. neighborhood don't have sidewalks especially in low income neighborhood in large part because they have less streetlighting, fewer crosswalks, fewer traffic calming measures. the department of transportation and safety is our number one priority. we are taking a number of steps. >> reporter: it is walking outside that doesn't work treadmill or other inside locations can work just as well. and, in addition to the physical benefits, 22 minutes of walking a day or other moderate exercise has also been shown to improve mental and emotional health, but, only half of u.s. a adults get that much exercise. so as the surgeon general says, time to step it up, our own, ukee washington, 10,000

margate this evening as well on the live neighborhood network. you can see beach is still crowded at this hour. not too bad outside, been nice and warm but certainly a place to beat the heat down the the shore and that has been the case all this week and all last week as we have been sweltering here in the city of philadelphia a lets look at storm scan three you can see showers and storms popped up, i want to show you burlington and ocean counties that i was talking about. mainly over ocean county at the moment. we have one shower near cape may county as well but here's that thunderstorm over lakewood. we can see heavy rain over portions of ocean county heading toward toms river and forked river. lightening, thunder and rain associated with that. zooming to the south, again we have this shower here moving toward cape may county, but in west cape may point, we will see rain moving in the next several minutes and lightening there as well. this is just the appetizer so to speak, scattered showers and then are storms this evening but it is tomorrow we will get better chance for heavy rain with shower or storm. tonight warm and humid.

scattered showers around. thursday showers and storms heavy at times and watch for ponding on area roadways during the evening commute. that is how long this front will take through the region. temperatures it is hot 91 in reading. ninety-two at philadelphia airport. eighty-six in millville. ninety-four in allentown at the moment. not as bad down the shore temperatures in the 80's there but it is our sixth heat wave of the season. we define heat waves offing three days of 90 plus temperatures and here we go september 7th through 9th is number six. it has been very hot since the end of july especially all the way through beginning of september. future weather shows shower, thunderstorms scattered throughout overnight hours. in the day tomorrow that showers and storms will get more numerous. even overnight at 1:00 a.m. showers and storms around. we will start with shower and thunderstorm activity and heaviest is tomorrow afternoon and evening. there is 4:00 p.m. a as farrah as philadelphia is concerned here are four models, anywhere between an inch and inch and a half of rain is expect for the day

eyewitness weather forecast in just a few minutes. >> talk about a frightening flight passengers on this british airways plane narrowly escaped when one of the engines burst into flames before taking off from las vegas last night. cbs news correspondent, maria real has latest on the investigation of what went wrong on the tarmac. >> reporter: it was moments before take off when flames and smoke rippled from the british airways, boeing triple seven. >> scary. flames coming through the plane. >> reporter: pilot reported a fire in the twin engine plane's left engine. >> reporter: within minutes the 157 passengers and 13 crew evacuated using the inflatable emergency shoot. >> anything can happen, explosion as loan, yes, serious thing. >> reporter: dominic worthington was a pass evening

including what is called the future of the television. the new version of the apple tv features a third party app store, a new remote and siricon troll. apple is making a bigger, faster ipad. i pad pro is almost 13 inches wide, big enough to support a full sized keyboard and iphones are getting an upgrade. 6s and 6s plus have new touch technology and faster processors. the first batch of the new products will be a available later this month. swimming pools are still opened, the temperatures, still warm and the kids are barely back in school. is it too early to think about the holidays. >> well, well, three on your side consumer reporter jim donovan find in terms of the financial planning, experts say no, shoppers might consider their list right now. >> that is right. shoppers may roll their eyes when they see holiday items on store shelves this month and next but it may be financially beneficial for some consumers. we still have months to go but it is still not too early to
