and this morning we're hoping that the pope got a little extra shut eye this morning after a jammed pack day full of event giving a historic speech at independent mall and finishing with the inspirational night at the festival of families. quite a night there in center city. workers has been busy converting last night's concert stage in today's alter for the papal mass on the parkway another event sure to be a momentous occasion. today is sunday, september 27th, good morning, to you thanks so much for being here. we are so glad you are here as part of the coverage this weekend. i'm nicole brewer. >> i'm erika von tiehl. you mentioned those workers still out here this morning setting everything up making sure it is perfect for when pope francis celebrates mass today at 4:00 p.m. owe has a busy schedule ahead of him before that even happens. he is waking up at saint

charles borromeo, right now, with the other fathers and he will head to philadelphia's largest prison. that will be happening later on today at 11:00 o'clock. he will meet with a select group of inmate, staff, victims of crimes of the curran-fromhold correctional facility in northeast philadelphia pope francis is known to visit the prisons since he has bee conn the pope and security as you might imagine will be exception hi tight for this event. want to touch back on the festival of families, nicole mentioned this. you did say he was the easily the biggest star last night for the big blow out celebration. he was in some very good company though. >> ♪ >> ♪ >> aretha franklin belting it out performing a stirring rendition of amazing race. queen of soul then wanted to sing that song in particular because she find it universal, loved and a appreciated by those of all faiths, in a

converting this great papal stage in the alter and preparations, good morning. >> reporter: erika, good morning. the the work on that stage continues right now, it has been going all night and finishing touches are falling into place for that mass this afternoon. lets take a closer look now, as of now, workers are taking stage smoothing out carpets, preparing alter and doing so much more in the audience, they are lighting up chairs in sharp straight line for perfect presentation. some 10,000 tickets have been handed out for a historic mass, all seats are expected to be taken. much different show from yesterday's festival of families concert. pope francis, watched famous names take the mike. he seemed thrilled by stories of families from around the world, each sharing how their family's faith, strength, brought them through personal challenges. the pope was serenaded by the queen, aretha franklin, whose rift on amazing grace had him clapping and smiling. andre bocelli and others

woeded crowd of thousands too. among them two sisters one who just met the pope when he stopped in washington and another who just wanted a glimpse of him, lets take a listen. >> so he just walk in the the back door of his chapel out of his car, into our chapel. we were all responding. he just started spontaneously going from sister to sister shaking one hand and to talk to us. >> i saw the pope going down this roadway right here. >> reporter: what did you think? >> it was worth it. i just loved him and i wanted to see a man with love in his eyes. i'm about to celebrate the my 60th anniversary of being a sister and i thought last pope i saw was pope john the 23rd when i was only 14 years old. >> reporter: she will than among the crowd at 4:00 when that mass begins this mass could draw a million people or more to the parkway, everyone

ago when people, 40,000 actually filled these chairs to welcome pope francis to this historic landmark. the it started with the holy father a's parade around independent mall where a traditional pope francis style we saw the the peoples pope stop to kiss and bless children before finally arriving here at independent hall a place that became a symbol of our country. hundreds of years ago when declaration of independence and the constitution were a adopted and yesterday marked another chapter in the history books for independent mall. upon arriving the pontiff was presented with a 5-foot cross from the the hispanic community. it was fitting that the pope francis then addressed the crowd of dignitaries and ticketed faithful in spanish. speaking about immigration equality, and religious freedom. using the same lectern abraham lincoln used forget isberg addressee reminded people of all face to continue fighting for ideals establish here many

right now is win will kick up again today. we have high and low pressure. sunday night for future weather. clockwise circulation around the high pressure, counterclockwise around low pressure. they squeeze together to get wind going. by 4:00 p.m. monday we have got some showers rolling in here and as we start to get into our tuesday windy conditions and looking out the for more widespread showers. not that we don't have rain yet the but we are getting a a reprieve and that is fantastic. current temperatures in philadelphia 60 degrees. we will see 54 in reading. sixty-one down in atlantic city. let's head down the shore and talk about that today because we have trouble brewing down there. sixty-seven in ocean city. sixty-six in stone harbor. lets talk about the win. we will see it pick up today. you can see where we are less than 10 miles an hour except for dover. but that wind will start to pile water up on the shore so it drives it in. we have a coastal flood advisory for areas in green and we could see minor flooding. just a heads up those living down there know you need to be on, alert for something like

this and we are looking at gusty wind up to 25 miles an hour, rough surf and minor coast aal flooding. with you today we are catching a break. seventy-five is our high. breezy, cloudy, we could see a few sprinkles out there. that northeast wind will be a problem today so just make sure you you are ready. mostly cloudy tonight, cool and a low of 60 degrees. that wind will relent a little bit tonight and giving us a break. seven day forecast shows a wild roller coaster ride of temperatures. by monday we are up to 79 degrees. tuesday 80. and then by friday we are seeing a high of 68. get your jack he it back out, meisha. it will be one of those do i bring the jacket? do i not the bring the jacket. you know, i'm starting to wear longer sleeves, as an indication it is getting cold for my minnesota bones. ben franklin bridge, it is closed, no vehicles, pedestrian can cross, and this will open tomorrow, at noon time. that is the good news. for those just ancy to get over that bridge again that will be opened, kind of a

