has touched down in washington d.c. as he begins a six day u.s. trip, the pontiff's first ever trip to america. here in philadelphia, ribbon was cut officially opening the world meeting of families, which is of course the pope's final stop, this coming weekend. pilgrims around the world has come with the historic event in mind. good evening, i'm ukee washington. i'm jessica dean. we will have more on the beginning of the world meeting of families in just a moment but first tonight, the united states welcomes pope francis. "eyewitness news" reporter todd quinones traveled to the nation's capitol for pontiff's arrival and he joins us live now from washington d.c., todd. >> reporter: jessica, it was a historic moment, for all americans, and for the catholics it was a moment of pride and faith. stepping out, at 4:00 p.m. eastern time pope francis was greeted, chanting pope, welcome to the u.s.a.

this is first time in his life pope francis has stepped foot in the united states and when he did he was greeted by president barack obama and the first family as well as vice-president joe biden, his wife, and two granddaughters. during the pope's three city tour of the u.s. culminating with his trip in philadelphia pope francis is expect to continue what is being called, his revolution of normalcy, while stressing, the the future of humanity passes through the family. on tarmac today at joint base andrews he was greeted by cord nailed donald warill, we recently had a chance to talk to the cardinal to get a better sense of what we will hear from the pope over the next six days. >> i think it will be an extremely exciting time, and very positive. i suspect that his messages specially when he is speaking to congress is going to be a call for all have of us to be able to recollect nice that

paul, ii. reporting live from the pennsylvania convention center alexandria hoff for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". thanks very much. well, philadelphia hospitals are gearing up for an expected influx of patients during the papal weekend. they are prepared for any unforeseen emergencies. >> health reporter stephanie stahl is here with an inside look at the medical plan. >> reporter: lots of plans going on. several big hospitals, that are inside of the restricted zone have canceled elected surgery on friday, stocked up on supplies, and they are making extra space available for patients, and employees. hundreds of cots being delivered to penn presbyterian medical center for extra medical staff that will be camped out for the hospital for the papal visit. >> we are trying to prepare basically for about double or triple the volume. >> reporter: thinks one of the new most sophisticated trauma centers in the area. >> all of the equipment here, we can rotate things, with lights, monitors, oxygen, suction everything we need.

>> reporter: thinks where most severely injured patient would be treated. there is a super fast ct scanner doing full body images in ten seconds. doctor peter sandman, director of disaster preparedness say they are ready for usually merge cyst like heart attacks and much more. >> as a major trauma center we think through worst case scenarios. we do drills for biological, agents, chemical agents, simple mass casualty event. >> reporter: this is large decontamination unit and they have extra equipment for burn patients and ventilators. over the at hahnemann in the center of the papal activities is also all hand on deck this was the scene after the amtrak accident, hospitals are ready to quickly, switch into crisis management, if necessary. the at jefferson in addition to its regular emergency and trauma services is there now a new urgent care center at seventh and walnut. here they will treat less serious walk in patients. they are stocked up with extra supplies and plenty of crutches. >> now those hospitals inside

of the restricted zone are expected to have mainly patients transported by ambulance, and ambulances, will be able to move through the city. outside of the zone, cooper, lankenau, temple and others are ready for extra patient this is weekend. now in the areas where the pope will be, there will be three medical tents, set up, 2,000 medical staff taking care of folks that need some treatment out there. we're covered. >> be on our game and then some. >> stephanie, thanks very much. when pope francis arrived this weekend we will have live continuing coverage on cbs-3 from the time he land until the time he helped back to the vatican. we will be there every step of the way, during the pope's historic trip to philadelphia. we are closely tracking the papal forecast for this weekend. all a lie. >> reporter: mcillmalice in the middle of the civil suit against the archdiocese. criminal charges against an accused priest had been dropped by the d.a., have after their son, sean died from a drug overdose nearly two years ago. they tied his drug abuse to the sexual abuse his family says, that sean endured at the hand of the paris priest. >> his life was cut short, it didn't have to happen. the church would have did what it should have did. >> reporter: watching the celebration for pope francis is painful. >> i have no desire to meet the man. there is nothing he could meet the man that with rectify anything. >> reporter: clergy sex abuse scandal rocked philadelphia with two grand jury reports, naming priests names, detailing abuse, cover up, with the revelation of secret archives. tom kline is mcillmail's attorney in the civil case. >> we cannot put perpetrator in jail but we can hold the church accountable.

weather. shame we cannot push those days to the weekend, because we have a lot of questions surrounding that weekend forecast. lets get into it. lots to talk b lets start off with what is happening outside right now, very quiet scene taking you to the ben franklin parkway to the logan circle there. not a lot of folks out there. that camera is a completely different story as we head in the weekend. we have cameras all across the city. we will have continuing coverage all weekend of the papal visit and parkway cam will look a whole lot different at that point. but you can see the crowds are starting to disperse a little bit. take a look to the west of philadelphia, thinks our camera at kutztown area middle school and just in time for sunset, the sun has come out. we are seeing blue skies only 65 degrees right new but this clearing will continue through overnight hours. we are seeing cloud move away, and as they do so we are setting up a beautiful, first day of fall, tomorrow, with temperatures once again, a above average. so we will go from below average, cool, cloudy, to sunshine, and temps above the seasonal normal. seventy at the airport. 68 degrees in trenton. cool in he had looking and

lancaster as well. certainly feels like fall has arrived just in time for last couple of days of the summer. fall officially begins, the autumnal equinox at 4:21 a.m. tomorrow, so by the time we wake up, it is already going to be autumn, and we can say good bye to summer. let's start off with tonight's forecast. we will go down to 59 degrees. gradual clearing. comfortably cool. might need a light jacket but dress in layers. by afternoon you'll want short sleeves, mostly sunny, warm fall start. sending kid off to the bus stop hoodie with a short sleeve underneath. cool in the morning. but warm by the time they get out to recess. lets talk about the storm that will be an issue for us, creeping up the coast and all depend on the location of this high. this particular model has the rain south of here throughout the day sunday but notice how close it is, that high moves further north or weaker and this shifts to the north, we will be in the shower band here on sunday. as of right now, it looks like the best chance will be late sunday into monday, but definitely plan for the chance for wet weather because we
