from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". happening now, at noon, chopper three live right here over an explosion and a fire ripped through the south jersey building, just moments after construction workers hit a gas line. good afternoon, i'm erika von tiehl. now that blast was so strong that police chief says they felt it at the station clear across the street. he came out and took this video right away. the explosion happened on the 100 block of north broadway in pennsville, salem county. our new jersey reporter, clever bryant, joins us at the scene, with the latest details

for us, cleve? >> reporter: erika, the fire department here is putting out hot spots in south jersey industries has crews here to make sure that the area is safe. this is one of those situations that falls under the cat gore at this looks bad, but could have been a lot worse, because no one was home at the time of the the explosion. the structure that you see is actually a law office on the first floor, and apartment on the second floor. the law office belongs to john jordan, he's an attorney in town, also the municipal judge. on the second floor in that apartment the police chief tells us that the resident had actually left for the day and was not home at the time of the explosion. according to the chief who was here very quickly on the scene, it was a gas leak that went into the basement of the building, something then sparked an explosion, then a very large fire at the structure, right now the south jersey industry, again, are trying to make sure that the area is secure. we talked to some resident in the area who say that it was allowed bang.

it woke them from some of their sleep. they came outside to see some towering flames. >> get up, than were flames out the front window, on the side of the house. and, first of all, hopefully nobody is, there which i'm glad there wasn't anybody. that will was about it, we just stood and watched them all arrive, and then get water on it. >> reporter: several resident tell me that this is actually perhaps the second or third time that they've had to have evacuations, or be on alert, because of gas leaks. the chief tells me that there are gas lines being replaced all throughout town. so, right now, the police chief, the mayor, and a representative from south jersey gas, are meeting over at town hall to discuss what stays, what they should proceed fourth when it comes to this construction. cleve bryan, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> incredible video, cleve, thank you. some terrifying moments now for people in center city amounts, early today, when these flames forced them to run for their lives.

"eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo shows us they did all escape huge fire, but it meant nervous night watching firefighters try to save their homes. >> it is the terrifying site hundreds of people woke up to in center city tuesday morning. eyewitness cam video from inside the chancellor apartment on 13th street show the neighboring building engulfed in flames. resident feared those flames would jump top their building at any minute. >> i heard the noise of the fire alarm. i looked out the window. and it was terrible. >> on the 15th floor, looked down, just saw the flames coming up. >> they saw the sparks, and i felt the heat, and i smelled like the smoke. i'm just so thankful that they were able to get. >> the it wasn't as easy for others, as 100 firefighters battled the flame, they also made sure everyone made it out of their home safely. >> came up, knock on the door real loud. >> this is what they found outside. some setting foot on the ground in the nick of time. >> as we were coming outside of the building, we saw the

building next-door on fire, ball of flames. >> fire started here at 13th and chancellor street just before 4:30, took crews more than hour to extinguish the flames. but crews remained on scene all morning, as dark turned to light. >> despite this inconvenience, fortunately, there were no injuries. investigators, however, are now trying to figure out what sparked the fire. it started in a bar and restaurant under construction. >> l & i was out here about week ago. they have permit. per milt dollars as a bar restaurant. so, right now, that's all we have. >> this morning, though, fire crews just relieved to have saved two neighboring apartment buildings, and everyone in them. in center city, jan carabeo, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> now to the forecast, final days of summer and we could not ask for better weather. meteorologist, justin drabick, out on the skydeck, and in the words of kevin or floor director, just spectacular. >> now, kevin saying that, then you know it is to feels good. because he's always complaining about the heat and

humidity. we always battle back and forth about that. but yes, it is real nice mid-september weather going on, cool mornings, giving way to warm afternoons. this morning, again little chilly. you may have needed the jacket. woke up to many areas reaching upper 40's. quakertown, woodbine new jersey, millville, at glenn, collegeville, all reaching the upper 40's. other suburbs, too, so again, now with the sunshine, really starting to heat things up quickly. upper 70s showing up in philadelphia, and almost 80 degrees in wilmington, south jersey, feeling good. right now, mid and upper 70s, checking some of the suburbs right now, palmyra new jersey coming in at 80 degrees, warm spot. winds much lighter than yesterday. so, it is really not making things feel chim i at all, earlier this morning, early afternoon, they're out of the northwest at about 10 miles per hour or list. still, it is a dry winds flow. so no humid toy talk about. storm scan3, nice and quiet, can't even find cloud out here in the sky. what to expected to, just lot of sunshine, slightly warmer than yesterday, just overall

late summer went 82 agree for the high, upper 70s at the shore, mid 70s in the poconos. how long this will last, in our forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> hard to believe it is almost here. just 11 days away from pope francis, historic visit to philadelphia. sources tell cbs-3, the person behind that foiled security threat against the pontiff, was a south jersey teen. that teen was taken into custody over a month ago, after allegedly making unspecified threats. we've also learned that during the pope's three city visit to the u.s., he'll deliver 18 speeches in english. he'll make stops in new york, and washington, d.c., before coming here to philly. "eyewitness news" reporter greg argue owes joins us now, near eakin's oval, where the heavy build something beginning for the papal stage. it will be big. greg, good afternoon. >> good afternoon, as well, it will be big, in fact, this is a closed but active

construction site behind me. see dozen of people going to transform eakin's oval in just few days into massive stage that will be used for all of the events when the pope arrives in town. last week, workers prepared the ground for the stage and today the actual construction begins. this will be the center point for saturday's festival of families event and sunday's mass, expected to attract tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people. take a look at some of the artist renderings of what the final stage will look like. it is being designed by a delaware based company, the lightings production and staging company, also building the stage for the pontiff appearances in washington, d.c. >> you can see some of the pieces of the stage. i want to give you some terms of signs. those are just portion, each about 4 feet wide by 8 feet long and these two stages, one here in philly, and one in washington, d.c., will be comprised of 3,000 of those.

