it. makes the cut on von miller to pick up the first. phil: good job by von miller. and good job by smith getting into the air and getting the first down. but it fooled von miller and he was still able to recover and make smith cut back inside. jim: alex smith says hey, i don't want to have to do that on too many occasions. first and 10. backup tight end o'shaunessy down to the 17. his second catch of the tight and -- nights is it's a big one from the rookie out of illinois state. phil: if you're going to blitz, of course they're a base
11:16 pm
hitting team. o'shaunessy, number 18. going to the right. you have to know that and you have to play it safe on the tackle. t.j. ward got too aggressive. jim: picked up 30. two catches, one for 24, one for 30. phil: he overplayed it. trying to knock the football down thinking he was going to get there on time and was not close. jim: charles. and a lot of work there for three yards before he's tackled by trevathan. the broncos' secondary, tavon webster injure anded an ankle and is questionable to return. charles with that last carry got to 100 right on the nose.
11:17 pm
second and 7. puts josh bush into the secondary and it's maclin looking to throw. now looking to take off. with speed but unable to get around stewart. as well as bruton. phil: boy, and they caught the broncos with their second team outside rushers shane ray and shaq barrett what a job. watch up top. they stay outside. alex smith peeled back and it still wasn't going to work. the defense all over it, following the ball. nobody overcommitting. and stopping a unique or a trick play by andy reid. jim: a loss of three and a time-out called by k.c. referee: the first charged time-out, kansas city. 30-second time-out. jim: 6:40 to go and a third and 10 coming up. again, next thursday, the

redskins and the giants will be coming your way on "thursday night football." all here on cbs and nfl network. that's next thursday. washington and the new york giants. what do you think is going to happen here? third down play coming up for the chiefs, snapping it inside the red zone. phil: everything we talked about before the game, all the deception that kansas city was going to have hasn't worked out here tonight. even when they fool the defense, the speed of the broncos, they can recover and make the play. here on third down i look for them to call a very safe play. if i was the broncos, stay back, make them throw it underneath. don't overplay and give smith a chance to throw to the end zone for a touchdown. jim: again, they have not converted the entire game on third down.
11:19 pm
smith. and it's intercepted by harris, who breaks a tackle and another one! finally brought down by grubbs. alex smith was hit when he threw it. phil: well, they played a safe defense. you can do that when you have pass rushers and it results in a turnover. malik jackson. jim: second red zone turnover by kansas city tonight. ven now has one simple plan. just pick a size. small, medium, large and extra large. if you need less data, pick small. if you need more, go with extra large-- a whopping 12 gigs for $80 a month plus $20 per phone.
11:20 pm
pick a size. change it up anytime. it's the simple way to get the best network. and now, get up to $400 when you switch. only at verizon. the one with the high-strength military-grade,the f-150. aluminum-alloy body bolted to a high-strength steel frame. and guess what? it made the strongest statement any truck can make. it pulled a 5-star safety rating... on all sides... for every cab configuration.
11:21 pm
'cuz when they say military-grade, they mean: "battle tested." this is the ford f-150. and every other truck is history. jim: nfl "thursday night football" is sponsored by -- all of last season, the chiefs gave it away only once in the red zone. they've done it twice tonight. it's anderson. and again nowhere to go. mauga holds him to no gain.
11:22 pm
phil: you know, jim, when you've got good pass rushers they're going to fake the blitz, drop back the whole time. you can just say we don't have to gamble. so many teams in the league have to blitz to get pressure on the quarterback. malik jackson that time. they have so many guys on the defensive side that can win one-on-one matchups in the passing situations and that time it was malik jackson. jim: that had the look of a big return once kelce was able to break free. second and 10. manning's pass is complete. but daniels is pile driven to the ground after five. third and 5 coming up. mauga again on the tackle, two straight. phil: this will be an interesting call for the kansas

city chiefs. you're playing a field goal kicker that can kick it from a long way out. i know they're not in field goal range yet. but do you take a little chance here, blitz peyton manning and try to get the defense off the field by catching them off guard with the blitz? jim: they have a lot of defenders on the line. they back off. here's the pass and it's tipped and incomplete. two different attempts at the pick. first it was peters then it was abdullah. phil: well, television a great bluff by the defense. i you thought they were going to blitz. they dropped back. how about peters? a rookie outside. he had been not afraid, i'll say that. he is challenging the receiver no matter who it is out there. showing why he was a number one pick -- or first-round draft pick to the nfl. jim: boy, has he made plays in his first two nfl games.
