washington, d.c. pope francis becomes the first pope in history, to address the united states congress. the pontiff called on congress to pursue a common good. and to respect individual freedom. >> good afternoon, i'm erika von tiehl, our pat ciarrocchi is on special assignment. this morning, as we mention, pope francis addressed joint meeting of congress called on law makers to help the poor and for dialogue on arrange every issues from immigration, to the death penalty. cbs's weijia jiang with the latest from her his visit from washington. >> reporter: pope francis talk about many different issues including immigration, climate change, and the sanctity of marriage and family. he wove in american values and history through the entire speech drawing huge applause, and many standing ovations. pope francis received a standing ovation, as lawmakers welcomed him to the heart of the us government. he's the first pope to address a joint meeting of congress.

to certainly and busy week for philadelphia. city officials are holding a news conference to discuss the impact of the world meeting of families and the papal visit too. "eyewitness news" reporter walt hunter joins us now at the convention center with the latest details for us, walt, good afternoon. >> hey, good afternoon, outside the world meeting of families here, you know, so much of our reporting has been about detail, very important details, you need to know about the papal visit, i have to tell you, today it is about feelings, you can just feel the excitement washing over you here, people from all over the world, and right now press conference underway inside the mayor, leaders of the hospitality industry in philadelphia, and other, talking about the very latest as we approach the papal visit. few minutes ago, the mayor had this to say emphasizing there are still hotel rooms available for folks who want to come down and see the pope. >> now that the world meeting of families congress is underway, we're anxiously awaiting the arrival of course of pope francis on saturday morning. there is still plenty of time to make your own personal

plans to participate and enjoy this historic and once in a lifetime event. >> now, the mayor did caution that you want to be in place if you're coming down by friday, tomorrow, around 6:00 p.m., because there is going to be an increasing group of road closures and other restrictions that will make travel obviously time consuming and a little bit difficult. by the way this press conference got underway about an hour late. that was for very good reason, everyone was watching the pope on big screen. we'll be seeing him in person very soon. for now live from center city, walt hunter, cbs-3, "eyewitness news" up. >> stand recall reason to be late, walt, thank you. as we get closer to the pope's arrival, first check on the forecast with kyla grogan out on the skydeck. everyone wants to know will it rain this weekend? >> can we just bottle this up for the weekend? that would be great. i have to tell you we will see wet their takes a turn to the cloudy and potentially rainy headed toward the weekend. let's look. your saturday forecast talking

low 70s being and cloudy skies, also, very breezy, sunday, also, low 70s, and as you can see, chance of a shower. now, let me show you what is going on here. basically, if we look at future weather, low pressure system to the south off the coast, see by the time woe get to friday night, it is starting to bring some showers and clouds, very close to us, and then as we get into saturday again cloudy skies, and those clouds relatively close. so the question is: will it stay far enough to the south that we can avoid some of the showers? you can see, it is going to be a very close call, as we get into friday, though, we expect the sun to turn to cloudy skies, and then a little bit breezy, and then of course sunday that's when our chance of showers would be. so, crossing my fingers, i think with everyone in philadelphia, that that will not happen. than we will have just cloudy skies, and maybe sprinkle or two sunday, but we have to be prepared for it, erika, of course we'll track this very closely headed toward the weekends, back by the way with the seven day forecast for this wonderful day, and the

next seven ahead in just a few moments. >> does look beautiful out there. pope francis on the cover of the upcoming issue of time magazine, shows him arriving at joint base andrews two days ago outside of washington, accompanying storely profile his historic trip to america. this is the third time pope francis has snagged a cover on the us edition of the magazine. he was named time's person of the year back in december of 2013. >> later this afternoon, the pontiff will head to new york sit. final security preparations are underway there. the pope will be in the big apple at the same time as 170 heads of state. they're gathering for the united nations general assembly. the nypd says it has more than 6,000 officers assigned to the pope and the un, not to mention other resources, too. count on "eyewitness news" for complete coverage of the papal visit. look for live reports from our david spunt, starting later today, he'll be up in new york with the pope. of course, we'll bring you live coverage of every event during the pope's stay in philadelphia, this weekend.

>> and, tune into cbs-3 tonight for our papal special. ukee washington and jest did a dean will be live on the ben franklin parkway as the city puts finishing touches on the papal visit preparations, and our pat ciarrocchi will explore the pope's history with those who know him well. that's tonight at 7:00 right here on cbs-3. >> the delaware department of justice is now looking into a deadly police involved shooting in wilmington. a man in a wheelchair, who police say was armed with a gun, was killed. eyewitness video obtained this video here, from a witness, who claimed the video captures the actual shooting. police say that they responded to report of a man with a possible self-inflicted gunshot wound. they say when they arrived, they found the man in the wheelchair armed with a gun. in this video, you can hear police repeatedly telling the man to put the gun down, and put his hands up. we will continue to follow this developing story. >> developing right now, philadelphia police are