so, erika, in terms of size, this thing will be huge. we're live in eakin's oval, greegree ghost, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> that's great. see it all the way back where we'll be, greg, thank you. >> "eyewitness news" has complete guide for the papal visit and world meeting of families g to cbsphilly.com/papal visit. >> crews have been resuming searching for survivors afternoon flooding swept away homes and cars on the border of utah and arizona. bystanders helped rescue women and children in vehicles stranded in hill dale. the community south of salt lake city once base for polec mess secretary led by warren jeff. flooding there has already claimed eight lives. search efforts were called off last night because of treacherous conditions. >> emergency crews in last ankle less are also dealing with tremendous flooding. look at this. in the city's cyprus park yesterday, rescuers pulled at least two people and a dog from their per chest in trees. that's what they were stuck. after several people tried to stay to escape the high water

of the los angeles river. there were no reported injuries from the flooding in la, but a lot of damage. wild fires continue to threaten neighborhoods across northern california. a fire north of san francisco has been burning nearly unchecked since saturday, reducing hundreds of homes and businesses, to ashes. california's seen about 6,000 wild fires this year, about 1500 more than this time last year. and, one person is dead, after several student hurt after school bus overturned on houston highway. that school bus driver, and four students, were hospitalized. authorities say the bus was head today a high school, when the crash happened. it is unclear whether the person killed was on the bus or if other vehicles were involved. police are also investigating the appearance of vandalism at neighborhood playground in somerton. "eyewitness news" at boil playground on stevens road where the vandals spray painted and vandalized playground equipment.

>> in less than an hour, eagles head coach chip kelly face the media after that disappointing start to the football season. the birds came up short on the road against the atlanta falcons. now, right away the falcons jumped out to 20 to three lead before the first half was over. penn charter product, matt ryan, shook off two interceptions to throw for two touchdowns. the eagles mount add furious come-back though. new eagle demarco murray scored two touchdowns in the second half. but they came down to field goal attempt. oh, so hard to watch that in the final minutes, that kicker, cody parke was off target. if only he made. that will at lan it wins 26-24. >> eagles fans are watching the game all over our area, including there at pj wheelihan's in cherry hill. the eagles were not firing on all cylinders against the falcons, of course, but bird fans say they're optimistic about the season. >> we'll get it together. no wore ills. one lost, that's it. >> started off little slow. they need to make some

afternoons. >> just beautiful. >> live it up. next several days, mid september weather, as we finish off the summer season officially next wednesday, first day of fall. it does arrive. let's take you outside, still, some nice beach weather going, people taking advantage of it, now is the time to get down there, yes, second season, no crowds, than just shows it all. just few people hanging out on the beach at margate right now, full sunshine, that ocean still comfortable, again, make sure the lifeguards are around, a lot of them now off duty for the season. so you want to play it safe. do you swim into the ocean. september so far, seven days, have been at least 90 degrees, so it has been hot start to the month. how about this? fourteen out of 15 days, we had some sunshine, really only saturday where weed the clouds and rain. and we did have a day of 96 degrees, that was the hottest day of the year so far. practically perfect, if you think about this weather, let's check it all off. sunshine, warm temps, low winds, all coming up for the next several days, compared to 24 hours ago, about 8 degrees warmer right now for

philadelphia, and most locations here. so that's a sign of some warmer air, starting to work its way in. don't worry, humidity levels stay low. mid, upper 70s across the delaware valley, full sunshine, neice breeze off the land. that's warming coastal temperatures up, as women. seventy-four barnegat. seventy-six ocean city recalling rehoboth beach upper 70s, nothing happening on storm scan3, and if you watch the weather tomorrow, it will look like this, as women. that's all because high pressure is just right over the mid-atlantic t blocks any storm systems from moving on by. see full sunshine. that allows temperatures to warm back up to the 80s, so another repeat of today on wednesday, just a little warmer, same deal on thursday, guess what, friday, no difference, high pressure right on top of us, sunshine, once again, highs above average in the 80s, now, check this out. future weather model. i don't think i've seen this in a long timement going through time here, nothing showing up. not even the clouds. so mainly clear skies, again, tonight, look at that, cloud tomorrow afternoon across the mountains.

that's all we will be dealing w that's t just basically full sunshine, thursday, same story. so if you have outdoor plans, it looks great, neck several days. temperatures do reach the lower 80s for the warm spot this afternoon, so getting little bit warmer. you can feel it, sun industrial strong. tonight another cool night. fifty's through about 60 degrees, so comfortable start to the wednesday, and wednesday starts to warm up. look at that, mid 80s for afternoon highs. keep in mind, 78 is where we should be for this time of year. forecast this afternoon, again, abundant sunshine, 82 degrees, northwest breeze, pretty light, 10-mile per hour or levels. clear, comfortable tonight, low of around 06 for center city, a's for the suburbs, good night for phillies, first pitch, 7:00. coming home from the game nice, upper 60s, here's that extended forecast, going full sun through the rest of the work week, mid 80s for the high temperatures, right now, the weekends still looking good. throw in some clouds in there for sunday, maybe passing shower in some spots. i think we stay dry. look at that, finishing off