11:24 pm
including an interception returned for a tony: in tonight's second quarter. the chiefs are going to get the football back after forcing another three and out. and a flag is down. near the line of scrimmage. phil: looks like it's going to be holding. i thought. referee: holding, number 30 on the kicking team. that 10-yard penalty will be enforced from the end of the pick. first down, kansas city. phil: sometimes there's a good penalty. oh, yeah. bruent inside. grabs frank zombo to keep him from blocking the kick. kansas city once again, good field position. i mean, jim, the chiefs -- if they don't win this game -- they've had so many chances tonight where they've had everything going their way.
11:25 pm
field position, momentum and they squander it, make a big mistake, call the wrong play. of course, giving credit, too, to the broncos hanging in there and changing their offense and finding a way to score some points -- points. jim: the markoff puts the ball all the way up to the 39. charles surrounded by three broncos this time. including sylvester williams. phil: he was going to break outside but danny tremendous vathen came out of nowhere and made -- trevathan came out of nowhere and go back inside. jim: chiefs about 25 yard away from being in field goal position. second and 9. it's kelce.
11:26 pm
he has the catch and he's got all kinds of running room. down to the 27. phil: almost looked like the same play that we saw from o'shaunessy. it's a blitz and bruton, number 30. kind of goes for the play. goes underneath. again, when it's a blitz, cover your guy, protect against the run and twice the broncos' defense has not done that. jim: 28 yards, smith to kelce. phil: that was also a very good throw by alex smith. coverage was tight. put it right on the money. jim: kelce sits out this play. it's charles. nice piece of running hoar. let's go down to tracy. tracy: that's right. and on that reception from travis kelce, t.j. ward was not out there. he's been in and out the last
11:27 pm
few drives, dealing with cramps. keep in mind that he did not play a full game yet this season because he was suspended last week, illinois. jim: when he's been in there, he's been effective. phil: yes, he has. overall tonight he's covered kelce pretty well but you have to be looking at the clock if you're the chiefs. find a way to grind out a first down here. you're in field goal range. jim: second and 2 and it's charles again. what a run. he's got the first down, as he shreds the denver defense and he's putting up big numbers tonight. hailing from the same hometown as wade phillips, the coordinator who's trying to stop him. port arthur, texas. phil: just a little trap inside. what a nice job. grubbs gets a block to the inside. then duvernay-tardif gets a
11:28 pm
hop. kilgo backed away and gives jamaal charles a big space to run in. jim: first and goal to go. he's got 122 on the night, looking for more. able to shake off a tackle behind the line of scrimmage. phil: the big thing is here, gary kubiak has two time-outs left and the two-minute warning. jim: so the broncos elect to take a time-out here on the north side of the two-minute mark. phil: good time-out. 2:32 so that was a good time-out to save it, put it in the hand of your quarterback, let him deal with the clock and not let kansas city take it down. jim: coming up after the game, it's the mazda postgame show. interviews and analysis. of tonight's game.
11:29 pm
this marks the fourth red zone visit of the evening by kansas city. so far in the first three tritches, three points and two -- trips, three points and two giveaways. so the broncos down to one time-out. phil: a couple of ways to play this. i would think gary kubiak, if they run the football, is going to call a time-out immediately. that would be their last time-out. then the two-minute warning. they would give peyton manning, if you hold them to a field goal, enough time to drive this team in field goal position. jim: second and goal. knile davis. knile davis to the end zone for the touchdown! phil: alex smith almost falls down. dangerous handoff but like lsh
11:30 pm
look at this side. demarcus ware up the field. everybody else goes inside so there is nobody there to block. jim: he got tripped up trying to come back out of center but it's an eight-yard untouched touchdown scamper by knile davis. no mistake in the red zone on this occasion. on red thursday in kansas city. extra point, again this year, from 33 yards out. look at bruton go over the top. phil: he used one of the players. i think he stepped on a player and jumped. jim: and they have a flag for that. phil: he launched himself. jim: and that's not legal. there's a flag on the field for it. phil: but they caught the broncos in a blitz on knile davis's touchdown run. referee: unsportsmanlike
11:31 pm
conduct, number 30, denver. a 15-yard penalty will be enforced on the kickoff. jim: let's bring in mike carey and mike, take us through this mike: you watch on the punt. the number 30 tries to jump over but lands on players. that's a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct. jim: actually, he didn't launch off of anyone. he actually leaped right over the snapper. mike: he tried to go over but got his legs caught on top of the snapper. jim: and that rule is being really emphasized now to try to cut down on injuries. mike: correct. that's one of those safety rooms and very good for the careers of the players. jim: that means the chiefs will be kicking off from the 50. they mark off the 15 yards. phil: i always think -- first
11:32 pm
off, what a drive by the chiefs to get a touchdown. they beat the blitz twice. once with the pass, once with the run. most coaches say to heck with it, kick it right out of the end zone, make them start from the 20. jim: santos. kansas city happy to have this drive for denver begin at the 20. phil: see what happens, watch 94, demarcus ware goes to the outside. look at the blocks down inside. that's grubbs against darian stewart, a say. . he seals it and there's nobody for stephenson to even block. peyton manning, plenty of time. two-minute warning, one time-out. been in this situation hundreds of times in his career.