charismatic. >> ever think you would see a pope here in philadelphia. >> reporter: on october 3rd, 1979, the french family never expect such an encounter. they lived near the the cardinals resident very close to the seminary where pope francis will stay on this visit. herb is now 88, wondered would they see john paul. >> my wife, daughter and i, went out, and stood on the sidewalk the at the curb, waiting for him, to come by. there was a helicopter, and then there were motorcycles, and vehicles that obviously came from the city, police force and then the pope came riding by. >> first he stood up, and he was so handsome. >> as he rode by our house he turned to us and he blessed us. >> we looked at each other and we could not believe this, here was a nice jewish family and we were just blessed by the pope. he was such a presence, so close we could have touched

and, good morning to you so glad you are with us on this sunday morning i'm nicole brewer. >> i'm quarter von tiehl. we are broadcasting live from the ben franklin parkway where just last night thousands of people gathered for festival of the families. as soon as the crowd moved out, all of these workers moved in. they are converting the papal stage to an alter for mass later today at 4:00 p.m. celebrated by pope francis. he has a jammed packed schedule let me tell you before he takes off for rome later on tonight. 9:15 this morning pope francis meets with seminarians and bishops at saint charles seminary. at 11:00 he will visit curran-fromhold correctional facility. at 4:00 p.m. with what so many catholics have have been looking forward to pope francis celebrating mass right behind me at ben franklin parkway. then at 8:00 p.m. he wraps up this whirlwind tour of the

u.s. and then heads back to rome. the alter is just about set. these workers can take a break on the ben franklin parkway. crews have been working throughout the night to get this all set and perfect for mass later today. let's check with "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff where i know some people were sleeping out trying to get a good view of the pope later on today, good morning. >> reporter: including that alter work i don't know if there is a whole lot of sleep, that could be had with the commotion at this hour. there was some construction but look at this, sleeping bags, up and down these railings here way more than yesterday. i think people realize they really did want to get in on this and see pope francis front and center, for themselves. the last night there was such an overwhelming feeling of emotion, there was so much energy that was going on last night. i feel like that has transitioned to this calm, this calm, contemplation, might call it. just yesterday everybody

reflecting on so many, from the independent mall all the way backup here to the parkway to the music, performances and the finally with fire works and that was an overwhelming event. to be able to have that energy to come out today and it was really big but that stage that you have seen over and over again in that footage now transformed into a papal, it will be, you know, front and center area for this worship service, this mass at 4:00 a.m. this morning. that is what everyone is here for. that is setting the stage for today. that stage from last night is now an alter. that is presiding over hundreds of thousands here on the parkway later this have afternoon. once again, as we talk about people that come in with the intention of worshiping licensing side pope francis we have 13 year-old a alycia here. her family just got here. i thought maybe you slept here because you got here so early. tell me what you guys have just done. >> we have come from boston and traveled for seven hours to get here. we got here the at 4:00 a.m.

4:00 a.m. that means he has been up at for hours at saint charles seminar any wynnewood. walt hunter is at the 54th and city avenue, good morning, walt. >> reporter: good morning. the the pope is an early reiser. early risers here, especially joggers on city avenue hoping they might get a glance of the pope. take a look behind me quite a police presence. you can see national guard members back there. city avenue as told in the traffic reports sealed off to traffic here just about half an hour ago. this is route to saint charles seminary about a mile down the roadway there is the seminary off to the side. if today holds true with yesterday, a lot of folks should be gathering along here hoping perhaps at some point to see the pope. he will be coming and going from the seminary heading up to the prison and back to the seminary. then a final trip from the seminary down in the parkway area, and a lot of folks along city avenue here obviously hoping they may get the a glimpse.

curran-fromhold correctional facility in holmesberg. don champion is outside on the cbs-3 sky deck and has more on the pope's visit to the cities largest prison, don, good morning. >> reporter: yes, good morning, erika. prison ministry has been one of the pope francis priorities and i spoke to several inmates over at curran-fromhold who will be in the room today. they say they were just as shock as anyone that the pope wanted to come visit them. many visitors have passed through the the doors of the cure curran-fromhold correctional facility but no one like him. >> this had to be last thing you thought that would happen in here. >> definitely was. it is a opportunity. >> reporter: brandon hardtrophies one of 200 people who have been chosen, to meet with pope francis when he arrives. hardgrove has been here for 16 months awaiting trial, and says that while he is not catholic, faith has gotten him through it. >> just not giving up. i under the circumstances that i'm in jail, you know, just

keeping faith, and keeping hope alive. >> reporter: hardgrove, other inmates, helped build this chair that the pope will sit on during his visit. edward gillcrisis another inmate who will meet the pope. >> it picks me up. it lets me know that people, people didn't just, you know, clean their hands of you, and people still think about you. >> reporter: the inmates were chosen for, among other reasons, their good behavior, the pope's visit here will highlight his focus on social justice. earlier this year francis washed the feet of several prisoners in rome. >> people that make mistakes can, you know, they can bounce back and become part of a society again. >> reporter: it will be a meet ago this will change lives. outside from about 100 inmates will be in the room today we're told several dozen,
