a state of emergency in california. some of the state's fastest burning wildfires in decades erupt over the weekend forcing thousands of evacuations and leaving hundreds of homes in smoldering ruins. the presidential campaign gets contentious in both parties. a new poll finds hillary clinton falling behind and donald trump pulling away, but one republican is gaining ground on the gop front-runner. the pressure on the left side. he drops the ball! throws! caught! touchdown! >> sunday night stunner. the dallas cowboys and new york giants go down to the wire to cap off the first full day of nfl action. miss georgia! >> a new miss america is

crowned! while the pageant makes amends with an infamous former winner. >> on behalf of today's organization, i want to apologize to you. this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, september 14th, 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. california is battling two out of control wildfires. at least one person has been killed and nearly 500 homes are destroyed and over 20,000 have been forced to evacuate. these are just two of the fires burning throughout the drought-stricken state. the so-called butte fire is burning southeast of sacramento and at least 81 homes have been destroyed there. but over 6,000 more buildings are threatened. the valley fire burning north of san francisco is even worse.

at least 400 homes were destroyed in the town of middletown and another thousand buildings destroyed or partially burned. chelsea edwards is in middletown. good morning, chelsea. >> reporter: good morning. it is devastating entire neighborhoods destroyed by the fire and shells are all that remains on some streets. this apartment complex in middletown, it is in ruins. the shelled cars are left in the parking lot and still smoke rising from the rubble. emergency officials here in california say this summer's fires are some of the worst they have seen in decades. the fire is burning 20 miles north of napa valley is now california's top priority. a state of emergency and other fire crews are moved here to stop the destruction. >> it's chaos. it's just utter chaos. there is nothing like it. i've never seen anything like that. >> reporter: embers rain down on

people and jumped a highway and drivers forced to abandon their cars and at least one person died. >> within 12 hours, we had over 40,000 acres and that is unheard of. >> reporter: officials say the four-year drought and erratic winds fueled this blaze that exploded in size at a rate not seen in 30 years. the fire burned hundreds of homes down to their foundations here in middletown. this used to be a 50-unit apartment complex. hundreds of evacuees have nothing to go back to. >> we are fairly certain that we have lost our homes. >> reporter: and more homes could still be lost. the forecast calls for gusty, unpredictable winds. the same condition that caused the fire to grow so quickly. about 1,000 firefighters working to try to get control of the valley fire that is burning right now, so far, though, it is zero percent contained. >> chelsea, before you go, can you tell us a little bit more about the weather conditions and what is expected for today? >> reporter: it certainly is much cooler today than it was yesterday. and, yesterday, one of the

biggest problems were the winds. there were wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour and fire officials say that was lifting embers from the fire and dropping them on homes and made we are hoping for a break today, although no promises. >> they need all of the help they can get. we will have the latest on the california wildfires coming up on "cbs this morning." no one was injured when two passenger jets bumped into one another at los angeles international airport. it happened last night near the terminal as the united jet was arriving on a flight from new jersey. the united jet was stopped near its gate when an alaska airlines plane pushed away from the gate and clipped the wing of the united jet. we are learning this morning that americanairlines flew the wrong plane from los angeles to hawaii. this happened in late august. the mistake was caught midway through the flight which continued, without incident. the airbus 321, a twining in

jet, was not certified to fly long distances over water. some models have a certification called etops with more redundant systems and fire suppression equipment. this plane didn't. american started using a-321s a couple of weeks before the incident in this route. the republicans hold their second presidential debate as donald trump maintains his lead among the gop candidates. on the democratic side, hillary clinton is losing ground. bernie sanders is growing his lead over hillary clinton in new hampshire and iowa. a just released cbs news tracking poll finds sanders with a 22-point lead among democratic primary voters in new hampshire and 10-point lead in iowa. sanders message is strike ago chord with middle class voters. >> the american people in my strong view are sick and tired of establishment politics of establishment economics, and

they want a candidate who is prepared to stand up to the big money interests. >> reporter: last night, sanders wrapped up a weekend of campaigning in the south. it's in the south that, for now, clinton is holding her own. the same poll that shows her losing in new hampshire and iowa, shows her firmly in the lead in south carolina. on the republican side, donald trump leads in all three states, but former neurosurgeon ben carson is just four points behind in iowa and trump is taking notice. >> well, i'm a deal maker. i'll make great deals for this one. ben can't do that. he's a doctor and he's not a deal maker and i'll make great deals for our country which is very important. >> reporter: over the weekend trump said carson is a nice man but doesn't haveing in to be president. >> i recognize that i have plenty of energy. you know, operating on people to 10, 12, sometimes greater than 20 hours at a time and making critical decisions after many