11:33 pm
jim: this pass, on the money for thomas. picks up 22. phil: crossers underneath. everybody is chasing underneath and that leaves a big volleyed behind the linebackers and peyton manning throws it in there perfectly. jim: that is the longest play of the first two games of the season for denver, 22 yards. manning's throw this time out of reach at the two-minute warning. that was intended for daniels. the broncos will have one time-out to operate with for these last two minutes. needing to drive down, find the end zone, convert the p.a.t.
11:34 pm
11:35 pm
11:36 pm
pressure on your pass rushers to find a way to get to peyton manning. jim: second and 10. manning. down the field. what a catch. it's thomas. pretty tight coverage but the pass was perfect. fleming on the coverage. thomas grabs it. phil: listen, you have one of the biggest, strongest receivers in the nfl. throws it behind hum. go up and snatch that football out of the air. nice throw by peyton manning. jim: now at the chiefs' 42. got time. he's got anderson for very little. wrapped up by derrick johnson. phil: that's exactly what you wanted to do. stay back, make him throw it. they collapsed the pocket a little bit and johnson comes up and makes the tackle.
11:37 pm
don't let them get the extra yards after the catch. jim: and you don't take your last remaining time-out here. broncos second and 8. guns it. was there contact? yeah, here comes the flag. he was looking for sanders. phil: sanders was not looking for the football. did look like there was contact, though. referee: there is no foul for pass interference. correction. third down. jim: mike carey, what was it, uncatchable? because they threw the flashes i thought on peters. mike: it's a tight one but i think that's one of those that you want to leave that flag out. you had contact. the ball was catchable in my
11:38 pm
opinion. phil: i think you're right. jim: sure looked like it. third and 8. manning's pass. caught by the broncos. thomas. who out-battled the rookie for the football. phil: he turned just like you do a rebounder in a basketball game. jim: thomas now, eight catches, 116 yards. manning. in the direction of sanders. incomplete. phil: what keeps this drive going -- watch demaryius thomas. oh, my gosh, he's got him boxed
11:39 pm
out the whole way. you could see peters saw the football but he couldn't find a way to get around him and knock it down. jim: demaryius has 54 yards on this drive alone and again, over 100 for the night. second and 10 with 53 seconds remaining. push. and out of reach -- pressure and out of reach for jordan norwood. phil: abdullah, the safety, comes on a blitz off the slot. they see it but then they let the other defender, abdullah come free. that was phillip gaines off the slot. referee: five-yard penalty from the previous spot. automatic first down. jim: there was a flag for holding on the far side. defensive holding call.
11:40 pm
on fleming. instead of the big third and 10, the broncos have a new set of downs at the 19. phil: top of the screen. that's a good call. jim: off the knee it looked like of caldwell. phil: he had what he wanted. he had a corner outside with caldwell coming inside but he needed just a little bit more on the football to get it there. top of your screen, number 12. jim: houston got a hit on manning. phil: good recovery by fleming too.
11:41 pm
jim: 45 seconds. four on the down clock. peyton down the field but off the fingertips of norwood, who had a play on that football. phil: one of their favorite plays, they run a pick on the outside and it's just slightly overthrown by peyton manning. the outside receiver came inside, they caused a little traffic jam. oh, man, look how close it was on the pylon camera. jim: again, "the mazda postgame show "after the game with all the interviews and anals on this opening -- analysis on this opening thursday night thriller. we have a time-out call build
11:42 pm
kansas city, leaving the chiefs with one. phil: that last play we saw where he just missed it, that was a play, one of their special 'tis over the years. he has hit that so many years for a touchdown and even though the chiefs had coverage, they still got norwood into position where a perfect throw would have been a touchdown. good time-out by the chiefs. let the defense rest. let those pass rushers get ready to put pressure one more time. look how close that is. jim: thought -- should that have been caught? phil: no, i think it was just out of his reach. it would have been a spectacular catch had he made it. jim: norwood only 5'11". here we go with third down coming up.