investigating a deadly stabbing right in the shadows of the pennsylvania convention center, that's where thousands of people have been gathering to take part in the world meeting of families. "eyewitness news" reporter, rahel solomon at police headquarters with more on this developing story. rahel? >> reporter: well, erika, this afternoon police tell me the victim was a 47 year old father, simply on his way to work, when he was stabbed. take a look, this is video from the scene earlier t appears to show the victim's headphones, police say, he was stabbed once in the left side of his chest and transport today hahnemann hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 7:10 this morning. police have not released the victim's name. they say they're still in the process of trying to notify his family. at this point no one is in custody. but police say they are canvassing the area, surveillance pictures will help them identify a suspect. >> i have detectives out there now, i'm not going to endorse, there is a lot of surveillance video in the area, i'm sure, pretty positive, we will capture the suspect on video

within the last hour, pope francis taking to a balcony at the us capitol overlooking the national mall as he led thousands in prayer. the pope getting warm reception from those who gathered before he headed off to the parish of st. patrick, to meet with a group of homeless resident. meanwhile, hundreds of red cross volunteers will be stationed throughout philadelphia this weekend to help visitors during the papal visit. but, as "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo shows us, the organization says families can help themselves stay safe if they just take couple of simple stems before leaving for center city. >> reporter: home base for the red cross in philadelphia is

already hopping, activity here, will only get busier. about 600 volunteers will check in today at the 23rd and chestnut street location, and prepare to stay through the papal visit. some are driving from as far away as detroit to take part. >> we have volunteers that said i will get in a car and i will drive myself there, because it is important for the red cross to be responding. >> the red cross will have two main roles this weekend, medical assistance and family reunification, in fact, toll free help line when active overnight to assist visitors who had separated from their loved ones while navigating fill. >> i if you're lost, if you see suffering from a family, call the number, we'll have team there to help you. >> but the best bet, have plan before you step foot in center city. >> there be there 12 just in this box right here. >> that's red cross family reunification centers, red cross locations throughout philadelphia that you can set as a a family meeting point. despite effort to improve cell phone reliability, the red

tonight. so if you would like to get out tonight, no problem there. live look atkin town, neighborhood network, 73 degrees, beautiful blue skies here, wind, very calm out of the east northeast at about 5 miles per hour, current temperatures right now in philadelphia, 77 degrees, 76 allentown, about 72 down in wildwood. so starting to warm up today, as a matter of fact look a pat my -- palmyra, 79 degrees, mt. holly, doylestown, not far behind there at 77. now this is the wind. it is not too bad. you can see about 9 miles per hour, rolling through philadelphia, the shore, little bit more, and that is helping to unfortunately kick off the rip current today. so, just know that you're under high risk for rip current, at the shore today. storm scan3, shows the beautiful skies, just few clouds out, there absolutely lovely, our problem come when we look to the south. and we look off the carolina coastline, that's where we have low pressure system, you can kind of make out the counter clockwise circulation there. it is going to be traveling up the coast, and when it does, it is going to bring some cloudy weather, potentially even few showers, so mostly sunny today under the influence of high pressure,

you can see what happens, get into friday, that sun turns to clouds, temperatures in the 70s, so we start to cool down a bit. now we get into saturday. clouds, and the wind starts to kick up, as the low pressure system is tracking up the coste bit. it is coming very close to us, so that's why, on sunday, we do have chance of showers. now, the thing is it is not a huge chance of showers. but it is in there. so, saturday, i think, just prepare yourselves for relatively cool day, with some clouds, little bit of winds for the celebration of mals, at 10:30 a.m., 7:00 p.m., festival of families gets going, then on sunday the bishop's meeting at 9:30, should be cloudy affair, could see few sprinkles and showers make their way day in on sunday. models trending staying further to the south. i like that. that would mean that we could maybe get the clouds, but not the showers, that would help a lot. but right now as it stands, sun to clouds friday, cool and breezy saturday, and sunday we do have about a 30% chance after shower, but we don't have that today, do we? it is gorgeous out there. 81 degrees, sunshine,

beautiful, if you can get out and enjoy it, tonight 59 degrees, clear, and comfortable. lovely evening, taking a look at your seven day forecast, we aren't going to stay in the 80s much longer, folks, 76 degrees by friday, again the clouds rolling in in the afternoon, staying in the 70s we go through the weekends, and you can see, again, that cloudy kind of breezy weather forecast, going to be with us throughout this papal visit. weekend, although, you know, i am hoping the pope is putting his order in for some heavenly weather, and we do warm up as we head into next week. my next tuesday, another 08 degrees day, which starts to get little rarity point. so, we'll take it when we can get it.

and we still have no limits on carbon pollution tt# which can lead to more asthma attacks in children but senator toomey has voted repeatedly to let polluters keep releasing unlimited carbon pollution into the air. and took more than one million dollars from the polluters. tell senator toomey to vote for the clean power plan, because unlimited pollution shouldn't be a right. but playing outside should be.