hours of intense work. >> reporter: and the man most thought would be the republican front-runner broke out an old t-shirt to try to rouse the faithful in his home state of florida. >> that's the party i believe in. reagan and bush. >> reporter: this week's debate may be critical for bush to try to make up ground. tonight, donald trump holds a rally in dallas. >> don champion in new york, thank you, don. no knowledge of the server being wiped. clinton has said for months that she deleted her personal accordance but "the washington post" reports there is a difference between e-mails being deleted and wiped. deleted e-mails can often be restored. meaning thousands of clinton e-mails may be recovered. kim davis, the county clerk in kentucky, who refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses, returns to work today. davis spent five days in jail

because she dissipatbade a cour order to hand out the licenses. her assistants did issue the licenses but davis' attorney says it's unclear what she will do today. the judge says he will throw her back behind bars if they refuses. european ministers are hold an emergency meeting in brussels today to discuss the migrant kris. yesterday, germany had on its board with austria. last week germany opened its borders to the refuges and now admits it can't cope with the thousands of people arriving every day. over the weekend, 16,000 arrived in munich alone. coming up on "the morning news" phoenix arrests. three people are in custody for copycat. a partner with the miss america organization is charged with ugly allegations. this is the "cbs morning news."

huge plumes of smoke in southern japan this morning as the volcano forced the evacuation of dozens of tourists. the eruption prompted authorities to raise the alert level for the area and it banned people from approaching the volcano. there were no immediate reports of injuries. police in arizona are trying to determine who is responsible for a series of highway shootings. there are 11 incidents, mostly along interstate 10 in phoenix under investigation. authorities have a person of interest in custody, and they made three other arrests sunday for what may be copycats. brian webb has the latest. >> reporter: three 18-year-olds were arrested for launching rocks from a sling shot at several vehicles saturday night. a husband and wife whose windshield was shattered got a license plate and called authorities who made the arrest sunday. >> this is probably a copycat,

but it's still serious. >> reporter: phoenix drivers have been on edge since august 28 29th since the shootings started. nobody has been seriously hurt. last week, authorities arrested a person of interest. 19-year-old oscar de la torre munoz is behind bars and hasn't been charged with the highway shooting. there hasn't been a confirmed incident since last thursday. >> none of us should have to drive the freeway or any roadway and be roirworried about people shooting items at our vehicles. >> reporter: authorities say the trio of teenagers shot rocks at approximately 10 pedestrians and four other vehicles on saturday night. brian webb for cbs news. straight ahead, 9 new york giants choke. quarterback eli manning throws away the game in the final two minutes against the cowboys!

"moneywatch." jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning. wall street has its eyes on this week's federal reserve meeting waiting to see if the board has enough confidence in the economy to raise interest rates. if the fed acts, this would be the first rate increase since '0420 2008. if it doesn't happen this week, traders still expect an increase by december. stock markets in asia were mole lower. uncertainty about interest rates and the chinese economy pushed stocks higher on friday. the dow gained 102 points. the s&p road 8 and nasdaq up 26. gasoline prices have dropped again. the average price of gasoline in the u.s. fell 27 cents since august 23rrd and now at $2.44 a

a hellish scene this morning in northern california. you're looking at what is called the valley fire burning about two hours north of san francisco. it's one of two major wildfires that erupted in size over the weekend, destroying hundreds of homes and forcing thousands of people to flee. one of the hardest hit towns is middletown, california, in lake county, where a state of emergency has been declared. cbs chelsea edwards is there this morning. chelsea, what is the latest? >> reporter: we learned overnight the valley fire has turned b0oñdeadly. state fire officials confirm that one person has been killed. although right now, they are not you can see the devastation is widespread in middletown. i'm standing at a former

apartment complex that is completely in ruins and the smoke is still coming up from some of the rubble here and charred cars were left in the parking lot after this fire. the fire broke out on saturday. it erupted in size and swallowing up at least 78 square miles in less than 48 hours. very quick moving. we are told the lake fire has destroyed at least 400 homes and possibly as many as 1,000 and it also prompted and entire town of 3,000 people to evacuate. the flames spreading so fast and leaving the residents to leave to a chaotic scene. >> the wind creeping up and i think the wind changed direction and sent it toward middletown and i feel very bad for the people there. i think there was a lot of destruction so far. >> on the phone with them letting them know what is going on. some says their houses burnt down and some say, no, it's not burnt down so i many sending pictures to them saying your house is okay or it's not okay. >> reporter: the scene in middletown during daylight hours

was horrific. entire blocks of homes were left smoldering and cars burned so hot, their tires melted. four firefighters suffered second-degree burns area were air-lifted to the hospital. meanwhile, the other fire causing big problems this morning is about 150 miles west of where we are. that one is called the butte fire and it's also prompted the governor to declare an emergency in two counties. that fire has destroyed at least 81 homes since it started last week and it's proving to be a tough fight for firefighters as well. it's burned more than 65,000 acres and is just 25% contained. firefighters are trying to burn away fuel but they say the terrain combined with the dry conditions makes this very unpredictable. back here in middletown. about a thousand firefighters now are trying to get that valley fire under control. so far, though, it is zero percent contained. >> very dire situation. chelsea edwards in middletown, california, thank you very much. coming up after your local