11:43 pm
manning across the middle. he's there for the touchdown! emmanuel sanders. and, of course, the p.a.t. is no longer automatic. but they'll try it from 33 yards to tie the game. phil: almost the same concept that they had a couple of plates before. they caught them in a defense, the corners playing outside, fleming. top of your screen, the little stutter. that's what it was. before we saw a little out move and inside but this time that little stutter made fleming hesitate and a perfect throw by peyton manning. jim: a beautiful, tight spiral by manning. and the point after dead center. and the game is tied, and guess what it was manning to sanders on third down again. phil: what a drive. some really timely throws. but this reminds we with -- me
11:44 pm
of the broncos of last year, where they have all these plays that they run at you and you just can't keep up with them. they're picking up -- you, the screens. and that little stutter, very clever and extremely well done by sanders. jim: the broncos drive 80 yards in 10 plays in 1:51 seconds and for the second time tonight it's manning to emmanuel on a third down play to the end zone. and now the chiefs with 36 second to go in regulation. they have one time-out remaining. phil: tell you what could happen. you look at this team. the broncos, as they throw the football, you got demaryius thomas with emmanuel sanders out there. you can't double them both, and they're both number one receivers, jim. you know, whatever you want to
11:45 pm
say. the guy with the football, where you want to throw to them as much as you can. most teams just have one. this broncos team have two big-time wide receivers. jim: they became last season the fifth tandem in nfl history to have both wideouts over 100 yards -- 1,000 yards receiving in a season. phil: what would be your answer to winning this? jim: go back to look like they did last year. phil: some teams running you out by running the football. he just keeps throwing it. there was no pass rush really that whole time. he got time to see it and they set you up with all these moves, the variety of plays and it really came through for them. jim: what do you think kansas city will do here with the time-out? phil: i think they're going to be a little more careful than
11:46 pm
they were with that drive before the half. i don't know, you take a knee, run the shotgun. hope jamaal charles can break a run and get you some runs where you can take a couple of runs but you have to be extremely careful first. it looks like they're going to throw it. jim: yeah, out of the gun. three wides. charles. jim: the ball is out! it is picked up by the broncos! it is in the end zone for an unbelievable touchdown! a flag is out at the line of scrimmage. darian stewart knocked it out of charles' hands. referee: there was no flag on the play. no foul. the ruling on the field was a fumble, recovered by denver. tony:. jim: oh, my goodness. the man who saved the game last sunday, stewart, the former raven, knocked it loose and the
11:47 pm
number one pick a year ago for the broncos scooped it up and took it to the house. no question it's out. oh, it was marshall. there was stewart that made the contact but it's marshall who reaches around and just pops it out. charles' second fumble lost tonight. phil: this will be a training reel for all teams. you know, instead of just -- you say well, let's just run it in case, whatever. the chances of something happening there is so slim but that's what can happen to you, instead of just kneeling on the football. jim: a training reel and a train wreck is what we've just watched. phil: yeah, you're right. you never -- well, this is a great job. hustling defense. watch brandon marshall, reaches in there. you know, the nfl players are so unbelievable now. everybody knows how to reach in, punch the football, knock it out and what a change.
11:48 pm
how about going back to when it was 14-0, the look on peyton manning's face to what we see now? and this whole broncos team. jim: everything is completely different. referee: after reviewing the play, the ruling on the field is confirmed. fumble, recovery, touchdown. phil: plays in situations, easy for us to say, that are going to be second guessed so much about that andy reid did at the end of the first half and here at the second half. jim: jamaal charles, remember, he fumbled in the first quarter. down deep with the chiefs threatening to go in now he fumbles in what very likely will be the difference in this game.
11:49 pm
phil: yeah, it's tough. jim: at least he held onto the helmet. phil: i'll tell you what we saw, too. first off, this is going to be a devastating defeat for the kansas city chiefs. beyond that. jim: oh, this is -- you know, you think about early season games that you have a hard time overcoming like the giants and now this one for the chiefs. off 14-point lead at home. you got the broncos on the ropes. you got a fading confidence level on that entire bronco offense. phil: well, it kind of shows you which we knew -- the broncos are a dangerous team on both side of the ball. we really thought their defense -- i think is going to be spectacular this year, be you they fight. we talked about peyton. he just keeps coming at you. he's not afraid when things go
11:50 pm
bad. he was playing a monday night game in san diego. he threw five interceptions. and he just kept on that football trying to win the game. jim: remember, the broncos just last sunday won on a defensive touchdown by aqib talib and now they are 27 seconds away from a defensive touchdown winning it again for them. this time brady roby. number 29 taking it 29 yards on the return. phil: you finally think you're in position to maybe overtake this broncos team. that's what you -- they've just been so overpowering the last couple of years. jim: can the chiefs pull off a miracle? smith across the 30. remember, they have only on
